"I think something slashed my tires" "Good~" Fred over there sounding so happily sadistic about that lolol Best part of the movie Makes me laugh everytime lol Amazing video as always sweetheart!! ❤️💗💜
Velma... dear, the zombies aren't robots and there is no rational realization for the cat creatures. That was supernatural forces at work. Hell, after Zombie Island, you dealt with a real witch and sorcerer, real Aliens, and a rogue A.I. that pulled you into a video game that almost KILLED YOU. and that's not including Mystery Incorporated or the live-action movies
Plus they already were TOLD about the pirate's treasure when the cat people, the LAST survivors mind you *outright mentioned by them btw*, explained the past events. They were taken care of BEFORE they could bury the treasure, ergo they would have USED said treasure to improve the island and pay people to come there.
One of the many, MANY reasons I hated this movie was Velma's character. I have no issues with Kate Micucci voicing her, she's an awesome character. But while Mindy Cohn depicted her as a skeptical sleuth who was mildly open to the paranormal (as seen in the AWESOME Mystery Incorporated series.) Kate Micucci's Velma is such a die-hard skeptic that half of the movie Happy Halloween Scooby Doo is spent with her expressing how desperate she is for things to "make sense" in the universe
its not the actress's fault, its the writers'. They wrote her that way, and it gets WORSE. This movie not only takes place in the same time line as Zombie Island and 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo but also takes place in the DC universe. In Happy Halloween Scooby Doo they crossover with Batman by having Jonathon Crane aka the Scarecrow one of Batman's arch enemies. Now while most of Bat's rogue gallery don't use magic, aren't supernatural in origin, or have superpowers SOME OF THEM DO. With the likes of Poison Ivy (powerful metahuman), Killer Croc (mutant cannibal) and Solomon Grundy (voodoo zombie that gives the flying boy scout TROUBLE) running around Gotham is enough to throw doubt on Velma's "The Smart One" role it GETS EVEN WORSE. Its not just Batman its the entire DC Universe. Not only are aliens, magic users, and mutants are real they are part of everyday life in some parts of the world. Not to mention the invasins of Darkside, Amazons, Black Lanterns and LITERAL DEMONS FROM HELL that has happen WORLD WIDE AND IS PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. At this point Velma doesn't look uninformed on current events but is blatantly suffering from some psychosis and needs psychiatric help. On the plus side imagine the Justice League on a lunch break swapping stories on the hoaxes they busted up when they thought it was a real emergency. Also Scooby Doo Hoaxes actually would work in world like DC. Officer: "Hey chief i got a report the sawmill is haunted. Should we go check it out?" Chief: "Ignore it." Officer: "But... Why?" Chief: "We're small town cops with a small budget that barely gets us by while city cops in Gotham and Metropolis with billions of dollars worth of equipment can't even handle this crap without a Super." "Just ignore it till it solves itself or it becomes a big enough problem to attract a guy in tights" "Trying anything on our own would be suicide" Officer: "Oh. We could try those hippies with the talking dog? They have a good track record and all we have to do is fake a town festival with free food to attract their attention." Chief: "Now that's why I hired you." "I'll go talk to the mayor."
Velma has seen ghost of actual people, a samurai who want trap for thousands of years, a demon, a living virus, a witch and warlock, aliens and a dragon but doesn't want to believe it.
I actually hated this movie so much that I contacted it's screenwriter to complain. He told me that he actually hates his own film as much as we do, and he was forced by the studio to make it like this because they insisted that the point of Scooby-Doo was to teach kids that monsters weren't real and there was nothing to be afraid of. He also told me he would pass on my complaints to the studio executive that said that.
Saying that monsters and other supernatural things don't exist in Scooby-Doo makes no sense. If there is no supernatural how can Scooby speak in his weird broken language.
I FUCKING KNEW IT! Doesn't help this movie is apparently part 2 of a fucking TRILOGY with "Curse of the 13th Ghost" and "Happy Halloween!" The former being ANOTHER outing of "everything paranormal is fake!" bullshit and the latter being a poorly reskinned version of the Billy & Mandy Halloween special with a lazily thought out mystery. I fucking can't anymore man...but all in all, I'm going to make sure I try to spread this around because this needs to be made known.
Hmmm...perhaps this is why WBD canceled Scoob! Holiday Haunt after production on it was complete. That was HBOmax's prequel too Scoob. Wait, why the heck did Warner Brothers Discovery still allow Velma to pass through the pipeline?
@@powerstar-uf7oh Totally agree with your assessment of 90's cartoons but I think the 2010's are more split than straight-up bad. Early 2010's were good in many respects, but the later 2010's struggled to keep up, and RZI is a perfection representation of that fall-out. Maybe 2020 cartoons will do the complete opposite? Who knows.
@@powerstar-uf7oh *nods head in understanding* Alright that was a good breakdown and I see what you mean. Which shows do you think made it out of the 2010's unscathed, would you say? (Also I agree with your opinion on the animated movies, I def. think 2010-2014 were the best years).
