I learned this knot almost 50 years ago, and it's the only one I have used since. This knot will hold so well, you can trim the tag end right up against the knot, and it won't unravel.
Thank You. My father taught me fishing knots at a young age and I am just getting back into the fishing scene. This is one knot he never taught me and I cant wait to give it a try.
That's awesome, I'm so glad to hear it. My dad got me into fishing when I was little too, and I learned so much from him. Hopefully this knot helps you out, and thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it!
My dad passed away on March 11th 2024 after a sudden cardiac arrest. I'm his only daughter and just turned 19, we used to go fishing every year on my birthday and I really miss it. There are a lot of skills of his that I didn't get to learn, tying a fishing hook is one of them. Thank you for this video, now I'll be able to keep me and my dad's fishing tradition alive hopefully 😊🙏🏽

The thing I like about this type of video is that the person tying the knot is actually telling you what they are doing. When they don't provide commentary, I sometimes find it is hard to follow what is happening as their fingers and hands are getting in the way.
I learned knots in Ranger School in 88, and I still use several of them. We "dress down" the knot to tighten it, by pulling each part out a little, alternating as you hold the knot. I think you could have less risk of straining your line or your tendons if you used your fingers to slide the wraps into place instead of pure tension. I like your knot, and the wetting is a new trick to me, so thank you.
Brilliant step by step tutorial with clear verbal and visual instructions on how to tie the Uni Knot. Have just tried it out and it was perfect first go.
Thanks! That knot was amazing and I already got 3 pikes and the knot seems to be really strong. My dad has always done my knots but now at the age of 20 it was time to learn to do these by myself, so thanks a lot!
I use this knot for most connections. Vic Dunaways book taught me many ways to employ it, and along with about 2 others, I have never found a situation that wasn't able to be resolved. Thank you Mr.Dunaway
I've been using this knot for 50 years. It's fantastic. I don't hold it the same way he shows, but I can tie it in less than 30 seconds. And he is right, it is great for tying 2 lines together.
I must admit, I have viewed several versions on how to tie this knot. However this is the most straightforward and well explained video I have viewed. Thank you for sharing this.. 👍
I got tired of loosing expensive lures and big fish using the Palomar so I started using the uni. Best knot ever! I haven't broke off once since. Plus I can tie it in the dark/blind.
Really? I've always used the Palomar. This one seems you have to stretch the line more to get the knot to fully seat. Figured it'd be bad on the line, and it only has one loop onto the lure. Hmm.. I may try it. It def looks faster
@@cloutmaster965 yes, with fluorocarbon . . . with , fluorocarbon, ( _100.7% efficient_ ) monofilament ( _115.8% efficient_ ), and braided ( _124% efficient_ ) lines alike. And with any other commercial fishing line. There are over a dozen knots that have an above 100% efficiency rating for knot strength available for any fisherman to use. And several are much easier an faster to tie than the "Uni_ knot. FACTS: Palomar average efficiency rating = 113.5% / Uni knot average efficiency rating = 112.8%. Additionally, when you cinch it down, do not go all the way to the eye, stop about a 1/4" from the eye, hook the hook around something stationary, grab the tag end with your fishing pliers and chinch that tight. Now you have a solid knot with some play between the eye and the line, a good technique for fishing with live bait, gives it a little more flexibility and action. This video just upped my fishing game!!! WOW. Thank you so much! I really look forward to going out on the water again with my son and teaching him this ❤️
Then it is no longer a "Uni knot". You are describing the " Fish 'n' Fool Knot". That is the second strongest knot you could use. The Uni sits at about the 9th, one step below the Palomar which sits at 8th.
I used the old reliable fisherman's knot for the first 30 yrs of my life but when I discovered the uni-knot I immediately switched. It's easier and quicker and by all accounts stronger.
Although the fisherman’s knot is still a good one and I use it on occasion as well, I agree on all counts! This is a very strong and fast knot! 🤙 thanks for the comment and for watching!
Wow. Just tried this out today, I'll never go back to the clinch. This was SO much easier and feels far more reliable. Clinch always comes undone for me on my test pulls, maddening. Thank you for the knowledge!
Absolutely! So glad you found this helpful! The cinch is a good knot in its own right, but you may find this is a little stronger/more reliable! Let me know what you think after some use!
