The Kentucky and Carolina rig by far are my favorite rigs and I catch the most catfish on them out of any other rig, the Carolina is better for lakes and ponds and the Kentucky is better for rivers.
Good video, i have never heard this called a kentucky rig till now, very common rig for pier fishing as well. Tip: tie another tiny figure eight on the end of your weight loop, makes it a zillion times easier to pull open. If you use light line
What is the advantage of the Kentucky rig compared to Carolina Rig? Would this rig be effective if I use non-live bait? Also I'm using an octopus circle hook, would that be a problem using the rig?
I do a similar thing but the difference is when I make the loops instead of putting the hook or weight directly on the loop I use a snap swivel on both. this way I can use any weight that can be used on a sinker slider and it also makes changing out the weights and hooks a lot easier. you just snap it open put the hook on one snap swivel snap the other snap swivel open and then just put the weight on and snap both closed.
I learned this rig as the “dropper loop” rig and the person who I learned from said this was a rig to catch less catfish and more of everything else in the lake.
I know it's an old video but hope you get this. The dropper loop can be cut so it's a longer hook length and can be tied directly to a hook. This also stops the loop being pulled smaller when dealing with a heavy fish.
What's is the difference between this qnd the carolina rig? I would try this just to do it but before I make myself learn it, I'd like to know why someone wouldn't just use a Carolina rig. Thanks.
Serious pressure will snap that loop from the hook like that. Ive done it. Solution is to put the loop through the eye and Cris Cris it open the loop and around the hook (polymer) now it won't break.
Yep but with the loop knot to a polymer last garfish I caught 40 lb test 6 ft 6 inches 100 lbs plus. Knot is the weakest point and I've got two. Two pieces to the polymer provide 2X the stretch "shock leader" effect. Hook has two strands holding it to the hook. Believe me. Tough as nails.
That is an awful lot of faith to be putting into a Larks Head (Cow's Hitch) knot for the hooks eye. Using it for the weight, eh, no biggie there (though it would be advisable to utilize a smaller gauge line for the weight line, in case of weight snagging).
It's a simple knot. Among the easiest. The ony thing you got right of what you've said is it works. The fishing line wasn't blue, it was green and it is Trilene, not Seaguar
@@pooppoop1818 omggg I remember I was going to put how I did but then I thought ohh no one cares so I didn’t do it lol. But caught a few 7-8 pounders and a 13
A dropshot rig has two hooks and is mostly used for saltwater and a Kentucky rig only has one hook and is mostly used for freshwater that's the difference.
I use this rig when I catfish but how to I keep my dropper loop from closing up after I catch the first fish? Never fails I always lose that bit of extra line
i use light line 6lb and under, so i just use surgeons loop knots for both. but yes this is good for bass fishing with smaller hooks and fake plastics for drop shot style also. its really good for rock fishing ocean though because you can tie multiple hooks on and get double ups on one line and fish low and 4-5 foot off bottom or more at same time.
with thick line not really the loops stick out on their own. light line it can but also not really unless you do super long loops. just keep them shorter on lighter line. this set up is good with surgeons knots also for lighter line over dropper loop. like 6lb and under. but also this set up is nice for fishing ocean bottoms because you can do several loops at different intervals up the line and fish the bottom and x amount of feet above bottom at same time. i think dropper loop is probably better also on thicker line.
I use Kentucky rig almost exclusively in the lake I fish. The only time I've ever had one get tangled was using a small live bait. Though a lot of anglers, this guy included, promote the use of a barrel swivel to "...prevent line twist..." I have the opposite effect. Every time I use a swivel, I get line twist. So, there are no swivels in my tackle bag.
Not a whole lot, but generally with a drop shot you tie the hook so it is always pointing straight out, while this rig has a short section of line to give the fish room to eat the bait.
@@FishingExplained Forgive me. I wrote that as I struggled with it. As one gets older you lose the dexterity to use your hands. Turning and twisting, then back feeding it can get confusing. I'm sure it is as you say. Thank you, I enjoy your fishing knot video's.
I respect that. It is "simple" by design but I can see the knots can being a pain to tie if if you haven't done it a thousand times. Thanks for watching and happy fishing!
I mean it was a little fast but wasn’t hard to pick up on, maybe because this is just a normal bottom rig that I’ve been using for several years and didn’t realize it’s called “Kentucky rig”

If you like this rig, then you will LOVE my santee cooper rig tutorial! ruclips.net/video/EEXmIYFDQXM/видео.html
I found this rigging useful for catfishing and also surf fishing for perch on the ocean. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you sooooo much for this easy method
Best explained fishing rig that works!!! Thank you, I can't wait to try. And I have already tied up my poles!
Nice simple tutorial, I do wish this video included a little tidbit about how to use this rig though
How to use this rig? Lol. You bait the hook, cast it out to a good spot and wait for a bite. Simple. Catches the fish if they're in.
One of the best fishing lessons on RUclips.
The Kentucky and Carolina rig by far are my favorite rigs and I catch the most catfish on them out of any other rig, the Carolina is better for lakes and ponds and the Kentucky is better for rivers.
AMAZING.... Best all in one loop set I've ever seen, for your Sinker, your Hook and the Swivel. I subscribed!

