Ed Bradley was very ill at the time of this interview, but he soldiered on.
He died 2 years later. This interview of Dylan showcased what a tremendous journalist and professional he was. Rest in peace...

Sad he died at such a young age. Agree wholeheartedly, he was tremendous. Sadly journalists of this quality are either no longer given a platform or are drown out by so many voices brought on by the internet. The internet gives a voice to people that do not religiously follow journalist ethics like Ed Bradley and most of the great ones. As a result the truth is more difficult to ascertain.
Yeah. Thank God for the Internet, otherwise, I wouldn’t have seen much of him here in the UK. One channel did actually used to show the American 60 minutes (months later than originally broadcast in the US) in the late 80s and early 90s, but it was always on at an ungodly hour, like two or three in the morning.
He lets the interviewee finish, and he asks relevant questions, not the ‘who shagged who?’ type of frivolous nonsense.
You can see that Dylan is showing him respect. He’s giving proper answers; if Dylan doesn’t like the broadcaster, he doesn’t hold back, he lets them have it, so this speaks volumes for Ed Bradley.
Ed was cool. He always seemed comfortable with creative types.
I knew his mother; she was a friend of mine. She was a great and she had hundreds and hundreds of friends many of whom were members of the Twin Cities Jewish community.
I worked at a country club that she was a member of and it took me a lot of courage to broach the topic of Dylan with her. I waited until I had gotten to know her fairly well responded to one of her frequent mentions of "Bobby" to nervously say "Bobby, that's Bob" she cut me off and said "that's right, Bob Dylan".
She was just a typical Jewish mother who was insanely proud of her children and grandchildren. The last time I saw her was in Lunds grocery store when she spotted me and after we exchanged pleasantries she asked me if I was still working at the University of St Thomas because she had a grandson who was starting there in the fall and wanted me to look him up.
This kid was a serious musician:. His primary instrument was either drums or guitar but was good enough to teach both. One day I was in one of the music spaces and I heard someone playing an absolutely amazing classical piece on the piano. It was complicated and was being played sans mistakes. When I got close enough to see who was playing this beautiful piece the player looked up and it was him. I'm no musician but to be that good at three very different instruments at age 20 strikes me as being a rare trait.

My cousin's dad's brother's girlfriend's dad's nephew's daughter's boyfriend was a friend of a friend that went to one of his concerts one time
So insightful and Thank You for sharing a beautiful picture of Bob Dylan was lucky to see him perform and Willie Nelson in 2005 with my Brother 10 years older.. He told me I wanted to see Mr. Dylan before I die. Thank God they're still both Alive. The next day our 101.5 year old Grandma passed away and sharper than a tack. 💞 Still have the local newspaper. ✌️💞🥁🎸🎤
I am 73 years old and consider my generation fortunate to have grown up with the music of our time. Bob Dylan was the cornerstone of that music

Blessed by the devil and he admits it when he talks about making a deal with the chief commander. 2nd Corinthians 4:4 states Satan is the god of this world so Dylan's nothing to admire. Sold his soul!
My dad used to play Dylan constantly when i was growing up, i found it annoying until i was about 15, my dad gave me a book of his lyrics written down and I read them, they touched my soul in a way i cant explain. Im 34 now and I have had the honor of seeing him perform once, he still has the magic, he is the magic. I sung "make you feel my love" to my husband at my wedding reception as a suprise, my dad suprised me with a second daddy daughter dance "forever young"...no one knew about either plan beforehand except the DJ. Dylan is a huge part of the relationship i have with my dad to this day.

One Dylan quote when asked why he came out with a new album after being quiet for a season was “I needed the money”. I loved the honesty.

Yes! Because he actually read the book and understood it! Having just read it myself (listened via Audible) I can affirm that he read it because the whole way through Dylan maintains that he was not who people thought he was, who they intended him to be or said he was publicly and for decades. Amazing!

Yes. You are right. The most straight forward I've ever heard him. He took the interview seriously. He wasn't running his eyes or dodging or giving smart ass comments. I saw this the first time it broadcast. I even got off work early to watch it. Now, I wouldn't do any of that for anyone but that was then and this is now. He is a force to be reckoned with and people still are.
Funny how respect can do that. Ed was my favourite on 60 minutes.

