I can spend hours reading a book without getting distracted but when I'm listening to an audiobook, I keep getting lost in thoughts and it becomes background noise.
I agree, I feel so much less involved with the story and I pay less attention. There’s certainly some types of books that work as an audiobook, but I feel with most novels you’re getting a better experience taking it in how the author intended.
@@susanjohn6506 And you don't have trouble focusing on what's being said? I find myself drifting off into thoughts and missing many sentences and then it's not that easy to go back to the exact point where I lost track.
There are certain things I purchase specifically to support something I love and want to see continue in the future, but if I can I try to keep it to digital or consumable items. I have bought the Avatar, Last Airbender series digitally and the e-books because I want to support entertainment that is inclusive, diverse, well-written, and based on compassion and kindness rather than most entertainment about people being cruel to one another. The fan support in this case has worked! Just days after the 16th anniversary, the creators now have a studio to continue new Last Airbender projects, and I will continue to support with my purchases for as long as they can maintain that level of quality heartwarming entertainment!
the moment I realised that things weren't right was when I had a glass of orange juce and I realised that it didn't seem sweet at all. That's when I realised that I needed to cut my sugar.

Having been raised by semi-hoarders, I had never thought about minimalism or even reducing de amount of stuff I own. In a year I'll be moving to another country and because it's so expensive to ship my stuff overseas, I'll have to get rid of everything except what fits in a large suitcase. I've been thinking of our nomad ancestors (before they domesticated animals) and how the amount of stuff they could own was exactly the amount of stuff they had the physical strength to carry. It's at the same time daunting and exciting that the same will hold true for me.
I am wondering: Since you save so much money now through your minimalist lifestyle, what do you plan to do with the money you save once you've fully retired? Do you ever plan to experiment with a lavish lifestyle or do you want to remain minimalist (no matter how much money you have) and then leave that money to something/someone after you pass?
I’m watching this while drinking a Starbucks iced coffee. I live very close to Seattle (Vancouver Island) and there’s a Starbucks on every corner. It’s a hard habit to break.
I'm an English student and so I usually like to buy my books instead of just checking them out from a library so I can write and annotate in them. I counted once and I think I have like 200 books, which is really the upper limit of physical books I feel comfortable owning (especially since my degree's almost over). My solution was to get a Kobo e-reader since they're really easy to connect to most library's Overdrive systems, plus they have a good selection of e-books in their store. I went for the Kobo so I wouldn't have to be dependent on the Amazon ecosystem. I've never been an e-reader person before but it's gonna be so nice buying as many books as I want (or checking out as many as I want) and not having to make space for them somewhere in my apartment
I love physical copies of books and movies. I always get them through thriftbooks since most of their stock is used items from libraries or whatnot. I also purged a lot of my art supplies. I found the mediums that work for me and I’m more than happy with my few quality items.
People who have straight hair have NO IDEA how people with curly hair struggle everyday damn day hahaha. Seriously you can wake up every morning and your hair is already DONE. You can go out in the rain and it will never go FRIZZY. Your hair is always shiny and soft... Straight-haired people, please, appreciate your hair more... - A curly-haired person
I am reading e-books on my tablet and I could find pdf or epub type on libgen. Maybe it sound criminall little bit but I saved about $300. Thank you for your Minimal videos!
If your library system is anything like the ones here in Sweden, your library can order the book you like from any other library that has it. For free. And you still return it to your local library.
I have too much stuff to be considered a minimalist but have been carting the same stuff from house to house for years. Starbucks failed in Australia because we have a serious coffee culture here. I like coffee, but make it at home.
As a painter, I’ve now hundreds of stretched canvases. The work is good and needs some walls!..what’s a painter to do?! I like the feeling of paint but this may push me to try more tech based art, although tech 😱!!!
