Probably the smartest move ever made by Viserys.
If only he made it five years earlier
And it could've worked too, if only Leanor wasn't gay and couldn't muster the will to do his duty to his wife.
Actually the stupidest with this move he sealed her fate, jacaerys would never agree to give his child a last name that wasn't his own, and why would the child agree to have a different name from his father, moreover the realm would know that the line on the throne is in fact velaryon not targeryan no matter what they say or do.
Lastly the entire 7 kingdoms knew that laenor wasn't interested in women and so did viserys yet he married him to his daughter knowing that it would probably end her line
He should've married her to daemon, had he married her to daemon from the start and married laena himself the dance wouldn't have happened at all thanks to him rhaenyra met the horrifying fate she did.
@@lillypharaoh5945 you’re absolutely right, but the realm wouldn’t accept Daemon as king, especially the lords. They thought he would ruin the kingdom.
Viserys’ smartest move may have been to betroth her to Aegon while he was still young. That could strengthen Rhaenyra’s relationship (maybe) with Alicent, but it could potentially cause a fight in control for Aegon between Rhaenyra and Otto.
SO the smartest move would’ve been to either name Aegon heir and raise him the way he raised Rhaenyra, to be a proper ruler, or refused any remarriage to begin with. Many lords only accepted Rhaenyra because she was the ONLY child. That all changed as soon as Aegon was born.

Moreover I only said that viserys should've married laena because it would've fixed his relationship with the velaryons and avoided animosity between them and since we know that laena had 2 girls and passed away it wouldn't have affected rhaenyra's claim

It is but at the same time he’s basically just making up law and custom as he goes. If your going to make the first queen of the iron throne I don’t know why you’d start making arbitrary adjustments to the institution of marriage in Westeros.

Suggested by one of the best Hand of the King Harwin Strong.. this was such a good move, even if a bit late, it salvaged the tarnished relationship between the Targaryen and Velaryon

You can't fault Corlys for trying. The possibility of his family name sitting on the Iron Throne? He had to give it a shot.
I don’t think that’s what he was after. Corlys is very hung up on family names, hence why he insists Jace be named Jaecerys which is a Velaryon name, not a Targaryen one. Like later, while everyone can see that Rhaenyra’s kids are illegitimate, Corlys doesn’t really care because he sees the name as being more important than actual blood.
In the moment, I think Corlys’s chief worry was that Laenor would be the last Velaryon of Driftmark, and his family name would not continue.

The show is already taking all kinds of bullshit feminist liberties creating wild made-up “Girl Boss” plot lines like Rhaenys at the coronation popping up out of the ground (never happened in the source material) or….basically any of the females characters doing anything of substance in combat of the war outside of what Rhaenys actually did do and what happens with her but I won’t spoil that for you. No doubt, you can rest assured the show writers will force changes to include Rhaenyra, Baela, and Raena doing some kind of badass dragon fighting in the war when in reality, they mostly stayed in the same places the entire time and sat in castles…all to push a narrative and make the feminist blacks faction more appealing while smearing the “Greens” and making Aegon II who was a capable warrior and leader into some attempted version of Joffrey. It’s lame as hell and so transparent

She got pregnant later, and Aegon was born when that Lannister guy offered himself to marry Rhaenyra, which both Viserys and Rhaenyra refused. The proposal came after Rhaenyra slept with Criston Cole.

He could've disinherited Deamon or made it illegal for him to marry his daughter, plenty of Lords were scared of him being king. He could've made it clear that if he had another wife their male children would not jump the sucession, I doubt Otto would have offered his daughter had he known. He could've simply not sired children with Alicent. He could've married Rhenera to Ageon as Otto suggested. He could've arrested Criston Cole, he killed a Knight in front of everyone and dislikes Rhenera, he shouldn't spare him because of his wife, especially considering the problems he caused. He could've disinherited Rhenera's bastard children, as many did not want bastards to inherit, or he could've agreed they were bastards but legitimise them, or he could make it illegal to question their parentage. I know he did, but only after many many years of allowing rumour to fester. He could've kept Harwin the hell away from King's landing or his daughter. He could've and should've punished someone or everyone during the debacle at dragonstone, his son lost an eye, he grandchildren were called bastards, Rhenera threaten to torture his son Aemond and his wife attempted to wound or kill his grandson and daughter, what did he do? Sweet fuck all, accept finally making it illegal to question the parentage of his grandson, everyone left that feeling absolute hatred for the otherside because the king did not act. There should've been consequences, even if they're grounded in their castles. He could've taken Rheneras advice and married Rheneras kids to Alicent's kids thus uniting the sides, Alicent did not want it, but who is she to refuse the King. he should have disinherited his children with Alicent and kept them away from the capital, and not placed Otto back as hand of the King, and made sure Rhenera did not move to Dragonstone. She should have been in King's landing learning to rule on the small council.
And he should've made this alliance with the valarions years ago.
Viserys is a good man and he does make decisions, but his problem is how long it takes him to make a decision and many of his decisions are half measures or he tries to please everyone and pisses off everyone. He's too kind to be king. The dance is 100 percent his fault.

The Targaraens (Viserys, Rhaenyra & Daemon) have a pure breed Targaraen as heir. Daemon gets his son to be king. The Velaryons get to have a Velaryon (in name though) on the throne too. And u'd expect ask the other houses to keep thee peace because all the monsters ( Vhagar, Vermithor, Meleys, Ceraxes, et'al) remain with the blacks. And with Rhaenyra as Queen, u can be sure Otto gets to be booted out and eventually killed off by Daemon! Allicent would take her children to Oldtown out of fear, while Her child, Aegon & Heallena remain in Kings landing as hostages for the blacks. Daemon & Rhaenyra's first child Gets to be named Aegon and is married to His half sister Baella (who is very strong minded and regal, being under the tutelage of her grandmother, Rhaenys). Peace all

Viserys did everything in his power to ensure the Targaryen legacy. However, he never could have fully calculated the direction Daemon and Rheanyras relationship would go. Their incest basically doomed them. Their children ruled for the majority of the rest of the Targaryen reign. Until the birth defects from it finally drove the last king mad. However, their children were also the reason their Kingdom had become so strong and vast.
Ironically. If Aegon II managed the actually keep the throne and his children became the next rulers. Even if he was incompetent. The Targaryens might still be the rulers of Kings Landing
Aegon II did keep the throne he was simply offed, but he’s the one who goes down in the list of monarchs in the history of Westeros, not Rhaneyra who isn’t counted!
