Huge advocate for this. I've worn the same wardrobe for years (I have a spring/summer version and a fall/winter version), and while I constantly get made fun of ("I can't tell when this photo was taken because you're wearing the *SAME OUTFIT RIGHT NOW*"), it has made my morning routine oh-so much more simple.
I was wondering that too. I fell like a T shirt and jeans with one pair of shoes can be good for men in almost any situation, For women I feel it wouldn't be as versatile of an outfit.
I literally put on anything black and my mom says I look like I’m going to a funeral and that I should wear something bright, especially since I’m a girl 🤒
So true, in my former workplace always seemed to be an issue that I prefer to use black pants almost single day, I do not even attend clients, so they couldn't say this affects the companies image or something like that, the owner of the firm only thought it was weird to choose to use those same color every day, but those are easy to combine with different blazers and they look fine, I don't know what was the issue.
I wear mostly t-shirts and pants all the time, but I buy the same style in different colours. And I have just 2 different jackets for winter and fall, and plain black and navy blue hoodie. That way I'm not looking the same all the time.
To anyone who feels overwhelmed in their life, remember that you are never stuck. Sometimes it's just about saying no and not feeling guilty for needing some time to yourself.
One thing that i've found really helps (without going as far as Matt) is to find a color scheme for your wardrobe and stick to it. This tends to hit the sweet spot of allowing creative expression, but lessens the decision fatigue because everything more or less matches. That being said, you should be minimizing your closet often too.
I've only worn clothes that are grey for years now, only person it's ever bothered to my knowledge was the local church folk. They think im depressed lol
Friend did this as an art project about 10 yrs ago... And as a woman, she was certain someone would say something... Only one person - who she worked with - in the wardrobe department of a movie - after 8 months.... Conclusion: no one cares
That's very interesting. Perhaps others were just afraid to comment on it? I think a big part of it depends on your friend's personality and her connection with other people.
Decision fatigue is such an underestimated time waster. Thanks so much for your transparency Matt. I’ve found a lot of inspiration for my channel from you.
Your wardrobe actually inspired me to try this (can't believe they're discontinuing your shirt. It's the end of an era!). I've been wearing the same thing almost everyday for about a year now, and I've noticed a lot of the same benefits: the simplicity, the effortlessness, the compliments when I wear ANYTHING different on a laundry day (even just a different colored shirt lol). It's been nice having such a simple wardrobe, but I actually think I'm gonna stop soon. I miss experimenting with clothes and having fun with outfits. I still want some simplicity so I'm gonna try choosing a color palette and then sticking with that so I have more variety but still maintain some simplicity.
That's what I do I have five different pairs of shorts five different pairs of pants and about 12 different shirts. Still simple kind of minimalist. Gives me room to have different outfits but all my clothes is just one large load of laundry.
Oh, mate, you outdid me. I wore the same black dress for a year at University once.... I have other clothes but I just wanted to wear my "thinking dress", so I could stay focussed, concentrate, avoid distractions. I was always neat and clean and I carefully washed and ironed it, but despite all my pains to try and be clean, socially acceptable, not smelly and dirty, everybody still complained about fact that I wore same black dress everyday. I don't know why. I wasn't hurting anybody. I was doing a my assignments etc as required. Even one of the academics asked me if I had a problem since I appeared to be "grieving". I just gave him a compassionate, concerned, bewildered look and tried "No. I'm fine. Are you OK?" That caught h of guard and he stammered and stuttered, replying "Well, yyyes, of course... ". I could te he was perturbed about my black dress. So I reassured him all was well and tried "Well, that's nice to hear... I get a lot out of your very enlightening lectures... " He recovered his wit and joked "Well, that's good to hear. I hope they are not do enlightening and bright that their light of wisdom dazzles you and causes you to take refuge, by wearing that same black dress I notice you have worn every single day this academic year...". I reassured him that I could handle the light of his wisdom. That night I washed my black dress as usual and hung it out to dry. By morning it was gone. Some student had taken it as a trophy to win some bet he had with another who souvired it. When I realised my black dress was gone forever, I felt so angry and devastated and genuinely depressed. I just could not face the day without it. I missedlectures and just stayed in bed in a darkened room all day pondering life without my favourite black dress. Eventually I found a bright red one to emerge into the daylight in. I felt like a freak on public display and as soon as they saw me in a red dress they all cheered. It took me ages to readjust. After wearing the same comfortable old familiar dress every day for a year. It can be done. But I like to own other outfits, too, even if I seldom wear these. It enables me to feel "open to possibilities, opportunities...".When I wore black everyday I had deliberately planned to cut off all other possibilities for my life. No boyfriends, no partying, no fooling around, nothing. I was simply going to just do nothing but study. I had come from a very deprived background and was lucky to be at uni. I knew I was disadvantaged and needed to work harder than the rest because I was from a poor rural government school, not some prestigious urban private school. So I couldn't be like them. Plus I had no parents to pay my way and had to work in factories etc to get money to live on, in the times when uni students had to pay full tuition fees and there were no student loans like now. So wearing my same black dress everyday like a uniform did not bother me one bit. I could design and sew fine fashions and knew that, once through uni, if I saved some money working at various jobs I had, I could easily see up a fashionable wardrobe to strut around in, which I did do and then found little jobs modelling hair, clothed etc in swish Melbourne downtown fashion venues etc where I could also mix with all these glamourous models etc I found bored me shitless with their utter stupidity, but I must say, some were extremely beautiful. It was an easy but boring way to get money for doing nothing, just swanning around looking beautiful.
I can't believe they just stole your clothes like that! That's so rude and uncalled for. If I ever found out who did that to me, I would absolutely make them pay a hefty reimbursement. If they tried to wriggle their way out of the consequences, I'd let them know that respecting other people's belongings and life choices doesn't cost a penny.
Sorry to hear you lost your dress in such a mean way but don't let the dress or any other material object own you or define who you are and how you see yourself instead of the other way around. May everything you own bring you joy while you have them and may their loss never invoke such deep pain.
"No one commented on the shirt I wore on this channel" I REALLY want to know how much feminine presenting RUclipsrs relate to this and whether it's different. For one, I can chime in and say that feminine presenting professors get COURSE REVIEWS from students being like "your shoes are ugly" or "you need more colour in your wardrobe" than anything they've taught, and I can imagine that a visually based platform like RUclips is so much worse on this front.
As someone also in academia, I've heard very similar stories from many female colleagues. And there's empirical research which backs this up! www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/01/25/463846130/why-women-professors-get-lower-ratings?t=1602949184300
