This was such a unexpectedly great film. And dark AF in places. The villains are basically serial killers for goodness sake. And their backstories are extremely tragic as well.
As I got older I began to pay more attention to the zombie victims. The two guys with suits and the women with fur scarves seem like mobsters that were invited to "bury the hatchet", and the two zombies that looked like tourists are likely someone's missing parents or grandparents.
exactly. the music was great and the villians all had complex backstories. they were evil but not for evils sake. from trauma instead.
Zombie Island, Which's Ghost, Alien Invaders and Cyber Chase were my favorite Scooby-Doo movies of my childhood.
Same. They need to bring back the animation studio that work on those classic films.
Cyber Chase had a really good premise, but lacked execution. The gang getting zapped into a computer game and having to win all levels in order to get out of the game is a really good idea. I even liked how the real Scooby Gang met their virtual counterparts. But The Cyber Chase falls apart with the reveal of the villain and his motive. And it just continues to go downhill with every sequel. Scooby Doo has UNFORTUNATELY replaced The Land Before Time as THE POSTER CHILD for the term ZOMBIE FRANCHISE. With the exception of the AMAZING crossovers with the WB show The SuperNatural and Courage The Cowardly Dog Scooby Doo is one franchise that would be better off dead and buried.
@@joshuahall8176 Yeah as a kid I thought it was amazing but nowadays when I watch it it's just okay
@Funny Clown I still ❤️ the original Scooby Doo series from The 1960's Zombie Island, The Witches Ghost, and Alien Invaders and I ALWAYS WILL
Shut up spam bot
This movie was my gateway to Horror and I still cherish it to this day all these years later!
It kept what made the show work so well while really pushing the boundaries of that PG rating to it's limits with it's dark concepts and gruesome imagery. And it was the only time that Scooby actually succeeded in being more adult.
*cough* Velma *cough*
I love how they get around the slavery story line by saying it’s a pepper plantation, it’s subtle, and actually works. This film has aged a lot better than I can remember it. The animation is just incredible.
There is a huge pepper plantation in Louisiana its where the peppers for tobasco sauce is made. I think they were more parodying that than avoiding the slavery issue
@@weslittlereptilefamily3418yet they still show confederate soldier zombies. It’s kinda poor timing when Daphne says the zombies are the good guys right when Shaggy runs from a confederate soldier.
I love that the zombies are voodoo zombies and not the typical flesh eating zombies that be to much dark for a children's movie but I love how original the story is we never seen this story in horror before.
Given the current furore over Velma, Doc's rant about big corporations playing it safe with legacy characters may have been premature
I remember getting hyped for this movie after watching the trailer on Cartoon Network. I stayed up until 8pm to watch it (my parents had a strict bed time for me, except this one night), It was so awesome!! The mood was perfect because I watched it alone at night as a kid and I think this movie is the reason why I love horror movies today, from classics like Night of the Livivng Dead, Evil Dead, The Blob, It Came From Outer Space, Universal Monsters to modern horror movies.
Were you scared by it?
Had a thought about the whole "The Monsters are Real" thing. If you think about it, it could refer to how the villains are Monsters in a literal and Metaphorical sense as they are Serial Killers as opposed to the thieves and robbers the gang is used to dealing with.
They really are monsters.
That, and we didn't have Scrappy Doo involved to bog down the idea.
@@robbiewalker2831
I think Scrappy might've worked if even _his_ infinite courage faltered. It doesn't happen often, so it really helps sell the threat when it does.
And DAMMIT, not all the original villains were bad guys in masks Daphne, charlie the robot wasn't even a human! No wonder you get trapped so often!!
I like that this movie serves as both a Deconstruction and Reconstruction of the Scooby Doo formula, With the Monsters being real and the original reason being just a MacGuffin to get the gang on the island only to get forgotten halfway through the movie but also shows us that the Gang are still kinda necessary to expose whatever happens in the place they are.
In my opinion Scrappy can be less annoying if he didn't talk. He can bark his little catch phrase instead and tiny puppies when big barks are just adorable.
An orange undershirt that can be seen by the collar would of went a long way to help Fred’s modern design and still stay loyal. Plus I just missed that touch of color.
Fuck yeah, that would've been solid
5:31 Yes, split. Some want to kill Scrappy Doo, some want to kill him AND desecrate his corpse.
Edit: Fuck Flim-Flam
Set up my outside inflatable screen and watched this masterpiece on a fairly big screen over the summer and it was amazing
A classic for a lot of reasons not just for Scooby-Doo but cartoons in general. Absolute masterpiece in every way. The animation, soundtrack, everything. 1000/5 boxes of Scooby-Snacks.
I was kind of surprised that this and stuff like Witch's Ghost had actual supernatural threats in them.
