Love walking small creeks for trout. Dmallest spinner in silver and gold i can find, and a pack of power worms for the ones the take bait...always fun.
I love fishing little rivers like with this with just a hook and worm. Even without a sinker, just drop it in and let it drift naturally with the current.
A lot of places like this don't allow live bait. I always check exceptions for each water body here in Oregon because odds are that live bait isn't allowed.
Good info, but I think the most important thing I learned is that I must be a trophy trout, cuz I like to find a comfy chair and stay in my feeding lane, some times for days
I can't get into the river anymore, due to balance issues, so using spincast equipment allows me to still fish and keep up with my younger brother who still fly fishes. I'm so glad I tuned into you! Thanks
One of the most effective things I’ve learned is drifting and twitching a small unweighted plastic swimbait. The 3” rage swimmer seems to work the best for me. It’s a very versatile way to catch fish.
Just went on a trip up the Lochsa River in Idaho for a few days to do just this thing. I was able to outsmart a few fish with a 6'6" Ugly Stik and a handful of Panther Martin spinners. I love fishing small creeks like this because I feel a close connection to the fish I'm chasing. Love the trout tutorials by the way guys, keep up the good work!
I'm going to put you to the test... Im 54, grew up fishing salt water in Long Island Sound... but I have never caught a trout. I've subscribed to your channel, and Im going to start watching your videos... and then Im going to try to use what I've learned to catch one... Then.. I will report back.
I'm interested to know how you do too..good luck buddy, hope you catch a mess of them! Best of luck from South Carolina, let the rest of us know how you do!
I like using a Mepps Anglia spinner, for me it is the most productive spinner on the market. Brass works best for me. I also like using a fly with a single split-shot, the smaller the better about two feet above the fly. Doesn't matter if the fly is a wet or dry. Nothing better than mountain creeks, away from crowds , the fish are aggressive and fight like crazy. Good video.
David Worthen Awesome. Another Mepps Agila fan! I use both brass and silver and tend to use #1s. Always carry 0-3 however in both colors and a few skirted. I’ve nailed decent size rainbow in fast tumbles using size 0s simply because it’s so much lighter I can cast upstream and let it stay above the rocks whereas a 2 would ride too deep and snag. I also like to use single hook models of these which are hard to find sometimes so I’ll just buy extras and switch hooks. Sure you’ll miss/lose a few fish but in the catch and release areas it’s so much easier and quicker to get them off the hook. Even trickier are the barbless hook regulation areas.
I really like your topic. Water clarity, temp, light all effect bait presentation almost identically. Trout fight differently, usually in more open water where bass run for the bottom or cover. Bass are different as they are a bit more organized coralling bait fish at certain times.
I’m so glad to have found this channel. It’s helped my wife, 8 yr old son, and I get on way more trout this summer! We just had a killer weekend on bows, cutthroat, & brooks. I like a Joe’s fly as well in this type of water bc they maintain action at almost any speed.
I have learned a lot from this channel so thankyou. I caught my first trout on a spoon in my whole life two weeks ago thanks to this channel. My preferred method for small rivers and creeks is Tenkara. I either use a dark Kebari or a elk hair caddis. I have had people laugh at my setup then watch me catch a fish 5 min later. What I like about it is the minimalism. I got tired of hauling all the tackle to the backcountry spots i like to go to. I can fit all of my kit in my pocket and the rod telescoped down to about 12 inches. Obviously I don't use this setup on larger rivers but I have been researching getting a larger tenkara rod that is designed for large rivers, it is done in japan.
Never fished for trout before, but now live in the heart of midwest Ontario where I'm surrounded by trout rivers, and really appreciate your videos. You're teaching this old dog a bunch of new tricks.
I'm dying to get out. finally got all my work wrapped up for now and off to go adventure and fish for a couple weeks. Thanks for making these videos they are really helping me refresh on technique and gear.
this guy knows his stuff! i moved on looong ago to flyfishing....but this takes me back and i caught HUGE trout on pink roostertails, spoons, and my favorite...panther martins!! this dude knows his stuff! even the clothing. i would sometime crawl on my belly to get to casting position on small creeks! biiig fish followed!!
