  • The Daleks are the doctors biggest enemy and Doctor Who's most popular villain and maybe one of the most Well known villains EVER.
However since 2005 we've had several stories like Bad Wolf/Parting of the ways to the cult of skaro (dalek sec, caan, jast & thay) in doomsday & evolution/daleks in manhattan to dalek caan and davros in The stolen Earth & Journeys end to the finale in Victory of The Daleks and many many more.
But as of recently the Daleks have been overused to the max with boring stories like Resolution and Revolution of the daleks alongside the Paradigm dalek arc being stale and boring and with the Bronze time war daleks still being around, in today's video we look at how Doctor Who have ruined the Daleks and how they can fix it!

The Daleks have only ever worked for me in New Who in Series 1 and 4. The Doctor's PTSD in the first and full-scale invasion in the second. Moffat didn't seem to actually like using them and Chibnall misused them like everything else.

Sooner or later The Doctor had to get over that PTSD, in fact I can't imagine the classic Doctors having that. That is very human.

I think they just need to find something new to do with them. Tom Baker's entire 7 years he only met the daleks twice in Genisis and Destiny. Then Davison, Colin Baker, and McCoy only met them once. I feel RTD wrote the daleks the best with them slowly returning from the time war. Then in Tennnat's era all the daleks he met were part of the same Cult of Skaro. Which was brilliant its the same ones.

I think the Daleks aren't exactly ruined however I do think they need a bit of a refresh. Whilst I love the Time War design of the Daleks I would quite like to see them gain a new paint scheme (which we have only seen with Dalek Sec & The Ironside Daleks. I feel the newer designs like the Paradigm or Scout Daleks never worked as they just were either too bulky or too slimmed down but to see them doing something new or a take on an older storyline like the Dalek Civil War of the classic era could be fun

There's also room to include pre disfigured Davros which is where they're already going to take that character

I think combining both the gunmetal grey Dalek’s colour scheme, with the modern dalek design and a white eye stalk colour, could work IMO.
I love the bronze daleks, but they’ve become old and overused nowadays. Combining these two shows both their classic origin and their modern days. Also, the reason I chose the 70s colours over the 60s, is because they just look more menacing.

3:44 - Chibnall has talked about this, the 2022 New Year Special was originally going to be a third episode of the "Dalek trilogy" but due to COVID and budgetary issues brought on by that those plans had to be scrapped so unfortunately that was out of his control. I personally think that Chibnall's Dalek episodes are the best since the RTD era, I think that he made them an actual threat again as I felt that Moffat misused them as if he didn't understand them, whereas Chibnall clearly understands them well and why the Daleks are so popular! I will say though, as much as I love the bronze Daleks we REALLY need a permanent redesign.

They’re went through a saturation rot as they did in the 70s. Where before resurrection the daleks slowly grew more monotone & “robotic”; where was sequel series slowly devolved into just shrieking barbarians who are there out of brand obligation. There’s a delicate balance to making truly good Dalek episodes, but a big key for that, is reserving them for big stories where their presence or reveal kicks stakes x10.
Also yes, no more time-war casings. They’re done

You mentioned the Daleks taking over planets.
That could be one possible story they could do with the Daleks.
A two or three episode story where the doctor land on a planet maybe to relax with his companion, only for a Dalek invasion force to be spotted in the distance.
It will arrive in two weeks or a month at best.
The Doctor considers evacuating or just running away with his companion.
But is persuaded to remain and forced to take up the mantle of the warrior once more.
Episode one is the preparation and getting to know the different characters, episode 2 is the fighting and episode 3 is basically the Doctor having to evacuate the planet and escape with the survivors.
We will see the Doctor having to make though choices.
Oh we got to know captain Erantis very well, well the daleks are coming in on the civilian ships.
And the Doctor have to order Captain Erantis ships to act as a shield, get every citizen who can do it, into combat.
Oh 7 year old timmy your size is perfect, guess what you will have to crawl down to the switch area, and each time you see a switch give out replace it.
Nurse Jenny the tactical board has been blown out until we can get emergency repairs done YOU will have to manually target each Dalek.
And in the end the entire ship is blown up and the daleks pour through.
In the end out of maybe the 20 ships that left the planet with the remaining population only 2 or 3 badly damaged ships make it to safety.
That in my mind would be an excellent way to make the Daleks scary.
The Doctor didn´t win, the planet wasn´t saved, and his greatest achievement was that he managed to save a few ships.

