I wanted to thank you for making these videos. I watched a ton of your videos last year on how to lay tile. My husband and I did it together and laid over 2,220 sq ft in our home. Home Depot wanted to charge us over $10k to do our tile. I learned so much from you and love that someone who never laid tile before can learn. The best part is we added some new tools for future projects. 😊
*And I bet you STILL saved a couple of thousand $. : )*
That is awesome! even if you bought pro tools you must have saved $6-7,000 . Cheers!
Good for you. However, I have redone SO MANY tile jobs by homeowners and hope you followed protocol across the board! If not, you'll have tiles popping, grout cracking all over.
My Home Depot wanted over 3k for 500 sq ft 😂 here I am watching to DIY
Same here... These instructional videos are totally awesome.
Jeff is like a superhero contractor that just came out of nowhere to help people..his information make people feel like builders
The planning and layout chapter is what sets this channel apart from all other diy channels on youtube. I love how you take the time to explain those things and it shows your experience. You the man Jeff!
I don't own a home, I don't plan on making renovations where I live, I don't have tools, I don't even have sand paper BUT, I watched all of the video, I love watching masters talking about their craft, teaching and giving away nuggets of knowledge acquired through years of experience.
I tore out a lot of tile in the home we're in now. The hardest room was the one where someone tiled over linoleum. Not a single tile had a crack. When I finally got it out, there were clearly cracks in the concrete slab. Made me a believer in the decoupling philosophy.
Jeff, I love the way you have the vision of both the contractor and the homeowner...that is an overall best case scenario, win win for them both.
I'm venturing out on my own at 35 after closing my late father's company, trying the fastfood full time grind, and trying the corporate world. Watching and learning from you is actually fulfilling the void. I look forward to my home renovations with your concepts 😊 I should have known from the start that such kindness is from a Canadian 🇨🇦🍁
Jeff, you have saved by life these past few weeks. we have just got our home and the renovations would've been impossible without you. thank you
Thanks for this video. We are having new tile put into our kitchen and this gave me better understanding of what will be done. Great work and your videos have improved over the years!
You are a champ Jeff. Thanks for your comments a few weeks ago about flooring vinyl/lino tiles in bathrooms. I’m planning a self-contained apartment renovation for my son to live more independently on his moms house lot. Your suggestion completely changed my thinking about what’s possible within the budget. So grateful. Colin
Cheers Colin, Happy to be of help!
When I started out on my own you became my teacher. And i learned everything I needed to bc you have a video for all home remodeling...
My fav episode is when you had the shiner lol. You dedicated to helping people and I swear my business thrives from your detailed and precise work
Jeff you teaching us how to do it ourselves, giving us the tools to become successful is life changing . Thank you
Good video, and tile process is well explained :)
but guys don't tile over vinyl!
10yr adjuster here (IICRC certified) and I've seen way to many tile floor have to be destroyed because of this. The process itself is fine for the tile, Yes. But the issue is, when you have a water loss/ leak/ flood in the room and water gets under the vinyl it can separate the vinyl from the subfloor and then your tile will fail. Tile on concrete subfloor is the better option. Even if it's a wood subfloor, that subfloor can usually be dried in place.
I appreciate you guys so much, been watching for years. I'm already freaking out about buying my first home and with you guys I know its going to be alright
I just finished watching your video and you give so much information, if viewers listen. It's like being the newbie on the job with a patient mentor. I've watched a lot of videos on RUclips to learn about different interest of mine and I don't think I've watch one that gave me as much knowledge as this video did! Everyone has an opinion about what they are talking about, but you provided me sweat and hard work, earned by you. I can't thank you enough! I know I'll make mistakes but there will be this voice over my shoulder saying, "Remember I mentioned this very issue." That will be your voice. Subscribed for sure!
Tip: I found having a suction cup handle invaluable when setting 12x24" tile or larger. Easier to set in some areas needing more reach (maybe a corner) or lift/reset to check coverage or some other reason (maybe forgot to back butter one :))
I have been watching your videos for years, and not only are you a top tradesman AND teacher but i can confidently say you come across as a very genuine person. Good on yer cobber.
Best tile video...EVER. This guy has seen it all and brings expertise to the regular homeowner. The tip about the doorway is gold.
My wife and I are about to start tiling our kitchen floor theres ive been watching alot of tlyt diy and yours seem to be the best one yet! Easy to follow, Thank-youSo much 👍
Idk if there’s anyone that makes better videos than you. Thank you for the details and explaining WHY certain procedures is needed.
Getting ready to do 100 sq ft of tile in our main bathroom. I started to watch a few 5 min videos, but quickly realized I needed to come to Jeff's tile university. You're a legend, Jeff. Thank you.
Yet again, Jeff releases a long-form video of a project I am undertaking in a week. Great timing Jeff!
