My vietnamese brothers here in California use the mini marshmallows+shrimp to catch stocked catfish and it works very well. I thought it was because it helps the shrimp float above any vegetation but I guess they like the smell/taste of marshmallows as well😂

That pelican things is what makes the difference between a good and a great channel, and the difference between just a view or a view, a like and a sub. Good job. As an former Dutch beach fisherman myself I do have to admit that's it's not also unfortunately not always so black-and-white. We have these huge greedy seagulls that will attack whatever you're trying to pull in or even when your casting out they'll try to snatch it from the air. Often they'll get stuck but they'll peck at your line and so it cuts and they end up in the water far out of reach. So it doesn't have to be a left out gear but also a fish that got away, died with the line still on it and get picks up a bird or other animal.

I'm guessing that line the bird got caught in was broken off from a snagged line, not left intentionally. I do wonder how long snagged lines that break off on stuff stays intact. It would be cool if it broke down relatively soon so as not to tangle birds, turtles, etc. Only thing is I imagine string that did that would be very strong!

That was after we called DNR and waited 2 hours for them to finally call me back and say they couldn't get out to the lake. I couldn't let that thing sit there and die.

I'm from Los Angeles, CA. and I'm about to turn 58 years old in a couple of weeks.
I grew up about a mile from the beach and also my parents had a second house in the local mountains about a two hour drive from our main home.
I did a lot of fishing both saltwater and fresh water all my life and using all sorts of bait.
Using miniature marshmallows is a very old school bait. I'm talking as one of the first baits I was taught to use at around five or six years old, so 50 years or more.
The colored miniature marshmallows, don't know if they still make those colored ones anymore, work better than the white ones. They work for Rainbow Trout very well in lakes and rivers, streams, and Small Mouth Bass will bite at them as well. Catfish will bite but there are better baits for all these fish.
The cost is really a good reason for using the marshmallows. You get a large bag for a couple of dollars and even if you double up the bait on a hook you still get about 75 fresh bait casts.
I never tried using them in saltwater fishing. It didn't seem to make sense, honestly. Live bait or cuts of fish or squid or deep water lures and jigs work best depending on what you are fishing for.
But miniature marshmallows are a very old school bait, nothing new about using them.

Up in Canada the line you use to secure your bait on the hook is called Spider Thread. We also shore fish a bit differently. We first pu on an egg sinker which has a hole though the center. Then we attach a two eye swivel. then the required amount of leader you need. Then your hook with the bait. This way, when the fish takes the bait it does not feel the weight of the sinker, when pulling the line. This gives the fish a better chance to swallow the bait.
