The Ultimate Best Door Painting System Spraying Hacks

- This is a simple method to spray paint doors. It works well for work sites with limited space since you don't have to stand the doors up in the middle of the room or lay them down horizontally to spray them. You can stack many doors against a wall, while the doors' paint is still wet.
If you use this method, please show appreciation by subscribing, liking, and sharing this video. If you use this method in another video please give credit to XC Painter for sharing his techniques. This is a rare technique and I'm sharing it to possibly thousands of people without any benefit to myself. Please help my channel grow at least. Thank you.
In a 10' by 10' bedroom you can spray at least 30 doors if you want to.
Note that having the space to prep them is slightly different, although you could prep them, and move through the stack of doors.
As always, wear your PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as a respirator with good prefilters and organic vapor cartridges. Safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, work shoes, hat, or hard hat are other forms of PPE that may be needed in some situations. Хобби
It's the least space consuming and easiest and tooless method I have seen. Good job!
I was watching this on my tv and had too look this up on my phone just to say this… your a BEAST…. Thank you for posting this!! So much masking and space saved already. I had horrible spraying experience today. This cheered me up lol. Spraying Emerald SW is no joke. Less paint. More coats. Do not treat it like normal paint. Or you will regret it. One drip you will be sanding for days or a lot of scraping and it drags A LOT. Besides that it looks great just passing this info on to the next fine eyed painter.
I would of never thought of that. Nice job.
DUDE, You just made my day , THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!
I dig it. Doors can easily take up a huge amount of space.
Nice! I just found my door spraying system!!! Thanks!
Jeff Bryant Thanks! We have improved slightly how we are doing this... we put blocks flat on top instead of on edge. It's more solid.
Very good idea, thanks. Liking your videos.
amazing. thank you. I am about to spray 22 doors in my garage and needed a simple method. Bravo!!
Cool, thanks
I've improved little aspects of this system to work better since this video was filmed. I now lay the blocks flat on top instead of on edge(way better)
I put a nail or screw in upper hinge mortise as well to carry the hinge side, also.
Awesome
Very innovative! Way to think outside the box! I'm gonna barrow this one from ya. Lol
Johnny White-Pants you can cut the 2x4's longer like 5" if you want a little more space off the wall.
I've done it that way a few times but prefer to use the L brackets and stand them all up accordion Style.
Simple as that👍
Yes this system rocks! Now we put our blocks flat on top (instead of on edge) and put a nail or screw in the top hinge mortise to lift door by, and it works excellent.
@@XCPainter Brilliant saved me a couple of hundy (NZ dollars LOL). I was going to buy stackers which screw onto the top and bottom of each door and then after spraying the door gets laid flat/stacked on top of the previous door. I would also have sticks on the floor with your method to prevent the bottom of the door sticking to the drop sheet. Is that ever a problem for you? Also what size tip 410 ? FFLP or standard? cheers from NZ
@@mcr9b6 yep sticks on floor or blocks on bottom of doors is a good idea. Most times I use something there. I like 410 the best for doors... it can be graco fflp (recommended 1000-1400 psi) or titan sc6+ (purple 1800-2000 psi)
Hey Mr. XC Painter your a Genius! Two thumbs up.
HR Painting Thanks you very much. I hope everyone enjoys the idea please help support the xc painter channel by sharing videos with friends or clients, and help other people subscribe to learn. Or at least see what goes into professional painting.
I use a zip wall pole in the middle of a room. Lean it against the pole ..spray and spread doors out through out the room. Way less set up time
Great idea! You get tons of clogs.. should check your filters. I rarely get any. That’s nuts, you had a few doors where you cleared clogs twice. Crazy
donaldjthomson You're right. I had more than usual, and usually I have zero or next to none. Its less than ideal but I was spraying late at night. Had to finish so I could go home to sleep type of late work day. I had a strainer bag on the pump but it was in paint for a while... might have a blown filter in the spray gun. My personal pumps are taken better care of and I have plenty of extras filters. Thanks for the feedback.
I bought my own hinges years ago. I just swap out hinges and spray trim and door in place. You never have to touch them.
Thanks for the feedback. I like to sand and prep the jambs&doors with hinges out of the way and the doors get sanded and vacuumed production style by dts400 and by hand.

Just curious, what's your favorite primer and topcoat? Liked the video and the system.
Phil Parker I like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Primer, 217, alkyd enamel underbody. It sprays on smooth and flows out nice and smooth while it dries. It's a slow dry primer, so over night dry and cure. Topcoat is a toss up, just depends on the situation or look required. BM Advance, Insl-x Cabinet Coat, Kelly Moore Dura-poxy. There are many other good (or great) trim paints though, and primers as well for that matter.
XC Painter
Top primer would be Sherwood lacquer undercoater and top coat depending if client wants oil alkyd or even latex
Thanks to XC and Job for your replies. I have been using BM Advance Primer 790 and Advance Top Coat 792. Really like both. Airless straight out of the can but if I have to use hvlp for a project I have to thin the primer 15% and the top coat 20 to 25% for a smooth coat (at least 2 coats). It changes the sheen from (satin) to a duller sheen. The finish I'd excellent but the sheen won't be the same as shooting un-thinned with airless. Thanks again.
