How To Tie The Dropper Rig (Fast & Easy Way)

  • In this video, I’m going to show you how to tie a dropper rig so you can catch more sheepshead and mangrove snapper (plus a ton of other species).
    One of the best ways to catch these fish is by fishing with live bait, like shrimp or fiddler crabs, on the bottom, and one of my favorite ways to rig them is with a dropper rig.
    However, many people tie this rig the wrong way, which leads to them getting easily broken off by big fish.
    Watch the video below to see step-by-step instructions on how to tie this rig the quick and easy way.

    Why do you cut the hook line , why not attach the hook to the loop

  • @piotrtrocki3842
    @piotrtrocki3842 2 года назад +4

    2:37 when you are cutting one of the lines of the loop, you don't know which one is part of the main line and which one is part of the end with the weight, so if you cut a wrong line your hook will not be attached to the main line.

    why at 2:25 did you cut the loop u just formed? could u not attach the hook to the loop the same way u did the weight? that way u could swap out the hook if u wanted to also.
    I'm asking because I will be setting up my own rig for the 1st time this weekend. so I have no experience and just want to make sure I understand. great video btw✌

    • @muhameddedic1008
      @muhameddedic1008 4 года назад

      In his high-low rig tutorial, he did the same. It's just his preference, people do it both ways. I think that by tying the hook it's more stable, since the loop on the weight is used because you can change it easily.

    • @1973Saved
      @1973Saved 4 года назад +1

      I agree with Muhamed in that I find it more important to use a loop for the sinker because when fishing from a boat or kayak I'm frequently fishing different depths, & even if I'm fishing the same depth, as the tide changes the current speed changes, so I need to change the weights accordingly to keep it in the strike zone.
      In my opinion, a loop is good only with a bent eye hook, because If I use a loop with a straight eye hook it (the hook) hangs at an odd angle.
      A cut loop will work with either a straight eye hook or a bent eye hook,
      I sometimes end up cutting the loop for a bent eye hook because the doubled up leader won't fit through the eye.
      A tip to save time, frustration etc. is if you make a dropper loop for your bent eye hook, make sure it is long enough so that if you do need to cut it, there is enough line to tie whatever knot you use to attach the hook, I've ruined many rigs learning that lesson ; )

    Great video, finally someone broke it down simply. How would I incorporate a snap swivel on the sinker using this method? In what instance would I even need a snap swivel. Thank you sir.

    • @TeMeister
      @TeMeister 3 года назад +2

      For a snap swivel just tie the leader onto the swivel and clip the weight (sinker) onto the snap swivel. I wouldn't use a snap swivel because even just on small trout I've had the swivel slip and unclip itself mid fight. A snap swivel is good just for quick changes whether it's a sinker to a lure, or a lure to a sinker. Don't use snap swivels to attach directly to a hook.

    cant I use a loop at all 3 ends so hooks/sinkers can be changed also use loop to loop or swivel to loop at main line end. then I can have several different length/test line rigs made up in advance and keep them in a CD pouch rolled in loops and just put sinkers/hooks on when using? I intend to do this with 20lbs or more Mono for my Catfish rod/reel with up to 100lbs test braid so braid dont get chewed up. also same thing with say 10lbs test for pan fish etc with lighter test line (under 17lbs test) on dropper loops and plain leaders with loop on each end for fast change outs to save time while fishing, like how I do with ultra-lite rigs and snelled hooks on snap swivels or lures. also saves line on reel longer using lighter test leaders like a fuse limit the way some river bank bottom fishermen use paper clip for sinker so rock snags dont break line and loose fish only sinker when paperclip straightens out. as line dont have to support total weight of fish out of water. you can land an 80lbs catfish with heavy net or Armstrong on less than 20lbs capacity outfit

    • @N2RI1
      @N2RI1 2 года назад

      this wont work on lite fly fishing or under 4lbs test gear as hooks etc are too tiny of hole to double any line and push through. but if loop is left large enough say 1.5" dia it can be used on most lures also long as swivel is used on main line end towards rod/reel to prevent twist messing up line on spool or lure function

    You made it about as easy as Mehlhorn made it, but you were a bit more thorough in your loops. Granted he was showing 3 different techniques.
    Only thing I didn’t do to my hook loop was cut it. I’d like to be able to swap my hook, long as it doesn’t get snagged, from worm, to circle, to treble, to spring hook, etc. nice tutorial!

    Thank you for the video. You mentioned it’s about 1.5 -2 feet long loop but I have a few other questions.
    what’s the distance from last hook to the sinker?
    What’s the distance between the two hooks?
    What’s the distance from the leader connection to the first hooks?
    What’s the distance of the hook from the main leader knot?
    Thank you

    great vdo the only issue is that for the ppl who dont know anything about fishing knots to please explain the knot you tied to the hook..so they wouldn't have to look at another vdo on how to tie the hook knots.

    surgeons loop knot. i use this to dropshot all my largemouth on 6-8lb line max like 2 foot up usually more around 1 foot from weight though.. usually ill just do my loops smaller like a couple inches just to give the bait more movement then all the guys doing regular dropshot. and to keep it off the bottom where the snags are. whats nice about it also.. if you tie the weight with a weaker knot a lot of snags you can lose your weight and not hook.. though i would say its 50/50 from the banks because you are dragging uphill more then a boat. but ya in ocean if you rockfish.. do a couple hooks like this 2 foot off bottom one 4 foot off bottom.. you can get some sick double ups etc.. also it makes changing weights and hooks easy.. but on lighter line you sometimes lose that with the weights since the line is so small. i like this because its easier then a real dropper loop to tie and i just do three times around for my hook and 2 for weights. i don't cut it with scissor though.. whats nice about the surgeon loop knot you can tie it anywhere on the line.. and its strong.. i havent lost a fish from my rig breaking for a very long time with just using the hooks the same way you do the weight.. knock on wood.

    I am a novice at fishing and this method is the quickest I've seen on RUclips. The way you attached the hook was impressive. I use pre snelled hooks and sometimes the knot I use slips. Your way eliminates this problem. Thanks for sharing this information.
