Josh has some of the best “how-to” home improvement/construction videos on RUclips. He knows his trade, succinctly and informatively, gets to the point and while he has plenty of fun personality…he doesn’t annoy the crap out of his viewers with worthless, silly shtick. Thanks Josh!
Direct to the point, without joking around.
Thank you! That is how I like to see videos as well. Be sure to stay tuned for more!
This is one of those videos where I must take the time to thank you for your detailed steps. I just finished installing hexagon tiles in my bathroom. I had to do some sanding to level some high spots before placing the cement board, but I followed each of your steps, and I was able to get it done. The floors look great! Thank you!!!
The Excellent Laborer is the best. Short, clear videos, with time saving tips only a pro can give you.
Thank you Harold! I enjoy making videos to share my knowledge. Take care!
I love this guy I like the way he explains every step. He answered a lot of questions I had. I used to install tile 30 years ago and a lot of tile installation have changed since then so after watching his videos I feel very confident about tiling my own shower.
That was an awesome video, I have an 8x5 bathroom that needs to be redone and you have given me the confidence to do so. Thank you again!
Just in time, Bro! 😎 I’ll be on this project Friday night. 🤪 Thanks! Always delivered in understandable casual dialogue. 👍
Excellent! I’m sure my videos are always in time for your projects but I’m glad this one was. Good luck on your project Friday night. Let me know how it goes!
By far the best video!! So descriptive, it’s foolproof!! Thanks
Thanks!
Thanks for the support!
I watched your video on siding installation and now this one and I can say for someone who has no handy man skills you make it very easy to understand. Thank you!!
I fellow your video step by step and i does our bathroom as well!! Very useful for beginners and save lots of the money!! Thank you so much for your video!!!
Thank you! Another great video!
You normally wanna trowel the thinset in the shortest direction of the tile so air gaps dont form.
What about square tiles?
Excellent work with excellent explanation
Thank you
This was a great video and very informative.
Great video, many tips I've never seen before!
I bought some nice marble tiles and made a really nice looking pad for underneath my cast iron enameled parlor gas stove. Turned out really nice. I will be re-doing 2 of my bathroom floors so this video is really helpful to do a larger area. Thanks
Excellent video
Inifinite gratitude for your help! And smile! :D
question did you break off the spacers for the goute joints join how do you get them out? and how soon do you remove the thanks for the awesome video jim
Thanks: very helpful!
man your videos are awesome, keep 'em coming!
I really enjoyed watching you in this video. You are very good at explaining the step and u make it look easy, and not as hard as people may think it is. I thank you for this video it really help me so much. This is exactly what I needed to see because I’m going to be doing this to our bathroom walls and floor. And I don’t think of the cement board, I liked that. So u can’t use the bathroom for 24 hours after u put the thin set down. Is that correct? If so ugh there’s only one bathroom here lol well this is gong to be interesting to see 😂😂
Great video! Have you ever installed the Schluter ditra system? As an architect I've spec'd it for projects, but haven't installed it myself. I'd like to use the ditra heat system in our master bathrooms for the house we are currently building but I'm not a fan of installing tile myself.
I like the spin doctor leveling system.
Nice
great video. You save people a lot of money
Thank you Russell! I love helping people. Take care!
Even though with all the carhartt you did a great job on your floor. Boss level.
Thanks for the video. Getting ready to tile my first bathroom. I was gonna use Ditra, but felt like the CB would be easier for a first timer. Glad to see that CB is still used, so I think I will go with it.
I enjoy watching your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them.
Just wondering about how much in material did it cost for your shower and floor install? My bath is a little bigger 6x 14just trying to get an idea cost. I was thinking using similar material as your project.
Thanks Again
Everything you do is what I do and I'm not even a tile professional...but I love perfection....even the tools safety first and patience....
Hey Josh, thank you for the video very well explained quick question I am putting a toilet in my bedroom, can I run a vent thru the side of the house or does it have to be thru the roof. I really like watching your vids thank you again and have a great day!
Great video ! Thanks !
You are welcome. I’m glad I could help!
Thanks for your videos! You are an amazing teacher. You really explain in detail.
