    I work with a man who wears the same red polo every day & has for years. One day last year a lady made a rude comment to me about him doing this. I asked why it bothers her. Then I asked if she noticed that I had been wearing the same black tee every day as well. She had not & hasn’t spoken to me since 👍🏼

      @@Anna-pd6dc In the 30+ years I worked a brick and mortar job, I never came across any Human Resources policies stating you couldn't wear the same thing every day. It would probably fall under some type of discrimination if it was written that someone couldn't wear the same thing (in the sense of a uniform like Lefie's black T and pants) every day as there are some religious groups who do wear the same basic type of clothing on a daily basis. Even without the religious aspect, most dress code policies covered only how much of the person was covered if the clothes were clean or in good repair or if they had logos or type printed on them that might be offensive. Even that was a tricky subject. Most just opted for no logos at all.
      In reality, men in corporate America already wear the same thing every day. Most men who dress business stick with a dark-colored suit, white shirt, and change out the tie. It's essentially a uniform but no one questions that. It's only women who are supposed to wear something different every day.

    Me and my friend did this as a challenge, same clothes for a week. He had literally zero comments, yet I had many. It's not that it's impossible if you are a woman and I'm sure people would stop asking after a while, but there was a clear difference in the experience.

    • @JL-oi7tl
      @JL-oi7tl 3 года назад +34

      For sure! I don't know about what each of you wore, but I do think that the style and color can impact if people notice or not-- years ago I commented on a friend's shirt asking if his washer was broken because he had worn it three times that week and usually he didn't repeat clothing. But the only reason I noticed was because the shirt was light purple and had a pattern. If it was a black shirt, I wouldn't have noticed.
      I've seen many women say that if they are wearing a simple black dress multiple times a week to the office people don't notice- I imagine this would be the same for a black pantsuit.
      I know another option could be "the same" of something but in different colors. So let's say you love this particular dress but you also like colors. You could buy that same dress in a few colors. As long as you don't wear the same color in a row (or to a meeting always on the same day of the week... I've noticed that if you wear the same thing to a meeting that only happens tuesdays, people think you don't have other clothes) people will not notice that its the exact same dress.

(I also have bad skin - I'm 30 and have acne.) People can see me as unkempt, unprofessional, younger than I am, etc. I'm able to deal with that cost only because of other privileges in my life. I'm relatively thin, I'm white, I'm pretty highly educated, I have the ability to just not work if necessary and live on just my husband's income. Like it or not, we are all being judged by other people, and like it or not, they will make decisions based on those judgements. And in the case of how you dress at work, those judgements can include how "professional" you are, and those decisions can include if you get a raise or promotion. Beyond that the black shirts look presentable under my work uniforms, they don’t stand out in a crowd and I haven’t had any one of my friends or family ever question me on it.

    I’ve worn all black for over 15 years now. My boyfriend at the time complained that I never dressed up. He is my ex-boyfriend now and I couldn’t be happier. You got it right! Those who mind, don’t matter! I live a very successful life being a day trader in the Forex market, and it’s irrelevant to focus so much on what others think about your wardrobe. Usually those people who put so much effort into how they look, rarely put as much effort into their contribution to society. Nobody gives a shit what you look like in public, they are too concerned on what they look like. Lol. I’m so much happier simplifying my life! It’s very liberating!

    I have to chuckle, I still have my basic cotton black and blue shirts I bought ten years ago. Back then I think I was just going for cheap but as a byproduct they became a standard for me. Made it easy to be in control of the little things I could be at a time where it seemed like the world wanted to lay down a gauntlet of hard decisions. Now I look at the obnoxiously worn out neck fabric as a reminder that I did in fact survive this past crazy decade even if my shirts did not.
    Ideas that I don't remember who or where I heard it from, but in the day to day help center myself.
    "What can I do, right now, to change things for the better? If I can't do that change now don't worry myself with it."
    "Act on the things you have control of and have the patience to let that work for you."

    Some of those comments left on Matt's video were just pointing something out that Matt failed to recognize. The double standard does exist and we get to choose what to do with it and what we care about, etc. But there's value in recognizing that double standard so we can all become aware and be a part of the change. Not all of us are going to choose to wear the same shirt every day and that doesn't have to be the only way to make a shift here.