THE VID I WATCHED SO MANY VIDS BUT I DID MY FIRST RIG IN YOUR TUTORIAL THANK YOUU 😁😁😁
Wow that’s awesome plain and simple great video Going to practice this set up.
Nice rig, thanks.
This is what I've been looking for to set up a bank fishing rig.
Thanks for the video. I found it to be very helpful and I'm going to be using those knots all the time.
Nice rig
Thank you!

Thanks for this. Easy!
Thanks this really helped me how to set it up
Thanks for the video
Yer name? haha.
Man that's slick! Best demonstration & explanation of knot tying that I've seen. And I've watched a whole lot of them!🙂👍
I do a similar thing but the difference is when I make the loops instead of putting the hook or weight directly on the loop I use a snap swivel on both. this way I can use any weight that can be used on a sinker slider and it also makes changing out the weights and hooks a lot easier. you just snap it open put the hook on one snap swivel snap the other snap swivel open and then just put the weight on and snap both closed.
It's just as easy to do what this guy did. I think more accessory on the line makes the fish more likely to avoid biting.
So basically the same thing as a Pompano rig? That setup x2 or x3 hooks works great as a multi species setup.
very helpful
thank you man
Great video. Trying that next weekend
Interesting name
Thanks for the content❤ since the circle hook isn’t snealed, how does it impact hook up rate?
Snelled will always be better, but it's still pretty effective without doing so.
Cool! This is the set up I was looking for thanks!
Thank You!!!😃👍
I learned this rig as the “dropper loop” rig and the person who I learned from said this was a rig to catch less catfish and more of everything else in the lake.
It's a good rig you can tie up quickly in a pinch, but it definitely not very snag or tangle resistant.
I use 65 pound breaded line for river fishing
I'll have to watch this a hundred times to figure out those knots
Bummer
Same
I know it's an old video but hope you get this.
The dropper loop can be cut so it's a longer hook length and can be tied directly to a hook.
This also stops the loop being pulled smaller when dealing with a heavy fish.
This reminds me of a modified 3 way rig. Is there a difference in efficiency?
Thanks
I use 50lbs big game mano leader same green color
Can't go wrong with big game mono.
whats a good size of way swivel , hooks , weight and bead man for a carolina rig for cat fish ?
Thank you

I would try this just to do it but before I make myself learn it, I'd like to know why someone wouldn't just use a Carolina rig.

I have another video on the Carolina rig called "best Catfish rig"
Wait I’m new but do you use 2 different lines to do it ? Like only the 30 pound line for the rig or for the whole thing
Generally you tie the rig, attach it to a barrel swivel, then tie that swivel to the line on your rod.
I feel like a small float right below the swivel would help suspend the bait off of the bottom
I do that rig a little different but it's so much better than the Santee rig
Serious pressure will snap that loop from the hook like that. Ive done it. Solution is to put the loop through the eye and Cris Cris it open the loop and around the hook (polymer) now it won't break.
With any knot you do indeed run the risk of creating a weak point
Yep but with the loop knot to a polymer last garfish I caught 40 lb test 6 ft 6 inches 100 lbs plus. Knot is the weakest point and I've got two. Two pieces to the polymer provide 2X the stretch "shock leader" effect. Hook has two strands holding it to the hook. Believe me. Tough as nails.
Can you use a circle 8 knot for the hook leader? Does it make a difference?
I guess you could, but I think the dropper loop is superior for helping hold the hook outwards from the leader.
I'm so lost, how did you get your side cutters to turn into needle nose pliers
LOL !
Is the point of the dropper loop to suspend your bait in the water?
Yes.
Muchas gracias
That is an awful lot of faith to be putting into a Larks Head (Cow's Hitch) knot for the hooks eye. Using it for the weight, eh, no biggie there (though it would be advisable to utilize a smaller gauge line for the weight line, in case of weight snagging).
Can I use shrimp on this rig
It's usually used when boat fishing with chunk bait, but as long as you size the hook properly i don't see why you couldn't use shrimp.
why you put in a swivel what it use for? i can just use the main line for that
Son Tran it will eliminate your line twisting on your reel. Also a quick change out if you pre rig some
Does it not need a floater for cat fishing
This is the seaguar blue that we know and love. Yes, it is difficult to knot, but it works.

could I get away with a 7/O Gamakatsu Octopus circle hook?
Those will work fine unless you are targeting fish 25+lb
I call this a dropshot. Never knew it was a Kentucky rig
You need to use more loops when tying, I was having the same problem.
Why not use a eagle claw catfish rig?
What do you typically use for main line?
I always use the lightest line possible. For cats 20lb and under I always use 15lb test.

Is that braid line?
No, 30lb mono.

Awesome video I would tie all that and get it caught in a tree
Why did he go from cutter's to pliers
seems like a more complicated drop shot
Opo
all i see is a big snag with all them double lines.
Them a lot of knots less knots less chance of loosing fish
Nice video but that dropper loop is a terrable knot. Breaks almost instantly. I don't trust it.
Looks a bit complicated to me
And then you attach the Kentucky rig how? Not very explanatory for a beginner.
Tie any fishing knot from swivel to mainline as shown in the end of the video.
Drop shot
-next time get rid of excess line
Nah. Your way overcomplicating this rig.

“Simple “ really that’s far from simple
1 length of mono, 3 knots and a swivel. Quite simple in most angler's books.