Thank you for this comment, I too wanted some gender analysis on this topic. Aside from the issue of femme-presenting people in the public eye (e.g. the examples of RUclips and academia), who often face comments and criticisms based on their appearance, making positive comments on appearance is one the staple conversational tools between women and can be a short cut to build rapport. It's a double-edged sword imo, because while it is frustrating that so much of women's value is placed on their appearance, when women compliment each other it can be very validating and supportive. So, wearing the same, simple wardrobe everyday, while reducing time spent on that aspect of life, could potentially draw more negative comments and lose out on positive social aspects for women.
So true! For women i think its a little different, i would love to wear the same shirt 24/7 but they do notice what i wear. Specially after having a baby, they categorize my clothes as "mom", "not-mom" 🙄 so, now i think "do i look like a mom? What does that even mean?" "
I could NOT get away with wearing the same shirt everyday unless it was a known 'thing'. I used to be a TV presenter too and if you present the news, no way in hell could you do this but one of our main tv presenters (a man) wore the same suit for a year and no one noticed. People actually critique female presenters on their outfit choices or if they dare repeat clothing! In saying all of this I do what Matt does in real life often for the same reasons as him and I love it haha but tbh I feel a lot of pressure as a female presenting person to switch it up, so at home it's often the same, leaving I switch it up.
My staple outfit since high school has been a black top and jeans. In high school adults would come up to me and make rude remarks about it. Interesting enough, it wasn't my peers being nasty about it. Today I stick to black, blues and greys. When I change it up, people compliment me or look at me differently. Lol
Matt: I've worn the same shirt for 3 years Ben 10: same here bruv. Barney: you've not been in a hot costume for 3 years, have you? Dora the Explorer: you guys haven't worn the same clothes through the muddy jungle for 3 years, so shush.
I thought, because of the title, that you were wearing literally the same t-shirt every day and I had so many questions. Like, how did you deal with wear and tear, did you wash it every night, and so on. hahahah
I agree, I usually wear same kind of clothes not even same and some of my friends think I should wear different things and change my style. And some of them never wears the same clothing twice a week.
It may be but honestly screw socially acceptable. I don't think anyone actually cares. I wear the same thing to my office job everyday: black culottes, a plain black long sleeve top and a black high neck jumper. I also stopped buying party dresses. I have 1 dress for parties/weddings/work events. I just bought one dress that looks great on me and I'm happy to wear it over and over. Once you start doing it it's fine. Everyone is too worried what others are thinking of them to care about what you're wearing 😂
Yup...I respond from experience. "You always wear that shirt!".... I actually have 5 of them in black, 3 in gray, 2 in blue, a purple and a maroon... But ok. 🤷🏾♀️ Laundry day is really easy. 😁
*be honest matt, it’s because it goes well with your biceps.* seriously though, interesting subject. I haven’t put too much thought into how much time is wasted on choosing clothes, when no one really cares about what others are wearing. (unless fashion is one of someone’s passions of course)
I’m in the Army, so I wear a uniform everyday. I love that I don’t have to think about what I’m going to wear. I like this concept of yours.. I will think about giving it a try.
This is probably one of the best justifications for a minimalist wardrobe. High quality information with personality that invokes thoughtful consideration of your own decision making! Thanks for sharing!!
As a woman I wear the same type t-shirt every day in 2 colours and in rotation with 4 trousers. Nobody have said anything the last 6 months... nobody cares what I wear but me ! Life is complicated enough and it makes me feel goed to have such a simple wardrobe !
But not everything have to be about others. I have around 100 clothes, jackets, ties, etc and I wear them only for me. I could'nt care less if anyone notices me or not. I dress up for my sake. I enjoy it and think it's fun.
For work I have the same exact polo in 5 colors and the same skirt in 3 neutral(basic) colors. That's the only thing I wear. I do change up shoes and outerwear 🤣. Outside of work I do have a decent amount of variety.
I'm sure there are dozens of t shirt makers that would line up to sponsor a video on wearing the same shirt every day. Have 10 send you samples. Then the one you love you agree to a sponsorship in return for a lifetime supply of dark charcoal shirts. Problem solved :)
I feel like it shouldn't be an issue. But as a woman I think its harder for us to only have one or a few things to wear. Its not because I can't, I just feel as the pressure to wear different things is more intense. But like you said, if someone else has a problem with it, they can eff off 😂
It's not harder for women. There are several women who have made similar videos to this one. The truth is that people dont notice you or what you wear as much as you think they do
Steve Jobs did it, Einstein did it, Matt does it and so does my husband (he wears a blue check shirt and jeans every day). I also wear a uniform... jeans and a tank top in summer, jeans and a sweater in winter. I have a couple of dresses for fancy schmancy but that’s like never these days.
@@shounakhinge8 not really the point but ok. All these retail stops, clothing brands rely on their designs and sales across the year of their clothing. Think how much money some clothing brands and retailers are worth. If we all brought basic shirts in bulk online, so many large and small businesses will fail and lead to unemployment.
@@chriswyatt9869 well this reminded something happened in Ottoman Empire. When the printing press introduced to the empire penmen in the country strongly stand against it, since it will kill their industry and could hurt calligraphy really hard. So because of the penmen, Ottomans started to use printing press so much later than Europe. This was one of the biggest reason why Ottomans couldn't really catch Europe's level of education etc
That was the first thing I noticed about you and why I am a current fan of your channel. The charcoal grey shirt in every thumbnail is what brought me to and continuously back to your videos.
I know Matt’s talking about wearing the same shirt every day but can we talk about how he also probably had the same biceps every day since the day he was born?
As a female, I got tired of the theater of painting my face and dressing up. So I bought a shit ton of black and grey shirts, and camo pants. And tossed most of my makeup. The end result was amazing. I am comfortable with me, don’t care what others think and it must show. Because men hand me phone numbers and ask me out daily. And I’ve found that women are jealous. Its all in your attitude. I live my life to the fullest. I do me quite well.
Cool! I was just wondering how to do this as a woman...wearing the same thing every day sounds a bit too much but I do hate choosing clothes and how much energy and time it takes...this puts a new perspective to it :)
Patty Stone thank you! Thank you for using your brain and not your mouth and emotions to control yourself and live your life. This is what most people need to do!! It will change their life and be so much better.
I've learned this from you like a year ago. Since then, using the same black shirt was a relief on my day since I'm really overweight and was always concerned about how I'd look. This helped me with anxiety and self esteem. Thank you.
This is an interesting perspective. While I do agree that making too many decisions can be exhausting, I like having the freedom to change things up from day to day. I.e. choosing a different shirt every day, having different foods for breakfast, changing up my workouts, etc. This is just my own preference but great video.
Could you get by on a wardrobe this simple?