Keep if it's essential to you❗❗❗ you don't have to minimize everything in your life that works for you. If you really want to downsize start little by little.🙃
I work in a coffee shop so I basically get paid for my coffee addiction which is nice (except for the new spikes in anxiety 😅) but I recently calculated some of our regulars who come literally every day (with the exception of holidays, a few off days so roughly ~350 days a year !!) spend over $2,000 a year on their daily $5-$7 drinks. Insanity.
Yes, you do need to pay for books. So the author actually makes a bit of money to pay the bills. So she can write more novels. That's not minimalism that;s just plain robery.
For me time spent on reading paper books (i can't stand audiobooks) or drawing/painting is very precious as i'm not lookng at the screen. If i switched to digital art and kindle, i would only not look at the monitor while sleeping I'm afraid.
Yes, I have pondered about trying digital art, but I work in IT, so looking at a screen the whole time, and then I like to do art on paper. And then I thought, investiung in digital art stuff just for using it quite seldomly...? Probably not. Not now :D
Same... And besides I have an anxiety feeling that some day time will come that all the digital books (with true value) will not be available (destroyed or smth) but as we reduced the books in paper people will not have an access to some knowledge.
OMG! LOL you could for sure look after a cat Lefie! it's just your not ready to commit yet that's all! And your right Philodendron would be a great name for a cat, a fantastic name! Thank you I feel greatly honoured that you mentioned me.... LOL it's made my Monday! Hmm new books, not often but with my fave authors - William Gibson, Michael Ondaatje, Alison Weir, and it sounds silly but the smell of a new book, that feeling when you have it in your bag and suddenly you have 15 minutes spare … Books could not give up books... Beer on the other hand - I brew a fair amount of my own and for under $18 can make about 23 liters of the stuff. Once you have done this paying $10 or more for a pint is just not good and I can also re-cycle plastic bottles (at least once). So that’s a nice thing to go a bit minnimal on! PS beautifull work as always thans! :-)
I've returned just to see what Steve said, As I was quite curious to know how he reacted. 😺 It's neat that Lefie mentioned you; what an honor to receive! If for some reason she were to get a cat, I hope she'd name it Steve. 😎
Coffee definitely a thing!! Didnt realise how much i was spending until I was gifted an aeropress and now I just buy beans 😁 Added benefit of coffee whenever as well... ☕ aside from that and clothes, im pretty much your opposite 😂👌
I cut Starbucks & Dunkin’ out as well due to Keto. But even with the premium roasts i brew at home, it’s never as good as those delicious drive-thru delights i used to indulge in. The cost was absurd for sure but I still miss Dunkin’ iced coffee all the time. 😫

"Audiobooks. They're available. You don't need to pay for that!" While true with buying used copies of physical books or ebooks of bigtime writers, otherwise, please try not to torrent ebook files or listen to them on youtube if they're by an Indie writer. :(
yeah, that made me upset, I even rewound to see if I just misheard... books aren’t just available!! usually, a whole lot of people has been involved in the creation of a book. if everybody would have the oh-it’s-available-mindset, there would be close to no books at all...

I don't think she meant that. I'm pretty sure it was about apps like Audible, not torrenting books
I did a “tick” file after reading the books by the Sidetracked House Executive sisters. A set of three books about decluttering and cleaning the home, the kitchen, and my favorite: The Happiness File in which they gave each month a theme. A wonderful set of books which set up my cards n a “Rolodex” system. And yes they are still in print. For a while the system showed me how “lazy” I was, but on a system I trained myself to be excited about being and am clean. Sorry for being wordy and in the old school world of thought, yet a life was touched.
In your next video, can you explain how you choose the things you do buy and add to your life on a permanent basis (e.g. non consumable things) as I'd imagine it's a bit of a process :)
I still buy books....no library where I am. However I am very particular about the books I buy. I don't buy hair stuff either because I shaved my long hair in 2019. I also don't buy makeup, accessories, etc. I thrift replacement clothing only as needed. I cut sugar & processed foods out of my diet 8 months ago. Best decision!! I don't buy any take out food, no restaurants, no fast food, not even coffee. I don't buy house plants, but I grow veggies in the summer.
