Bob Dylan - Hurricane (Live on PBS, 1975) [RARE ORIGINAL AUDIO]

- After many requests, here is the other part of Dylan's appearance at WTTW-TV Studios in Chicago on September 10, 1975. This particular video is very special because most other versions you will hear have overdubbed lines on verses 2, 4, 7, and 10. Here is the explanation: This performance was recorded about a month after the first version of "Hurricane" was recorded (find this early version here: • Bob Dylan - Hurricane ... ). This was about to be released as a single when Columbia's lawyers blocked it from release, citing worries about lines regarding Arthur Dexter Bradley and Alfred Bello, the two main witnesses, being false and grounds for defamation lawsuits. Read more about this on the "Controversy and Re-recording" section on this page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurrica.... Dylan re-recorded the song again in October. This all happened after this performance, though, so Dylan was still singing his original lyrics. The first broadcast of this concert had the original lyrics, which is what you hear here, but in the second broadcast the following year, controversial lines were overdubbed with the "safe" album version. You can hear the overdubbing relatively clearly at 1:34, 2:52, 5:06, and 7:16 on this video: • Bob Dylan Hurricane ... .
He played two songs after this one: "Oh, Sister" (watch it here: • Bob Dylan - Oh, Sister... ) and "Simple Twist of Fate" (watch it here: watch/?v=161.... It's a shame that Dylan's channel doesn't upload good quality versions of this entire concert.
In my opinion, this is the definitive live version of Hurricane; It's so good that I've found myself watching this performance over and over again, and I have "music ADHD" (the habit of skipping songs I've heard after the first verse). I edited this video together using three sources: 1. An original, complete VHS tape is used in the beginning as the host and John Hammond introduce Dylan, 2. A higher-quality transfer I obtained from a bootleg DVD is used for the footage of Dylan's actual performance, and 3. A soundboard audiotape is overdubbed to footage.
This was recorded for the PBS special, "The World of John Hammond", which celebrated the influence and success of legendary talent scout and producer John Hammond; he can be seen at 2:18 grooving along to Dylan's performance. Taping took place at WTTW-TV Studios in Chicago on September 10, 1975, and also included "Hurricane" and "Simple Twist of Fate". This recording was subsequently broadcast that December, and then once more the following year.
Legends such as Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson were also featured on this show. Whereas they accepted PBS's invitation months in advance, Dylan confirmed just two days prior, as is typical! He recruited some of the musicians who played on his recently completed album, "Desire": Scarlet Rivera (violin), Howie Wyeth (drums), and Rob Stoner (Bass & Backup vocals). This band eventually became the core of Dylan's set on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, which would start touring the next month. So, one could argue that this is the earliest live performance of the Rolling Thunder Revue. The raw, whispy sound that this four-piece band makes is really incredible, so I wish we had more recordings like this.
Interestingly, when Dylan recruited these musicians, he only told them that they were doing a gig in Chicago, mentioning nothing about being broadcasted on a major television station with Columbia executives in the audience, and not to mention John Hammond himself. Here is a fascinating anecdote from Rivera:
"Bob asked me and the trio of Rob and Howie to join him in Chicago for the tribute to John Hammond Sr, who changed the course of music by his vision and courage to sign many greats, including Bob Dylan, to CBS. This was another First. I had never performed on live TV and now it was going to be in front of every senior executive of CBS and a viewing audience of millions! I am amazed still that Bob had confidence in me to pull this extremely important concert off without failing on live TV, especially as this show was before a single live concert to support Desire. I would also perform "A Simple Twist of Fate" with him, and I had only rehearsed it that afternoon once backstage. Appreciating the song and playing it live with the man himself are two very different things! I was incredibly tense and taut, but I indeed pulled it off, and it is my all-time favorite video of playing live with him."
Love & Peace,
~SP
The fact that Dylan chose this 8 minute song to perform live on a major PBS special - one of the most searing and unfiltered indictments of the racist penal justice system in the United States by a "popular" artist - is a testament to the man's courage and convictions.
What makes you think he thought about it.?