There are a few Bob is one of them I'd have to include Paul McCartney. He wrote I'll follow the Sun when he was 15 where did that come from at 15.
In addition to giving the world great songs Dylan is hilarious...mostly because he doesn't take himself too seriously. There are a ton of musical folks, far far less talented, who would benefit themselves greatly by doing the same. Love this guy!

He doesn't "need" to keep at it for the usual reasons such as money, fame, adulation, etc. He needs to keep at it because he's still alive and has to do something with his live/time like any true artist. The drive to create doesn't necessarily stop at some arbitrary age or moment.

Do you realize he is over 80 years old now. This interview was taken about 20 years ago when he was 63. I'm so glad he is still living and hopefully doing well. I've been a great fan of Bob Dylan, went to his concerts around Europe in the 80+90es. I stopped when his voice got too rusty. But always emotionally yours Bob !

Holy mother of God. This interview has depth. It says something about American culture regarding the dynamics of rebellious youth and their parents. Every generation has this dynamic, but American culture gave rebellious youth an opportunity to glamorize their rebellion through the medium of art in the form of entertainment. Man, there is a lot to dissect about this.

Easily the most poignant and pinpoint comment added here...
I stumbled upon some interesting information about him recently,
it’s hard to stomach once learning of it because it’s ...

no puns, only a clue of what he would find in his own life after that masterpiece album.
oddly that the albums title never did spill the beans within the text of the music inside. I always felt it was regressing something so vivid within his life that it had yet to be as history for him. A feeling you find about yourself and the present future that you can’t conclude it to be anything other than coming your way.
He would though,
like the title hexes find that the tracks Dylan was on would in fact turn bloody.
Being a Dylan fan myself i was stunted and down for some time, heavily enveloped in the BIG WHY connected to it.
Is the information i found true,
well by my research and careful combing of his life in light of the subject matter,
i would sadly say yes it is.

Here it’s that Rob that was the Giant of no gentle tenor.
I’m certain GOD will remove all his intricate layers he wisely fished and fed into,
all the Dylan that made him to be BEST for himself and everyone,
until the naked man that he kept mute and unknown all his life is left before GOD.
It’s Robert whom will have to be the soul that finds the scales of justice upon him.
I wonder if what little he himself as having lived Rob be enough to make the grade?

My dad too used to sit in his chair and play "blood on the tracks" and smoke his cigar and drink a glass of wine and i always thought it annoying as well then i turned about 16 or 27 and one day his music just blindsided me!i got it and KNEW i was listening to greatness that will never be replicated! I was looked at ad a doek by my friends who were lisyening to rush and Madonna it was after all the 80s. Now years later i still find him almost other worldly in his mastery of poetry and the completeness of a story told un 5 or 6 min all the while written in rhyme. Damn thats almost a God like talent ..

@@peternash3166 His voice has accurately been described as a "cow with its head stuck in a fence". So, I agree with that part of your statement. However, his lyrics are sheer genius. I am sorry they don't resonate with you.
So many unbelievable insights. It can be as simple as a song that so many underestimate: Mr. Tambourine Man. (Not the Byrds version of course...that is sheer bubblegum.) Go camping in the desert by yourself. Look up at the diamond sky...and listen to it. It's so simple yet so transformational. Our culture constantly bombards us with meaningless distractions that try to convince us that we need to act a certain way. Look a certain way. Buy certain things that are supposed to make us happy. It's about eliminating all those meaningless distractions and just being present. Then you realize that it is true: "But for the sky, there are no fences facing".
He’s awesome. So much depth.
I am endlessly fascinated by this man and his songs.
That last bit at the end always gives me chills... how he stutters and stammers nervously to answer that final question.
When asked about how he relaxes, Dylan said: "I’m a religious person. I read the scriptures a lot, meditate and pray, light candles in church."
I believe in damnation and salvation, as well as predestination. The Five Books of Moses, Pauline Epistles, Invocation of the Saints, all of it."
Later in the interview, when asked about what style of music was his first love, he said: "Sacred music, church music, ensemble singing."

