- Neil Young performs a cover of "Changes" originally by Phil Ochs at the Farm Aid concert in Saratoga Springs, NY on September 21, 2013. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?
Such an incredibly beautiful poem! Phil Ochs was such a sensitive soul. Good cover by Neil.
That's cool Neil Young spoke up to that guy. Entertainers are people just like us; they're not puppets. You pay for a ticket and just expect to listen to them " perform ". Live performances are the best. I appreciate those moments when the musician isn't playing and they're making the effort to simply communicate to the people in the audience. These unique musicians deserve our time and respect. Eventually, they perform the songs we want to hear and Neil Young sang Phil Ochs song to the tee. Awesome ...
I work for me beautiful great stuff, greetings from ireland,
@@Agave89 a parallel to Roger Waters there
Great song by Phil and Kudos to Neil Young for his really nice comments. Coming from Neil to say that Phil was the greatest songwriter ever is a tremendous compliment and well deserved.
"I'm on my way buddy! I work for me!"
That was a good one!
You bet ya !!!! That was a great one !
should have said 'hey I work for you guys, but if you have somewhere better to be I'm not stoppin' you!'
Definitely!
I agree man
i heard that he said i work for farm aid
Phil Ochs is one of my heroes. A man who used his God-given talents to try to make this world a better place.
👍...with or without you...🙂
I first heard Phl Ochs' "Changes" in 1966. It was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. My favorite Phil Ochs song is "The Highway Man"
Neil says Phil Ochs was one of the greatest singer-songwriters who ever lived. So true. Thanks for the tribute Neil
He Neil, hope you will live forever. Ím so sad about our loose of David. i got all your records here and I hope you will live forever.
This has me in tears. I’m a Phil Ochs fan from long ago. 😢 Such a loss.
I respect Neil a lot for singing this and the shout-out he gave to Phil. Amazingly great song.
Oh man, what a song. Neil's songs never fails to touch my heart no matter where I'm at in life. This one sure did. What beautiful words and what a wonderful tribute to the songwriter, too. Neil, if you're out there, know your music is the soundtrack to this 60 year old's life. I hope it's with me to the end, whenever that might be.
This makes me weep ... Neil Young covering this song by someone who was so beautiful and was made so sad by the world. A toast to Neil Young for singing this and to Phil Ochs for existing ...
NO one has ever written a better song than this, and it might be the best poetic lyrics ever. So deep, so uncompromizingly deep.

My dad introduced me to Neil Young when I was a little kid, he always used to play "Needle and the Damage Done" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" on guitar, and I loved it. I'm almost 30 now, and Neil still continues to captivate me. So I have to thank my father (who luckily, is still around to enjoy Neil's music with me to this day) for showing me his incredible music so many years ago.
I discovered Phil Ochs's music about a year ago, and everything I've found of his I've loved. Neil paying tribute to Phil is AMAZING.
Did you know that "Cowgirl in the Sand" was partly inspired by Jean Ray Glover, who with her husband, Jim Glover, had been housemates with Phil Ochs when he first came to NY? Jim Glover had been part of a duo with Phil when they were college roommates and Glover taught Ochs to play the guitar. Jean had written (and later recorded a song about the Buffalo Springfield drug bust, "Topango road" on her third album with Jim, _People World_), and Neil commented on the lyrics, written in purple ink on gray paper.