It’s terror time again will always be a banger to listen
I love this movie. Remember watching it as a kid after trick or treating on Cartoon Network back in the 90’s. This is my favorite along with Reluctant Werewolf from 88’
10:40 "my cartoon character i speak has to be vegetarian"
What a great Demand for a clearly not insane Being
This and the Witch's Ghost are the cream of the crop for Scoob.
Both Wolfula and Ghoulash are great on their own, but put them together and that's where the real magic happens. I could (and have) listened to them argue for hours.
The second anyone mentions that series the theme song immediately bursts into my head
THERE'S A MYSTERY IN TOWN
SO CALL THE COOLEST PUP AROUND-
Man, I’m coming back to this channel after years and like
He hasn’t changed a bit :)
I think goulash should have to watch and review the new Velma series because you do not need to put yourself through that doctor wolfula
I actually watched this last night on the Ghoulog channel. Do you expect me to watch it again here? Well good, because I am!
This here is a Masterpiece! Truly the best scooby-doo film ever!
This is definitely a classic! i loved this as a kid and would watch it with my friends constantly lol it was fun as we chilled out having pizza and playing Pokemon lol aw the memories
I still have this in my collection, and my son and I talk about it to this day. We used to watch it at least once every month.
Personally, the only thing I would change about this movie would have to be Fred’s outfit. Other than that, everything else this film had to offer was awesome!!
Scott Innes as Scooby-Doo
Billy West as Shaggy Rogers
Mary Kay Bergman as Daphne Blake
Frank Welker as Fred Jones
BJ Ward as Velma Dinkley
Adrienne Barbeau as Simone Lenoir
Tara Strong as Lena Dupree
Cam Clarke as Beau Neville
Jim Cummings as Jacques, Captain Moonscar
Mark Hamill as Snakebite Scruggs, Airport Manager
Jennifer Warren as Chris
Ed Gilbert as Mr. Beeman
I remember first watching Morgan Moonscar rising from the dead very clearly to this day as a kid. I was eating chicken nuggets with lots of ketchup and when I saw a zombie rising all I could think of was blood.
Lost my appetite that day but still watched the film to the end, lol.😄
GREATEST SCOOBY-DOO MOVIE OF ALL TIME this movie could've been in theaters.
Best Scooby-Doo movie ever and unlike the new God awful Velma show, it actually understands the characters and does dark subject matter well.
"This time... The monsters are real!"
My favorite Scooby-Doo movie ever it was genuinely spooky and scary
The benchmark for any scooby doo related media. It would please me to no end to either get a live action adaptation or another animated film that reaches this level. Side note, they really respected these characters and actually gave Daphne more substance than any version I've seen. I fucking love this movie.
It's terror time again!!
This is still one of my favourite Scooby Doo cartoon movie's ever
That’s awesome I love zombie Island. It was one of my favorites and yeah I have the VHS tape plus goulash did you curl or styled your hair I like it.
I watched Scooby Doo on zombie island in 2nd grade at powell elementary school when I was a kid.
Doc, hope you look into Kokchak the Night Stalker. Some good 70’s kino.
I wonder if Goulash and Dr. Wolfula are the same person. I never seen them both together.
Great scooby stuff! But what about another Crypt episode review?! :)
This was great on VHS, the Courage The Cowardly Dog pilot was the cherry on top
What doctor Wolfula doesn't seem to understand is that this movie is not intended to be realistic. It's intended to be funny, scary, and to subvert tropes.
4:16, 16:43-17:13 These parts of the video hit differently now that Velma is a thing.
This movie made my childhood.
I have alot of great memories with this carton.
I kind of assumed you weren't going to touch Velma. That's okay, it is awfully low hanging fruit for such a die hard fan.
Thanks - have been meaning to see this.
I had feeling you already cover this, but forgot that was on ghoulog. My bad ghoulas.
Even as a child I DESPISED SCRAPPY DOO! 😊
Somehow as a kid this movie didn't scare me but I was terrified of the Yowie Yahoo vampire
I’ll happily rewatch this, like, and comment on this video!
I enjoyed rewatching this review of Zombie Island. Going to Ghoulog channel now to watch the review of 'Return to Zombie Island'. :)
I hope you do Scooby-Doo and the reluctant wearwolf soon!!! 🤞
Woo hoo! Always down to watch the same great video again!
Speaking of Scooby Doo, Doc, you plan on reviewing the new Scooby Doo Courage crossover that finally came out a year or two ago? I've heard good things about it, and it even brings back some of the OG cast from Courage's past. With the exceptions of Lionel G Wilson, Arthur Andersen, Billie Lou Watt, Arnold Stang and Peter Fernandez due to them no longer being with us. Simon Prebble MIGHT still be alive, but I don't know if the computer made any appearances this go-round.
I LOVE ZOMBIE ISLAND!
Oh Fuck yeah Doc, That's the spot
Thanks for the Video 😀
All that’s left is for doc to review the mystery inc. series. Such an amazing series
Irony of the fact that Simone and Lena got their revenge on Morgan Moonscar and his gang of pirates however Morgan and his pirate men got their revenge on the werecats even in death so Morgan Moonscar still won in the end this another interesting twist nobody picks up.