@@powerstar-uf7oh Wow, given the fact that I've only heard of a few of these (Scooby, My Little Pony, PPG if you're talking about Peppa Pig but correct me if I'm wrong, & Teen Titans Go for instance) then I can see what you mean about the 2010's being bad if they constantly pulled the plug on good shows but left bad shows to run wild. I personally like Gravity Falls, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, & Gumball as good 2010's shows but I DO understand about all three having their ups and downs especially the latter two.
@@powerstar-uf7oh Oh okay lol you meant Powerpuff Girls, though Peppa Pig WAS rebooted in 2016 (sorta kinda, more like continued tbh) as well so that's why I asked. But yeah, all of those shows I know about even if I haven't watched most of them, so it's too bad the other ones you mentioned got the shaft. I feel the same way though, as long as a cartoon or animated film is at least watchable then I can still find a way to enjoy it even if it's not the best.
The real crime It truly committed outside of robbing our nostalgia blind Is there wasn't much Elvira In this and even herself felt scammed and lied too! Also I'm not gonna sound like a broken record when It comes to the "New Velma".
“Also I’m not gonna sound like a broken record when it vomes to the ‘New Velma’” As in for voice actor wise or the movies’ current characterization? Cause if the former I honestly don’t see much of a problem with Kate Miccuchi voicing the character, as I do like her in Be Cool Scooby Doo and Scooby Doo Guess Who. But if the latter, however, agree as the who debunking skeptic routine is getting annoying in these movies continuity.
This. The earliest sign outside the Mystery Inc animation/characterization that this wasn't canonically the same universe. But they sure did try to make it work anyway -.- about as hard as I work on my upload schedule. Yes shots fired XD but yeah... thanks for watching btw
I was actually never aware there was a second movie- Oh lord. The first movie was so perfect there was literally no reason for there to be a sequel V-V
I like how shade doesn't have any exciting or freaking out drawings so it just goes from the shocked "what the fuck is that disgusting thing" to happy to blushing-
Haha glad it's almost kinda part of the fun I guess? I'm updating my stills at the request and benevolence of my own artist so... might be a bit before I stockpile some. Hope people like the update, too. Or don't hate it lol Anyway yeah I really appreciate the comment buddy
So I did a little research. The reason the original looked pretty damn good for a direct to DVD is because in the late 90s it was still done with animation cels. As in hand painted characters and backgrounds. When things are hand drawn, inked and painted they always have an artistry kind of look that digital just can't replicate. It also seemed to have a more "anime" kind of style to it as opposed to the original 60s hanna barbera so the anatomy and animation was a lot more elaborate. I suspect like I told you yesterday that part of it must have been made in Asia to warrant that anime look. Unfortunately I have to say the characters in this movie look much more on model with the original 60s than Zombie Island 1. But the colour pallets seem pretty dead compared to movie 1 because it was done digitally and the colour pallets are either too saturated or too dull. Unless you apply lots of effects to it like disney did in their digital 2D movies to make them look nice, just paint bucket tooling that shit and leaving it as it is can make it look really artificial. Honestly I like the lineart on them and that's about it. Those thicker and thinner lines look pretty good and they pay homage to the 60s hanna barbera style, but the part they shouldn't have copied from that era is the very stiff and "economic" animation. Cels costed money so a lot of characters like the flintstones would just stay still for many frames and just move their mouths. Clearly they should have put a lot more budget in this movie to avoid doing that but look, they did it. It looks lazy. It looks cheap.
Yeah if I remove my nostalgia goggles (tight as I admit they are affixed) and look at it on it's own, it's cheap but competently made, boring but harmless. Interesting to hear again from someone on the inside ;) I had a feeling this was sort of what was going on (ish?) But it's cool to hear more about the process that's generally done. I do prefer the stylized, imperfect anime style (totally not what how I should describe it but I do lol) of the original. But I will give credit where it's due, it is boring but not made poorly.
Return to Zombie Island, the movie we neither wanted nor needed Honestly i did not know this movie existed and I still wish i was blissfully unaware, It literally has all the hallmarks of Mystery Inc. but even that series for all its tropes was better. The best thing this movie imo had going for it was your voice over and then that final burn, I love it And lets all pray for better days ahead for us all.
I really appreciate that. And yes let us hope for better days, mate. Sorry to show you the movie, but at.least you know the copy that I showed you is safely buried and gone.
@@ShadeNocturne That is 1 less copy in the world, good Anything better for the next year be good Witches Ghost Halloween tree just about anything else. maybe Need a pallet cleanser after this one. An if Film Theory is to be believed, Return to Zombie Island is what happens when the whole Scooby Doo universe resets itself.
if anything this movie can act as a representation of how the old scoobys weren't as bad as we thought they were and stand as a representation of what not to do when making a continuation.
