  • @hannahkamos
    @hannahkamos 5 лет назад +160

    This has actually been an obsessive thought of mine since I was around 12. Having our home destroyed by a fire is my worst case scenario, I still run through my “save list” on a monthly basis. Over the years I’ve narrowed it down to: Family, pets, document box (because, though not impossible, it would be a pain in the butt to get all our certificates replaced), phones, laptops. The list used to be a lot longer but, not surprisingly, it was easy to cut down once I actively started practicing minimalism and releasing my emotional attachment to objects. Even if we do loose everything, I’ve finally feel like I’m in a mental place where I could deal with it, as long as all our family is safe! Love all your videos!!!

    • @TheJroddude
      @TheJroddude 5 лет назад +3

      Hannah Amos I obsessed over this when I was really young but that was so long ago. I wonder why it stuck around for you into adulthood. It’s a complex trauma to contemplate, but usually the fascination dissipates over time. Seems like we just worry about random shit our whole lives and that’s what holds people back.

    • @elciamh
      @elciamh 5 лет назад +2

      When I was young I actually thought that if my house would have burnt, I would be okay with. That's probably because I always felt like I have too much stuff, but didn't know how to get rid of all of it. If my house would have burnt, I wouldn't have to think about it (I know it's kinda not okay but I was young 🤷‍♀️)

I always thought I’d grab my purse and my dogs paw print and this frog that my grandma gave me... but you know what?! I caught my oven on fire cuz there was this pizza box I didn’t know was there. However, I didn’t think I could stop the fire and all I could think was about my three pets and my husband. I didn’t give a shit about the rest of the house! I wanted my loved ones safe. On the real life note, if my house were burning I would probably assess the situation, make sure my family is safe, and see if it is something I can handle. If I cannot handle putting it out, I would either run to my neighbors house to call the towns fire department, or run/ride my bike as fast I can to the fire house.

    During a cross country move in a howling winter storm of snow and ice, I watched our moving truck flip and roll, which was being driven by 2 loved ones. NOT A SINGLE OBJECT in the truck mattered when compared to the value of human life. Both loved ones walked away from that incident miraculously. I've also experienced the aftermath of a house fire which happened when I was not home. In the end, things are things. Memories are yours to keep. Loved ones are irreplacable (people, animals, plants)...

    I know what I would grab if there was a fire. I've known for years. 4 things.
    1-laptop bag (contains laptop, charger, usbs and some pens and notebook)
    2- handbag (contains wallet, phone, portable charger and keys)
    3- accordion folder that contains all my paperwork.
    4- My overnight/emergency bag (contains 2 sets of clothes and basic toiletries) I always have this packed in case I need to go somewhere. I don't like to suddenly have to pack things so I consider it necessary for my life. I have used this bag many times.
    I have tried to live minimally for several years now. I consider these 4 objects to be my most important as I can live off only these. Whilst they do contain other things, I like the simplicity of only ever having to grab 4 things rather than bundle everything up to go anywhere.

    I think your videos are cool. Also if I was living alone and not married, I would get rid of a lot of things...but my husband is into many things. I would walk out of my burning house with my body and my wedding ring, a few photo albums, a passport, a wallet with my credit cards and ID. (of course I would take my 4 dogs and my husband.) The rest is replaceable. The wallet and the passport...are also replaceable, but if I had time...I would probably grab those because replacing those would be a pain in the ass.
    I wonder why you have such a big place if you don't need the space....You could live in a small motor home or van with the things that you have and save on rent money. You could also rent a room from someone and save on expenses.

    I would only save two things.
    1)My rabbit child(Sam) above all no questioning.
    2)My journal(Because I save very forgettable important memories in it).

    Actually this was where it started for me many years ago 😊 what would I save in case of fire? Couldn't think of a single thing...after that I started downsizing 😉

    I'm going to add another comment to the one I just posted because fire safety is very important to me: I want to encourage people to not have anything in a place that would block or slow your access to doors and windows if you have to get out fast in an emergency. I want to encourage people to look around in the places where you go to school, work or elsewhere so you know to get out in an emergency.---When the ocean liner Empress of Ireland sank rapidly at night in 1914, many of the survivors were from the crew and not because they didn't try to help the passengers who were unfamiliar with the ship's deck plan (the Empress had sailed only hours before) but because they had been instructed to know the ship's layout so well that they could get out on the open deck even in darkness. Even a little knowledge and preparation can save our lives.

    I would make sure my pets and spouse were safe first. If I had time, I'd grab phone, purse, and laptop so I could continue to do my job and have an easier time in the aftermath.

    I think my most valuable possetion is my phone. I keep all the notes, songs, projects etc in there and not everything is in the cloud. And the documents of course, if we talk about stuff.

    Everything I care for and the docs I need are in a fire box with space to add more shit in case of a fire. I'd grab that box and my macbook, then bolt tf out with my dog. For sure.

    The Burning House was my absolute favorite and I still think about it sometimes because I really think it boils down the 'Do I really need any of this stuff that is SUFFOCATING ME?!!!' problem I have.
    I found it a few years after a hurricane had rolled through and destroyed most of our household including all of my favorite books in a flood. As a result I'm pretty laid back about all of it disappearing in a natural disaster and me being fine because that's how it was for me. Then it's just like a practical question too, like, maybe I should start adulting better and put my documents I want to grab in an easy to grab and go kinda space?? Instead of the mess my papers are in reality haha.
    I had no idea it was the same person that did all of that, that's amazing!

    If there is time, my laptop, cause i am a student. So my priorities are, myself, my dog, a memory of my mother and school... other material things you can replace.
