he was self-taught as a musician-- he played 27 instruments
he had an amazing sense of humor
the highest of professionals at all times, and one of the most charismatic.
I saw him in concert in Seattle in 1984
***and to answer your question, his style was Prince.
there was no one else that was like him.
he also wrote and produced all of his own music.

I never realized what a talented guitar player prince was until I saw his performance at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He participated in a rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and other great artists. Prince stole the show. The entire second half is all about his guitar mastery. I highly recommend checking this out. Prince was also quit a philanthropist. While he was alive he quietly donated a large portion of his vast wealth, mostly to causes for disadvantaged children. He was very careful to avoid recognition for this.

    - He did all genres you said and more: gospel, rock, hip-hop- dance, funk, classical, jazz, pop, psychedelia...
    - he played many instruments being a master with guitar, piano, bass and drums
    - he recorded several albums he alone in the studio
    - his vocal range was top5 and he could sing real low to real high, falsetto, scales, etc
    - amazing songwriter and lyricist
    - he had some bands, basically for live shows: The Revolution, The New Power Generation, The Third Eye Girl
    - he wrote dozens of songs for other artists and someof them did covers: Sinead O'Connor, Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker, Kenny Rodgers, The Bangles, Sheena Easton, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Nina Simone
    - HE INFLUENCED MILES DAVIS! Miles only had good words when talked about Prince
If you wanna go deeper try live shows:
Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame: While my Guitar Gently Weeps (the envy of any guitar player, a solo totally improvised)
    Superbowl Halftime show
    Brit Awards
LA Forum (the mash-up with Play That Funky Music with an out of the charts guitar solo and then he take the bass)

Perhaps from a concrete standpoint, Prince was the consummate frontman vocalist/presenter for the wide catalog he wrote and produced. And a heck of a top prog bluesish hard rock style lead guitarist. Then, there's the Prince regarding all the other standpoints. An impassioned artist/performer.

I love when someone new starts learning about Prince. He was a genius. This band is The Revolution - Wendy Melvoin (guitar), Lisa Coleman (keys), Dr Fink (keys) Brown Mark (bass), Bobby Z (drums). His bands were always made up of great musicians of different genders and ethnicities. You did well interpreting the song. Purple Rain represents the apocalypse. When blood mixed with the blue sky, it turns purple. He references a purple sky in another song, 1999. He was his own genre. Could play any style of music. He wrote, produced, played all instruments, and sang all vocals on many of his songs. I recommend checking out live performances because they are a whole other level. Here’s a good list to get you started (he has soooo many amazing songs and performances)… live version if Purple Rain (I love the one from the Syracuse show of the Purple Rain tour or the 1985 American Music Awards), anything from the Glam Slam show (my favorites are Nothing Compares 2 U or Thieves in the Temple/It), If I Was Your Girlfriend (from Sign O the Times movie), Shhh (from Detroit show of Musicology tour), Motherless Child, America, Play that Funky Music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage, Piano Medley (from Lovesexy tour), and Love Bizarre (from the Parade tour). I could go on and on, but that’s already so many options for you. Sorry to have rambled on, but there is just so much to say about the best musician ever 💜💜💜

Prince had an unusual skills set and a penchant for writing and playing songs that were often a hybrid of musical styles. He blended genres rather seamlessly when he wanted to, which was often, and that helped him to craft a wide-ranging and unique sound for himself throughout his 38 years in the music business.
You have good ears! "Purple Rain" is probably best categorized as a rock anthem that incorporates Black gospel and some would even say the song has a country flavor to it. Prince was always against him or his music being lumped into any one genre or style so blending genres gave him a larger palette of sounds to work in and was possibly also a way for him to buck trends and subvert expectations placed upon him as a pop artist. He was actually a surprisingly unconventional and avant grade musical artist who was always adding something new and different to the pop music game. He was truly one of a kind. I encourage you to explore more of his work.

The best way to explain it to you is that Prince was like the "Ren" of his time, but a mainstream artist. He could do so many genres, wrote beautiful, well known songs for othe artists. He had so much feel and energy and was one of the true greats. This was an end scene of his cult classic movie, Purple Rain.
By the way, people are speaking very highly of you in the Ren FB groups. Calling you an Old Soul, like I did a few months ago.

Hi there, buddy! I've been listening to Prince since 1980, when I was 14. I'm going on 58 now (you do the math 😉). I now have all of his albums, CDs, and I've seen the movie a few times, including when it first came out in theaters. Prince wrote whatever genre he felt like writing at any given time. The only genre he never seemed to touch was country, however there are a few songs that are a tiny bit country tinged. I believe he played something like 27 instruments, and I know he was self-taught in almost all of them. You can check that out if you'd like. For his debut album, he wrote all the songs, played all of the instruments, arranged and produced it. Out of all of my years of listening, this is my favorite song. Definitely gospel! It's called The Ladder, and it's off his Around The World In A Day album.