Those first few notes hit like a kick to the gut. RIP Phil
What a beautiful song by Phil Ochs. My respect for Neil grows daily ... and indeed, life is short. He's right when he said some changes we can't change but we can change climate change. I hope we stand together as one heart, one voice for renewable energy and for living in harmony with nature for the betterment of all life and future generations. Cheers to Neil & all who care.
I still get emotional when I hear
"Natural Beauty".
I hope we can stand with one heart, but also something of a brain will be required as well. There is no stopping climate change without nuclear.
@@roenvalenzuela2492 Indeed. One of my favorites from his extensive catalog of great songs 👍🏽
Neil Young singing Phil Ochs. Doesn't get much better than that.
Yes by I had brother who took his life 1997
I could be wrong but I think he's playing Hank Williams guitar.
@@D1it4FN that would be awesome if it is hanks guitar.
@@mattblack2379 Its Hank Williams guitar. Martin D 28....1941. Named Hank. When your Neil Young anything is possible. You could write a song like Lotta Love and than just give it away as a gift to your girlfriend Nic Larson.
Yes it does, Phil Ochs singing Phil Ochs.
I love him. Everything he said. I will carry that sorrow and regret as well. Honest, raw, and real. Your music live Phil Ochs and you are missed.
No one is going to ""mute"" Neil, he is outspoken , and that,s the way we like him, we need more like him.
Not everyone one likes him for that. I am outspoken and you will not like me for that. The right side is not the Left either. I think Neil's music is better than the best but he doesn't need to lecture the audience here and could play more of what the audience paid for. And his wrongheaded political ideas (just too Left for reality - where has Leftist worked?) belie his sensitivity as shown in his great love of this song and Phil Ochs, the man, lyricist and melody maker of great renown. But he also sings this poorly, I mean sometimes Neil has a voice to die for but not that much here. It's a great great song but his guitar playing could be better and his voice is not up to the usual. He should have just played Phil's audio and shown a film.
who else could engage a heckler and keep his cool, make and win his point?

No more ranting from commenters during a Neil Young song.
Willie Nelson?
@@oppothumbs1 Leftism worked in the United States for one... once at the turn of the century and again in FDR's time. But history isn't taught truthfully and the American working man doesn't even know what he's lost.
I love this song! Phil Ochs was amazing at weaving lyrics, as are you Mr. Young! 🙏🏽❤️
Neil is a gentleman but he doesn't take shit from nobody
Nor anybody !!
Phil Ochs was such a loss. Neil playing this tune is both tragic and inspirational, and it breaks my heart every time I hear it but I applaud him for playing this. Phil would be proud. Thanks, Neil!
I love and respect Phil Ochs, I respect Neil Young too
Neil, My name is Ori. I'll never forget the morning I opened my eyes, checked out the news, and found out you'll be playing in my country.
That morning was 2 mornings ago.
My name is Ori.
And I'm from Israel.
This is a great song that Phil Ochs sang beautifully and melodiously. I didn't know what it would sound like by Neil Young. I realize that Neil sings everything well in his unique style. None of the gentleness of this song was lost.
I think you stated this perfectly. This clipped style with a little "rest" between measures fractures the song. When Phil sang it there was a gentle flow that emphasized a legato melody. No words will describe it really but in Phil's repertoire this was just his magic. Thrilled that perhaps people might explore Phil's work after hearing this song. Silly comment at end of the tune... hey some people just talk too much... point made from singing the song... no comment necessary.
This is fantastic. Phil Ochs will not be forgotten.

Been one my favorite songs since he recorded it in 1965-6

@@andrealanzillotta4388 That's so true. There was talk about a movie with Sean Penn but they probably would have played the more Leftist songs and left about great personal songs like this and it would not reach a lot of people. I’ve loved Phil’s music since he stormed the Greenwich Village clubs in the 1960s. Great to see Neil, another favorite artist of mine, show this respect.
Phil Ochs is a legend that many people don't know about. RIP Phil... we miss you
Can't believe this just now popped up on my RUclips in June 2019. I've been collecting all the RUclips videos of Phil's songs for a bunch of years. I'm of that age (70), that grew up on Phil Ochs (and all the rest of the great 'topical' (protest) music singers, writers etc.
I always thought Phil was better then Dylan. I was very lucky to see him perform many times in the 60's and early 70's. later.
His lyrics were profound, even more so, now 50-60 yrs later when one takes a look at the US and the state of the world overall.
I strongly encourage those not familiar with him, to Google him and pull up RUclips songs here.
Thanks Neil Young for the song and words about Phil.
So envy anyone who saw Phil Ochs perform live. I've admired him for 54 years since first hearing him on my radio. Listen to these amazing words! A glimpse into his heart.
At 64 still wishing I can grow up to be Neil Young!
Haha, and I'm 67 and still wishing I could grow up to marry Neil Young.

