This is one of the best videos I've seen, demonstrating how to tie a paternoster rig. Doing it on the black cloth with white coloured line clearly outlines how to tie the rig.
This is a great video, in shallower water with rocky or reefy bottom lately I've been using this but without the bottom knot, I've been putting a decent sized bean sinker and tying a double overhand knot to keep the bean sinker on. If the sinker snags, I can give it a decent pull and the double granny will pull through the hole in the bean sinker. Tight lines everyone 🤘🏼
@@pauloakley8424 Yes but the granny knot PLUS passing it over the hook is a Palomar knot. Been using it for 40 years, because its easy to tie in the dark, in wind etc and maintains 97% of the original breaking strain of the line.
Thank you my adhd brain couldn’t comprehend the visual of other dropper loops on RUclips, yours was the best visual and actually understood the whole process. 🙏thank you!
this is a really great video. i appreciate the extreme close up when demonstrating the process. it makes it a lot easier to follow and eliminates confusion. i will be saving this video for reference for sure. thank you for sharing.
Sooo Happy I found your video. I've been trying to learn how to do a high/low rig for hours through other videos. Yours made it so simple and so easy to follow! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I'm going fishing tomorrow in the Pacific. Hopefully put the knots to the test!
Excellent demonstration. And actually someone discussing the method to tie it up. Now I need to find someone who will explain the 'T' knot rig. I'm trying to expand my understanding of the different types of dropper rig knots. I fresh water fish and am looking for new ways.
Thanks for the video. Ive lost some big reef fish when the line breaks at the hook when just looping the hook on with 80lb mono. I was leaning towards a 3 way swivel but will try your rig.
It isn't an alpine butterfly it's a dropper loop knot but you could use an alpine butterfly knot for this purpose probably, but you were spot on about the hook knot being a palomor Edited to include a link to a easy way to do the alpine butterfly: ruclips.net/video/Qc89VZ9JkN0/видео.htmlsi=7lfSGgJNzocX7PNc
Tying this drop loop can be so aggravating! Sometimes its cake easy, othertimes you couldnt tie it if life depended. I cannot figure why or what I do differently. One side just "slips" and pulls out.
So many things in life, such as tying knots, seem difficult with two hands, but could be pretty easy with three hands. Makes me wonder why we evolved with only two when a third-especially a center hand-would be so useful.
If im using a 40lb braid will a 15lb be too light for a break away on snags? Ive never considered that before but it sounds like a good idea. Maybe 7 or 8 inches of a 15lb mono just snap if it snags?
That's awesome. I wish I had of seen this a few days ago before i went fishing (I'm still learning). When you tie the granny knot on the hook does that mean you can't change hooks?
Dont know why but at least have the time the knot slips and the loop disappears leaving me with just crinkled leader. Very frustrating. What could i be doing wrong? When i hold the loop in my teeth and pull the ends the loop just shrinks and disappears under tension
Noice man I do drop shot mostly I’ve been eyeballing this rig imma try it just need a strong snap swivel for big cats to not break it but I hate it when it tangled on fish and nets I use punch baits cj shad is bdass and triple sss stinkbait is king too I stick to those I really don’t use my more cut up bait fish are stubborn here
I prefer to tie the dropper loop first, and then the weight loop. I find it easier to get the weight close to the hook, if I really want that bait on the bottom.
It can also come untied and send your 4oz Weight sailing into oblivion, leaving your line behind. Use a double surgeons loop, and tie a simple square not just above it. The square knot is the weakest link in the rig, and the line will break there.
Hi mate. Yes I do mate. If i have plenty of leader and in a rush I will just tie the knot in my leader but generally I will attach with a swivel. Cheers
does anyone know if the knot he tied to join the sink break away to the main line at 1:25 was a quick way to do a Double Uni knot? Or was it some other knot?
Hi Greg, just been practicing this for next time I get out. Question ? I’m doing the overhand knot on the dropper with some 7/0 octopus beak hooks aka suicide hook with the bent hook shank ! Does this same overhand knot thing work with these hooks ? Or should I stick to a straight shank hook ? It does sit slightly funny would it effect it or will be ok or what’s best ? I noticed your circles had bent shanks …
Hey Greg, I was wondering if you had a depth that you switch from circle hooks instead of j hooks? (Assuming you are running braid mainline to your rig) I wonder about this myself and wanted to see what you reckon :)
This is one of the best videos I've seen, demonstrating how to tie a paternoster rig. Doing it on the black cloth with white coloured line clearly outlines how to tie the rig.
Easily the best demonstration of tying these dropper loops there is period !