Just want to tell you how much I appreciate how much information you share. Thank you Thank ypu Thank you a thousand times over. Your videos are always on point I never feel like I waisted anytime. The knowledge you share is priceless!!! Thank you again.
I don’t even plan to do any tile in a long time but I just sit here spent an hour watching this video. The last minute of slowing down and make sure you spend the time to work with your material is golden advice in itself.
Cheers!
I don't know tile, but I know people, and this guy knows what he's talking about. (I've laid a total of about 5K sq ft of tile in my life.) Other than one Construction Super (Foreman) that taught me how to lay, I've never seen it explained so well.
At the onset, you might get a sense that his communication/personality style is "excitable" but I assure you, it is not. It's pure knowledge. I know guys like that that literally know something so damn backwards and forwards that their mouths can't keep up with their brains. Absolute cream of the crop. I'd work for you anytime. Thanks brother.
Come on man!!! I started doing the floor in my laundry room 6 hours ago and messed everything up… needed this 8 hours ago!
LOL, I hope your kidding. If not then at least you had time to lift the tile and prep to do it again. Cheers!
Jeff I’m going to renovate my home most DYI by me im so inspired by you. I will share my process with you when I start next month!
i love how you're always addings how bad of a job big housing contractors do a shitty job, really makes me appreciate my older house even more
Am 61 years old and God blessing still mobile and able, your like the teacher I never had but always wanted, thank you so much for the patience and experience pored out that can be easily missed when tiling. Am about to do my own bathroom and was quoted £5 and a half thousand pounds ($7.100.00) to do the work, I decided to have a go and do the work myself and go on holiday with the change. If it was possible I would have given you 5K likes, I truely enjoy what you do
Great to hear. you got this and enjoy the vacation! Cheers from Canada!
Geez!! I have been following you since many years and just realize you are living 30 minutes from me lol that's cool!! Btw, I'm in Gatineau :) take care! And thanks for your precious tips and way of explaining your knowledge!
You read my mind lol. I was just about to tackle a tile floor in my powder room. Thank you for your priceless advice 🙏🏻
You can do it! Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY thanks to your videos, I certainly can 👍🏻
You are very right Jeff! New construction homes tile installation are thrown in. Very little coverage is achieved. Membranes and primers are only used if mandated/required. What’s worse is the little timeframe to complete those jobs. It breeds this mindset where speed is mistaken for knowledge and quality.
For staggered we do 3 then reset but yeah I prefer subway style when it’s an option. Only ever back butter on floors when tile is larger than 12x24 or mortar mix is used.
jeff, you're the best. thank you. would love to see the spacers in action - for us beginners...
I've been watching your videos for quite some time now. Every video is top quality, easy, and enlightening. Greetings from Zagreb 🇭🇷.
Thank you so much for the explanation during the planning and layout. Clear and concise, exactly what I needed to understand about this part of the process.
I am in this business and have seen your vid along with other RUclipsrs curious to see what others do or some tricks. You did a great job explaining how to start, mistakes clients and installers make, different patterns to choose. Thank you for this video and I believe it will help many homeowners doing it themselves.
Awesome, thank you! Always good to hear from a practical tradesmen. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I do this for a living too; Jeff always has great advice and well-explained practical techniques for everyone from beginners to professionals. He’s like a renovation superhero; I constantly come back to his videos.
Best tile video ive come across so far, very in depth with great tips 👍
Honestly Jeff, I've been watching your videos for awhile now. I just saw this video up, and I haven't seen one in awhile. Now upon seeing this video pop up in my feed, I can Honestly say I was pumped! I realized I'm officially a fan! Cheers to you Jeff! Glad you are doing well. Your videos are fantastic!
Thanks for that. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY No, thank you, for all the awesome work, and advice you give into your videos. Cheers!
Love your instructions and thrifty mindset. Thank You!
Fantastic informative video, thank you for going over everything in such detail.
Thank you SO much for taking the time to make this video. I learned so much and feel much less intimidated to tile my kitchen :)
Glad it was helpful!
I've said it once & I'll say it for forever, YOU ARE A GEM
Thank you Lauren. I appreciate you!
Thank you Jeff for these videos! Life saver!
Best diy and general /in-depth knowledge of most things on RUclips 💪🏾✊🏾
I appreciate that. Cheers!
If u only knew how much I watch ur channel ! I’m basically max ! Lol
With the help of this video and some others I’ve started the flooring in my house. I’m in the middle of laying roughly 400 square feet of tile.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to join a tile floor to an existing 3/4" wood floor sitting on 1/4" cork (total thickness - 1") without using a transition piece. I prefer to use a cement board base over a 3/4" subfloor that underlies both the wood and tile floor to come. I'm worried that a 1/2" think cement board will be to thin and that a 5/8" thick version might be too thick. Can you please advise?