You are welcome! I like to help as much as possible. Thanks for watching and good luck with your project!
@@TheExcellentLaborer just bought a home and have massive project coming way. Will be buying some of the products your recommended in your videos
Saludes amiguito desde Costa Rica. Buen trabajo
Good video! As for the tiles cracking easily with the grinder, I found that cutting from the backside of the tile caused a lot less splitting.
Thanks Steve. I appreciate your input. Knowledge sharing is the key to learning the best techniques. Take care!
Big respect
Thank you!
Thanks great videos 👍👍👍
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
Another great job bro
I appreciate that! I hope you are doing well!
So many things about this video throw me off but that Home Depot pouch is top notch.
Sick ass video broski!!
Great information. Thanks for not cutting any corners and being detailed. #learningtogether
You are welcome. Appreciate you watching my contact. Good luck with your tile work!
Very good tutorial.
Thank you!
Would this be the same process for mosaic tile?
Do you want the notch lines on the floor and back of the tile running the same direction, opposite direction, or does it not matter?
Awesome work brotha!
Thank you Jon!
I’m doing my bathroom tomorrow, I went with the same spacing/leveling system you went with. They had all kinds of good reviews on it. You have really helped with my house build that’s for sure! Thanks man glad you made these videos
I need your advice please. I have a Slab floor in my bathroom and it’s drops one inch from one side to the another. Approximately 10 feet by 5 feet. Should I start putting tile on low side or on high side? Or I should use self leveling first? Thank you!
Great video, would love a video to show how to install heating mat under tile flooring ? 19:27
good job
Thank you!
Damn this young man is awesome
in this video, did you use the same thinsets on the plywood and on top of the durock and which (modified or unmodifed)?
Better to use the membrane instead of cement board?
Hello from Greece!!! Bery vice and useful videos....but how to make the tiles with incline, so the water drain in one spot?? ( Because it's bathroom)
Awesome vid, How many cases did you use?
Do you have a video on how to install cement board on a shower that has a hot mopped pan. Need to know how far down to take my cement board. Thanks!
💖💖
Scrape away about a quarter of an inch of Thinset in between tile before installing adjacent one to prevent Thinset from oozing out.
Was the 100 percent silicone clear or colored? I’m not sure if can even be colored. I’m only asking because I didn’t know if that was a thing or if it can be painted etc.
Hi you could have drill the water pipe locations then cut the cement board and the tiles then install
A fantastic guy! thanks for the videos. regarding tiles, why not cutting with a diamond blade. notch and crack them. its easy and clean. what's your thoughts?
Thanks, Sean! Yes, you can do that. I actually used to do that all the time. Good luck with your project!
Zac Efron teaches tiling
When it comes to that kind of tiles, 12x24, I go by the 1/3 offset pattern.
1/3 off set is good too. Thanks for watching!
What can be done first: the tile floor or the wall tile?
I hammered the like button. Had to get a new phone..
Thank you for hammering the like button!
Do you have a preference from cement board or hardi backer? I've used hardi backer most of the time. Also making sure the sub surface is thick enough to be able to use 1/4" material otherwise 1/2". Putting thinset is so important as well. I've used a hudson sprayer on the back of the floor material to help it not suck all the moisture out so quick for getting all the screws in and able to put in two full sheets as well. Thank you for such a great job and description.
I only have used hardi backer when I was working for a guy modeling a house. Other than that I have always used CB. I am most comfortable using it over anything else. I’d like to try Ditra at some point. Yes a strong subfloor is a must for any type of tile floor backer. I can’t wait to finish all this tile in this house 😅. Thanks for stopping by David!
@@TheExcellentLaborer I use the Ditra product once. It seems like a lot more work. My brother in law who owns the kitchen bathroom remodeling company for over 35 years uses that basically on all the jobs they do. Just like the schluter system. I have always loved just doing the acrylic shower pans and then tile on the walls. But yes when you get used to using a product like you said you just stick with it but you always still do the right steps as needed.
As long as you keep showing work I will keep following. I enjoy it so much and learn things each time. I'm proud of all the work you do and the time you take to share it all with others.