I can relate to horrible fashion sense but not taking too long choosing what to wear. I wear whatever catches my eyes, in my horribly kept closet
Petition for J.Crew to relaunch the charcoal t-shirt in the colorway "Matt Grey"...?
I want to stock up on it for some odd reason
Plot Twist : Matt only created this video so that he could vent out about the Fact J-crew is not making his color of shirts anymore
I wonder if a woman could pull this off without an insane amount of criticism 🤔
I was wondering that too. I fell like a T shirt and jeans with one pair of shoes can be good for men in almost any situation, For women I feel it wouldn't be as versatile of an outfit.
I was wondering the same and I believe the answer is no 😕
I literally put on anything black and my mom says I look like I’m going to a funeral and that I should wear something bright, especially since I’m a girl 🤒
“Everything you've ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.” Sharing some positivity with all of you. Keep smiling you are amazing.
Bruce Wayne: “does it come in black?”
Lucius Fox: “no.”
That being said, you should be minimizing your closet often too.
true!!! movies do that too! the color scheme in Joker--cray
I've only worn clothes that are grey for years now, only person it's ever bothered to my knowledge was the local church folk. They think im depressed lol
*Every child that had to wear school uniform:* "that's all?? Only 3 YEARS?!"
I am wearing my uniform now for 3 years and have 2 years left. After holidays I always look forward wearing it. Is that just me?
hahahaha right?!
Haha, I’ve been wearing the same uniform for 11 years now. Ahah, I don’t mind it though
9 years for me but 5 different uniforms lol
I've been forced in a uniform since I was 3