The day I lost a bass of a lifetime was the last time I ever used a cinch knot and the day I learned the uni. I get pissed off just thinking about a freaking cinch knot!
Thanks! I have a hard time tying fishing line now because my close vision is getting bad. I have to wear reading glasses and still have a hard time. I'm not giving up! I will keep trying and preparing my rods before every fishing trip. 🎣
You can do it! My dad has the same issue but with some patience, he can tie pretty much everything I can and to the same strength as well. I hope the video helped, and thanks for commenting!

Awesome, I will check theirs out! Yeah mine in this video was definitely at the end of its life, I actually bought a new one afterwards and it was such a night and day difference. The one I had lasted forever before that, I still love them haha.
there is practically no difference in their strength efficiency so use which ever one you can tied the easiest. I use the Palomar knot on all but the tiniest of hook eyes. The one difficulty with a Palomar is passing a bight through tiny hooks. I rarely use hooks that tiny so I am usually utilizing the Palomar. But I imagine fly fishermen would use a knot like the Uni ( _AKA the Grinner knot or the Duncan Loop_ ).
Used it for 40yrs only knot you need to know you can tie anything that has an eye also you can join any 2 lines together withe ease using The back to back uni knot It's awesome
Great question! I’ve seen plenty of tests show it in the middle 90s for % strength… but all I know is it hasn’t failed me! 🤙 thank you for sharing and for watching!
Instead of pulling the main line to seat the barrel of the knot, grasp the barrel between your fingertips and slide it home under gentle pressure on the main line. This reduces damage to the line as it makes the turn through the eye of the hook.
Great job on the video, my friend! I really enjoy surf fishing in the southern region of Australia and I focus on catching Mulloway and sharks. When it comes to my swivels, I prefer using the uni knot to tie them onto my 80lb fluorocarbon line. However, I learned a valuable lesson after losing a big fish due to my 4-wrap uni knot giving way. Wrapping 80lb fluorocarbon line over 5 turns can be a bit challenging, especially when coupled with a tendency towards laziness. As a recommendation, I would strongly suggest doing 5 wraps when tying a uni knot with line over 60lb.
Thanks ima use this tomorrow been losing bass using a fisherman’s knot so ima try using this one maybe the fisherman’s knot doesn’t work well on offset hooks
A bit difficult to explain without a visual, however, I invert the loop so the tag end goes inside both main strands and touches hook eye before wrapping. This reduces the angle the string takes as it leaves the hook eye when tightened. This takes a great knot to another level...
You threaded the eye of the hook going in opposite directions from the first example to the next. I'm guessing this doesn't matter for this knot. Also, would it strengthen the setup if we initially make two loops through the eye at the beginning step?
So simple, and if you can get the line through a hole or loop, you can tie it in pitch black night. It is almost exclusively used for everything in my fishing outside of the nail knot for tying a leader to fly line.
I was taught to run the line through the eye twice to make the "6" versus making the "6" without going through the eye. My father said it made the line less likely to break at the connection point since the stress divided. Is this a different knot completely? Your version appears much simpler to tighten with line weights above 10lbs so I will absolutely be switching for some things. Thanks!
I have heard of folks doing that, but I believe that would be a double line uni knot (not to be confused with the double uni knot!). I don’t know if it has been definitively shown which knot is stronger, but this knot is extremely strong as it is shown here! Thank you for the question and for watching!
I know i am late to this video, but before i saw this video i was using a way weaker knot, so when i used heavier baits, occasionally they would fly off because of the weak knot i've tied (syk, i did do the wetting thing). Thank you so much! I really want to try this one out and catch some pike before the mating season starts!🙏
thank you. I just know this is called uni knot. It is so convenient especially if you do not have a carabiner. I use this knot a lot of times and I kind of discovered or re-invent it coming from fisherman’s knot. Now I know it is called uni knot. I use this knot to pull my buoy, hold my spear gun and its shaft
I used to use the palomar knot exclusively. Several years ago i was on a charter fishing trip and i asked the captain what his favorite knot was. He said the uni. I learned it and havent used any other since.
The Palomar is stronger but only by a fraction. The deciding factor for me when choosing one is the size of the hook's eye. Passing a bight through a tiny eye is a struggle for my old eyes and fingers. Fortunately I use larger hooks for the type of fishing I do. The Uni ( the _Grinner Knot_ ) on ly needs the tag end to pass through the eye instead of a bight.