Do you always have to put thinset down before you put down the cement board or can you install the cement board directly onto the subfloor without thinset?
I’m waiting on this answer 😅
Me too 😂. I will appreciate if someone give an answer by tomorrow
Easier way to mark center of a square (or rectangle) is to draw two diagonal lines from oposing corners, their intersection will be the exact center. Way easier and more accurate than measuring the sides, dividing by two, and marking.
The wooden floor should be primed before laying the cement board.
17:10
Note that 12x24 in tiles aren’t dead-on these dims.
I wasted 2 tiles before I realized I should measure 11-13/16 to cut in half.
Your thin set lines direction on tiles are opposite of thin set on floor the will trap air under the tile
how come you did not waterproof the cement board before tiling? I thought this was impt? btw i am an amateur trying to do a bathroom rehab just dont wanna make a big mistake
I wish I work with you
Man i have hard time learning this cuts perfectly. Hopefully this vid helps
Take your time and cutting tile. What is a little practice you will have a good looking cuts in no time. Thanks for watching!
@@TheExcellentLaborer thanks Josh hopefully I’ll improve. Again it’s all thanks to your instructions
Ok, so you can lay ceramic tile on the cement board without the orange waterproof layer?
Yes
It’s one or the other. They are both for water proofing, just two different systems. People swear by cement board, others swear by the orange. To each their own
How much does it cost a job like this?
Would I still need to lay cement board over a concrete floor?
I’ll lay tile directly on concrete floor. I hope that helps!
Your 7.25 circ saw blade is also the same size as a toilet flange 🔑
What size notch is your trowel?
For 12x24 tiles (large format), from what I've read you're supposed to use a 1/2" square notched trowel.
@@benharrison5816 I ended up using a 3/8" trowel.
I don’t understand the use of the tile spacers someone please explain
The spacers give a gap between the tiles to allow grout to squeeze in between. If you have the tiles too close, there is not enough room for the grout to fit. Then you cannot get a good seal between the tiles. Also, if the tiles were touching each other, when they shift, they could ship. I hope that helps!
I was told with the 24x12 use a 33% off set 8" off set
If you're not going to use a tile leveling system like he did, then most definitely use a 1/3 pattern. Helps reduce "lippage".
Why are you using 3/8 trowel ? I have always bee told 1/2 for that size tile?
It’s a 1/4” notched trowel as mentioned in the video. Hope that helps!
If the floor is concrete, would you still lay cement board before tile?
I used Schluter Ditra between my slab and tile. Helps protect the tile from cracking if there's any shifting or cracking of the foundation.
@@JasonB-0274 lol, literally just finished lying ditra down, finishined the shower walls. Excited to see this through
@dragonrider9051 Same as you except a couple of days ago, lol. Getting ready to mix up some all set now so I can start working on laying tile over the ditra.
Shluter membrane the best way much easyer Faster plus its anti fracture for the same price cement board no way better product now
why not put the Redguard water proofing product down on top of the Hardie board. It costs about $75 a gallon I'm guessing is why people dont use it.
Compass
Oh, its better to mix your grout by hand.
At 20 minutes 16 seconds you literally put down the tile and said make sure the notch is going the same direction and they weren't. Lol. And you really love that double quarter inch trowel method, substrate and back of tile. Half by half notch trowel is what you typically use with a 12x24, you also forgot the key in the substrate.
Was my thoughts also....
as for the part where he says "...notch is going the same direction..." on the back butter, and then placed it down opposite direction on floor, he is saying too make sure the back buttering notches are all in the same direction on the tile itself. He wasn't talking about matching the tile back buttering notches up with the floor notches.
@@robwaters9820 well whatever he was talking about he set the tile down, the substrate was directional one way and the tile was directional the other way so he crossed them. Watch the video again
Very old method.
Wrong your toilet flange should be sitting on top your tile floor!!
It is elevated above the tile. It’s probably hard to see it at the angle of the camera. I hope that helps!
Brave still sporting that fascist carhart. I guess some people dont mind fascism.
You need to join the rest of the world and go metric.
Excellent video
Thanks!
You are welcome Colin!
