    What an interesting title for the video since everyone should know that the top of the flange should be between 1/4" and 3/8" above the finished floor...which basically means the flange sits on top the finished floor. In this video he cuts the tile away from the flange when really it's supposed to be underneath it.

      That’s the first thing I noticed and what you said is the proper procedure. My dad was a pipe fitter and I’m a subcontractor myself, seen a few jobs where it was done this way and it had rotted the subfloor from water leaking around the drain after each flush.

    • @notsure103
      @notsure103 5 лет назад +3

      He is absolutely correct. Choose says the flange go on top of the finished surface. It should be 1/4 to 1/2 above. Anyone disagreeing is a hack. Read code. Learn your trade.

    • @BaMFusco
      @BaMFusco 3 года назад

      But how do you get the flange to stick above the finished tile? (I’m about to rule my bathroom so that’s why I’m asking)
      If the tile is put down and it’s flush with the flange how the heck do you make the flange higher than the tile? I don’t get it. And when you say flange that’s the blue circle around the drain in the video right?

    There's a brand new invention out that eliminates the need to cut a circular cut in the tiles around the flange. It's called the Toilet Flange Tile Guide, and it's pretty amazing. Saves a ton of time, plus it forms a mechanical bond around the flange sealing and protecting that area from future water damage like was never before provided. Awesome invention. Maybe you could do a new video using it?

    I searched for this video to get answers and you have helped me a lot as well as the comments given below.
    What do you think about the flange being at least 1/4" above the tiles? It makes sense so there is tight bond between the ring wax and the tiles surface ?

    Remove the flange or get a plumber to do it if its cast iron leaded to an iron pipe. Tile, then have a plumber put in the flange with oakum n lead so it sits on top of the tile..or use a twist and set flange. The toilet flange should sit on top of the finished floor.

  • @Notesens

    how did you decide what to set the compass at while marking that arc? makes no sense. You didnt show yourself putting it on the centre of the stick and moving it to length by eye (if that's what you did) or measuring the gap

    • @bobsmith8094
      @bobsmith8094 5 лет назад

      xFracture you’ll want to give yourself about a quarter inch or greater gap when installing tile around any type of edge as concrete expands and contracts thus shifting tile, if your tile is tight against say a wall’s floor plate, it will eventually buckle or crack your tile. Also, you’ll want your toilet flange sitting atop your new floor, not beside like he does here.👍🏽

      Spacers are for amateurs. Most tiles aren’t even the same size so if you used spacers for every tile the lines would eventually be off. You need a combination of spacers for some areas plus the eye to make sure everything stays straight.
      It’s not a like a level where if it says level than its good

    decent tile work for as author calls "primitive " floor look (3:47). Flange ,however ,looks to be new and thus why not remove the flange and reinsert over new tile, not under it, so it can be at 'code' height on top of tile to allow toilet flange to recess INTO IT for good seal ? (there are wax and vinyl toilet seals that are extra thick , more than 1 ", if proper flange height is not possible but a no-leak future is NOT as certain).
    PS. Researching for all parts of tile install is easier than making repairs later . Google and UTUBE are ' fountains' of info .

      the flange is placed on top of finished floor. (if there was no tile just 1/16 " vinyl flooring placed over concrete would you chisel out the concrete ? NO .
      I am not a plumber but every plumber I know gives this as the how to do it . (if the flange does not rise a 1/4" at least above finished floor the toilet seal ring cannot do it' s function )
      PS. checkout my video on the reinvented wheel (it's not square, MORON ?)

  • @tellmesomething2go
    @tellmesomething2go 6 лет назад

    Flange height. Look at the thickness of the wax ring. It`s about one-half inch. Then look at the recess, on the bottom of a toilet bowl. That wax ring has to go between the top of the flange, and the depth of the recess. About one-half inch. Flange too high, wax ring squishes out too much. Flange too low, not a good seal. I always try to dry fit the bowl, after the mud sets for awhile. This way, your more likely to a get a flatter base, for the toilet to rest on, otherwise you can get a rocker. If the flange is above the tile, it may be a little too high. A lot of these jobs vary, so should each application.

    • @tellmesomething2go
      @tellmesomething2go 6 лет назад

      check each application.

    • @tellmesomething2go

    Why is everyone trying to cut a perfect hole around the toilet flange when the toilet will cover most of that up? All you need is for the sides to be tight with a rectangle.

    The man that taught me the business said that if I ever use spacers on the floor I was fired never did never will spacers are four walls so they don't sag you stay on your line and that's it if you need to use spacers go to McDonald's and flip burgers

    • @resplendentpeace
      @resplendentpeace 6 лет назад +2

      The man taught you to do a half-assed tile job. I have to tile my own bathroom because of people just like you. You show me a picture of how you stayed "on your line" without spacers. You're saving time and money at the expense of quality and that's why it's so hard for homeowners to find a decent contractor. You can do it in a fraction of the time, but my work is better because I care about quality and you don't. And then you come on here with your self-righteous attitude. Go flip your own burgers. And what's wrong with working at McDonald's anyway? They take their job at least as seriously as you do.