After a lifetime of fishing I can’t stress enough how important it is to really wet that line before you cinch it down. If you slide the barrel down to hook carefully with your fingers it’s better than just pulling the mainline until it tightens but with all those turns around the loop there is a lot of friction burn to the line if you aren’t super careful. I often wonder how many PBs or big fish have been lost to people who have tied this knot carelessly and not checked it for strength after it’s tied. I use 0.37mm and 0.40mm mono a lot and you can’t break that with your hands if you do it correctly but I’ve done tests and if it’s done carelessly and without wetting the line it will snap like cotton. Anglers be warned !!!!
That's one of the reason why I don't like this uni knot. You have to wet the line, especially if its mono to cinch this knot properly. With other knots like the Trilene knot, wetting the line is not needed if you properly cinch down the loops. The main strength it relies on is when the main light is pulled tight, it clamps down on the tag end and puts less stress on the loops around the main line. That's why the Trilene knot is one of the few that is rated up to 100% of the line strength. This knot is closer to a 85% line strength knot based on my own testing. The cinching of the coils on the line is very inconsistent and there are other similar knots that are better where you wrap the coils up the main line, hold the end and wrap it back down in opposite direction. That provides a much more even laying of the coils as you cinch it down than the uni.
@@bElLtOn14 Not necessarily. The testing determines if you're tying the knot correct or incorrectly. When you're breaking at the line strength at 100%, the test shows that wetting the knot had zero affect. The line doesn't burn on the Trilene if you cinch it properly. The trick is to slowly cinch it and tug the line until its loosely around the main line. You just slightly tug the end to make sure the coils are around the main line without it super tight against the main line. At that point, you pull tension on the main line and just push the coils up to take up the gap as the line stretches. You don't need to grab the tag end to tighten it up more so the lines don't rub. The strength of the knot is the tag end bites against the two loops on the Trilene and not the coils of line around the main line. I'm saying not every knot needs to be wet. With the uni knot, you DEFINITELY need to wet it given how you chinch the knot requires the line to rub, which is a bad thing in my opinion. That's probably a good reason why it can never reach 100% line strength. With the Trilene knot, I don't wet it and it still breaks at 100%. Could I wet it? Sure. But its not needed if tied properly. The proper cinching is the key.
Great knot for plugs Don't cinch it down lure swims great, joining lines great, for a hook I'll stick with the palomar never ever failed in many years for me,nice job here thanks
Originally, this knot started out being called, The Hangmans Noose...then it became the uni knot which I've used since the early 70's...Great knot and I came up with it as a joining knot....never failed me yet..
My go to knot (sometimes double pass the eye too) for hook length/mainline to swivel and mainline to hook for surface fishing, swore by it for years, never let me down but always known it as the grinner knot. Most people seem to use the Blood knot but i've had it slip on me and dont like how the tag end finishes pointing towards the hook/swivel, the grinner knot tag end finishes up the line away from what ever you have tied to. I use knotless knot to hook with a bait hair for bottom.
Awesome! Some folks prefer the tag end pointing down if you’re fishing in situations where you can catch weeds or muck… it has its place! Thanks for the comment, and for watching! 🤙
@@JustTheLip ahh yes thats a very good point i had not thought of, most likely since i often cover my knots with shrink tube so it hadnt been something I had even thought about.
I also use it to make my own 60-80 lb flurocarbon leaders. I wait to make the final 'cinch' until both the clasp end and swivel ends have been tied. Then I wet it and use a couple of heavy tools to hold each the swivel and clasp...then pull it very firmly. Love using this style of leader for pike and musky...way easier on the hands than a thin wire leader.
Pass the line twice through the eye to make the knot even more reliable (called the Fish 'n' fool knot). However this does make the knot more tricky to snug it down without kinking mono or fluoro, so you'll have to decide if you think the extra strength is worth the extra effort. I must say that in almost all my fishing the Uni knot seems to suffice.
Precisely. There is only one knot objectively stronger than the Fish 'n' Fool. But as long as your choice has an above 100% efficiency rating, factors like ease or speed of tying become more relevant than the knot strength.