Phil Parker
Ive been also lately a product from Hd called BIN and the base is shellac it dries in seconds lol asson as u spray it dries faster than a lacquer undercoater it's awesome 55$ a gallon but for cabinets great product
Those windows have GOT to be wrecked with overspray 😂
They're covered in plastic?
Well at 2:03 it sure looks like bare glass to me. Why do you put paper over your plastic?
@@GreenDragonPainting that was masking from when we sprayed the millwork (trim and jambs), then i just covered the bedroom to make a spray booth.
@@GreenDragonPainting well looking at the footage now, it shows two batches of doors being done. The window trim wasn't sprayed yet in the ending footage clip, but the its sprayed and covered when I did the spray footage, either way it turned out absolutely fine.
@@XCPainter yeah definitely, great system. Doors can be tricky with limited space.
Fantastic. Can you make a video how you put the wood blocks at the top of the doors please? Thank you. I'm pleased I found your RUclips channel. I'm a painter trying to be better all time.
XC great as ever. Very compact concentration of doors there. Question how do you attach that block all the way through to the door you must use at least a 4 1/2 inch screw correct ?
Brian Mowers thank you!
My improved method is just laying the blocks down flat instead of on edge. It's better to pre-drill holes to screw through, use 2 1/4" screws through the block as long as it is secure 2.
On this particular job I pre-drilled toenails or angled holes through the blocks, and used two screws. One for each side, two inch screws.
The blocks are a great idea, but what about handling the doors and damaging what you just sprayed? 🤔 No quality issues?
Only touch the tops or inside the knob area... I also put 3" screws for a handle at the top hinge mortise most of the time. Could also attach an actual handle there if you had something like that
@@XCPainter good ideas, thnx! 👍🎅🎄
Have any vids on spraying MDf doors. Have 2 barn doors to spray. Looking for prep and filler products you like to use.
I use Elmer's filler, before primer, and glazing putty for fine filling after primer (or between primer coats).
Usually like oil undercoater primer since it doesn't raise the grains
@@XCPainter I was using glazing body filler for fine filling. Then bin primer can spray the touch ups. Dam messy. Was hoping for a non red dust product.
@@BZ1340 yeah it can be annoying when it seems to create more mess or hassle. They make different color spot glazing like grey, black, white (too hard to see), blue and green. Available automotive paint supply or some automotive stores that have prep products.
is this new construction? I fins it easier to leave the doors hung when i am in a tight occupied space
Yes new construction. I dislike prepping the jambs, doors, and painting with them hung.
When do you do your edges and what do you use?
The top edges? I would brush or mini roll anytime thats convenient
I meant the sides
@@darrencookfishing7961 the sides are getting sprayed at the same time here
I aim the gun at the sides from the left and right angles here.
What happens when you touch the sides of the doors to move them?
Wouldn't want to do that. I'm touching the hinge mortise area and the top of the doors, not and finish surface. To improve with handling then I started putting a 3" or 2 1/2" screw in the hinge mortise area and that gives something to lift from in conjunction with the door handle hole.
What tip are you using to spray with?
Either a 410 or 310
Thanks and I enjoy your videos.@@XCPainter
Don’t you get over spray on the doors you just sprayed?
In this situation, there was a small amount of that going on but it didn't hurt the finish. Only reason the stack was so close- This was the absolute first time I used this method, and I wanted to have the stack visible in the camera frame.
Your touching wet painted doors, that can’t leave a good finish!
Thanks for watching, I'm not touching the finish, just the hinge mortise area and the top edge of door. On occasions after this, I placed a screw or nail in that location for a little handle. (For light doors)
What about all that overspray that got on your finished doors. They need to be moved to another room one at a time.
Yeah I'll admit the stack was close for this batch, merely so they would be visible on the screen. The doors usually will be placed on the opposite wall, but there wasn't any problems with overspray.
Matte?!?!
Satin
@@XCPainter Thank you 😘🌹
Not effective all the doors will be ruff from all the over spray . Better way to go about it .
Thanks for the feedback and I get your point that the stack is close (this was the 1st attempt ever I think) but they turned out fine.
I only put the stack close to demonstrate the method and so they would all show up on the video.
Finger prints all over doors
Louie Kaiser thanks for your feedback but didn't get anything noticeable.
If you watch closely, you will how see he moves the doors. One hand in the Knob hole, the other goes to the hinge recess. Both get covered, hence, no prints.
Watch it again, He leaves No prints, this is a method to deal with a certain situation. And it WORKS VERY WELL
Sorry buddy, you lost me as soon as you started putting your hands on the wet paint.
Aaron Berk You can put a screw or something at the top hinge mortise to avoid that. I believe my fingers stayed in the mortised area for the most part.. always room for improvement. These doors are super light weight. Thanks