@@Titanusrex1616 There was a comic actually, which celebrated the shows 50th Anniversary. One of the chapters involved Bat Mite and a Scooby Doo inspired 5th dimension sprite. The short story: Various incarnations of the gang (which included the original, live action movie, red shirt Shaggy era, Mystery Inc and Scooby Apocolypse) met and teamed up to stop a giant Scrappy Doo...who was really Vincent Van Ghoul and the Hex Girls. *I AM NOT MAKING THAT PART UP SWEAR TO GOD*
As a story writer who’s on the progress of writing a book series, I find it completely stupid for sequels to recaps the previous plot in a lazy phoned in explanation. Not only is it a lame excuse to pat out the film, but it shows lack of effort and faith that the follow up plot could even match (or even surpass) it’s predecessor’s story. Like the movie’s saying: “Yeah, remember all the cool stuff we’ve been through? Well, gosh darn it, it was fun and maybe we those memories will ease the disappointment of whatever will happen next!” Also, Not solving mysteries in Scooby-Doo is like not having cat and mouse chase full of funny cartoon violence happen in Tom and Jerry. You know its not going to be fun to watch.
I'm sure yours will be phenomenal and better simply because you can acknowledge and articulate this. Fucking... I literally get so mad remembering this thing exists. It's so disrespectful!
That's one of the things I like about Scooby Doo, you can take and leave parts of it you like and dislike, and very rarely do they conflict. You can pick from any of the series, and they mostly mesh, some extremes excluded (I am looking at you A Pup Named Scooby Doo, and keep walking Vincent Price). You can exclude all the 'Supernatural' stories and just have fun mysteries, you can include them and have wacky supernatural hyjinx, or you can include Scrappy and hate yourself for it. Something for everyone.
2019 was the year Warner Bros. actively hated their collection of Hannah Barbara properties. Considering that in the exact same year WB went out of their to trash "Zombie Island's" legacy with this baby friendly Karen approved sequel, WB also decided to repourpose that script they had for the FNAF movie, and turn "The Banana Splits" into robotic blood hungry murdering assholes.
I SAW THAT. Wtf was that about? Were they low on drug money? Who OKAY'D that? Lol my dad used to love them and when he saw that he scratched his head and asked if it was like a parody video or a joke. Like he LITERALLY couldn't believe it.
@@ShadeNocturne Exactly. If "The Banana Splits Movie" was some sketch made for "Robot Chicken" or some fanmade parody someone made for RUclips, that'd be fine, but because its an officially licensed product, and their only justification (they even admit this in "Behind The Scenes" interviews) is "Oh the original costumes were scary. A lot of childrens TV is somehow creepy, so we made it into a horror movie." which is the shittiest excuse if you ask me. I mean people find "Barney The Dinosaur" creepy, but is that a good enough justification to turn it into a gorey slasher? (On a side note, there's a new Barney movie in the works from the director of "Get Out")
@@ShadeNocturne God I hope its not a horror movie. I don't think it will be, but still of all people to make a Barney movie why the diretor of "Get Out"?
I honestly hate that, thanks to "Happy Halloween!" (which is just a Scooby reskin of "Billy & Mandy's Jacked-Up Halloween" with what feels like a piss poor mystery thrown in at the 11th hour), this is part 2 of a trilogy. A sequel to "Curse of the 13th Ghost" (a movie that only existed to do what this movie does and debunk the paranormal of the original show, and get a ton of it's own continuity wrong to support said gasli- I mean plot) and this called back to (or at least attempted to) in "Happy Halloween!" due to it's poor excuse of a villain reveal. I found this out through ToonGrin's reviews.
The cat ladies would’ve already spent the treasure I mean how else do they modernize their house other than hocking the treasure. Besides the fact that actual pirate treasure was goods that they could actually sell not Jewels and gold coins. Because they’re A lot harder fence and normally weigh a lot more. Realistically the peppers on the plantation where moonscars treasures
Lol tbf Fred's IQ is higher than everyone elses in terms of Vans. I kind of did like his obsession with Vans, found that funny even if some of it was cliche (the GF comparison thing) but they'd never full-on parody themselves, so shamefully they let up on his sadistic elitist side. Also my voice Is WHA-? 0_o
Me: (after watching Return to Zombie Island) Okay, in retrospect, maybe the live action Scooby Doo movies aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Return to Zombie Island is the definition of a horrible Scooby Doo movie. At least the live action movies stayed true to the spirit of Scooby Doo in general.
I refuse to let it happen again without good reason. I appreciate you sticking around G, buddy. And everyone else haha I have a LOT of patient people in my life, eh?
I definitely would like to agree with his previous claims that Scooby Doo Zombie Island is a good film. Personally, I loved the movie where they got sucked into computer dipshit land, and had to face a walking blue lightning bolt as they went from China to the damn boardwalk. Good god, that movie was actually so confusing
I actually have that on DVD. Came in a double pack with Phantosaur (would've preferred Zombie Island) for $7 at a Cheap as Chips store here in Australia
I agree. Not great but I also feel it gets a rough wrap. It had STIFF competition coming off of the 3 best scooby Doo films (by some opinions) and nostalgia gives me a soft spot for it lol
Cyberchase and that alien movie were two I had as kids, so I've got a soft spot for them. I'll still freely admit that Zombie Island trashes them both, though xD