Writing a timeless masterpiece, but all the lyrics are lies. He's glorifying a homicidal sociopath and defaming the victims. That's why he stopped singing this song after the 2nd trial, after a Black jury also found them guilty.
@@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr eye witness says you are wrong
@@kenmiller7708 Four different eyewitnesses saw Artis and Carter flee the scene of the homicide. Hazel Tanis gave a good description of the killer with the pistol to police. They drew a sketch of her description, and it matches John Artis. She also told her daughter that Artis and Carter were the ones who shot her. Also, Artis and Carter both flunked lie detector tests given to them just hours after the shootings.
Some of the verses in this song give me the cold shivers. Dylan is a genius.

I agree, it's one of the most amazing songs ever written, but there are people online who argue persuasively that Rubin was guilty...very guilty, and Bob got it wrong. Rubin was tried twice and convicted each time. The third time, many years later, he was freed, but not exonerated, by the most liberal judge in the state......Check it out for yourself.....But hey, I would want Bob to write a song about me if I was convicted, falsely or other wise.....

But it's important to note that the lyrics are vicious lies, and Hurricane actually did do the murders in cold blood.
@@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr WOW Really? I did not know that. I still havent seen the movie, so I dont know how its portrayed. So he really did do it huh?
@@henryshockem9242 The killers sped off in a white dodge polara. Hurricane Carter was stopped by police driving away from the scene of the crime in his white Dodge Polara. It's not a common car. Eyewitnesses saw Hurricane and Artis and IDd them. Also, once in police custody hours after the shooting, Artis and Carter didn't have matching stories about what they had just been doing that night. They were given lie detector tests, and they both flunked them. Hurricane Carter himself has given three or four different versions of the story of what supposedly went down tha4 night. After he was freed, he claimed that the police planted fake bodies in the bar, and nobody was actually even killed. Does that version of the story sound at all plausible to anyone?
The killers used an unusual caliber of bullets. .32 caliber bullets in the pistol they used. Hurricane's white polara had .32 caliber pistol bullets strewn on the floor of the car when police arrested them. It's not exactly rocket science..32 caliber isn't even in the top 15 of bullet sizes. It's quite rare. They hid the guns and got rid of them, but they missed some bullets they dropped on the floor of Hurricane's car. Why isn't any of that in the song or the movie? Instead, there is a completely make-believe story about unhinged police officers who framed him. None of that stuff actually happened in real life, and the incriminating things Hurricane Carter did, like having 4 or 5 very different versions of his story about what he was doing that night. None of the stuff that makes Hurricane Carter look guilty is mentioned in the song or the film. Between his first and second trials, he beat up a black bail bonds lady so badly that she almost died. She didn't press charges and so police decided not to persue it. They could at least have shown that. Bob Dylan hasn't performed this song live since the 2nd trial when a Black jury found Artis and Carter guilty, and after everyone knew Carter beat up that bail bonds lady so badly, he put her in the hospital.
@@henryshockem9242 More than a few liberties were taken. Police pulled him over, fleeing the scene of the crime, mere blocks away from the bar. Or as Bob Dylan put it "on the other side of town." Every single part of the song is fictitious and based on lies the killer told.
@@henryshockem9242 I know it's one of his best songs. I still listen to it. I still listen to his songs glorifying John Wesley Harding and George Jackson. But I know what he's doing. He's always glorified killers to cash in on the racial demographics of the US. I'm a fellow Jew, I see what he's doing with this song. Pitting the different gentile races against each other and race-baiting to make a quick buck for himself. It doesn't reflect well on the Jewish race. He shouldn't be out there manipulating gentiles in exchange for fame and financial gain.
I can imagine this song is extremely difficult to sing let alone remember each line and then phrase it perfectly..unique and genius
👍🏻
Well he wrote the lines so they mean something to him so the words come natural. And he doesnt phrase it the same every time. He and most musicians start to vary their rhythmical phrasing after their initial recording of the song after repetitive performances of it to keep it sounding fresh.