Love the intro. Such a beautiful tribute to the one and only Phil Ochs. ❤️

C'mon let's go... to any memories you have about Phil... talk as long as you wish about him! I'll love it!
Thank you Neil for performing a heart-felt cover of "Changes" by Phil Ochs. You made my day!
Who can command a stage like this? With a long forgotten song by a dead folk singer? I LOVE this artist. I love this Phil Ochs song.
Neil does it.
Neil does such a great version of this song. I am really glad he did thid song and praised Phil. Hopefully this might make some new fans of Phil.
Made me a fan! I love Neil and decided to look into Phil, great music!
Lightfoot does an awesome version too....
Phil was amazing! I think his “Rehearsals For Retirement” was his absolute best album, personally, but “Pleasures Of The Harbour” and “Tape From California😏😊
...oops...🙈... “were good as well. I was greatly saddened hearing of his issues with mental illness, and was not terribly surprised to hear of his death. I always have believed that it was caused largely because he “cared” too much. There are a couple of good vids of him here on RUclips. Thanks Neil for reminding everyone what a superb entertainer he was!
@@markusarrow Changes was on Lightfoot’s first album.... where I first heard the song. Made me a Phil Ochs fan instantly.... already was a Lightfoot fanatic! Both artists and songwriters of the ultimate kind... even as a teen I could see their superlative talent!!! Still a great fan of them both now that I’m 73!
I believe he plays Hank William's guitar here and Phil Ochs would have so loved that!
One of the greatest songs ever written - poetry put to music. Glad to know Neil thinks so too - a wonderful tribute to Ochs.
Phil Ochs. Too much greatness for this world.💙
was fortunate to see Phil Ochs perform this in the Villiage more than once... I miss him so much... and also think of Jean Ray ..also gone... who was the first to do Phil Ochs songs along with then partner Jim Glover... and think of Dave Van Ronk ..also long gone... who walked the same streets as Phil, in the Village in the 60s
Absolutely beautiful...even with 3+ minutes of Neil Young ramblings. In fact, the ramblings make it even more poignant.
Ochs really was one of the great (under)sung singer-songwriters of all time. It's a goddamn shame that more people weren't exposed to his art.

THis is wonderful, but mine was hearing Phil sing many times during Berkeley Vietnam Day(s) May 1965.
Neil was the reason I learned to play guitar, sing and write back in 1970. I've been playing his tunes alongside mine ever since. I love the guy like a brother. He's given me a life of time of inspiration and has gotten me through some hard times. Long may you run Neil.

Hello Dear catmoondaddy. I see you wrote 8 years back. Hey! Happy to read your beautiful letter. I live in N Z, and have a friend who plays Neil with love and writes his own songs too and busks in our town. He's an American (lived here 4 ever tho) and he sounds really authentically Neil. It's a comfort, knowing folk are copying his vocals, keeping him ringing in far Southern Isles. xx

".. .and it's long as hell". . . about as long as the introduction. Great job Neil, of a great song by Phil Ochs.
It was absolutely splendid,,!!!! Thanks forever so Neil, Blessings!!! From London
One of my new favorite songs, thank you🎉
You tell them Neil. You talk as much as you want. We love to listen to anything you want to say!
Its always nice to have a story/testimony behind a song which makes it more meaningful than the song itself..I think that man is rude to try and ask Neil to "hurry up I just want you to sing". He's probably someone who missed a lot in life when he doesnt learn to sit still and listen. He's definately a poor listener to his girl friend, wife, parents, friends, colleagues etc...
Sit by my side, come as close as the air
Share in a memory of gray
And wander in my words
Dream about the pictures that I play of changes
Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall
To brown and to yellow, they fade
And then they have to die
Trapped within the circle time parade of changes
Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind
Visions of shadows that shine
One day I returned and found they were
Victims of the vines of changes
The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark
It swings through a hollow of haze
A race around the stars
A journey through the universe ablaze with changes
Moments of magic will glow in the night
Fears of the forest are all gone
But when the morning breaks
They're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes
Passions will part to a strange melody
As fires will sometimes burn cold
Like petals in the wind
We're puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes
Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else
One last cup of wine we will pour
And I'll kiss you one more time
And leave you on the rolling river shore
L
Beautiful poem
Thank you for the lyrics!
God those are beautiful lyrics.
Sorrowful and poetic, this tribute to Phil Ochs moves me so deeply. The feelings of failure to save the suicide are universal. I’ve lost family, my best friend was murdered, but the suicide of a mentor hit me the hardest.
NEIL WORKS FOR NEIL. You don't find any better. Serves the big mouth in the audience right. NO PATIENCE. ROCK ON MR YOUNG.......