A lot of times when I am tying a uni on heavier mono it gets kind of kinked at the top when I cinch it down even if I wet it really good with spit and cinch slowly. Any ideas how to lessen that kinking? One thing I did notice is that I usually do more wraps on my mono unis. Do you pull on the tag first to tighten and then pull on the main?
Heavier line is always trickier. In general, you don’t need as many wraps with heavier line, and that sometimes helps the complete the knot without problems. If that still isn’t working, I recommend another knot made for heavy line, like the Centauri knot.
Now that you know how to tie this knot, you already know one of the best ways to connect two lines together (e.g. your leader to your main line)! Check it out: ruclips.net/video/Ch94pF0BHtc/видео.html

Thank you for the tip!
Thanks for the tip! That’s crazy! Are you sure you lost it because it was only 4 turns?
I love this knot and you lexplain it so easy to understand. Thank you.
Just wanted to learn to tie a good fishing knot.......this became therapy, mate! haha! So relaxing!
Haha thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!! 🤙
When I was kid I learned that knot from a fishing book.
The only knot I ever used.
That’s awesome! If you have to use only one knot, it’s a good one! 🤙 thanks for watching!
Thank you so much sir. I feel like a boy scout now lol
Will be looking on ur channel for other useful tips!
Awesome!! You are welcome! 🙏 thank you for the comment!
Thank you for your knowledge and knot tips 🤙🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼
👊 absolutely, thank you for watching!
I have bad grip due to nerve damage, this helped thanks :)
😮😮😮😮 i finally got it thanks
Badass knot, never fails 💪
Gotta love it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for teachin me how to do the uni knot
Happy to help! Tight lines! 🤙🤙
Great video thanks 😊
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
+10 for the knot tutorial, -9 for the music, +10 for not showing your mouth. Here's your thumbs up lol
Great advice! Thank you!
Correct !
@@ahndeux should always wet every knot when you do it ....
So it doesn't burn the line, even with the trilene ..
Thanks! I have pretty bad Dyslexia and this worked well for me!🙃
I’m really glad to hear it worked! Thanks a lot for watching!
Great knot for plugs Don't cinch it down lure swims great, joining lines great, for a hook I'll stick with the palomar never ever failed in many years for me,nice job here thanks
I also use the palomar as well, both great knots! Thanks for watching!
Thank you👍👌
Absolutely 🤙🤙 thanks for watching!
Originally, this knot started out being called, The Hangmans Noose...then it became the uni knot which I've used since the early 70's...Great knot and I came up with it as a joining knot....never failed me yet..
Glad it has worked so well for you! Thanks for watching!
I've also always known it as the hangman's noose.
It's the only knot I've used for my fishing gear for 50 years.
Nice video.
I was using the trilene knot for connecting to my swivels. But with 15 lb mono or bigger it kept breaking. Switching to thus knot nnow. Thankyou.
Arguably the only knot you need to know. Uni to the spool. Double uni to the leader. Uni to the hook. Tight lines
Agree completely! Even uni as a bobber stop! 😂💯 thanks for watching!
Tbh idk why I’ve never thought of using this knot for things other than tying leaders lmao. I’ll definitely be doing that going forward.
A great knot. I've never had one fail yet.
I agree completely!
Very helpful thank you
Wow - that easy and thanks for the video
good demonstration!
Excellent! Thanks!
Does it matter which side of the eye you go through. I.E. front, hook side. Or back, not hook side?
Nice knot!
Thank you! Cheers! 🤙
But as long as your choice has an above 100% efficiency rating, factors like ease or speed of tying become more relevant than the knot strength.
thank you for the video!
Thank you this will be better than my granny knot 😂.
Haha you're welcome, glad it was helpful!!
So cool thanks❤
A lot of times when I am tying a uni on heavier mono it gets kind of kinked at the top when I cinch it down even if I wet it really good with spit and cinch slowly. Any ideas how to lessen that kinking? One thing I did notice is that I usually do more wraps on my mono unis. Do you pull on the tag first to tighten and then pull on the main?
Heavier line is always trickier. In general, you don’t need as many wraps with heavier line, and that sometimes helps the complete the knot without problems. If that still isn’t working, I recommend another knot made for heavy line, like the Centauri knot.
Knots are amazing.
Agreed! 🤙
Really helped me great video