Between this movie and Curse of the Thirteenth Ghost, I'm starting to get the impression that the writers for these movies don't like the idea of actual supernatural elements in Scooby doo. Like they think it has to be fake no matter how contrived it is, or how much it craps on the original source.
This isn't the only movie sodomizing that Scooby Doo legacy, there is so much more...and by the way, it's good to see you back with another video. I missed your uncensored rage.
@@sadlobster1 Okay :) 1: Scooby-doo 2: Monsters unleashed. Poorly received at the box office, panned by critics and the only film in the live-action franchise to be nominated for a Razzie. Not to mention, putting Shaggy's head on a woman's body. 2: Scooby doo and WWE: Just for the crime of involving wrestlers, mysteries and acting, twice. 3: Shaggy and Scooby Doo get a clue: Not technically a movie, I know, but their themesong made me wish I was Deaf. I understand that every person's opinion on quality is different but not even a good franchise can have a perfect hit every time. And when you consider just how much content there is of the Scooby Doo franchise, they're lucky to get away with just three misses.
What made Zombie Island so good was how it subverted the typical Scooby Doo formula. Why would you take that and turn it into just another formulaic Scooby Doo story?
I thought it was good because they played up the Scooby Doo tropes for horror. Seriously it went from them solving what was essentially a missing person’s case, into them trying survive from a murderous cult. Its kind of like a kiddy plot remake of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
@@BigK13372 Yeah, that's what I mean. It wasn't just silly hijinks, but the atmosphere made it clear that these characters were in actual danger. Also, did anyone feel like Zombie Island took some inspiration from the game Sweet Home? Look it up, there are interesting similarities.
@@PIB2000 Not really. Then again I never really played that game. Only know of its more popular spiritual successor Biohazard, which makes some sense considering the plot of zombies in an abaddon mansion and having a plot twist villain who was initially an ally. . . . Crap. Scooby Doo made a more faithful adaption of Resident Evil then the Paul WS Anderson movies
I'd describe this as what Sticker Star did to Paper Mario. It was marketed as a something which it isn't, it would've been better on its own. Someone made the conscious decision not to match things and need to be talked to. Also the animation at 14:17 is actually terrible. This is some Sonic Boom looking scene. It feels more like a shitty cash grab off of nostalgia while bringing in new audiences ignoring everything humanly possible. In an age where Spyro, Crash, and even CTR got incredibly faithful remakes seeing such lazy departures from the source content has become an affront. It has been drawn, more to light, how lazy or little effort companies want their employees to put into the content. It forces the employees to tarnish their name as despite being talented or crappy they are held to worse due to the higher ups. This doesn't mean you can't like it. It doesn't mean you should be grateful for this movie as had this been unique it would've been better for you. Or had it simply stuck to the source it would've been better for what it is trying to be.
I agree with you and the guy who responded. This year man... oof. Also I agree on it's own MAYBE bland or forgivable. Sadly they tried to cash in where they had no business given the time and budget/animation quality. Such a shame. I would have loved a classic-looking and loving homage to zombie island. A true sequel... oh well.
Hey, Shade! It's so good to see you with such a funny and a great review! I know I'm not a Scooby Doo fan, but this was just boring to me. Anyways, by the way, I'm the one who drew the picture at 20:56, as you can tell by my RUclips name lol. You've done a good job as always. And if I had the opportunity to become a Patreon, I would be so glad to do so of how awesome you are
The ending didn't even end with them finishing the in-movie movie, so it bascially makes the whole movie plot pointless. The ending would have been soo much better if it ended with them actually making a movie instead of some vague mystery that might or might not have happened. ALSO how can Velma say everything from the first movie was all from swamp gass? I mean the orginal cat owners literaly died, so there is no way they just existed from swamp gas, especially since they first saw them... out side of the swamp. And not only that but what happened to all of the peppers? Even if the original owners died, some random pepper mogal would have probably eneded up buying the land for their pepper infrastructure, instead of some random movie producer.
It really is a pointless, hateful movie. Shame cause AT FIRST it seemed to understand its meta humor and self-critical writing style, then... they actually GET to the island. And all hope is lost.
I'm glad that I checked this movie out on the high seas, so I didn't spend money on it, cause it did very much suck, from the ill fitting music to the headless chicken story. I can agree that it doesn't taint the original, however it is unfortunately tied to it and you'll be reminded everytime you look for the original.
If only we could wipe it from the face of Google and streaming services. Then, it REALLY wouldn't be involved hardly at all with the original. Bit alas, what can be done? Oh, I know. Let's george Lucas this bitch and find the time to smash every copy.
Congratulations on 3,000 subs!! 🥳 You totally deserve more though and can’t wait till you hit 50,000 and more! Although I was excited for a review of Dead Silence, this was an awesome review as usual.
I never Heard of The sequel to Zombie Island. In my opinion the Reason why it doesn't work, is the fact that Zombie Island is very hard movie to top, or break even with. That's pretty high Horse in my opinion. Not to mention, it would've worked better, in my opinion, if they would've gone back to real island, for nostalgia's sake, and that's when something will be happening (i have no real ideas, i'm not good at movie scenarios) Nice Vid Shade. and Disc burned good : )
Ahhhh man this was great! Great job on the review bud! Like that reference there to Skooks ;) And hey, no worries about the Patreon names at the end! Was an easy mistake to make and you've been super busy lately. Don't beat yourself up over it
13:39 I’m definitely with Shade on this argument! I am so sick of seeing such heavy-handed flanderization in cartoons! 😤 Is it really too much to ask for a cartoon character to do anything without a motive that’s painfully shallow?!
Fuck, I feel old. I remember watching Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. Still have the VHS I think. (Oh, yeah, remember those pieces of plastic bricks?) And I watched a few minutes of this and... Oh, fucking Christ. This looks bad. It doesn't follow ANYTHING from the original film. I don't even know when this takes place, but you know what? Doesn't even matter! It actively takes a shit on the original film-fuck it. Just watch Zombie Island again. Not this half-assed rehash. Because that's what it really is.
10:22 wait. Doctor Fisichella from The Princess and the Frog? I mean, the movie IS set in New Orleans and The Princess and the Frog WOULD have happened BEFORE the events of Zombie Island but... Am I the only one seeing this and not feeling the slightest bit unsure here?
Facilier got dragged into hell iirc, but that character design of the lanky man with a top hat and cane could also be a reference to Papa Ghede or Baron Samedi, who are both figures in Haitian voodoo lore.
It always sucks when a sequel doesn't even try to be entertaining, like if it's bad or cheesy, then I can jab at it for fun and riff on it. I hope you get a better movie for the next review.
Indeed mate. Indeed. And thanks, I might at some point. I feel people enjoy this kinda style of tearing into stuff more, though I will try to be more balanced since this time I just needed to hurt it.... badly... because it hurt me >:( But yeah, I will definently cover some movies I like asap. :)
@@ShadeNocturne I enjoyed watching you rip this movie a collective new one, but yeah, balance is important. Bartok the Magnificent is good, I think you might like it. Lost Boys and The Crow are two of my favorite horror films if you want to review a horror film. The ending of you burning and burying the cursed flick was funny as well. Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School (To me at least) Is also pretty good since I grew up watching it as a kid. I hope you had a Happy Halloween. :3
Making a sequel to On Zombie Island pretty much a shitty remake is a HUGE MISTAKE. If they made it something different than the same zombies at least we would be able to give it some credit if it’s good.
Loved the reviews as always Shade! Congrats on 3K Subs and hope you keep getting more! Your content is adorable and your voice gets me all the damn time from how deep it is but its also adorable from this giddy and over exciting moments you tend to have
Oh, guess what? Warner Bros just announced a Blu Ray release of Zombie Island but it's getting saddled a double feature with this dumpster fire attached to it
Yeah I mean it almost feels like they WEREN'T on zombie island sometimes. I mean idk if that helps or hurts it cause it's so boring... but yeah... why does this exist.
This movie’s very existence makes me mad. I wouldn’t mind this so much except that it’s FRIGGIN Zombie Island, the Citizen Kane of Scooby-Doo movies! 13 ghosts always had a divisive fanbase, you either love it or hate it and Velma being a skeptic in that movie at least had the excuse of “she wasn’t there when it happened” but here...it’s just a colossal mess. Also, there was a sequel to Zombie Island, it’s called Witch’s Ghost and it is fantastic!
A question I have is did the screenplay writers, animators, cast, etc; any of them AT LEAST watch the original Zombie Island Movie before crafting this INSAULTING cash grab?
Meme? *laughs and looks around* S-shaggy's power isn't a meme... it is canon. Shaggy is god confirmed. I confirmed it. Me. Tell everyone. They won't care but tell them XD Idk I'm being stupid. I do love them memes tho. Relevant or not I love them XD
Return to Zombie Island, as a sequel, would be like if Batman (1989) was immediately followed by Batman And Robin, or if X-Men (2000) was immediately followed by X-Men Origins; Wolverine, or if Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) was immediately followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3!
@@ShadeNocturne Well, don’t worry! 😉 Once my animation career takes off, I’ve added “making a proper follow-up to Zombie Island” to my cinematic bucket-list. I already have an idea in the works, right now! 😎 I don’t want to spoil anything, but it mostly centers around Velma.
I'm so glad I didn't see that Scooby Doo zombie island sequel because from the reviews I've seen online i would've been pissed off to no end, the movie is so disrespectful to the OG that everyone died