I just got myself a tarpon 120, and I've been fishing for a month...i love the Nehalem, and all it's little tributaries, for trout. I've only landed three keepers, so far; but I've got some Perch, and lots of bullheads. This channel has made the learning curve much less steep. Thanks guys, please keep making great content.
So awesome brother, just moved back to Oregon from LA, all I want is to be on the river and show all my baseball and softball teams how fun it is to be outdoors fishing. Thanks guys I’ve learned a lot from you Jordan and Nick. My name is D.J.
I’m glad that you don’t just handpick shots where you’re catching fish making it look so easy. I love that you’re out there and sometimes aren’t getting anything.
Really appreciate all your how to videos. Helps me get back into fishing (at 58 years old), while learning new things and re-learning tricks and techniques I never knew. Thanks so much.
I always dress in camo ...and panther martins and super dupers work well for me.. I live in Evergreen Colorado and have an 18ft cataraft.....Eagle River...Colorado River...Bear Creek.. Platte....My all time favorite fishing spot.. is the Little Big Horn River.......The fish are totally wild and the colors are the most vivid ever....The trout are born in the Indian Reservation and 100% Wild and you can tell.....They fight like no other.....Love your show
Dang I looked up how to fish in Creeks and streams and I really enjoyed this! I learned alot from this vid. I've been using worms and eggs for the streams and it's been working.
Super helpful! There is this small creek near my house and I’ve never known how to fish it, thanks for the great tutorials! You’re the best fishing channel on RUclips
I've had some pretty good luck recently fishing small rivers just like you, but I'm floating a little floating 'Rebel' cricket and or bumble bee and their hitting them. And I'm brand new to trout fishing.
I’m a fly fisher and this was a great vid!! Topic/talk thoroughly done! When I was a spin caster blue fox/panther Martin for these little streams. I like the knowledge of how to pick the streams apart as well the stealth like topic. Keep these kinds of vids coming dudes!! Not always the catching as it is being out there enjoying!
Living in Boise I have found that wading in the water upstream a good distance and working the water column proves best. Mixed with some overhanging branches adds to some interesting catches. I have more success with spoons thanks to the mentorship of my buddy.
Thank you guys so much for this video. I live in Portland and these tutorials reignited my love for fishing. I mostly enjoy fishing in lakes because I have a hard time navigating Rivers without getting snagged, but I took notes and am excited to try them again.
Creeks and rivers are by far my favorite and it's always more of a thrill for me to catch them on a 4 or 5wt fly rod with one of my hand furled leaders tipped with about 3-4feet of 4lb mono and a 2 fly setup with my hand tied caddis or mayfly dries and a small hand tied nymph.
Small creek and river fishing for trout is my favorite. Its the perfect activity for hot summer days. Its all about small panther martins or little cleos. Funking love it. I go to the head waters of one of the rivers in my area every Sunday and catch tons of cutties
I love fishing trout in all the rivers around Western Washington.. Blue fox vibrax spinners, Panther Martin's & rooster tails always work really well for me, sometimes I will even throw a small piece of night crawler on the hook end of the spinner & slay the fish 👍🏼
Love small streams, and creeks.... its relaxing, a break from the the hard core terminal gear for the big boys, get away from people.... ultra light, 6lb test... 0 mepps , gold or silver.. 1/8 ounce... YES! the Thomas lure! 0 mepps,,for the real shallow stuff, Thomas to wobble down in into the deeper stuff, and more current....🎣
Thank you for the video. I am a beginner fisher and I am trying to catch trout in the Gunnison river in Colorado. I always learn something when I watch one of your videos so thank you.
