Excellent refresher for those of us who don’t do this often. Thanks for talking the time to put it together. Straight to the point. No distracting music. Great job!
This is one of those videos where I must take the time to thank you for your detailed steps. I just finished installing hexagon tiles in my bathroom. I had to do some sanding to level some high spots before placing the cement board, but I followed each of your steps, and I was able to get it done. The floors look great! Thank you!!!
Josh has some of the best “how-to” home improvement/construction videos on RUclips. He knows his trade, succinctly and informatively, gets to the point and while he has plenty of fun personality…he doesn’t annoy the crap out of his viewers with worthless, silly shtick. Thanks Josh!
Excellent! I’m sure my videos are always in time for your projects but I’m glad this one was. Good luck on your project Friday night. Let me know how it goes!
I love this guy I like the way he explains every step. He answered a lot of questions I had. I used to install tile 30 years ago and a lot of tile installation have changed since then so after watching his videos I feel very confident about tiling my own shower.
Good overall. I would add - wipe down wood sub floor with damp sponge before applying thinset keeps it from drawing too much moisture from thinset. also stuff rags/etc. in HVAC vent to avoid dust getting in there.
I watched your video on siding installation and now this one and I can say for someone who has no handy man skills you make it very easy to understand. Thank you!!
I fellow your video step by step and i does our bathroom as well!! Very useful for beginners and save lots of the money!! Thank you so much for your video!!!
I bought some nice marble tiles and made a really nice looking pad for underneath my cast iron enameled parlor gas stove. Turned out really nice. I will be re-doing 2 of my bathroom floors so this video is really helpful to do a larger area. Thanks
question did you break off the spacers for the goute joints join how do you get them out? and how soon do you remove the thanks for the awesome video jim
4 месяца назад
Wait at least 24 hours and the spacers snap off from the top leaving the base of the spacer in place under the tile and part of the vertical tab in place below the height of the grout and tile.
I’m doing my bathroom tomorrow, I went with the same spacing/leveling system you went with. They had all kinds of good reviews on it. You have really helped with my house build that’s for sure! Thanks man glad you made these videos
Easier way to mark center of a square (or rectangle) is to draw two diagonal lines from oposing corners, their intersection will be the exact center. Way easier and more accurate than measuring the sides, dividing by two, and marking.
I really enjoyed watching you in this video. You are very good at explaining the step and u make it look easy, and not as hard as people may think it is. I thank you for this video it really help me so much. This is exactly what I needed to see because I’m going to be doing this to our bathroom walls and floor. And I don’t think of the cement board, I liked that. So u can’t use the bathroom for 24 hours after u put the thin set down. Is that correct? If so ugh there’s only one bathroom here lol well this is gong to be interesting to see 😂😂
You mentioned after laying the cement board to wait 24 hours before laying the tiles. I assume we shouldn't walk on it till it dries? I am getting ready to do my kitchen and trying to plan things out. Please advise
A fantastic guy! thanks for the videos. regarding tiles, why not cutting with a diamond blade. notch and crack them. its easy and clean. what's your thoughts?
Hey Josh, I was reading the reviews on your amazon link for the Leveling System & some of the reviews said that the clips don't break off evenly, do you have that problem or is that an operator error?
It's just the floor that has a bathtub for a shower stall that's not directly connected to the flooring..sloping a shower stall is a whole different thing...plenty of videos on here about that
Thanks for the video. Getting ready to tile my first bathroom. I was gonna use Ditra, but felt like the CB would be easier for a first timer. Glad to see that CB is still used, so I think I will go with it.
Do you always have to put thinset down before you put down the cement board or can you install the cement board directly onto the subfloor without thinset?
Was the 100 percent silicone clear or colored? I’m not sure if can even be colored. I’m only asking because I didn’t know if that was a thing or if it can be painted etc.
Hey Josh, thank you for the video very well explained quick question I am putting a toilet in my bedroom, can I run a vent thru the side of the house or does it have to be thru the roof. I really like watching your vids thank you again and have a great day!
i know this is an older video but i want to clarify the back butter of the tile. are you supposed to apply the thinset in the same direction as the thinset on the floor. it looks like you back buttered that first tile in the opposite direction
I need your advice please. I have a Slab floor in my bathroom and it’s drops one inch from one side to the another. Approximately 10 feet by 5 feet. Should I start putting tile on low side or on high side? Or I should use self leveling first? Thank you!
I enjoy watching your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them. Just wondering about how much in material did it cost for your shower and floor install? My bath is a little bigger 6x 14just trying to get an idea cost. I was thinking using similar material as your project. Thanks Again
Great video! Have you ever installed the Schluter ditra system? As an architect I've spec'd it for projects, but haven't installed it myself. I'd like to use the ditra heat system in our master bathrooms for the house we are currently building but I'm not a fan of installing tile myself.
@@irish89055 I typically specify Schluter products, but specific items depends on the project details. I love their uncoupling membranes and trims/transitions. Their waterproofing systems are good quality. I just haven't personally installed their in-floor heating system myself.
how come you did not waterproof the cement board before tiling? I thought this was impt? btw i am an amateur trying to do a bathroom rehab just dont wanna make a big mistake
Do you have a preference from cement board or hardi backer? I've used hardi backer most of the time. Also making sure the sub surface is thick enough to be able to use 1/4" material otherwise 1/2". Putting thinset is so important as well. I've used a hudson sprayer on the back of the floor material to help it not suck all the moisture out so quick for getting all the screws in and able to put in two full sheets as well. Thank you for such a great job and description.
I only have used hardi backer when I was working for a guy modeling a house. Other than that I have always used CB. I am most comfortable using it over anything else. I’d like to try Ditra at some point. Yes a strong subfloor is a must for any type of tile floor backer. I can’t wait to finish all this tile in this house 😅. Thanks for stopping by David!
@@TheExcellentLaborer I use the Ditra product once. It seems like a lot more work. My brother in law who owns the kitchen bathroom remodeling company for over 35 years uses that basically on all the jobs they do. Just like the schluter system. I have always loved just doing the acrylic shower pans and then tile on the walls. But yes when you get used to using a product like you said you just stick with it but you always still do the right steps as needed. As long as you keep showing work I will keep following. I enjoy it so much and learn things each time. I'm proud of all the work you do and the time you take to share it all with others.
The spacers give a gap between the tiles to allow grout to squeeze in between. If you have the tiles too close, there is not enough room for the grout to fit. Then you cannot get a good seal between the tiles. Also, if the tiles were touching each other, when they shift, they could ship. I hope that helps!
@dragonrider9051 Same as you except a couple of days ago, lol. Getting ready to mix up some all set now so I can start working on laying tile over the ditra.

Before tiling over the vent like you did, you should shove a rag down in there tightly to catch the debris and dust etc.
By far the best video!! So descriptive, it’s foolproof!! Thanks
Thanks!
You are welcome Colin!
Very good tutorial.
Thank you!
With the silicone caulk you should use a striking tool to get a perfect seam. Excellent video
Good video! As for the tiles cracking easily with the grinder, I found that cutting from the backside of the tile caused a lot less splitting.
Thanks Steve. I appreciate your input. Knowledge sharing is the key to learning the best techniques. Take care!

You normally wanna trowel the thinset in the shortest direction of the tile so air gaps dont form.
What about square tiles?

What can be done first: the tile floor or the wall tile?
Do you always have to put thinset down before you put down the cement board or can you install the cement board directly onto the subfloor without thinset?

For 12x24 tiles (large format), from what I've read you're supposed to use a 1/2" square notched trowel.