It amazes me the amount pf lyrics Dylan has to remember for each concert

Stumbled on this via diamonds and rust by Joan Baez. I saw Hurricane performed in London in the late seventies. Scarlet blew us all away that night, but I have to say the intensity of this version is killing. Bob has done so much, it's hard when you try to comment on a genius. We know. But on this recording we feel every word. The rhythm is all Bob a the back beat and bass threading pistol shots in the dark. What a song, at last about something real. A mans life rotting in. prison cell for something he didn't do. Racism in its most profound form. Bless you Bob and bless you kind people for liking this and appreciating the art and the humanity. I heard it recently with Tracey Chapman on the Grammy's. The power of a simple song told powerfully. Respect.
June 17, 1966 was the day Rubin Carter was arrested. He was exonerated in 1988. It is quite an amazing story, with his release being made possible with the help of a bunch of Canadians and the great Bobby D. This is a fantastic video and I thank you for posting it.

This song is one of Bobs greatest freedom songs , where he stood against the world with his message of truth , already then the evil of corruption and tyranny was shown, but people went sleeping again, dreaming into slavery, and thought it was easy to lean on the same people which destroyed societies then, they still do today, its time they leave, enough is enough. Listen to Bob and take charge of your life and those of the others and innocent and stand for freedom, light . Blessings and grace to Bob and those other freedom fighters who never stopped ! Remember the newspaper (media ) went along with the ride...... never trust media, science trust your own eyes
Excellent (from France).
Hurricane Carter was a monster who killed multiple people. I guess "truth" in this case is subjective ?
i was fortunate enough to meet and speak to the man Bob is singing about. Ruben "hurricane" Carter. He was doing motivational speeches/testimonial for some insurance company. Whatever the reason was, it was really cool getting to meet him. i couldn't imagine how horrible it must have been to rot in prison for that many years while he was in his prime and such a great boxer, only to finally get out when he was too old to box any more. He died in 2014. I loved the movie with Denzel Washington, and i have always loved this song.
He did it! No doubt about. I think *three* separate juries convicted him! Read the case. he was not innocent. Every time he was convicted...a white judge sprung him. Motivational speaker? LOL Just a con man.

This is by far Dylan's best song ever. I've never been a Dylan fan although I have been around through his many years. He combines his story telling with a true story, real people, social justice....it has it all. With excellent music, and highlights his playing.
It certainly made me more aware of not just Carter, but our sad sad legal system.
For me, Dylan's oeuvre is more about the story and songwriting than the musicality. This man is the prime example that you can play simple chords with an amazing story and still make one of the best songs ever. He's done this multiple times, including this song. I mean look at Times They Are A Changin', Like a Rolling Stone, Blowin' in the Wind, Tangled Up in Blue & A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. I'm positive there are more examples, but these are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head.

If I am remembering correctly this was penned with another writer helping.
unbelievable how good this sounds, drums guitar violin bass. as good as on record. dylan what a legend
I agree with others who say the violin adds so much to the song,... dylan has the unique ability to evoke emotion in lyrics and music.
Justice is still a game, things haven't changed at all in nearly 50 years. Ya gots the $ then u have half a chance, regardless of whether u r guilty or not. Just ask our old mate the trumpster
Oh Pig!!! What a performance!! I was spellbound. Thank you for your kind consideration and uploading this to share. God Bless& thank you
People dog on his voice. But here’s the thing, he’s one of the best performers ever. Everything is so on point wow.
Yeah man he is one of the best singers of all time. People who say he can’t sing only like pretty voices, they don’t understand blues.
I feel like people gave up dogging on his voice 30 years ago.
He very literally might have the most endurance of any performer who has ever lived. Doing shows consistently for *60* fucking years. SIX-ZERO. It's wild. "Best" is basically meaningless though. I love his voice.
His voice was fantastic. His voice was suited to what he sang. He sang like a wildcat. He was possessed. He meant what he said.
@@octagonseventynine1253 They don't understand music. Period. Not even a conversation worth having for those who understand. Music is not some bizarre art of scientific perfection??
Just brilliant, what can one say. And 47 years ago this was on live TV!
I had this once on an old VHS, on a bootleg bought somewhere in the late 90s. Still stings and stuns. Just perfect.
It’s sort of hard to believe this actually happened. Amazing. Never realized the Disco influences on this song before. Performed live it really makes you want to move. Bob rules.