Yuzuri pin and L minnow Best technique is using the current or stream swimming up,making the minnow struggling to go up,it triggers bass and trout to hit
Used to live within a half mile from a good trout stream and really got into the creek fishing on that. Personal opinion but nothing beats a hook n crawler, that being said I started building my own spinners about 3 years ago and rarely do I use crawlers anymore. 1/8oz down to 1/16oz frenchies or inlines on 4-6lb line. I've never bought braid but I'm thinking the the next time I get line for my stream rods I'll switch it up and give it a shot. You guys obviously seem to like it and I've been getting tired of re-lining every 2 months due to line memory. Great video!
Most of our creeks are off limits but the ones that are stocked during the summer we use anything from a single egg to a panther martin. Keep up the good work.
For the PNW where the trout aren't usually so picky I like a 0 - 2 wt fly rod and a size 12 or so stimulator. I fish it upstream from me to keep the drag off of the fly.
I'm learning a lot from you about trout fishing after basically abandoning it for many years in favor of deep sea fishing. I got spoiled by easy catches offshore. The last trout I caught, I accidentally snagged and he was already dying before I got him landed. Even my cats wouldn't eat him, so there was something wrong with it. I never was a very good trout fisherman, in fact most of the trout I ever caught were pretty much on accident. Catfish were more my style, but I won't eat bottom feeders anymore. So, I'm binge-watching how to catch trout.
a a naw we all have our days when nothing bites.... no shame there, the technical stuff was sound and the vid was well shot and the dude ( sorry my first video of this individual) is way cool and has great demeanour That said; blue fox and mepps spinners are my go to for stream fishing Cheers
How much for the shades ? And do they help with the color blindness? I'm color blind myself and it sucks but the best part about it is nobody wants me to do there electric work
Thanks again Jordan you really are "Trout Man"! Your tutorials are the best man. I picked up the fly rod again and carry the extra spinner pole with me as I work my way down stream
That stream is much like the ones I fish in the Sierras. That is by far my favorite type of fishing. I'll fish lakes sometimes but usually, it'll be just about like that one. I'm also a spinner guy and will usually start with a #4 PM in black/gold which it looks like what you were using. I have others of course but that's my usual go to at least for starters. This year, I am experimenting with dressed PM lures, but it's too soon to make judgements. Too much late snow and the streams are still very high and cold. Going to go downhill about 1000' in elevation this afternoon to see what happens.
I have done well with a fly and a wine cork. Just tie the wine cork about 3 feet up from the fly. The cork is not used as a strike indicator, but just gives enough weight to cast a fly and it floats too. I have found this to be a good way to fish flies without having a fly rod setup.
In Oregon for rivers like this.. I use a 7' medium/fast action spin casting rod with 6lb leader. I almost exclusively use no 2 - no 6 panther martin lure depending on the size of the trout available. If the river allows live bait I'll bring an extra float rod and nightcrawlers or red wigglers. Any water where it looks like bugs and things would be caught up and dizzy, that's where I fish. Fish, like plants, grow to their container size. Small rivers, I'll catch mostly 8" - 11" , medium - large rivers 8" - 15". and the big chunky boys are at the bottom of lakes. I typically walk a 1/4 mile mile area up and down for a half day. We can only keep 2 trout per day on a lot of rivers in Oregon(some have a limit of 5) so it's balancing what realistic sizes of trout are in the river with what to keep.
My absolute favourite type of fishing! I also have great success with a #3 or #5 brown trout pattern Rapala countdown. I almost always start with one! Great videos guys!
I've applied steelhead fishing to my trout fishing and have done really good. Also this video is awsome great Info and demonstration you guys out on. Additive videos about even more addictive fishing!!!!!! I really want to come up their and try out steelhead fishing someday I've never caught one or even hooked one. Just little river trout in creeks where I live.
Love your straight forward explanations. So much info I had to pause to take it all in. You can't catch fish every time, but I'm going to try it this weekend. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Kudos for a great video and concept. So many trout fishing videos are simply a couple of yokels casting somewhere with no explanation of where or how, what they use and why, etc. Your video is interesting and informative. I fish the small streams of the beautiful driftless area of far northeast Iowa using my own style of homemade, in-line spinner. I catch a lot of fish and have a ball. Your knowledge of small stream fishing is spot-on. Keep up the good work!