God bless you this is a great video just for the layout portion. I loved the wall drawings.
Excellent thank you for your endless knowledge!!
*Perfect timing Jeff!*
_Greetings from down south (Atlanta, Georgia), my Northern Canadian brother. : ) I'm about a week away from tiling two bathrooms & a kitchen (all currently have ugly 15+ year old pale off-white tile). Thanks, as always, for posting your always-helpful (and entertaining), DIY/common sense-based videos!_
Cheers Andy, happy to be of help.
Came for the Thorman grunts. Didn't disappoint.
I’m really learning so much and you saved me thousands on repairs for my new house (first time home buyer). Do you have any videos on repairing garage photo sensors? There’s no wiring coming from my garage wall. I appreciate it
I just finished my first tile job turned out really good but this video came out just as I finished but watching this video I know I did it right thank you so much
That is awesome! Cheers!
Have watched your past home renovation and enjoyed every video. Now I am getting ready to tile the bathroom floor with 24x12 tiles. Have plywood underlayment, level and great shape. Was told to use Ditra as a decoupler., dampening the plywood first. For the door threshold, does the Schulter metal edging go on top of the Ditra or under it? Is thinset all that is needed to install the metal edge?
Cheers 🍻 from Texas! Thank You for all the tips and tricks!
You bet! Happy to help. Cheers to Texas!
Always great videos. Thanks!
Oh that’s gold, the “Worcestershire” poles! 😂😅 10/10 I’m using that at work. @3:24
His videos are awesome happy I came across this channel.
great video thanks for the info im about to do my whole house in tile and this video really helps
The information starting at 4:52 is KEY
Just remember people this is his way of doing things. He keeps talking about industry standard. Find me a standard that says you start a full time in the door and end with a small pice at the other end the very end that when you first walk in your going to see. A transition. Piece is a better option to get the fullest piece at the other end. I always do a lay out and then give the home owner the option and make sure they understand and give them a visuals look. I have never had anyone want the small pieces at the very end. So the way I like to do it is suggest what I have seen Snd know to work best, look best, and what is generally done. Then I tell the home owner it really completely up to them and what they find best. Then I have done my job and made sure that the homeowner had the say then they can’t come back at me because I did the install my way and not how the person paying for the job would have prefured. This guy is not wrong it’s just his way and not truly the standard the standard should always be ask the person paying the bill and you can normally not go wrong even if you know it is. The Customer is always right even if they are wrong. Don’t get in a pissing contest just explain what you know to work best and why you think their idea or how they want it will not work but if you decide that is the way you want it done we will just note and sign it in the contract and do the job.
Thanks! With all my respect. I love you 💗!!
Great videos you been helping me a lot though all the information you share 🙂🥇
Love your videos. Learned a ton from you.
Was wondering if you could do a video on how to put a deck next to an aboveground pool and transition from an existing deck that is 1.5 feet above the ground.
we will see. Cheers!
Ditto on the vinyl flooring as an alternative to the expensive use of DITRA or equivalent substrates!
I’ve used that for years in my tile business… FYI-for large or extra large crack repairs I used the stitching method of crack repair by using #3 rebar and bending it to look like a staple and inserting it perpendicular to the large crack every 16”-20”.
Sir. I hope to grow my skills to your level and produce videos hopefully half as good as you.
You are an angel
HI Jeff. Any tips on applying self leveling compound? I need to tile my kitchen floor but its in poor condition as its very uneven and has sticky floor tiles down. Any tips gratefully received. Keep up the good work sir, your videos are awesome.
Thank you for these videos. Please make videos where it's hard to chose from where to start lying tiles where you have two or more complications about heights to respect. Including floor level problems. I'm sure you must have done videos of the sort. But I just discovered your channel. Thank for this investment.
Love the breakdown in this video!
Cheers Eric!
Ye Haw! Always great videos Jeff. On finding square, when checking if cabinet wall is perpendicular to transition, can use just 2 tile thickness & no grout line. Just want to see if distance to cabinet is the same at each end. Laser line over long distance is affected by lining it up at short transition. Need to be careful lining up laser on transition.
Your videos are fun to watch Thank you 🎉
Could one do a full layout with all cut tiles included, then mix thinset and apply? Best Home DIY Content out there! 👍
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time
Whats really crazy is my name is Fred 😂😂 and I'm in the process of learning how to do a basic d.i.y tile job in a bathroom so I feel like this video DIRECTLY applied to me...thanks for the help
Happy to be of help Fred. Cheers!
Hi @homeRenovisonDIY.
Thanks a lot your video, helpful in lot of ways for DIYer.