Shopping stressful? It's many young woman's most loved pastime. Black can be beautiful, but only black all the time? To me that's very boring. If you cannot take care of plants, you might consider a faux plant of good quality. Some are extremely beautiful and you wouldn't notice the difference, except perhaps for the failing yellowing leaves ;)
I don't know about your library but ours has all kinds of things you can check out like... beer making equipment, all types of craft tools, easels, games, puzzles, video games and much more!! I don't buy sprouts, yogurt, bread, rolls or pizza crust ready made anymore, now I make my own.
I stopped going to movie theatres, by waiting a year or two. We have an excellent local roaster, I'll treat myself to a pound occasionally and mix it half and half with my folger's or maxwell house, it raises the flavour level exponentially! I'm a cataloguing technician at a public library, the other resource, especially when Covid is over are the Friends' library boutiques, where you can get very good titles for a fraction of the cost and support your local library (if they have second hand books sales). I love Overdrive or Libby, as well as Kanopy, Flipster, and Creative Bug. Explore what your local public library has to offer. I'm using up art supplies, probably for the next 2 years. I joined our local pioneer village, and it's a great green space loaded up with interesting buildings, demonstrations, and artifacts. It's a place away from back lit blue lighted rectangular screens. I wonder if they'll ever have oval or round screen computers?
Sweets. I still love sweet things. Probably a decade or more of cutting sweet things (and keto-mostly for several years)... and I still crave sweet things. Oi.
I have to say it: I love books!!!!! I love reading them... and feeling their texture when I pass the page, smelling them, ...😊 I buy new books, second hand books and also I go to library. Also I pay one of those on line suscription libraries, but I barely use it.
Music is a big one for me; many were the hours I spent in my local music store poring over old punk albums and leaving with a stack of CDs and the smell of patchouli on my clothes. Well, I've never been a collector and with the advent of digitized music, there wasn't really much need to keep buying physical media. I can't even remember getting rid of them; they just disappeared over time. I imagine the same will happen to my DVDs and Xbox games; it'll all be on the cloud...
While i understand what you mean i can't agree with you on a few things, just personal preference though. I love to be surrounded by plants, having plants at home and having plants outside, i love them, they bring me a sense of tranquility and they make a space feel alive and welcoming. Also, the colored clothes 😂 i love bright colours, most of my clothes were passed down to me from aunts, grandmas or my mom but the ones i wear the most, the ones i feel sad to wash because i don't want them to fall apart... Well, those are the burnt orange, mustard yellow, various greens or bright red ones. Those are the ones that brighten my mood when i wear them cause i randomly catch those colors in my peripheral vision 😍
Libraries and audio books are not free. It's funny to see someone looking for freedom in minimalism to fall into socialism, communism or corporatism. North Korea (DPRK) also has adopted this kind of minimalism and freedom. It sounds romantic in some ways. Japan is well known for minimalism too. After living 17 years there, my understand is that they do not have the ressources not to be minimalist. Therefore, I guess the point of view of this video is mainly US or Western. Interesting video anyway :) Thank you for sharing.
I used to buy a weekly starbucks and indeed. I didn't do the math. I now brew my coffee at home. Buuuuut starbucks still is a treat every now and then I used to buy a lot of beauty producs where now I have a few standards. I used to buy fast fashion which would break or shrink in the wash and yes it might be more expensive to buy high quality... But in the long run the item will be usable for longer.
I used to buy souvenirs because that's what you did. Now, if I'm going to buy something, I look for drink coasters. I have 5 or 6 now and have them for n various locations around the house. I don't do house plants because I am not good with. I do have pretty flowers and plants in my backyard garden. All perennials, minimal work needed.
I no longer buy any decor/useless items at all. After moving house 4 times in a year I do not want to own anything that can break or I do not love enough to carry up and down a billion flights of stairs.