This is the best version I’ve ever heard. Thanks for posting it.
absolutely the best, and the studio mix on 'Desire' is phenomenal
I had a terrible quality version of this for 20+ years. It is my favorite.
Agreed! Bob's phrasing is immaculate.
it is a great performance indeed and it is so revealing the injustice in our world and corrupt judges that don't even try to hide their racism. And how he could fit all that in a song and make. it entertainment and at the same time make people think a little further than their noses
Go listen to it in Dazed and Confused 1993 before you make a fool of yourself again in public
God's work. You're doing God's work SP. How many times have I said it? This is so great. "Hurricane" was on the radio in 1975 and it launched my Dylan epiphany and high school obsession. I'd never heard anything like it and still haven't. Love this 4 piece band! ✌😎
I feel the same unexplainable as he himself has told often he can't say where how it comes through I say modern day disciples exist as years before. . I am no religious extraodinare its transcending, nearly biblical, not cult But far and wide his fan base is driven by his intellect, his connections of people, place, time, history, art, music, rhyme, parable, lyrical, and moving, I've been amazed by this man all my life, he is consistent, for ever changing and in tune with our changing times as a great historian as precarious and straight to the point as he is he keeps the social sciences on a time-line. No doubt
I read the biography of Ruben “Hurricane” Carter several years ago and it is an excellent and heartbreaking book. One thing that you realize from the book is how seriously Dylan took the writing of this song, interviewing Carter numerous times in jail and penning a song that is artistically genius and yet also historically very very accurate. There will never be another Bob Dylan
Dylan’s vocal phrasing is next level.
The accompaniment, Dylan's phrasing and rhythm such a powerful moving force. He's added so much to the lexicon, to poetry; a wondrous gift for the interpretation of the world, that Nobel Prize was deserved.
Many thanks for this upload, and your explanation. Scarlet also said that Dylan changed the key just before they started, so that she would have to concentrate on the music instead of her nervousnress. Rob Stoner has confirmed this recently.
Heard her say that too. You can see it in her eyes. I think Bob was saying something about the importance of this performance.
Yeah it looks like he has a capo on the first fret before the song starts, and takes it off just before he starts strumming and switches the harmonica too.
And Howie on drums is just like... key change? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm 62. Trust me this is one of the best Dylan songs ever. The best live Dylan song done in my opinion. I'm a musician.... guitar vocals... just wow not woke.
Petit français que je suis, petit niveau au niveau musical.
Mais Bob Dylan est un Mr !!!
Le bonjour de France qui jadis était un beau pays où il faisait bon vivre 😢
Yes. I agree.
I'm 63. Trust me, this song sucks fr 🗣🗣
A great injustice, portrayed with such conviction and passion.
What a great song writing.
like in 'Hattie Carroll,' Bob doesn't glibly deal in platitudes or pop movements, he goes right to the human story that exposes us all. Thanks so much SP
Except it's all bullshit. Carter was completely guilty--and Dylan got every verse wrong!...www.graphicwitness.com/carter/
@@wehaveasituation wtf
@@wehaveasituation Correct. Hattie Carroll was full of bullshit also.
I
No, Bob has always been a hollow chameleon...as for the hideous murderer Carter...www.graphicwitness.com/carter/song.html
@@jerrypeters2095 no. He took the words from the newspaper when writing The Lonesome Death of Hattie Caroll.
A giant, singular and never to be repeated. He stands at the top of themountain of greatest songwriters ever.
Just my opinion, but I put Neil young and George Harrison right up there with him.. but they with Bob, not Bob with them
Top 10
@@JamesJones-cx5pk Agree there's also Bobs friend and genius Phil Ochs!!
Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne.
There’s Dylan and Cohen on the peak.
Timeless song, real masterpiece ! Excellent performance: Bob simply perfect...
fantastic footage!
I hope you get my apology for doubting you. My idiocy for listening to the wrong people and talking to the wrong people. So so sorry
Listening out loud on external speakers - sweet mercy! ❤
This is an unexpected treat. What a performance.