I am planning to tiles around the fireplace to the hight of 20ft. Just wondering how do we prep the wall? And other recommendations please 🙏
“Protect yourself if you’re sensitive at all.”That is silica dust. Nothing to take lightly
Thanks for adding this. Familiarity breeds complacency, but silicosis is incurable and serious. Wearing dust masks is slightly annoying (I wear one at my business often) but it's a small price to pay to prevent a lifelong disability.
His audience is homeowners not contractors. I wear a negative air respirator since I do this for a living but if I was mixing thinset one or two times in my life I wouldn’t bother with it
@@chriscolameco6850 I don’t think that even matters, everyone, homeowners and contractors included can benefit from taking preventative measures to reduce the chance of contracting a serious illness.
Yes his audience may be more homeowners and DIY, but it’s important to spread information that will help people go the right away about their projects. There’s people out there who will neglect their health possibly because they don’t have the right information or they just simply don’t know about the dangers of these topics.
@@chriscolameco6850 dude one or two times.. three times, doesn’t matter, that shit goes into your lungs and does not come back out, and silicosis is a progressive disease. The tissues in your lungs are slowly destroyed even after you stop exposure.
Bob Vila? I/we don't give a hoot about him. You are THE BEST.
Thanks for sharing such knowledge and experience with us :)
Great video; thank you for the many suggestions! On the last set, where you move 6inches in and 6inches back on the following row, does that mean that you have to fill the gap of the row above with a tile that is only 6 inches long? Hope my question makes sense.
I rebuilt a Subaru engine off RUclips, and with videos like this one, Im pretty sure I can install my kitchen floor. 8x8 hexagon Saltillo, so its gonna be a lot different than your examples- but you've relayed a lot of good common sense contractor knowledge. Thanks.
for tile like that use tile leveling spacers. Cheers!
You are absolutely awesome humble human being..
hey Jeff I'm a beginner tiler however I was never thought how to begin a tiling project if I wanna tile a floor on the diagonal. I would appreciate if you can do a video thanks
Do you have any video/tricks for tiling outdoor (patio or balcony) where the underlying concrete has a slope? Or has 4 slopes, towards the one drain in the middle?
You are a great teacher, you make it very interesting! You should be a tutor in a college!
Hi HRV, Love your lessons. I have a strange situation that I hope you can advise me on?
My kitchen was renovated before I bought my apartment. The *homeowner?* Move the refrigerator to
the small wall which used to be a telephone table, and installed a single floor cabinet beside the fridge.
The cabinet came loose from the wall...
The *homeowner?* must have had a problem with the last 1 inch border tile along the wall
and filled the empty space with ? that turned brown over the years. They didn't even try to make
the surface smooth. Really ugly.
I chipped out the old brown stuff, and the concrete floor underneath looks like it was painted white. No netting.
Do you think that I can use grout to fill that space and keep it stable?
Always, Thank you!
Really awesome video! Thanks for putting it together. Question-- How come you didn't use the spacers? Was that just to save time in the demonstration?
Hi thank you for this in-depth video. I’ve never tiled but I have a kitchen with THE MOST 🤦🏽♀️annoying vinyl tiles and I’m actually considering tiling over them myself. I find your videos very thorough and easy to follow HOWEVER, “climatize your tiles”??? Are you saying it’s not good to tile in winter??🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️💁🏽♀️I live in England so, how would I get the tiles to be the same/ right temperature??? I don’t understand.😕
Thanks for your all video, i wish i could joined your class.
Jeff, I didn't know you were in Ottawa! I am born and raised there :) We need to know how to soundproof a pocket door for a bathroom!
Do whatever ya gotta do, set a bear trap!😂
Love it, this is awesome brain food on how to do this stuff right!👍🏻 I wish I had access to this channel before I tiled my bathroom. It’s been about 18 years since and it needs to be ripped out and done over🤦🏻♂️
Glad you enjoyed it!
We have a 1920’s farm house in central Minnesota. Hardwood floor meeting plywood floors on top of crawl space. We also have two dogs, what type of floating floor do you recommend? Vinyl? Laminate? Thanks Jeff!!
"... don't be that guy...." LOL your videos!
Love your videos! keep them coming!
Another inspiring and very instructional video. Jeff you are just awesome!
Great video. My question to you is. I have 12x12 vct tiles on the floor already. Do I need a special prima or clue to attach a new 12x12 vct on top. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank
Great video, very informative. As a begginer shouldnt I use spacers?
Amazing video! I will be tiling over wood floorboards with crawl space under. You mentioned 1/2” cememt boards but could I use 1/4” boards to prevent raising the floor too much? Also would I need to waterproof floor board or cement board (will not be in shower)? Thank you!
Incredibly good video.
Great video I will try a small room but git a pro for the large kitchen.thanks
Awesome video, thank you.
This man is a national treasure.
Cheers and Thanks!
Thank you for your response