My friends in college also put together a projector setup, and it was super great. Our group had a person with hearing loss, so we always watched wih subtitles on. I remember still how pre-pandemic, I went to a _super_ dialogue-heavy movie -- the first movie that I'd been to theaters for in years -- and found it way less enjoyable not having subtitles on everything. So yeah, agreed! When it becomes more viable for us to have a home theater setup in the future, we're definitely doing it just based on accessibility concerns, but saving $$ is a nice bonus. 😊
reason for buying new books: supporting the author. i almost never buy books new when i read them first (usually go to the library) but when i really enjoyed a book, like the author and feel like i might read the book again i'll buy it (obvously doesn't have to be a physical book).
Gym membership. I used to go and use maybe three machines at the gym and take a class here and there. Then I realized are tons of free workout routines online. I’ve even done the old school jazzercise. Some people might need weights, etc. to maintain a specific physique. I personally can get a good workout without any equipment.
Sorry for my english, not native and sometimes I sound more rought/mean that i want in english. Buying books is remuneration for author that spent months (sometimes years) writing them. It's ... justice. Same for movies tickets. I thing paying or the art and entertainment is important, "all free" put artist in a difficult situation.
10 things i don't buy anymore include: Toilet paper (i use a bidet) Cleaning products (i make my own) Plant foods (i'm a carnivore) Sugary beverages (same as above) Colored clothes (i wear black for simplicity) Cars (i ride a bicycle) Movie tickets (i have my own home theatre) Physical books (i prefer audiobooks and like to support authors) Home decor (i prefer the empty space) New gadgets (i always try to buy second hand)
Not buying books or audiobooks either. What a lot of people don’t know: If your local library does not have a book you are interested in, you can usually order it via the libraries website. Sometimes up to 10 books/audiobooks per month.
Hi Lefie! Can you have a pink or orange tshirt? The life is full of colour and you are young and beautiful. Let me know how the people around you react at this small change. I used to have only white, black and grey clothes.
Libraries: I borrow nearly every book I read (and I read the vast majority of the time, not listen). And if I love it, I buy it, new from my local bookstore.
I will say I'm not against souvenirs because it can be part of the economy in those places BUT I will focus my interests on local goods that benefit the actual locals and not cheap import tourist crap. Saying that I have no issue giving away my stuff after a year even if it's cherished as I take a photo of it and if it's also good quality it's nicer to give it away than something cheap nobody really wants. I think its a balance and I won't buy something just for the sake of having something to take back.
nothing any free er ,than not to much. i have been guilty of buying books---get them on used--but still lots of time shipping costs---i will be passing them on very soon my ten are much like yours---thank you for this---deatra
Don’t worry about your hair, when you get old, like me, all the blond will turn into kinky grey! Lol I don’t buy any make up, even lipstick for that “special night out” not that there have been any in the last year!
I just watched this video 1yr later, I don't even buy atleast a single thing on this list but I'm still broke just bc the bare necessities are already too pricey, man life is expensive
I refuse to buy clothes online. Many look frumpy. I hate returning things! Most has to worry about their image and can't dress like a toddler or a homeless person. Most has to wear tailored clothes and have their hair done professionally to be competitive. It worries me that someone would not want a few houseplants. It's human nature- I do not want my house to look like a state hospital.
I have adapted not eating meat- started bc was cheaper and now I actually cannot stomach meat and had severe cramping when I tried it again; just don’t bother anymore and am not feeling depleted. Also haven’t drank alcohol in a year- again choice and don’t miss it at all.
I like watching your videos because it’s so different from me. It does make me wonder, why do I want to cling onto so much to materialistic things? Anyway, at least I know it doesn’t control me - I managed to get rid of a lot of things when I got married and moved into our apartment. There are some things I won’t get rid of though, such as a certain soup spoon that I stole from my high school culinary arts class on our last day of school of my senior year.