They should have made a new Scooby Doo movie that is amazing instead of making a sequel where they go to.... Zombie Island..... Lighting doesn’t strike twice most of the time.
These throwback Scooby movies are basically we're gonna shit all over your childhood and make you feel old by making you remember the original which is much better than our piece of shit (Side Note: God forbid they better not fuck with Ghoul School there will be "blood" if they do)

Yeah i feel the same way about this movie too, this movie was such a pile of shit it shouldn't even be called return to zombie island because there were no zombies in this movie, their were just actors why the fuck did they call it return to zombie island, if the zombies are not in the movie, this was just a terrible sequel to the original film.
Agreed. I get trying new stuff but ultimately they just changed and tried to cram the new scooby Doo lore in with the old/edgier and it just didn't work. Sad.
Original Zombie Island: THE best Scooby-Doo Movie of all time. Return to Zombie Island: A terrible, pandering cash-grab on nostalgia and a waste of time with no effort made and felt so empty.
True me... I felt it, too. Sorry it took so long. Got a new schedule and life stuff but I found a way to work in the time and I am trying to post more again :) yall have been so patient it's unreal
I remember that day on your Discord server when we were watching Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (I'm Ariel Nunez). I loved that movie because of the dope soundtrack and the scary scenes. This movie is an offense to that awesome movie.
To me, Scooby-Doo nowadays is more of an empty husk of a franchise that has been milked for all its worth. This movie pretty much proves that without question, and that's coming from someone who also loved Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island as a kid (still love it today). Hell, I still can't believe they brought Elvira, THE mistress of the dark herself, into this mess of a film. Very glad to see you back doing reviews, Shade!
I liked mystery incorporated the show, but even that gets diddled movie-wise I hear (no comment cause idk fully) but yeah. I see that. Also thanks man, so glad you're still here
It’s Warner Bros. they are the ones who do the Scooby-Doo VOD and movies now but Hanna-Barbera is a in name only of Warner Bros. Animation. So you can blame WB Animation for making this.
it's like the creators of this movie saw the original, had this mind blowing idea and began to r*** the original movie and said "fuck it! this will be better!". that's how Return came to be: an abomination.
I actually watched the original Zombie Island film last night. Still great as ever. This movie....not so much. At least I can add it to my list of movies' I should avoid.
That Black werecat was probably the only highlight for me Just a lil hope that there's still something supernatural while the rest is retcon, and I like that they left it alone cuz now it's a mystery and we all get to come up with whatever theory we want
Fair enough. Even if they do it just to tie it all together, I'll give it to em. Shame about not getting to see the TRUE zombies and such from the first movie. Wish I could have seen some alternate universe version of this. Wonder what would have been.
Ok, this comment is going to be a big one, but I really have to say this: 1. This movie is a disappointment and a disgrace to the original Growing up, this was one of my favorite movies, yes it gave me nightmares, but this movie was a childhood to all 80s and 90s kids. Back in 2019, I saw the trailer and hoped we'll finally get to know more about the Moonscar island, the Cat God cult and all other mysteries. But when I saw how freaking goofy the zombies look like, I knew the movie will just spit in the face of the original movie. The only good thing about this movie is the scene where we learn that one of the werecats is real, and we wonder who that might be. My theory was that it could be Beau who tried to learn more about the Cat God cult and got cursed, or maybe even Cat God himself trying to revive his worshipers or start a new cult, but of course, this wreck of a film did not explain even the half of it and let us all puke in disbelief and horror. 2. The characters appear so indifferent and sceptical to the past events. At 13:02 it appears that Scooby is the only character who has any actual sort of PTSD from the ecounter in the first movie. Freaking sceptic Velma, the one who literally said that the zombies can finally rest in peace in the first movie. Personally, if I were one of the characters, I would get a PTSD attack anytime somebody mentions pirates, cats, treasure, zombies or island. Seeing the actors dressed as the villains would probably make them hysterical, since no, you can't just simply forget a werecat who tried to drain your life force. And what's with changing the past? The gang were adults in the original movie, and now they are teenagers again? Why? Are they scared that kids won't like the main cast being adults? 3. The movie ending is quick and lazy. The director guy steals all the treasure to himself and leaves, the gang learned nothing and everything is right with the world. The end of the first movie was more epic, with just pure dumb luck, they survived the fate of many who fell victims to the werecats and literally broke the curse of the entire island which was one huge mass grave. This movie had potential to answer all the unanswered questions from the first one, but they refused to do it by literally going against the idea of the original movie which was created to break the old formula, they just made it into what could've been if the creators did not want real monsters.
I had noticed he was designed after that one. Funny how Alan Smitty can apparently get ALL the accurate details for his research (before butchering it) but he dug up that obscure shit for one of his main costumes. They could have easily built of off it For example they return to look for the camera they lost They face opposition from a group Then they find it solve a mystery about said group and release the footage The world learns supernatural forces exist then the fallout and consequences of that are focused on. The world changes It practically writes itself and could change and add some world building to the series for the better. Odds are word would get out at some point with all the adventures and occurrences they've been through so, they might as well lean into it for the benefit of the story.

