  • Nikolas Cruz was of sound mind and knew exactly what he was doing when he gunned down 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, a state psychiatrist testified during Cruz's sentencing. Dr. Charles Scott told the jury about the numerous pieces of evidence showing Cruz was calculated, premeditated and of sound mind when he planned and committed the mass murder.

I haven’t watched yet but I don’t think it’s just ‘pride’ at his actions. I don’t think he feels that much at the murders. Maybe an initial thrill. But then nothing. Living in a cage, being told what to do and when to do it for the rest of his life, wondering if he will be attacked by other inmates and never having freedom again is a worse punishment.

I also wanted him dead. But in the end, giving him a lethal injection (peaceful death) would NOT accomplish the following:
      1.- Bringing the victims back.
2.- Erasing the mental wounds of the survivors.
3.- Deterring or preventing more monsters like him from doing the same. Since they are psychopaths, they could care less. There are mass killers out there, waiting in line to get their massacre day. Just hasn't happened yet. But it will happen and will continue to happen. Psychopaths are detached. No fear of death.
If he spends life in prison this will happen:
1.- The families of the victims will know that he will be in a cage every day of his life until he dies. So is a LONG death sentence anyway.
2.- Big chance that he will be killed by another psychopath like himself. And that means, stabbed, strangled, or punched to death. I would say more suiting for him than lethal injection.
3.- As he mentally deteriorates, his body will start to fail too. He will probably acquire a disease and die from it.
So the death penalty is a form of revenge and provides immediate relief for the need to kill the killer of your children. An "eye for an eye". And I will agree with a death penalty conviction if it was done in the following ways:
      1) IMMEDIATELY. The morning after the sentencing.
      2) Parents and family members WILL participate (indirectly)on the execution if willing to do so. (I know many fathers will).
      3) Shooting squad. No eye cover. Parents can call the order to fire all at once. FIRE!!! Just like he shot them, he will get shot.
      4) Progressive shooting. Not all at once. Start with the legs, then abdomen ,chest and then, the "coup de grace" to the head.
      Now that is just.

These teens had many behavior problems. They used drugs. They were very disruptive and some ended up in Prison not being able to function in society. So the culprit is drugs and Alcohol. And we glamorize Alchohol because it’s suppose to be attractive and many wealthy people use just as well as poor people who abuse illegal drugs. It’s all bad for functional people in society and those who become dysfunctional. I hate Alcohol & Drugs. No matter how society makes one look evil and the other a Multibillion dollar business that’s legal. It’s all poisonous to behavior and life. People are victims the ones who break the law. TL:DR. He shouldn’t have been allowed in the courtroom getting to see the families reactions and relive his fantasies with them present.
When my wife was diagnosed with cancer we were told it was terminal but went for a second opinion. The second doctor confirmed it was terminal and began to show us the MRI. At that point my wife and I agreed we didn’t need to see the images.
I knew after she was gone I’d have those MRI images in my mind forever. It would serve no useful purpose. What’s done was done and no need to add graphic images to my grief.
Similarly, I don’t know if hearing this serves any useful purpose to the family. Hearing all those gory details, the horror their kids went through and reliving that terrible day over and over forever in their minds.
But each person grieves differently and some may need it for closure.
But I personally wouldn’t want to see or hear any of it, especially with NC present. For one thing I’ll bet he was totally getting off on reliving it, this time with the family present to horrify. I’d bet anything he went back to his cell that night and had the best (let’s just say arousal moment) he’s ever had or ever will.
That alone would make it a hard pass for me. If the family still wanted to see and hear his “manifesto” they should have at least removed him from the courtroom to deny him any pleasure from seeing their reactions first hand.
What? Did they think he was going to have some moment of clarity and break down sobbing asking for forgiveness? He’s a psychopath and they have no remorse…ever.
From that moment on he’ll get to relive his fantasies and that final moment of glory in the courtroom over and over during those lonely nights in his cell.
F him. I hope he has a long, dark, lonely life. At least the family has the pleasure of knowing years from now when he’s old and gray and he can barely remember his moment of glory he’ll still be living in a concrete box with no one to talk to and someone opening a little hatch to slide a crummy meal in his cell. I think that’s worse than the DP.

It was similar to the actions of the Columbine shooters; they also "spared" a student in the beginning of their crime. It's indicative of his perception of control over the situation. This was very intentional and was thought out. He was not psychotic at time of the murders. Him reporting demons told him to do it are completely false. Hallucinations don’t work like that and he would have been very disorganized, responding to stimuli and not able to articulate what he is saying. Individuals with severe mental illness have more of a chance of getting assaulted vs them being violent.

I wonder if anyone questioned Cruz as to why he warned the first student he came in contact with to leave when his purpose was to kill students. Did he want to see fear and see him run? Did Cruz see him as a threat and want to try to get rid of him so his plans wouldn't be interrupted? Was it too personal for Cruz because the boy was so close to him in the stairway? Did Cruz know this boy before getting expelled? He knew the boy might go tell someone but maybe that was going to happen anyway if Cruz didn't assemble his rifle in time to shoot him. I'd love to know the psychology behind this.

I don't think we should have the death penalty. Many people don't think we should have the death penalty.
I can see the logic of your question, though. If the death penalty is a possibility, then life without parole seems like an insult to the victims. If the death penalty is not a possibility, then life without parole is the maximum penalty, and people feel that justice has been satisfied, because it's no longer "second worst".

But mostly your training kicks in and I think that is where the school resource officer failed. Also the FBI was informed of Nicholas Cruz as a threat. So many things went wrong here and I can’t imagine what the family’s are going through to know about all these warning signs and safety precautions failed.

@E Boston, it appears that you read only the first few words that define a law enforcement officer's duties they swore to uphold. It does say "to support the Constitution of the US", then continues to include "their state and the laws of their agency's jurisdiction." It gives as the core duty of the police service "to protect the public by detecting and preventing crime and the police have both common law and legislative powers to execute it. They are responsible for maintaining public order and safety, enforcing the law, and preventing, detecting, and investigating criminal activities." So, either you chose certain words out of context to support your claim, or you need to brush up on your reading comprehension. Have a nice day/night.

The most frustrating thing about this has been the defense's efforts to create a false narrative of his motivation and feelings. Can't bring up his love of swastikas, might give the jury a false impression of racism; despite his hateful opinions expressed on social media. Can't mention how he didn't express remorse outside the courtroom, don't want the jury to think he is a monster. Even if he acted like one.