People ask me how I can drink iced green tea with no sweetener and yeah I'm the annoying person saying any sweetener makes it "too sweet". Also I basically trained myself. I started with sugar and slowly added less and less honey or whatever and now I like it unsweetened
4:51 I, too, don't have pets or plants, saving time & money, but I do believe I'd feel a little sad if there weren't any more "Consider getting a cat" comments from Steve. 😹

I agree, I feel so much less involved with the story and I pay less attention. There’s certainly some types of books that work as an audiobook, but I feel with most novels you’re getting a better experience taking it in how the author intended.
I love audio books because I can be doing chores at the same time & it turns it into a pleasurable time.
@@susanjohn6506 And you don't have trouble focusing on what's being said? I find myself drifting off into thoughts and missing many sentences and then it's not that easy to go back to the exact point where I lost track.
@@adeadgirl13 I listen when I am doing repetitive stuff, housework, gardening, walking, things I want to be distracted from lol.
@@susanjohn6506 I guess it's different for different people. I can't stay focused even when listening to the audiobook is the only thing I'm doing!
I can't wait to be able to afford an apartment where I can be peacefully alone and fill the space with only that which is important to me
There are certain things I purchase specifically to support something I love and want to see continue in the future, but if I can I try to keep it to digital or consumable items.
Real orange juice is not hypersweet as artificial sugar.
I would love to watch one on the things you intentionally buy now as a minimalist. Things you really value.
I can't live without a cat.
Nor me that's why I have 5 of them 😻
@@bex438 Nor us. We have 14. Plus the new stray, Phil. Obviously a maximalist when it comes to felines. But, to be honest, we didn't buy any of them.
I love cats but I have a toddler. That’s enough work energetically for me right now lol
@@carolann811 Wow that's great 😻 Before I was born my mum had 13 and was known as the crazy cat lady 😜 She only had 4 when I came along but I think I've been under the paw my entire life 🤣
I can’t live WITH cats. I’m literally deathly allergic to them. I love cats, though. Such beautiful creatures. 💛
Good luck! :)
@@samc2 Thank you! :3
I mived house 3 times in 6 months and it's amazing how this mindset keeps your clutter to a minimum!
The money saved by not buying stuff is easily spent on journeys, trips, health improvement activities, etc.
I've never been an e-reader person before but it's gonna be so nice buying as many books as I want (or checking out as many as I want) and not having to make space for them somewhere in my apartment
agree, agree, agree
AND nothing beats writing in a book --it's such a joyful thing. (retired English teacher here...)
I love physical copies of books and movies. I always get them through thriftbooks since most of their stock is used items from libraries or whatnot. I also purged a lot of my art supplies. I found the mediums that work for me and I’m more than happy with my few quality items.
I'm really looking forward to the video about the 10 things you still buy :)
😂😂😂😂😂😂
People who have straight hair have NO IDEA how people with curly hair struggle everyday damn day hahaha. Seriously you can wake up every morning and your hair is already DONE. You can go out in the rain and it will never go FRIZZY. Your hair is always shiny and soft... Straight-haired people, please, appreciate your hair more...

I am reading e-books on my tablet and I could find pdf or epub type on libgen. Maybe it sound criminall little bit but I saved about $300. Thank you for your Minimal videos!
I know you mentioned the shirts you buy in another video but what brand are your go-to pants?
I littarly just bought a book haha I just really want to support the author ❤️
I really like your voice and the way you talk.
Wish I could shed my sugar addiction. Oh well. Go Lefie!
libraries don´t have every book, unfortunately you realize this when you are an academic xD
Discovered this channel yesterday afternoon and she's already my role model 😂 🙌 real af
Im in alignment will all but the last. I sew. Love it. Create with it. Great list. Ive converted my home to 100% cloth use. Saves so much.
VERY impressive. V E R Y!
I just got a "stop doing keto" ad on this video, Im taking that as a personal attack on your whole channel and I shall sue youtube for you
I wake now at 4 AM in Brazil because of your videos :D
it's so cool being wake at this time
You look so cute smiling
I don't know the reason but you look happy and that makes me happpy ^^_^^

how to quit sugar video please. Ur awesome : )
If you really want to downsize start little by little.🙃
The best souvenir ever is local chocolate! It doesn't need to be extra sweet.
