Robin's son, Robin John Gibb, said "When he passed away we went out, they took the equipment away and we came back in, I picked up my phone and found "I Started a Joke" on RUclips and played it. I put the phone on his chest and that was the first time I broke down. I knew that song and its lyrics were perfect for that moment. That song will always have new meaning to me now."

No, it's not the most popular and in fact, not as well known but it gave Robin one of his first chances to show off his wonderfully beautiful and unique vibrato voice. The song is sad and poignant but still delivers the message in a heartfelt way. After all these years, I still tear up listening to it. Okay, I've been waiting for you all to realize this. Robin makes the BeeGees what it is. You cannot have the BeeGees sound without Robin at all. The timber and purity of his voice is crazy. He was always overshadowed by Barry, which is why Robin and Barry struggled a lot in their relationship. I think Robin had resentment. I grew up listening to the BeeGees and I will tell you that they were played in my house from the very beginning and through the disco phase. My parents loved them throughout. My mom is 78 and she still listens to the BeeGees all the time. It makes her feel better when she's down. Do not sleep on Robin.

There is only one song in which he sings the lead part in falsetto, "Living together" and there is a RUclips video with his voice isolated. This sounds really unpleasant and you can hear the difference to Barry's falsetto extremely clearly (from which his falsetto is also available "isolated")!!! Oh, and Barry said once in an interview that Robin often has changed his voice and Barry couldn`t understand WHY, maybe thats the reason I very often don`t like it and sometimes (for whom the bell ..., bodyguard, kiss of life...) When the Bee Gees went "disco" (it was actually R&B-based), they lost many fans, but gained millions of new ones, and eventually, all of the fans were able to reconcile the two phases as part of a whole incredible body of work. One of the reasons the group broke up temporarily in the late 60s is because Robin decided he could be a star without his brothers, and he did have a substantial solo career, but eventually came back to the group and they made history together.

The Bee Gees had a whole career in the 60s folk genre. By the time disco came around, they were basically forgotten by a lot of people. Disco was actually their second surge of success. A lot of their early fans weren't into disco and a lot of disco fans weren't into folk, so there wasnt a lot of crossover in that respect.

Personally I rode with the Bee Gees through their complete career. I never considered what they did in the disco era as disco music because that album/movie is what made disco so popular. The Bee Gees were just the Bee Gees to me. Earlier Bee Gees hits featured Robin more. Whoever wrote the song sang the lead on it. Their last album "This Is Just Where I Came In" sort of throws back to earlier Bee Gees. Check it out.

Spend an hour with Bee Gees 1st. It's perhaps the 2nd or 3rd album I purchased as a young lad at 14 years of age and now as a 70 + year old person, it's never been forgotten or removed from my list of monthly plays. The transition from this style to the disco world was necessary for them to make a living and the rest is history. Personally, the progression from their beginning to that time period was amazing and I am not confidant a new listener could ever duplicate that experience, but this group is always a delight, no matter what age group you are part. Thank you for the video.

Thank you for reviewing this song! This just makes me cry every time. With Robin's incredible voce, and the lyrics to me mean what it feels like when no one understands you, when everyone feels the opposite of you. Powerful stuff.
I'm not quite old enough to have witnessed firsthand their transition to disco, but I've listened to all their albums and am fascinated to see how it played out. Their album "Mr. Natural" was their last pre-disco album, in like '74, and it didn't have any hits, but it's really good and has a lot of hints of things to come. You'll probably never review any of those songs, but "Down the Road" is a real gem!

Finally! Thank you. I've (along with many others) requested this and many other Bee Gees Robin-lead songs long ago. He was the front man before Barry was, for good reason. Also want to mention that in the disco era, their music was actually R&B (rhythm and blues) but you could dance to it... their music was simply played at discotheques. This song and others from the 1960s was more psychedelic.

As you marvel at robins voice, dont forget, 1968. Robin and maurice were 18 until december 22 of that year. 18. Lonely days was the first bg song I fell in love with. I was 5 years old so I didn't know about who sang what songs. I just loved it. Then run to me came out and I fell in love with that one, too.then nights on Broadway and fanny be tender, and I didn't know they were the same group. I thought jive talking was earth wind fire or something. I made a mixed tape of my fave songs off the radio and I had several bg songs on it. My brother heard me playing it and poked his head in my door and said wow you really like the bee gees don't you. That was when I first realized all these songs I loved were by the same group. When sat night fev came out, I loved it all even more. Lonely days mesmerized me and they've had that affect on me ever since, no matter what period, style or genre.