Even better than I remember
Just think, this inspired 'The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned' DLC for the original Borderlands!
9:09 What's wrong with the vest? It's a fave in the Midwest. Practical utility, it's the best!
9:16 Yeah, his vest should be khaki or brown. Maybe light brown or beige to match his hiking boots.
11:54 There's our Velma!
12:00 Even in cartoons, they use that "bread in the bag" trope!
12:50 So basically Wilford Brimley's Cajun character from Hard Target.
15:07 Back when every version of Velma was still Velma-like.
18:58 And a setting evocative of Lucio Fulci films. Speaking of which, are there any eye-gouging scenes?
19:34 Looks like that zombie's already had its eye gouged out. Fulci influence, confirmed!
21:07 Is it just me or does that remind you of Sleepwalkers (which should be called "Skinwalkers")? "Look out, boy! She'll chew you uup!"
22:52 X-Files/Scooby-Doo crossover fanfiction?! Sure! Why not?!
23:10 She could be bi (not that it matters). She's the Alphys of the bunch, after all. No one ever said a brainiac couldn't have a wandering heart.
23:44 Watch alongside House 2: The Second Story - which is actually a fun movie as long you're not expecting it to be a carbon copy of The Evil Dead, Phantasm, or the first House. Or Hausu for that matter.
I'm still waiting for the review of witch's Ghost
I LITERALLY just finished watching Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island! What are the chances 😱
your more likley to win a million dollars
So, why does Ghoulash wear baseball shirts anyway? Is it some sort of symbolic meaning to justify beating him with a baseball bat?
Great flick!
Everything you said after 16:32 turned out to be completely wrong when it came to Mindy K taking Velma.
Ghoulag doesn’t deserve to be punished with return to zombie island
He already was. It's on the Ghoulog channel. Check it out if you want someone to suffer with you.
@@1krani A very pointless Sequel
@@1krani I mean Scooby Doo Return to Zombie Island is A pointless Sequel
return to zombie island was an abomination
i had no idea goulash had his own channel. ive been a wolfulite for like 5 years
Never minded West as Shaggy
Great stuff
4:15 He saw Velma
I was today years old when I found out that Adrienne Barbeau played the villain.
In the scooby doo universe, it's cannon that there exists an actual cat-god that can bestow immortality to its followers.
WHAT
Honestly shaggys voice in this movie is my favorites lol
I think Zombie Island is the best Animated Scooby Doo movie. Its very nostalgic to me as I watched Zombie Island, Cyber Chase and Witches Ghost when I was little.
Zombie Island though without a doubt was the best one.
As a kid I always like cyber chase more than zombie island idk y though
@Doctor Wolfula When are you going to start reviewing Season 2 of Scooby-Doo Where Are You for the Doo’ Talkin To Me series?
It's terror time again
My favorite one of all time
Mark hammil voicing himself for the 2nd time? Didn't he voice himself both in The Simpsons, and Freekazoid?
I did enjoy the version of Scrappy in the Scooby Apocalypse comics
One of my favorite movies!
13:24 Say What???
Are you gonna do the 3 cycles?
This movie had one detail that made me realize it was complete fiction. Shaggy and Scooby clearly had to pass a test for cannabis metabolites to get that Custom's job. So disappointing.
If you think that confederate soldier thing is weird look into Scooby and shaggy's ancestry for sumn even weirder 🥲
(Hint:their grandparents most likely owned slaves)
You mean Colonel Sanders of the haunted island or Shaggy's deceased Colonel Beauregard from Boo Brothers?
@@1krani Yes
Great film.
Love scooby doo content on the channel
You should do a Review of Scooby-Doo Alien Invaders 😁
For Zombie Island: Still a better idea than what we have now.
For Scrappy: He DOESN'T deserve hate and he should be used for a NEXT GEN type of story.
Scrappy isn't bad, he was just in an awful show, James Gunn killed Scrappy Doo because he hated him as a child.
@@cinder7258 Much as I love Guardians.... that was a petty and childish move
After all the atrocious Scooby-Doo media as of late I'm glad the doc reviewed my favorite next to witches ghost
Yes this is definitely a winner and we still don't know why that abomination of Return to Zombie Island was ever created.
This movie is peak nostalgia, the 90’s Japanese animation, late 90’s-early 2000’s rock soundtrack, Scooby-Doo… I can still remember the previews for Cartoon Network’s cartoon cartoon theater showings of this movie by heart, good times
Ok
Cyberchase coming soon?
Witches ghost is next
@@ronswanson7371 Another Great Scooby Doo Movie
Velma should have taken mountains of notes from this movie
One of my favorite pieces of Scooby media. Thanks to you, Doc and... that other guy, for this trip down memory lane.