Lately I've been hooked on just drifting a night crawler on a size 4, for whatever reason my recent favorite spot thats the only thing that works to land anything bigger than 12-13 inches and it's a 14 inch min. on wild rainbows here, been catching 18-23 inchers pretty consistently on the good ole free drifting worm ... but as far as fun goes though I get why you prefer spinners :)
Great vid Jordan! Slinging iron is always fun. I also like drifting a single egg or bead and a tiny split shot a few feet behind a corky, thingamabobber or other strike indicator.
Years ago I was fishing Jim Creek near Arlington, Wa with a Colorado spinner. Couldn't get a bite. I then found a periwinkle and put in on the hook and caught a rainbow with the 1st cast. I was salmon fishing off of Meadowdale just south of Everett, during the summer when there were no runs. I was using pop gear with a McMannon spoon, to draw in a lone fish. No luck until I put a little piece of herring on the hook. Caught a nice 7lb black mouth. My conclusion is that fish can smell. Thanks for the info. Lots of great tips.
Good video. A lot of good info. I've caught more trout with my panther martins than any other lure, definitely my go to. I prefer creeks, rivers with beaver ponds 👌
I find that a light 7 foot spin-cast rod, 4 lb test, and a hook tied right to the line with a piece of redworm or night crawler with no split-shot and I limit out on holes. Food and oxygen causes them to sit below the falls and sitting in those deep holes is to keep cool in the heat of summer and avoid predators. I have caught trout in darn near trickles of water in the hottest summer months in the mountains. We have also seen the giant pacific northwest salamander to above huge waterfalls that you would not think they could get above, like Snoqualmie Falls in King County WA. Grew up fihsing in the Au Sable in Michigan for trout, and the Great Lakes for walleye and perch.
I fish a lot spots like that in Oregon. When you can use fresh bait, I love just a big worm and drop it into those holes. Most creeks don't allow fresh bait though. So, the little spinners are the best.
My most effective spinning rod n reel I ever had was all the way from the USA 🇺🇸 wallmart in arizona, my parents were on holiday and they bought me a little telescopic kit for about $40 and brought it back to the isle of man in the UK, it's action was perfect and it was only 6ft so I could get into tight corners, I caught alot of great big trout on that set up until it got stolen when camping it vanished from my tent when I was back in town getting supplies.
Jordan you’ve helped me out a lot learning how to fly fish! Thank you for the tutorials! Just wondering if have you guys ever fished in Alberta Canada?
hey Jordan. These videos are awesome. Great info. Im from walla walla but in Twin falls id now. there are some great areas here to fish. Ive been watching your setups and what to use. Im a beginner but very excited to go out and use you techniques. I appreciate the time you spend and how you make things make sense. ill be out catching me some dinner as soon as i can get some gear together. Thank you again and happy fishing.
When using light lures (1/16 oz and below usually) the stiffness and push of mono line can help you keep control of your lure in tight areas. With mono, making adjustments with the rod tip while the lure is flying through the air can help you cast into spots that most wouldn't dare. But with braid, it tends to bend and absorb the push and pull of your rod tip and makes it harder to control your lure before it hits the water. For open, non snaggy streams it doesnt make much difference but on the unmaintained tributaries, where the monsters live, it can be the difference between snagging constantly and catching a 30 inch brown. They say you can't push a rope, but you can definately push mono.
Small jerk baits work good on big trout in streams and rivers.thats what they eat each other big ones anyway works good here on north fork of the American
Great video. I may have to try the braided line. Mystery solved as to what my problem with crazy reel knots using light spinners might be. Being in the PNW, there's no shortage of streams to check out.

Creeks & river
I like both but I love running up and down rivers for trout or steelies.
Lakes are fun but there's nothing like finding wild trout in rivers and creeks.
I like lakes better
Love walking small creeks for trout. Dmallest spinner in silver and gold i can find, and a pack of power worms for the ones the take bait...always fun.
