These a good tips. But for those folks who don’t get to go every week I feel that you need to mention preparation before the trip. I can not tell you how much time I see my buddies waste setting up rods and tiring rigs and such while I’m catching fish. All because they never looked at their tackle since they got back from the last trip. Preparation is honestly one of my biggest tips to any new angler. Great to see you all out there!!
As a new angler, i cant stress this part enough! First time i went out, took me almost an hour to get everything strung up, tied, stakes in the ground, ect. 2nd and 3rd time ive been out, had everything i could possibly have ready, just had to tie rigs onto the mainline and start fishing! Less than 15 minutes of setup time. I live in an apartment so storage space for 4 rods/reels plus all the equipment and buckets isnt easy. I have to break down everything in-between trips so it doesnt take up too much space.
Hi im from south africa. West coast.the rig with the sliding sinker is al that i use. I only use 1 or 1.0 hooks. The goast shrimp that you startet to use is all that i use. If i dont get them i use blackmussel. That grouw on the rocks. We dont get the same fish here that you get there by you but fish is fish. We get blacktail all year. And summer we get stumpnose, cob, normal mackril and if you lucky yellotail. I like your videos and never mis ons. Enjoy the week.
I totally agree with you. I myself am a small-hook angler. I usually use a size #12 Kirby classic J hook and it has catched me a lot of fish. But when I go even smaller (#14 size) I catch a lot more fish and bigger as well. So yeah, beginners make the mistake of using big hooks and they might even think the size hooks I use are tiny, but that's what all these years of experience delivers. There's several fish out there with a tiny mouth such as the pompano, bluegill and tilapia to name a few. All you need is a small hook and a small piece of bait and you're all set.
I've used #2 circles for quite awhile...caught and landed everything up to 37" reds. My rod favorite is a 10' Lews crappie jig rod cut down to 9'...30 lb braid and 20 lb flouro single hook pomp rigs that I tie myself. This rig will catch 99% of what's out there. Tight lines all!
I'm from central Mississippi. I'm a bass and crappie fisherman. I have an opportunity to go to Panama City Beach, Florida once a year. Beach fishing is my favorite thing to do there. Your videos are going help me tremendously this year. I'd do anything necessary for an opportunity to come spend one day fishing with you.
Depending on legality on your state/country, you can also change from circle hooks to j-hooks / octopus beak hooks. It makes a world of difference in hookup rates.
I definitely have caught more fish with smaller hooks. I even caught a black drum on them using only crab scented fish bites and cut squid. It was 14 inches, which in NC is a keeper size. Needless to say, I dispatched it, cleaned it and cooked it. It was absolutely delicious, sautéed with olive oil, onions, garlic, butter, dill, tarragon and a splash of white wine.
Nice, do you mind saying what size hook and how you like to cut the squid and fishbites? For a small hook is that just a small square or do you let the squid have a slight tail? Thanks
I used to think I needed something like a 5/0 hook when I first started fishing, sizing down to a 3/0 or 2/0 on a 4 ounce weight and killing it in nyc for striped bass, fluke, eel, sea robin, and so on
Bro I watch you from Lebanon 🇱🇧 thank you so much for all the helpful information you've been giving out FOR FREE, I feel like I'm robbing you every time you give helpful tips and tricks. Thanks to you I've been much more successful with my fishing and you helped me appreciate the sea and life in general and be more responsible towards its wonderful bounty. Thank you so much to you and your lovely family, your content is gold. Salute brother ❤🎣
@@HeySkipper Mostly mullets, white and saddled sea breams and red porgies. These are the most common species here in the Mediterranean, not as big as the monsters you catch in the States. Cheers brother
Hey love your videos and your energy!! I go to obx at the end of August every year and I haven’t caught anything in 4 years. I never thought about the smaller tackle. So thank you for this video and keep up the great videos!