Good music, RUclips and other distractions (usually entertainment or sports) getting me through the pandemic. Thanks again, Bob.
There's a reason he's the best song writer of our time,he can spin a tale and have you on edge of your seat the whole time
I love this tune. To lighten things up a little he reminds me of "Happy Gilmore".
The violinist is exceptional.
I've always love this song, but never heard this version. Wonderful and a great story behind it. Wow, what a beautiful genius.
It's Bob's passionate mastery of the extensive lyrics, the driving backbeat and the sublime but melancholy tones of Scarlet Rivera's violin that, for me, make this a stand out track. Great top see this rare and original recording, thank you so much!
HELL not a bad rhythm guitar on dylans behalf 👍
Bob Dylan y Leonard Cohen los grandes poetas de la música. Dos monstruos.
Those with EARS will HEAR
I loved Leonard’s comment about Dylan being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature..... ‘It’s like pinning a medal on Mount Everest for being the tallest mountain’
Also, listen to Rodriguez (Sugar man). Just as good 👍
SP...what great work you do, thanks so much
Bod is one of the greatest storytellers and poets of the 20th century. That is something that will never be forgotten. What a legacy.
This is when he decided to change the key of the song right before playing right? Crazy how band still managed to performed it so well. Legendary performance for sure.
Yeah…an old Bob trick…you can see him remove the capo and then change harmonica at around 1:51
@@nickcallil6971 Drummer is like: "Easy peasy I've got this" 🤣
music used to be played by musicians
I think Chuck Berry often would do likewise, change the key. Not so difficult for other real pros to follow providing they are not taken by surprise.
Not so hard for professionals.
almost 70 now, thanks for the memories... just cool as ever. love the violinist, she has the vibe
Love seeing Bob with a small band and as the only guitar player. They were all feeling that one!
Terrific cut. Intimate stage. A new sound that night with Scarlet cutting through. Apparently, they played through Hurricane twice - at the beginning and end of the short set. But this is enough! Intense, driven and lucid. A bit spicy for PBS
I wonder if playing it again had something to do with deviation from the original lyrics. I noticed a lot of differences.
Right…. Not sure you could get away with even “ass” or “son-of-a-bitch” then…
@@jewelsandbinoculars1 He uses the language ordinary people speak - probably quite restrained for the racist police officers!
I remember this song on the radio, but this is the first time I ever saw this performance. Much respect.
Boxing While Black.
I love this song and love the fact that he wrote this song about what happened to the famous boxer Rueben “Hurricane” Carter
Hey how are you doing..?
I am not a Dylan "fan", but that is more about his singing. He is a master craftsman in regards to song writing. There are so many Dylan songs that I prefer when sung by another artist. This song in particular is a tour de force of song writing and story telling - something lacking in today's music where the "artists" don't write their own music and it's all auto-tuned (hell, even I sound good with auto-tune). You can see the song in your head as he sings. That is a true master. [and unfortunately we are still dealing with the injustice of racism on our streets 50 years later :( ]
His singing is his best attribute. No-one blends meaning into his words like he does.
And you are not a fan, ok.
Such a powerful performance. Dylan was such a genius. This song always gave me goosebumps. I remember hearing this song for the first time in high school and immediately bought the Desire album. He is one of our great storytellers made only stronger and more impactful in the form of song.
Is.
mindblowing..
Back in the early 60s I wasn’t a real Dylan fan , did not like his voice . But my friends all listen to him so I had to , then one Stoney day I actually listen to him and at that moment I got it . The poet of our time and such a good story teller .
Stoney days…..remember the good times. Now it's nostalgia trips on youtube with a beer or two, aint so bad. Sometimes you get a tear in your eye, you'll know what i mean Mike.
My mother always used to say who is that man voice you always play Everyday I always loved him and that was from day one and it's lasted all these years
You never do get it quite like that first time that you get it. And isn’t it strange how easy it is to forget it, until you hear that song and are transported back to that one time that you had it..
I had the same experience in the same period
Dylan is an acquired taste. I didn't get him til I saw him live...
Straight up genius, I'm speechless... Thank you so much for this ❤️
1 of my fav songs of all time