I love creeks, streams ,and rivers, the sound of the water, being out in the woods.....love it
Been putting your teqniques to the test, caught 10 trout last weekend, one of the best trips I've ever had!
I love the panther marton spinners for fishing trout in rivers

Yeah fair, always good to check before. We have plenty of rivers around here that are fly fishing only for example.
Good info, but I think the most important thing I learned is that I must be a trophy trout, cuz I like to find a comfy chair and stay in my feeding lane, some times for days
fish jump 12'03 at end of white water. after tackle a good pair of polarized glasses is a must for spotting trout and your eyes.

I never was a very good trout fisherman, in fact most of the trout I ever caught were pretty much on accident. Catfish were more my style, but I won't eat bottom feeders anymore. So, I'm binge-watching how to catch trout.
Mostly a bass guy, want to expand into trout, these vids are awesome! I have a creek near me looks just like this, cant wait to get out.
So glad I found your channel this year. I have learned a lot so far which is helping me catch some fish and have a ton of fun.
🤘🎣
kevsup1 awesome👍
Great vid but you should show yourself catching some fish as a sort of proof of concept!
With that gynormous gear he's using I wonder if he ever has hooked one...lol
a a naw we all have our days when nothing bites.... no shame there, the technical stuff was sound and the vid was well shot and the dude ( sorry my first video of this individual) is way cool and has great demeanour
That said; blue fox and mepps spinners are my go to for stream fishing
Cheers
Mike Lee I’m sure he’s hooked more than you have guy
ive been thinking the same thing in all these past tutorial videos
You sure got that right buddy.....to much talk and no enough action!! LOL Should have scouted that creek to make sure there were fish in it!! LOL
I loved this video. I am just starting fishing and I prefer creeks and streams over lakes.
How about a video on drifting nightcrawlers with split shots in fast moving current for trout I guess it would be called bottom bouncing.
That's the ticket!!!
I use different patterned tassie/Tasmanian devils and they work a treat
All the video's good!!And fun to watch!!Ive watched them all I can't wait to fish fresh water!!
Lately I've been hooked on just drifting a night crawler on a size 4, for whatever reason my recent favorite spot thats the only thing that works to land anything bigger than 12-13 inches and it's a 14 inch min. on wild rainbows here, been catching 18-23 inchers pretty consistently on the good ole free drifting worm ... but as far as fun goes though I get why you prefer spinners :)
your videos are great!! ii have fished since i was 14.. now at 65 Ive started again!! ..
My preference for streams like that is a 6'6" - 7' 3w fly rod w/a royal coachman (me being in the northeast). Or something that's hatching.
Great vid Jordan! Slinging iron is always fun. I also like drifting a single egg or bead and a tiny split shot a few feet behind a corky, thingamabobber or other strike indicator.
I'm super new to trout fishing and found these tips very informative! Thank you for sharing! Can't wait to get back out and try these tips out..
Salmon and trout use sense of smell to find their natal streams as returning adults. A salmon can smell scent at a rate of a few parts per billion.
Good video. A lot of good info. I've caught more trout with my panther martins than any other lure, definitely my go to.
I prefer creeks, rivers with beaver ponds 👌
Jordan another great video man! I dig that you are doing trout videos. It makes this channel way more versatile. Keep it up!
Worm under a bobber, or panther Martin is my favorite way Or Sandshrimp.
Very informative! Thanks for showing us how to use more than just power bait to fish for trout! :)
I just discovered your channel and I’m glad I did. You share great information and I appreciate your content. Thanks and tight lines.
Very informative!!! You’re the first person I have ever hit the notification bell for. Awesome job dude.
Jeremy Sims 🙌
Badass. I mostly fish salmon and steelhead in the Puget sound and rivers gonna try this. Looks like a kick in the pants
Small jerk baits work good on big trout in streams and rivers.thats what they eat each other big ones anyway works good here on north fork of the American
Amen!
Great video. I may have to try the braided line. Mystery solved as to what my problem with crazy reel knots using light spinners might be. Being in the PNW, there's no shortage of streams to check out.