    Go check out WOOL T-SHIRTS (you'll be surprised on how thin the fabric can be)! You'll be able to wear the exact SAME t-shirt for days without smelling. Wool has incredible properties: keeps warm in the winter and cool in the summer, the less you wash it, the better it is (I have experienced wool nappy covers for my baby - to be combined with cloth nappies - because wool is also naturally waterproof thanks to lanolin: I can use the same cover for over a month without smelling wee, just hang it to aerate a bit and then it is good to use again). No creasing, dries super fast. From 8 t-shirts, you could probably go down to 3 or 4 if you want.
    The only downside I would say is that you want to hand-wash it (or in the washer with a wool program) to preserve the fibers, but as I said, you really don't have to wash it often at all.. Same goes with wool socks or any type of wool clothing.
    People like to recommend the brands Unbound Merino or Icebreaker and you'll find plenty of videos about it here on RUclips, nomads especially like to use it when they travel so they can pack extra-light :)

Then on Sat/Sun, I have 3 other shirts I "rotate" to whatever is clean or I feel like wearing that day, as my "variable day" or whatever. I can't even tell you how nice it is to know that on Wednesday I always wear a blue tank top. It's just something I started doing one day and from then on I've absolutely loved it. Removes unnecessary choice, and I always know what day it is. 😂 And, most important to me, I always have a top that I enjoy wearing and is comfortable. I think this is a useful video even for people not planning at all to do this, especially women
    I personally really enjoy wearing different clothes even if I always wear my hair the same way, the same jewelry and most of the time the same shoes
    It happened to me when I was very busy to wear the same thing /kinda/ everyday and tbh I felt unhappy about it and it brings me much more joy to be mindful about what I chose to wear
    + I feel the opposite of you, when I wear something too much I don’t like it as much when it comes to clothes
    This can’t be for everyone but I’m glad you chose to do whatever you want and that’s inspiring for anyone just to care less in general
    I do try to apply some of it to other aspect, as much as I like choosing a shirt or a skirt I absolutely don’t want to put this effort with socks for exemple and I tend to buy all the same black socks, only buy the same see through black tights etc
    If it’s a waste of time/chore for you you’re absolutely right to skip it and this shouldn’t be anyone else’s business !

    I´m trying to simplify my wardrobe too but mostly because of decision fatigue. I like the idea of having a set outfit for specific occasions like one thing I wear for work, one thing for working out ...I have thrifted a really nice dress that i think is perfect for new years eve parties or similar fancy events and I can already tell it´s a relief to know what I´d wear. One of the best decisions I made 2 years ago was to invest in a lovely bathing suit. I don´t need to worry about anything slipping around, it´s very bright and fun and I feel great wearing it. Now instead of trying on several ill-fitting bikini sets to go swimming I look forward to wearing my favorite every time.

  • @PumpkinMozie
    @PumpkinMozie 3 года назад +4

    While I do agree with the content of the video (ie, who cares if people think you’re weird/lazy, wear what you want), that’s not necessarily addressing the comments on Matt’s video. The comments were about how it’s easier and more acceptable for men, not that women CANT do it. We all know that we *can* do this, but as women we have more pressure to overcome. And if you’re someone who is self-conscious about your appearance, that’s going to give you a big mental barrier to overcome. It’s kind of just a fact. Of course we can choose to overcome that if we want. There’s just MORE to overcome if society is constantly scrutinizing your appearance (and if that kind of thing gets to you), which of course directly means women. Acknowledging that fact doesn’t necessarily mean that those commenters were “playing the victim.”

    • @Lefie
      @Lefie  3 года назад +3

      You’re absolutely right. I guess what I’m trying to do with this is not to claim it’s easy or difficult in comparison to men, but rather to provide some visibility that women are out here doing it and to confirm that it’s actually a lot easier than one might assume.
      I wouldn’t want other women to read those comments, think “you’re right, I’ve never seen a woman do that” and be discouraged from trying it themselves. I didn’t actually say “playing the victim,” just that “you’re not a victim.” This is because I myself oftentimes catch myself feeling sorry for myself when really the responsibility is in my hands to change the situation (or my perspective on the situation).
      Maybe if they see me out here and see that they won’t be alone in it, they’ll get encouraged and realize “if she can do it, so can I!”

I've never had anyone ask me why I only wear these and nothing else. If they noticed they never voiced a complaint or dislike for this. There were times when I worked in jobs which required a uniform or a certain dress code, but after work I changed into my t - shirts. I also purchased most of my clothes at thrift shops. I also have been wearing one pair of pants for several months. I have a few different pairs of shoes and boots which work well for multiple applications. I don't think about what someone might be thinking. I just wear what I want or need. As long as I'm dressed to protect myself from the elements and am not naked, that should be sufficient.