@@ShadeNocturne this movie is NOT canon
Witch is worse: Return to Zombie Island or The Mindy/Velma Project?
Velma... dear, the zombies aren't robots and there is no rational realization for the cat creatures.
@@electrobob992 did they get bad writers for this?
Yep

Rogue AI?
It was a computer virus designed a buy a programmer who really likes baseball
Should we go check it out?"
Chief: "Ignore it."
Officer: "But... Why?"
Chief: "We're small town cops with a small budget that barely gets us by while city cops in Gotham and Metropolis with billions of dollars worth of equipment can't even handle this crap without a Super." "Just ignore it till it solves itself or it becomes a big enough problem to attract a guy in tights" "Trying anything on our own would be suicide"
Officer: "Oh. We could try those hippies with the talking dog? They have a good track record and all we have to do is fake a town festival with free food to attract their attention."
Chief: "Now that's why I hired you." "I'll go talk to the mayor."

@@CybersoxK.T The question is...why
I actually hated this movie so much that I contacted it's screenwriter to complain. He told me that he actually hates his own film as much as we do, and he was forced by the studio to make it like this because they insisted that the point of Scooby-Doo was to teach kids that monsters weren't real and there was nothing to be afraid of. He also told me he would pass on my complaints to the studio executive that said that.
Well at least we have answers for why now 😅
Saying that monsters and other supernatural things don't exist in Scooby-Doo makes no sense.
Moral of the story: unchecked nostalgia is the downfall of humanity and we all should moderate it instead of whole heartedly embrace it.
And I always believed in that. *sigh* nobody likes nostalgia gladses until they get a prescription pair on em. Then they make mistakes like mine.