I think they should also maybe try to modernise some of the better classic dalek looks. I feel like the 3 looks that'd look amazing in a newer build would be the Renegade Daleks, the Imperial Daleks & the silver Daleks. If they made the designs using some more modern technics to make it look like a metal instead of painted wood then gave them some kinda big story. I think maybe a story where the doctor goes back in the time line to the Dalek Civil war would be good as these are the most realistic daleks in my opinion. Have the events happen during some human Dalek war period or something & basically just have a massive battle like we saw in Remembrance of the Daleks & Resurerction & Revelations of the Daleks the three best Dalek episodes of classic who. The three R dalek stories. We also have Genesis but its more of the story of the Kaleds & Thaals & the events that lead to them creating the Daleks. Whilst the three third doctor episodes are all kinda the same & then the 1st & 2nd doctor have a few good episodes but none really are great. (Note I am yet to watch the last 2nd doctor Dalek Story which's name escapes me, so I can't comment on it) Then again what I want from a good Dalek story is interesting concepts & a big Dalek battle which feels impactful.
Edit: I feel like episodes such as 5 & 6th doctor ones are great examples of also the Daleks winning. In the 5th the daleks actually don't really win but everyone is dead & its the bloodiest episode in the series. then we have the 6th doctor 1 where the majority of the people die & the daleks still win & continue on to remembrance.

I feel like the show should try there hand at reworking some more Big Finish Dalek episodes that are considered very well. Like how Dalek by far the best Dalek episode of New Who is basically a rework of the story Jubilee they are distinct enough however that you can watch one & see what is similar to the other but still enjoy it as a seperate story. Sure something like the Genocide machine or one of the countless great Dalek stories could be reworked into a tv episode. In my opinion the best Dalek episodes of recent years are Series 1 to 3 stories which all are pretty great however Series 2 does kinda neglect the two other intresting concepts in it one being the cybermen & the other being Torchwood which feels like we just got a glimpse at them & they're already dead. Then the Moffatt era had two episodes which are good the Series 4 episode victory of the Daleks up until the last part of it where they kinda ran out of a story & just had a rushed finish maybe if it was a two parter it'd have worked better sure the season finale could've been condensed into a slightly longer than usual episode because the 2nd half & 1st half don't have much happen in them. The other being into the Dalek which is the 2nd best dalek episode. I think a few of the books also could make good episodes like the Prisoner of the Daleks which would make a great maybe 3 parter or 2 parter & it really makes you hate the daleks again as Dalek returned the fear Prisoner returns the hatred & the understanding of why the daleks are the main villain of the show. I think chibnall almost had a few good dalek episodes like the New Year timeloop one which I think would've been far better if we only had the cast be in the loop & have the Daleks be the same every loop allowing for them to fail & adapt instead of the kinda odd ending, also let the daleks hit something. The 1st Dalek one resolution was pretty good but the one after was just terrible in comparison.

The bronze Daleks are undoubtedly a great design but they’ve looked worse from Moffat’s era onwards. The casing is too clean and toy looking. Plus they’re filmed at weird angles, especially in the Chibnall era. They lost the weathering in the armour that was present during the RTD era. Metal rusts, especially for beings that travel through space and fight other species. The wear and tear actually complemented the bronze as well and gave it a more realistic look. Also I hate the cgi for them in recent years. How can a cgi Dalek from 2009 look better than a cgi Dalek from 2021. I definitely think the bronze Daleks overstayed their welcome after series 4. Moffat had the right idea about changing the design, especially for a new Doctor in a new era. The execution just wasn’t the best.

This is all coming from a fan of Sci-fi and Dr Who in particular, and I largely would agree with you on everything going on.
There's a problem though, Dr Who isn't made for you anymore, it's not made for Sci-Fi fans anymore, it's not even made for Dr Who fans anymore.
    Its made for Consoomers.
They're part of Disney now and Disney knows that "Bronze Daleks sell toys" and they want that money. So they'll keep the status Quo and not change a thing for any length of time. Same with the stories, same with the ideas, all of it will be the same thing recycled endlessly.
They don't want originality, Futurama told you exactly what these people think over 20 years ago.
"Clever things make people feel stupid and unexpected things make them feel scared."
And it's right, they know general audiences don't want different things or interesting things or new things, they want the comfortable, the safe, the comfy and reliable things. And they'll burn everything to the ground and complain you're the problem for wanting to challenge them with new things.

the daleks became weak. in RTD era it took powerful weapons to take 1 Dalek down. like highly powered direct energy beams like jack or rose's gun. now it seems you can just push them over.
one concept from dalek i wish they explored more is that touching a dalek could be deadly. like ddn't they say one dude touched it and burst into flames?
i also think it's weird how the daleks kept joining forces with other villians. yes the concpet of an alliecne to stop the doctor in the pandorica episdoe was interesting and unique. when done once. but then they join the tenzalore. then team up with the master, and the cybermen.
    no. daleks kill cybermen.
the flux seemed to point out that the dalesk and sontarans had some rivalry aswell.so maybe explore that. an idea might be something described by 4th doctor. enemies becoming allies in fear of Daleks. have sontarans and rutans team up to fight daleks.