OpNoticed the same thing switching from #2’s to #6’s in the same Owner Mutu Lights. I get a lot more hook ups BUT big fish get caught way farther inside the mouth. Sometimes in the rounds or gullet. Bought the 6s to try for minnows on crappie. They work for everything including huge fish. Your shirt is bad ass! I want one!!!!!
A tip to use a lot less bait elastic is to finish with 2 or 3 Wraps around the hook shaft to finish it off. 6 or 7 Wraps around bait then 3 around shaft will keep it tight around the bait without tearing it but also really secure around and easy to snap the elastic. Nice vids
The football sinker with the single hook is called the "fish finder" rig and it is what carp fishermen rely on . Glad it works for the beach as well, as well as any fresh water fish as walleye, carp of course, and perch inland.
In south africa we call it either a baber/catfish rig(freshwater) or a cracker/muscle cracker rig(saltwater) its my go to when at the ocean,i use it for grey grunters using size 4 and blacktail(pin fish) using size 8 and smaller hooks, if you use it around rocks, i use a torpedo weight, that 1 that looks like 2 bullet sinkers back to front
You are right. Philippines needs regulation regarding catching fish. I am a newbie at fishing and can only fish during weekend, catching a fish here is a struggle. I usually go to ports and still really out of luck :D
Hey skipper you should be using a long shank bait keeper hook because u want ur ghost shrimp to be live when you throw it out in to the surf ,the way ur doing it is ok but u want ur shrimp to look natural and be alive
I’ve only ever fished salt water from a Pier. Just ordered a 9ft Penn battle 3 pool to try shore and jetty fishing. Super excited to learn how to set up my pole n catch fish this way. Checking out ur site n the rigs u offer to what would u recommend for a someone new to this style of fishing to help kickstart my adventure
Wanted to say Brandon is super busy and this video is almost a year old. Don't get disappointed if he doesn't reply. The best thing to do is search his videos. I can all but guarantee he covered what you want to know already. Good luck, tight lines!
Loved this video. This is the first time I've seen a US fishing video that looks so similar to a UK fishing video! Except that you guys actually have fish on your shores except us lol
Those whiting are huge compared to the southern Gulf of Alabama. I would love to fish there but, wife enjoys the powdery soft beaches that are hard to pull a cart in, ( even balloon tires) . Seems the ghost shrimp holes are easier to get to there also. Great video.
Previously i use heavy set all the way because im not go for small fish. But i changed to light set this year. everything rated below 20lb. Rod reel line Accessories. And its really more fun more challenging and more fish.
Great info bro subscriber here. I'm going to try this we went out on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday on Mana Peak pier and was using 7/0 circle hooks with big bunker bait didn't even get a bite really disappointing I'm definitely going to scale down this was very helpful thanks a lot for posting this never ive never had a day like you guys had there on the beach
Hi guy I’m newbie’s ,i have some experience on river only .have try 2-3 on beach but can’t catch any fish @,,,@ Using bait shrimp- prawn -chicken…. Use sinker big sinker and same hook…
Oh good test that day when you were fishing would’ve been half of your rods with your normal hooks that you use and then the smaller number to hooks you might’ve just hit a very good day when everything was biting but this was a very good tip to be aware of to downsize your equipment sometimes
It's a fine balance between trying to catch everything versus knowing what fish you're targeting, and the hook size to use given the size of fish you want to catch. Too small and the problem of gut hooking arises. I'd rather lose a bit of bait and catch the size and type of fish I want than trying to get it all. Win some lose some.
Catching big fish or any fish for that matter especially in the surf its not so much the size of your terminal tackle as it is the quality of your drag and the experience of the fisherman using it. I have caught little whiteing on a number 1 circle hook and turnned around and caught 40 pound red drum on that same hook. The only fish that gives me hook troubles is sharks and sometimes big rays. The sharks will braraid the hook and it can break and the rays break hooks no matter the size i think i have broken and stretched more hooks on rays than anything else.
I have a question. It's been few months since I started fishing and on my fishing rod (casting weight 100/200) is written and I want to know what does that mean?
I'll be definitely using this method of smaller hooks, I just started my fishing adventures and I've been using size 2 hooks all I've been getting is bites, watching from Jamaica thank you for these amazing tips @heyskipper

That's right I always get questioned why I use a smaller hook u think when I double the catch of my fish to there fish they would learn but nope
You are so entertaining, and I can feel the excitement even when I am on my couch watching. Bravo!
I love your work, it makes me more confident as a beginer.

I can definitely agree with this. I’ve always used #6 and #2 hooks for a lot of different species.
You have to match your hook to your bait…
200 pound bluefin tuna are often caught using live sardines with #6/#8 live bait hooks 🍻

Thank you for your video and reminder. I used to go to smaller hooks when the fishing was slow then I stopped.
Yea it works well!
Digging the content. Would be nice if you mentioned where your fishing. At least a ballpark area. Thanks.
"LET 'EM GO, LET 'EM GROW"

Isn’t the main difference that the fish Finder normally uses a pyramid sinker to stay in place?
