Parkland judge slams lawyers for 'unprofessional' and 'unacceptable' behavior in courtroom

- Parkland trial Judge Elizabeth Scherer, upon return from the lunch break, ripped into Nikolas Cruz's attorneys and the prosecution lawyers for what she called "rude" and "disrespectful" behavior from the lawyers while court proceedings are ongoing. The judge admonished both sides to cut out what they are doing and have respect for the courtroom.

She sounds like she’s talking to a bunch of grade schoolers. Pretty sad she has to do this. Good for her for doing that.
you're right. Her speech takes me back in time when I was in elementary and when students needed discipline
I agree with you 1000%
Exactly my thought. I teach middle school. I have a similar lecture apparently scheduled for every Monday because the kids forget how to be civilised over the weekend.
She’s the judge it’s her job to keep structure. Order in the court! Should be common sense.
she luks like a grade school teacher may be why the lawyers dont feel like someone is in charge….
The fact that she has to talk to them like they’re children. Absolutely ridiculous. This judge is a badass
She's a damn good judge!! I'm proud of that fact she put them in place and let them know whose in charge way to go Elizabeth 🎉
This Judge is VERY RUDE-How did she become a Judge? These are Lawyers with Kids and Familes not a bunch of kids in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
@@goldenboyi1989 dude it's a courtroom... the fact that they have kids and families and can't be civil and respectable knowing full well how strict their environment they're in is is what is rude
@@middle11 But it's kind of fun to play in a courtroom, but maybe not in this trial
@@goldenboyi1989 no...the defense wasted so many people's time, not calling half their witnesses, then the prosecution side was NOT ready after they just decided to rest their case. It's unprofessional and stupid. On top of that, the defense was being rude to the judge. They deserve being called out. The lawyers KNOW how to conduct themselves-they know better.
You know you've taken things too far when the judge no longer allows you to get up without permission. In all videos showing court cases, lawyers get up and move around freely but they're still professional, clearly these lawyers weren't so she has to lecture them and treat them like kindergarten children.
Ha. You’re so right. I’m a court reporter and I smile inwardly any time a judge has to reprimand attorneys like children. It’s so pathetic but it’s fun to witness.
Edit - And I have had a few judges who have shut attorneys up and not allowed them to speak or approach. That, or my ever favorite “I ask the questions. You are to answer yes or no and only when asked. Nothing more.”
@@kyndkristen Yep sounds like an elementary classroom at times. I would smile inwardly too since some attorneys deserve it.
It actually depends on the Judge…some Judges allow the attorneys to stay seated when conducting witness questioning, some require attorneys to stand up …some judges allow attorneys to walk around between the attorneys’ tables and the Judge’s Dias while others require them to ask permission but all Judges require that attorneys ask to approach the witness or to approach the Bench and that’s because the courtroom deputies need to be paying attention to that interaction in case violence erupts.
I absolutely love her. She's right this is a case that needs to be handled much more professionally. They need to be more respectful to the courtroom and the families of the victims. Sad she has to tell these lawyers how to act.
It’s sad that professional lawyers have to be reprimanded by the judge is a shame
The professional part is the missing piece. Elite attorneys would know better.
They need to take all but one person from the defense team and have them in court, while the rest of the defense mob is sent back to the office to do their work. Defense needs to be ONE person to lead.
I mean, thats why they have a judge. They dont decide the verdict, they just make sure procedures are followed.
The world needs to learn that “Respect Matters”.
She's having to reprimand them like they're in school.
Good for her, I’m so glad she is scolding them.
Its what i hate about american courts. They are more interested in procedure, and how the courts look than they are the actual truth. Its why so much corruption is in the judicial system because it is a playground for the judges and lawyers. Ive always wondered just who the preceedings are for actually because it looks to me that justice is the last thing on all their minds
Sad, she gotta talk to grown man-babies like that! She's not gonna let them goofys turn her court into a circus...great job judge!!

This truly is sad. The fact the judge has to tell grown adults who are lawyers how to behave in a court room is just unbelievable. Professionalisms needs to be taught in schools because obviously people aren’t learning this at home.

No, it is not ridiculous at all. You seem ignorant about Court procedure.
Lawyers are trained to be professional and respectful in Court - If they fail to do so and display "grade school" behavior, the Judge is obliged to address that - In this case the Judge handled it very firmly and professionally.

She doesn't even sound like she is yelling at them. She looks and sounds like she has her emotions in check and the disrespect she gets for being a respectful judge is just bad. I wonder if it's because she is pretty that those lawyers do this
she’s not holding authority. people don’t listen to men or women who speak quickly with a high strident voice. she needs to lower her voice and speak slowly and clearly about what she expects and what the consequences will be if it doesn’t happen. when someone speaks like that it creates a situation where people don’t respect their position not even by choice but just by instinct.

Imagine at this stage, with all these lawyers and professionals who've been highly educated with hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition, need to be disciplined like school children. Way to go, Judge!
I like her. She’s no nonsense, competent. And for the people saying she has a “bad attitude” I wouldn’t expect it to be too pleasant considering the type of trial that it is. I feel like because she’s female that she’s being judged more harshly than if she were male. I have yet to go in front of a judge that’s been all fuzzy, nice and welcoming.
That's definitely true. If it was a man using that tone no one would have an issue with it
I agree most people in that profession are very thick skinned and have the same type of attitudes as this judge maybe even more strict and harsh. Law ain’t for the weak or the meek!
It's absolutely because she's female, and the fact that she's young and beautiful only adds to the disrespect she has received.
There is a way to be inviting and stern at the same time it's a a balancing act that only Judges can do. That's why there Judges. You can't emotionally distraught and have outburst. Gotta keep it keel and keep it moving. She's right this trial is a mess. She let it get to this point. So she needs to take accountability
@@Grace4_AllHPC You are only referring to her as "emotional" because she's a woman. Woman don't run around mass murdering people. That's "emotional". Having to ask, repeatedly, for order and respect in her own courtroom is not.
The fact that at the end of the video, the judge asks one of the defense lawyers a valid question and she gets answered ‘sure’ instead of ‘yes your honor’ means that they did not get the message. This needs to be over already, in my opinion if you deliberately kill more than 2 people or 1 child, the death penalty should be given without. You kill 17 people you have given up all your rights.
If they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt or confess them all should get the DP. Like if they are on film doing it then that’s it. No chance of getting the wrong person. Get it over with.
Yeah, the Supreme Court abandoned that approach long ago. The penalty phase is a constitutionally required element of a capital case.