I've returned just to see what Steve said,
As I was quite curious to know how he reacted. 😺
It's neat that Lefie mentioned you; what an honor to receive!
If for some reason she were to get a cat, I hope she'd name it Steve. 😎
@@Jaichbinhier :-)
Coffee definitely a thing!! Didnt realise how much i was spending until I was gifted an aeropress and now I just buy beans 😁
Added benefit of coffee whenever as well...
How do you keep your blacks black?
Love it when you laugh!
I'm glad I discovered your channel. Thank you for making content. Any advice specific to someone with a family trying to embrace the ideas you discuss?
"Audiobooks. They're available. You don't need to pay for that!"
While true with buying used copies of physical books or ebooks of bigtime writers, otherwise, please try not to torrent ebook files or listen to them on youtube if they're by an Indie writer. :(
yeah, that made me upset, I even rewound to see if I just misheard... books aren’t just available!! usually, a whole lot of people has been involved in the creation of a book. if everybody would have the oh-it’s-available-mindset, there would be close to no books at all...
I don't think she meant that. I'm pretty sure it was about apps like Audible, not torrenting books
She said it was from her library tho
I love the laughing energy in this one. Peace from NJ
It's the straightest thing about me 😂 I have curly hair and that's still relatable
I love houseplants but keeping them alive is.. 🙄 Now I just have a bunch of dead plants hanging up around my house like voodoo.
In your next video, can you explain how you choose the things you do buy and add to your life on a permanent basis (e.g. non consumable things) as I'd imagine it's a bit of a process :)
So interesting! All of your videos really make me rethink the way I live my life, and the adjustments I can make.
Starbucks coffee tastes like arse. My auntie loves it. I think she's mad.
I love reading them... and feeling their texture when I pass the page, smelling them, ...😊
I buy new books, second hand books and also I go to library.
Those are the ones that brighten my mood when i wear them cause i randomly catch those colors in my peripheral vision 😍
i love plants ...........outside the house😄
Buuuuut starbucks still is a treat every now and then
I used to buy a lot of beauty producs where now I have a few standards.
Waiiiiiit a second, I had no idea libraries have audiobook apps.. I just checked my library’s website and sure enough. Ooooo I’m so excite now!
reason for buying new books: supporting the author. i almost never buy books new when i read them first (usually go to the library) but when i really enjoyed a book, like the author and feel like i might read the book again i'll buy it (obvously doesn't have to be a physical book).
Gym membership. I used to go and use maybe three machines at the gym and take a class here and there. Then I realized are tons of free workout routines online. I’ve even done the old school jazzercise. Some people might need weights, etc. to maintain a specific physique. I personally can get a good workout without any equipment.
😍😘❤️❤️ I like the way you think, Smart simple practical… and that by it selfs is gorgeous
10 things i don't buy anymore include:
Toilet paper (i use a bidet)
Cleaning products (i make my own)
Plant foods (i'm a carnivore)
Sugary beverages (same as above)
Colored clothes (i wear black for simplicity)
Cars (i ride a bicycle)
Movie tickets (i have my own home theatre)
Physical books (i prefer audiobooks and like to support authors)
Home decor (i prefer the empty space)
New gadgets (i always try to buy second hand)
Sorry guys but starbucks is crap. I'm in Australia where we have so much better coffee available everywhere.
Love this. Thanks for sharing. Happy greetings from germany 😃🙋
I can't stand online l books I need to.hold the book for real...does anybody else have that issue ?...but luckily thrift stores have tonsss of books
People ask me how I can drink iced green tea with no sweetener and yeah I'm the annoying person saying any sweetener makes it "too sweet". Also I basically trained myself. I started with sugar and slowly added less and less honey or whatever and now I like it unsweetened
4:51 I, too, don't have pets or plants, saving time & money, but I do believe
I'd feel a little sad if there weren't any more "Consider getting a cat" comments from Steve. 😹
Agreed! But I do really doubt he’ll back down.