Thanks for that Greg. The granny knot at the hook is a great idea.
That was a Palomar knot not a granny knot .
@@robertlosasso4222 Greg literally said granny knot at the hook
@@pauloakley8424 Yes but the granny knot PLUS passing it over the hook is a Palomar knot. Been using it for 40 years, because its easy to tie in the dark, in wind etc and maintains 97% of the original breaking strain of the line.
That knot is called that Palomar knot.
the granny knot after going through the hook eye is Sweet!
Hard to believe but I ain't seen that trick before. Thanks
That's the same as the palomar knot one of the strongest knots.
Well done! Love the knots and simple but detailed commentary.

thank you I'm glad you found it useful. Much appreciated and thanks for the support.
Can relate to what you are saying. Seen many demonstrate the tying of a paternoster rig. But some are hard to follow. This one is very user friendly
For me those video is now the best tutorial for the paternoster rig by some way. Clear and simply technique thank you

a natural instructor you are, looking forward to more videos.
Great easy to follow vid. I simply drill out the holes of the sinkers allowing the knot to pass through and thus a shorter loop. Steve 🇦🇺
Cheers mate. No doubt it will minimise it mate.
Yea drilling every sinker is way easier than making a loop slightly larger
Nice Palomar on the end of the loop knot. Good idea!

4:30 - a single loop palomar essentially. I've been looping through but will definitely be doing this from now on.
Excellent demonstration. And actually someone discussing the method to tie it up. Now I need to find someone who will explain the 'T' knot rig. I'm trying to expand my understanding of the different types of dropper rig knots.
I fresh water fish and am looking for new ways.
One of my most often used knots, it's what I use for catfishing. I find it a lot of fun to tie as well.
This is the best video! Great clear instructions and visual aids! You are very talented teacher!
Great video! Very clearly explained. Well done and thank you!
Good on ya mate. Thank you for the great information. Using the thicker line made it really easy to follow along.
grear explanation thank you very much from saudia arabia
thank you
Pretty good rig for shore fishing when attaching a gripper weight for the sand!
Good video mate 👍
Thanks for the video. Ive lost some big reef fish when the line breaks at the hook when just looping the hook on with 80lb mono. I was leaning towards a 3 way swivel but will try your rig.
Very informative thanks. The hook position is much better if you use a loop, put in from the front, especially with recurve/circle hooks
This is my go-to line. I use 15 lb. Test and night fish a lot and when you pair this line with a blacklight, you have no problem seeing your line.
Hi Greg Great explanation , thank you very much
Thanks for the comment. Cheers
You just gave me a great idea with the dropper loop knot on the hook
AWESOME VIDEO, THANKS FOR SHARING. TIGHT LINES, MATE!
Thanks mate much appreciated.
Thanks for the vid!
Didn't realize one alpine butterfly (w/extra twists) and one Palomar knot was all it consists of, I was overthinking the process.
Thanks mate glad you liked it. Cheers

Thanks man! Simplest and most effective rig to make! Praise man!
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks for a well explained video !
Great vid, best on RUclips for this type of rig. Thanks a lot!
awesome thank you for the feedback
Quite impressive! Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Very good information ! simple and easy to understand. thanks a lot.😊
Great Video. Thanks Mate from USA
Thank you much appreciated.
Great video Greg, will be using these tips next time Im live baiting for fingermark, thanks mate.
Thanks mate I'm glad you found it useful. Cheers
Great vid!!! I just tied 6 and it was super easy.
Awesome mate well done
Love that knot for tying drop shot rigs!
Nice video - I've been tying this rig for crappie jigs since I was a little kid when my dad taught me and I've never known the name of the rig
the best explanation. Great Tutorial
stopped by this channel because I wanted to learn how to connect fishing line
always success bro Nice to meet you

Superb demonstration - thanks.
Great balls of heifer dust, I,m still working on a double uni.
Thanks bro you made that super simple 🎣😎

Haha I’m the same. Just do 3 overhand knots. I’ve landed 8kg snapper with that knot. Maybe not as good with even bigger fish
@@dragginmedown There gotta be something I am missing tying it. I like it but your right smaller stuff. Frustrates the bejebus outta me at times!!

great work Greg. tight lines mate.

Thanks Greg, learnt something today.

A simple single overhand knot for the sinker is all you need , it will pull out if your sinker gets hung up .
It can also come untied and send your 4oz Weight sailing into oblivion, leaving your line behind. Use a double surgeons loop, and tie a simple square not just above it. The square knot is the weakest link in the rig, and the line will break there.
@@WD-41469 I’m not talking about casting, just dropping down and drifting, it won’t come undone .
@@robertlosasso4222 Ah. That makes sense. I’m not a boat guy.
Noo, do two wraps on your overhand for your sinker, it won’t ever fly off but it’s weak enough to break off before your teaser/hook
Thanks for the help Bro
Hi Greg, do you use a swivel to connect the paternoster to the main line or just tie the paternoster in the main line , cheers

I've used it on all hooks and even ones with bent shank. Just make sure you try to help it slip down nicely onto the eye as your pulling it tight.
Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks For the Info Friend.
Please can you tell us the Lengths in Cms?
Cheers Mate..
The gaps between the knots made me lose my weight quickly. I'd probably just tie on the weight a different way. How the hook is tied on was fine
Is this for saltwater fishing? Or is it gonna work also for walleye and whitebass fishing?
Thanks
very cool, I prefer to use a figure 8 on a bite knot personally
Good pédagogie !!!
Thank you
what test is that line at 5:31?
Is that dyneema on the first rig? How would you attach that to the main line?
With a swivel or I'd you ate casting lures a pr knot
correct and yes use a swivel between the paternoster rig and main line
Can you cut the loop for rigs intended for smaller fish and feathers?