Anyway yeah I really appreciate the comment buddy
I'm not ashamed to admit I cackled like a mad scientist when you burned the DVD.
Haha us mad peeps need to stick together. I didn't want it in my house
No.
Return to Zombie Island, the movie we neither wanted nor needed

*I AM NOT MAKING THAT PART UP SWEAR TO GOD*
As a story writer who’s on the progress of writing a book series, I find it completely stupid for sequels to recaps the previous plot in a lazy phoned in explanation.
Not only is it a lame excuse to pat out the film, but it shows lack of effort and faith that the follow up plot could even match (or even surpass) it’s predecessor’s story.
Like the movie’s saying: “Yeah, remember all the cool stuff we’ve been through? Well, gosh darn it, it was fun and maybe we those memories will ease the disappointment of whatever will happen next!”

What made Zombie Island so good was how it subverted the typical Scooby Doo formula. Why would you take that and turn it into just another formulaic Scooby Doo story?
I thought it was good because they played up the Scooby Doo tropes for horror.

Everything that you have explained about this movie almost perfectly mirrors my exact feelings towards this movie as well. I completely agree
A true sequel... oh well.

@@ShadeNocturne Oh yeah, just collect every copy and make a new landfill out of them, because it doesn't deserve to exist.
I'd watch the 13 Ghosts Of Scooby-Doo or Shaggy & Scooby Get A Clue over this anyday. Would I watch Velma over this? You tell me.
Congratulations on 3,000 subs!! 🥳 You totally deserve more though and can’t wait till you hit 50,000 and more! Although I was excited for a review of Dead Silence, this was an awesome review as usual.
Wow... I can't even imagine hitting that goal 0_o I would be catatonic with suprise/gratefulness
I never Heard of The sequel to Zombie Island. In my opinion the Reason why it doesn't work, is the fact that Zombie Island is very hard movie to top, or break even with. That's pretty high Horse in my opinion. Not to mention, it would've worked better, in my opinion, if they would've gone back to real island, for nostalgia's sake, and that's when something will be happening (i have no real ideas, i'm not good at movie scenarios)
Nice Vid Shade. and Disc burned good : )
Lol thanks mate. And I agree. This movie felt empty. Like a... sort of a lie, basically.
*Burn baby burn it's a disc-burn inferno~*
Ahhhh man this was great! Great job on the review bud! Like that reference there to Skooks ;)
And hey, no worries about the Patreon names at the end! Was an easy mistake to make and you've been super busy lately. Don't beat yourself up over it

@@ShadeNocturne No worries at all buddy! You deserve it!!
Glad to hear that cause we aren't going anywhere! >:P

I’m definitely with Shade on this argument! I am so sick of seeing such heavy-handed flanderization in cartoons! 😤
Is it really too much to ask for a cartoon character to do anything without a motive that’s painfully shallow?!

YESSS SHADE UPLOADED
hope your doin good broski💙
You as well
We all know the werecats/cat-people were actual supernatural beings.
WE FOUND EM, WE FOUND HIS BODY! AND IT IS SCURRY
It always sucks when a sequel doesn't even try to be entertaining, like if it's bad or cheesy, then I can jab at it for fun and riff on it.
I hope you get a better movie for the next review.
Indeed mate. Indeed.
And thanks, I might at some point. I feel people enjoy this kinda style of tearing into stuff more, though I will try to be more balanced since this time I just needed to hurt it.... badly... because it hurt me >:(
But yeah, I will definently cover some movies I like asap.
Your content is adorable and your voice gets me all the damn time from how deep it is but its also adorable from this giddy and over exciting moments you tend to have
Lol wow that is a new way of describing my stuff
@@ShadeNocturne Anytime dragon boy :3
Oh, guess what? Warner Bros just announced a Blu Ray release of Zombie Island but it's getting saddled a double feature with this dumpster fire attached to it
This movie hurt my soul, I never want to see it again
I personally consider this movie not canon, tbh.
The lack of a plant in one of the flash backs, a zombie location being different.
Lol that ending sentence. I couldn't have said it better myself
This was a freaking travesty like Curse Of The 13th Ghost was. Nothing but nostalgia bait that shits on the original
Right?! Like Why? *WHY* do these currently working movie writers HATE the products their working on? THEN DON'T WRITE FOR IT, OMG?!
@@ShadeNocturne IKR?! And this one hurts the most out of the two!
I remember when this came out last year I hated it so much that I make my own version of a sequel to zombie Island as an audiobook
A question I have is did the screenplay writers, animators, cast, etc; any of them AT LEAST watch the original Zombie Island Movie before crafting this INSAULTING cash grab?
My god, someone get the Scooby snacks. We need it to get through this.
I'll take shaggy's. His have you waking up in a pile of cheeto dust and soda cans. The perfect remedy for this.
@@ShadeNocturne But would it mean you’d absorb some of his power by eating his snacks? Is that meme relevant anymore? I don’t know.
Meme?
*laughs and looks around*
S-shaggy's power isn't a meme... it is canon.
Christ it hurts worse that you're. It just being humerous... you're fucking RIGHT. God... that just hurts. Thus movie hurts XD

Well, don’t worry! 😉
Once my animation career takes off, I’ve added “making a proper follow-up to Zombie Island” to my cinematic bucket-list.
I already have an idea in the works, right now!
😎
I don’t want to spoil anything, but it mostly centers around Velma.
I'm so glad I didn't see that Scooby Doo zombie island sequel because from the reviews I've seen online i would've been pissed off to no end, the movie is so disrespectful to the OG that everyone died