You know friend, I've seen this interview about 20 times over the years & never really noticed that. I've always thought it was a great interview, but his reaction to the question makes it even better to me now. That reaction is pure honesty. Thanks.

Bob seems a very modest man for someone of such immense fame. At least he shared his brilliant mind with the rest of us. The ability to do that is another sort of gift and yet clearly has its costs.
Imagine the responsibility that comes with being called a prophet of your generation? Imagine every word you write or utter being so hyper-analyzed. It is no wonder he rejects such talk and so seldom speaks publicly.
His Nobel Prize acceptance lecture was priceless. A real must-hear event.

Are you a fan of Bob Dylan?
If so, are you aware that both Dylan and The Beatles’ inspiration (for becoming singer-song-writers) was Buddy Holly?
Dylan mentions Buddy in his amazing Nobel Prize lecture. He said that he had to travel over a hundred miles to see Buddy Holly perform. He also noted that Buddy’s commitment to writing original songs and just going out there and playing them motivated Bob to do the same.
It was pretty much the same with The Beatles. They saw Buddy tour Britannia and were blown away by pretty much the same things as Bobby Dylan was.

We in Duluth MN were blessed by his playing his artwork in our local hippie hangout for only a short year or so. So many of us grew up with complete respect like an older cool brother.

Fascinating interview. Never heard him speak very long before. He is modest, short but at least speaks. I once saw him in concert in Seattle. He was very religious and the audience wanted him to sing the songs that made him famous. I enjoyed him anyway. The whole family has enjoyed him. I liked ed alot whenever he interviewed anyone. Rip. I loved all the periods of his life. I also saw him in Denver , he sang and even preached on stage. Tom and the group were not pleased, but hey that's Bobby!! I saw him in Philly Spectrum 70's. I was in the middle of the field in Ft Collins my last concert. I was heckling and laughing having a great time. Joan was not pleased, LOL! Joan sings like my mother Dec -Jan people! Bobby is family a long lost brother a cousin many times removed! He has been allowed a long life with wives children homes and all with tribulation. Dylan is my favorite songwriter and performer ever. But, what a fantastic interviewer Ed Bradley was. RIP. We need more like him. He wanted answers and got them without being pushy. They may have not been answered like he wanted, but he was fine with what he got. Bob Dylan had to respect him to sit down with him. Dylan doesn't do this very often. It is so interesting when he does though.

Bob Dylan is very sensible, honest and frank. He can do other things now: that’s how it is. We change, we grow: but we’re only young once.. It kills me how he’s amazed by his own writing: that’s not vanity, I hope it’s not taken that way. He’s just being honest. This interview makes me like him more. His voice is kind of pleasant, too, in its rusty sound.

Ed Bradley was well respected musician in his own right. The perfect choice to conduct this interview. He was always my favourite of the bunch. Always out-cooled every celebrity he interviewed. He was lost to soon. 🙏

I agree. Harry Reasoner's Miles Davis interview was embarrassing insofar as Reasoner was not knowledgeable about Davis' music and couldn't wait to ask him about racial issues, as if Davis' racial friction was somehow in a vacuum. Bradley would have been a better choice.

Often people do not recognize that they are hemmed in or confined, until an energy of a different sort arrives. But the heart recognizes when it is shifting inner direction .Sometimes the robins song is enough to change the outlook I have on a given day, for which I am gladdened. For instance `Please God let me be successful and I promise to build a children`s hospital`. In my own personal life the chief of command would always be The First Source and Center of the Universe, so I would answer your question on my own personal experience. When Jesus spoke, he spoke in parables, which allowed each man to take from his speech, that which found a reception in his own heart. What people take away from anything, tells more about the receiver than the giver. Or more about the listener, than the speaker. There are people on this planet who pick up from the vast undiscovered knowledge which floats through and around our earth. We often call them poets, writers, bards, or singers. Essentially they have the wonderful gift of catching, (almost as if they have a butterfly net) verses, or information. Poets write poems. Musicians set those gifts to music. Am I dragging you way off of your path? Sorry if so. I am not a concrete thinker, so I drift from one thing to another, but I do realize that many find it impossible to follow me. My apologies.