Thanks, Neil. A great performance. I’m pleased that you brought visibility to Phil Ochs who was a wonderful songwriter.
At 3:07 the crowd reacts to Phil Ochs' name; good to hear. As ever, a fine performance by Neil. No surprise, there.
I too lost a friend to suicide last year. Thought I could have done something more, too, to reach him,to stop him. Be he made the horrible choice. He threw everything away in that moment, to run from himself, and his fear. Thanks Neil, for this great intro, and song. SO glad to be alive and to have been a part of this awesome day at SPAC!
Eco....thirty yrs working crisis has taught me...not so much folks are running from themselves and theirfear as you put it, more that...they have no more left,,,,,,,,and love and support just didnt get there in time. These acts...suicides, touch me in the deepest sad place...i do, however, get it. meg

Neil Young calling Phil Ochs "one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived"...You cant' get more right than that! Thank you Neil for a beautful version of Phil's beautiful song. To quote Billy Bragg: "Phil Ochs inspires us still"
In the balcony that day, Neil at his best. Good to listen to Pete Seeger one more time...Don't cross Mr. Young..
Life is so short, I've had those freinds and missed those moments but there gone and that was there choice, all we can say is goodbye
Actually, last time Phil appeared in public (mentioned around 3:20) was not Carnegie Hall but at the large Vietnam victory rally/celebration in Central Park in 1975 after the independence of Vietnam was won, with Joan Baez and others. He sang "The War Is Over", perhaps his masterpiece. He was suffering from acute depression and probably bi-polar disorder; there were no psychotropic medications to help then, and pycho-therapy has improved much since too. He exited the world soon afterward.
Great version, so faithful to Phil's spirit. Thanks (again) Neil.
thank. you. for. sharing. this. tribute. to. Phil. ochs. may. his. music live. on. forever. amen
Phil Ochs appreciated the advice from others in the industry. Dylan only did when he could use a song as his own without worry that they would say something to the affect of “hey, I wrote that song.” By then, Dylan had it copyrighted usually with no credit given to the songwriter who actually RE-wrote the song both words and music. He took advantage of those who he trusted, he had a plan from the day he arrived in New York City and his plan included to use whoever he trusted not to say those horrendous words, the Battle cry of Bob Dylan was and he achieved this thanks to the many who helped Dylan but gave their word backed by honor and friendship. Bobby, sadly, didn’t share that integrity..
@@Jennings9462 Yup, I gotta agree. The more one learns about Bob Zimmerman the less one likes him on a personal level.
He did a few appearances at some clubs in late 1975, when he was in his bizarre and tragic John Train phase. There's an October 1975 recording at Gerde's Folk Club which circulates.
Phil ochs was definetly bipolar, you can hear the manic energy and/or the intense emotion in his songs

RIP Phil Ochs. We need you today. You were right. Fascism has come to the USA.
Fascism is on the Left too. If you don't see that, you are a blind ideologue and ideology is a straightjacket to clear thinking. Also Phil's version is much better than Neil's, maybe Neil needs a little more orchestration as i want to world to know about Phil too. The greatest songwriters are Neil, Dylan, John Lennon with the Beatles, and Phil could be in the top 10. Paul Westerberg of the Replacements was also a genius. You don't have to be a Leftist to love Phil, he could just write so humanely and brilliantly.
Buffie Saint Marie, Donovan Leitch, Dory Previn, Sandy Bull, it all depends on when you started listening to singer= songwriters and how they got under your skin and into your heart. The Train they call the City of New Orleans was not an Arlo Guthrie original.

The far left (not even as far left as the communists) can be rigid and ideological, but fascism (personified at its most extreme in 1920s-1940s Germany and today by the leader of the once respectable GOP) is way over at the furthest right of the political spectrum.