I don’t mean to be gross, but…

After what you did to Cool Cat, you could have just lit him on fire. LOL
I'm usually a cat person, but the more I listen to Shade here, the more I think he's my spirit animal... Well, either that or a parallel universe version of me, but what are the chances of that?
A spirit animal?!? I'M A GHOST? AHHHHH
lol I kid. I'm sincerely flattered btw
They should have made a new Scooby Doo movie that is amazing instead of making a sequel where they go to.... Zombie Island..... Lighting doesn’t strike twice most of the time.
This. This entirely
These throwback Scooby movies are basically we're gonna shit all over your childhood and make you feel old by making you remember the original which is much better than our piece of shit
(Side Note: God forbid they better not fuck with Ghoul School there will be "blood" if they do)
I never knew that they Made a sequel to Scooby Doo on Zombie Island!
Oh God those were the Good Old Days where Animation was Top Quality, and Shit made Sense.
No.

Nice to see another video from Shade. You always help me forget about my depression for a short time. Hope your good.

4:02 I like how shaggy and scooby are getting drain despite Lisa saying "we didn't make dolls of those dummies, waste of wax."
I refuse to accept that this lame movie, trying retcon a classic like Zombie Island just for the sake of nostalgia bait, is Canon.
Me either. Agreed HARD
Yeah definitely not canon especially with Velma’s crazy behaviour
Finally you are back
Those three months felt like three years
Hey Ariel!
Glad to hear from you
To me, Scooby-Doo nowadays is more of an empty husk of a franchise that has been milked for all its worth.
I see that.
Also thanks man, so glad you're still here
@@ShadeNocturne You're very welcome, my dragon chum. 🙂
Here’s a scientific fact: Scooby Doo has gone downhill ever since Be Cool happened!
I would say after Witch's Ghost
Be Cool Scooby-Doo looks horrendous
at least be cool was funny.
@ Now that the horrendous Velma exists, I have to agree there.
At this point, Hanna-Barbera didn't care anymore. They treat Scooby-Doo and Mystery Inc. like it's their own Power Rangers.
It’s Warner Bros. they are the ones who do the Scooby-Doo VOD and movies now but Hanna-Barbera is a in name only of Warner Bros. Animation. So you can blame WB Animation for making this.
Wow, you really are back! I missed your videos so much.
I'm... so flattered you do
it's like the creators of this movie saw the original, had this mind blowing idea
and began to r*** the original movie and said "fuck it! this will be better!".
that's how Return came to be: an abomination.
Lmfao i love the thumbnail.
Also welcome back shade :)
Thanks haha and glad to be back, thanks for staying :)
My artist @ISSAC_ART is amazeballs
I actually watched the original Zombie Island film last night. Still great as ever. This movie....not so much. At least I can add it to my list of movies' I should avoid.
That Black werecat was probably the only highlight for me
Just a lil hope that there's still something supernatural while the rest is retcon, and I like that they left it alone cuz now it's a mystery and we all get to come up with whatever theory we want
Fair enough. Even if they do it just to tie it all together, I'll give it to em.
Shame about not getting to see the TRUE zombies and such from the first movie. Wish I could have seen some alternate universe version of this. Wonder what would have been.
Ok, this comment is going to be a big one, but I really have to say this:
1. This movie is a disappointment and a disgrace to the original
Growing up, this was one of my favorite movies, yes it gave me nightmares, but this movie was a childhood to all 80s and 90s kids.
This sequel was a mistake. It should've left the original as stand alone adventure.
this was the best thing to wake up to on Halloween ngl, thanks for making my day.
Thanks for making mine just now
Just realized that the first zombie you see is the zombie from the episode with the witch and zombie in the classic series.
I had noticed he was designed after that one. Funny how Alan Smitty can apparently get ALL the accurate details for his research (before butchering it) but he dug up that obscure shit for one of his main costumes.
Mr. Alan smitty sir... than goodness you're retired... with your stolen treasure but nonetheless, good

And there is more but some is unpublished, older or other reasons.
They could have easily built of off it
For example they return to look for the camera they lost
They face opposition from a group
Then they find it solve a mystery about said group and release the footage
The world learns supernatural forces exist then the fallout and consequences of that are focused on.
The world changes
It practically writes itself and could change and add some world building to the series for the better.
Odds are word would get out at some point with all the adventures and occurrences they've been through so, they might as well lean into it for the benefit of the story.
YES. THIS. PERFECT
The camera so could have been the point of returning. Like JUST GIVE US A DIRECT SEQUEL AND MAKE IT SPOOPY. PLEASE
Smh wasted potential...
@@ShadeNocturne thanks, I also get/understand your pain iv'e watched hacks destroy alot of stuff i liked over the years (I have an obsessive attachment to stuff i like so it's worse)
as a result iv'e learned exactly what they did wrong and the larger context and mechanics of storytelling in my spare time
,
All the while slowly realizing with each passing thing or botched story that even if i did fix it or make a half decent thing odds are as soon as i pass too or they get their hands on it somehow
They'll destroy that too
it's all just a larger symptom of how absurdly pointless our mortal existence is.
(good chunks of it are often done deliberately if not all some people just get sick kicks out off flipping off an art form it is easier to destroy than it is to create after all)
That acquires effort which they don't care about and want a quick buck 💵
It's sad when they butcher a beloved series like Scooby. They had one job to not screw it and they did.....badly.