You’re so right!! I actually spend so much time thinking about what to wear and I always get overwhelmed!
I think a big part of it depends on your friend's personality and her connection with other people.
at this point, the shirt is Matt, and it is wearing the same human everyday.

"I wore the same shirt every day for 3 years."
"Those are rookie numbers"
That's crazy..lol..😂😂😂😂

If they tried to wriggle their way out of the consequences, I'd let them know that respecting other people's belongings and life choices doesn't cost a penny.
bro you wrote a hell of a text
Sorry to hear you lost your dress in such a mean way but don't let the dress or any other material object own you or define who you are and how you see yourself instead of the other way around. May everything you own bring you joy while you have them and may their loss never invoke such deep pain.
"...not mentioning any names... my wife" - well, technically you didn't mention any names there, so you're safe. right?
"No one commented on the shirt I wore on this channel"
I REALLY want to know how much feminine presenting RUclipsrs relate to this and whether it's different.
Lol
Matt: I've worn the same shirt for 3 years
Ben 10: same here bruv.
Barney: you've not been in a hot costume for 3 years, have you?
Dora the Explorer: you guys haven't worn the same clothes through the muddy jungle for 3 years, so shush.
I thought, because of the title, that you were wearing literally the same t-shirt every day and I had so many questions.
Like, how did you deal with wear and tear, did you wash it every night, and so on.
hahahah
i feel like this is significantly more socially acceptable for men than for women.
I agree, I usually wear same kind of clothes not even same and some of my friends think I should wear different things and change my style. And some of them never wears the same clothing twice a week.
Yes, I think that is an aspect he should have talked about...
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONIN THIS YOU ARE RIGHT
It may be but honestly screw socially acceptable.
But ok. 🤷🏾♀️

Problem solved :)
good point!!!!
Get rid of everything you haven't worn in a year. Such a good advice. I've heard it a milion times but it didn't strike until now.
I feel like it shouldn't be an issue. But as a woman I think its harder for us to only have one or a few things to wear. Its not because I can't, I just feel as the pressure to wear different things is more intense. But like you said, if someone else has a problem with it, they can eff off 😂
Watch this video. It adresses the matter in a brief and smart way

there several women out there making a lot of money on spreading the idea of simple wardrobe and wearing the same 33 or 21 items. :)

@@VictorSamuelMosqueraArtamonov not really, good economies aren't built on luxuries as foundations.

I am comfortable with me, don’t care what others think and it must show. Because men hand me phone numbers and ask me out daily. And I’ve found that women are jealous. Its all in your attitude. I live my life to the fullest. I do me quite well.

This is an interesting perspective. While I do agree that making too many decisions can be exhausting, I like having the freedom to change things up from day to day.