Cool reaction. U gotta watch the Purple Rain movie which puts the song in a better context. He played every genre, often times mixing genres. They called it Minnesota Funk. Minnesota was one of the whitest towns in America, no black radio. So blacks came from Mississippi to Minnesota, and u had black kids who played instruments, but all they heard was rock music, so they added a funk element to what they heard. That's where prince got his sound from. Most times he played instruments out of tune to get a different sound. Multi cultural band because he was going for a sly and the family stone look. 1980 he toured w Rick James, it was supposed to be mentor/protege, and prince blew Rick out every night, got kicked off the tour. Rick was so petty, he stole one of prince s keyboards, used it on a song, then erased everything prince had programmed in it and sent it back. 1981 prince opened for the rolling stones, crowd booed prince off the stage, even threw bottles at him. 1982 he and michael Jackson broke the color barrier on mtv as they were the first to be played in heavy rotation.A year before purple rain, he did a triple threat tour 1982/83 it was prince, vanity 6 and the time. For all three groups, he wrote all the songs, told them what notes to play. It ended up being battle of the bands which was the real story behind purple rain movie. Before the tour started, he was already tired of purple rain.
Genres of prince u can check out:
Funk "soft and wet" or "we can work it out" 1978
"Cloreen bacon skin" has prince on bass, Morris day on the drums
RnB "i feel for you" 1979
    "Cool/don't stop til" 2013
    Rap "chapters and verse"
Blues "the ride" 1998 lotta guitar
Prince dancing "house quake" live 1987 or 1988 (Germany)
Jazz "old friends for sale" 2013
    Guitar songs
    "Head" 1981 Houston
"Feline" rehearsal from 1984/85 lasts 33min
    "Temptation" 1986
    "Computer blue" album version
Also "computer blue" from St Louis studio. That's mostly instrumental.
"Ronnie talk to Russia" lotta guitar
Sometimes one song would change into two or three different songs, one example is "kiss" extended version.
When u liste to "when doves cry" he took the bass out the song so u could feel like something was missing, plus the record company wanted him to be a RnB artist, so he played different music so he wouldn't be categorized
First two albums, "for you" and "prince" had him playing every instrument, singing every part.

Don't look too deep into the meaning of the words.
Understand that Prince, who was born Prince Rogers Nelson was known as 'The Purple One', for purple being his favorite color. His concerts were filled with women in purple and when he died Buckingham Palace and London and the empire State building in New York City were both lit up in purple.
He was arguably the best guitarist in the world and he was his own genre. He had/has thousands of songs.
You could easily spend the next 20 years discover in France and it's much easier than it was when he was alive, because when he was alive, none of his performances, none of his music were allowed to be on RUclips or any other platform.

There wasn’t a genre Prince couldn’t do. He mixed genres. Prince himself was a genre. Prince was & is music. And Prince had 3 official groups, The Revolution (the one you see here with Purple Rain), New Power Generation & 3rdEyeGirl and they all helped take Prince’s music to higher heights during his career.
And if you do review “When Doves Cry” please do NOT review the Official Music Video. Review the EXTENDED Music Video, it’s the ENTIRE song and it’s pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This was a great video & review!

    Son,
Since this reaction is from two months ago, perhaps now you realuze what you’ve stumbled into…😜
PRINCE is a man and an experience! You can’t get to know what he’s about by reading comments to your reaction videos… Some of this you’re gonna have to do on your own if you really wanna understand the PRINCE phenomenon.
Purple rain is princes most well-known song, but it’s far from his best work.
As a beginner, I would suggest that you watch the movie Purple Rain, which this song is taken from.
If you enjoy what you see and you have any questions prints related feel free to hit me up.
    Peace and be wild!
Loyal PRINCE fanatic of over 50 years!

Everyone posted such beautiful, spot on info about Prince. 💜 Something interesting about this clip from the movie...the audio is LIVE from their performance in Minneapolis! You'll have to watch the movie...this scene was right after his father had attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head. That's why it gave you goosebumps, it will bring you to tears in the movie. Prince was an incredibly spiritual guy but You'll want to dive into this huge rabbit hole from the very beginning of his life. Way too much to explain 💜

"When Doves Cry" is great, but there are lots of great songs to choose from. "Let's Go Crazy", "Little Red Corvette","1999", his covers of "Motherless Child" or "Creep" are all good choices for your next Prince reaction.

    🤫 0)-+> 😐
I was born in 1973... became a Prince fan in 1980.
I'm not gonna brag and say things like, I own:
All the Vinyls since 1978, all the vinyl 12" Maxi singles, the cassette tapes and cassette singles, the Books I have, the VHS movies, the DVD movies/ concert films/ specials, the full library in digitized form.
That would be downright silly. (I'm working on the 40,000+ unreleased tunes).
    😊
Have fun with your exploration and...
