Long-time minimalist here. Yes. But, I use a bicycle as my main mode of transportation, so my pants see a lot more sweat and friction (and consequently lint) than your usual pants, so they do actually need to get washed more often. Oh and when I do wash them, I put on my second pair of pants. People, don't be so minimalist that it's impractical, please. Trust me, you never know when you'll need a second pair, especially if you're in my position and wear happens more.
In the winter though when I use the bus they legit don't get smelly or dirty. Oh yeah I live in Slovenia where public transportation is actually clean, so no shit here.
I feel that! Also on the bike alot and when I work as a barista I sometiget milk stains somewhere and then it's better to wash them... always inside out tho. And recently I noticed that I couldn't remember when I last washed that one pair lol.
Also from Slovenia. I am not a minimalist. Had 1 pair of jeans when I was a kid (YU at that time 😂) washing them once a week. Now I have some of them and wash them a lot. Don't like the smell after some time, but this is just my preference. And yes, you need at least 2 pants.

Was waiting for the reveal that this was a light hearted metaphor to society’s reaction to hearing about minimalism for the first time in light of his ten years of minimalism. But nope. Just a video about pants.
I think it's very obvious when people double-wear their clothes....it has a distinctive unwashed body smell. I think the person wearing it just gets used to the smell. Like people that never wash their car or people that always have windows closed in their house without airing it out. It's rude to say something but if you've experienced it with other people than the same is probably happening to you.

Double-wear? That's insane, if we're not talking about workout gear. 5-7 days consecutive days of wear at least, before there's some smell.

Biomedicine student here, this not washing your trousers thing is a recipe for fungal, bacterial skin infections and other fun stuff.
They air out in the night. Bacteria and fungal neither really live on dry clothing in any meaningful way. The sweat could irritate the skin, but if there was enough sweat for that it would also smell and therefore be washed.
Even though you study the field it's obvious your comment is just a throw without actually looking into the specifics. Also, a lot of people freeze their jeans doing this.
@LarryJL if I wear my jeans more than 2 days at work, the oil, grease, dirt, makes them smell like a swamp. Not washing ur jeans tells me you don't do any real work other than sitting in a desk chair.
@@mattysee24 As said in the video like 10 times, circumstances can vary. And really pretentious to think that not getting sweaty isn't "real work".
You must be fun at parties.
Unless you have a PhD with a very high h-index and i10-index, no one cares about what you say
this is true for most clothes (excluding socks/underware/undershirts) imo. I got really sick of shit shrinking when I used to buy fast fashion products and just started smell testing things. clothes usually dont get dirty from wearing them once, makes no sense to wash something just because you wore it.
This makes no sense. I definitely sweat mildly at times, I have dogs, when I go to certain restaurants my clothes stink like food. What, the smell just goes away or you get used to it? Roll the dog hair off and keep wearing them? Lol I definitely don’t wash right away and wear sometimes 2-3 times but I can smell them and smell myself eventually and it’s not okay.
@RickReviews that definitely sounds like even more work than tossing it in the washing machine with the rest of your laundry
exactly.
Or just air them out. Personally, I wash my jeans after two uses or if I spill food on them but all other pants are washed regularly. If I don't want to wear them down I'll either hand wash, spot treat or steam clean between washes.
Some fabrics can release smells when left in cooler air (which is why someone suggested freeze cleaning? I think that's what it's called); I just air them out over night. If they still smell they go to the wash. If not, yay me.
This video isn't for everyone, but we never know who this could help or why. The may not implement things exactly like Matt, but it could help someone. Regardless if we agree or not, have a nice day. :)
As a woman I'm literally laughing at the fact that Matt smells his pants around the knees. That is NOT the area of my jeans I need to check for smells...
I try to wash my pants as little as possible but never get longer than max 2 weeks without smells or other stains 😉
(Edit: you don't need to explain to me that smelling there is a bit weird for the video. My point is that having a vagina makes it nearly impossible to not wash jeans for three months (also this differs per person of course))
yeah i was thinking about this LOL
🙌
Not to mention, do men's jeans not stretch out at all? Even my preshrunk 100% cotton Levi's stretch out a little and don't fit well after a certain amount of uses.
Exactly why I have to wash the jeans more often. Nobody wants to smell that.
@@megancurtis9502 They do stretch. But as a fellow skinny jean wearer, I can say that they don't really stretch enough that they don't fit well. They're kinda tight out of the dryer and they loosen up after a bit of wear to a nice comfortable place. Bigger jeans might loosen up too much and become too large, but that's all part of the process of finding the right ones!
It’s rare that I find a stranger on RUclips speaking TO ME, but this was all so nice and validating to hear. I accidentally fell into not washing my jeans about ten years ago when I simply realized that I didn’t like the way my jeans looked or felt after washing them- so I started going longer and long without washing until eventually I just NEVER washed them. I’ve shared the same experiences as far as replacing due to small holes after a year or three, and also buying jeans you can barely button because by the time you replace them they’re three sizes bigger. They’ll stretch where they need to and stay tight where they can, becoming a perfectly tailored pair over time. I find about eight months in, a pair of jeans is absolutely perfect in every way. I tend to keep only two pairs- one that’s new and one that’s old. When the old one is toast I buy another new one and the old “new pair” becomes the new “old pair.”
Lol you found your justification to have smelly jeans I guess
Thanks for giving me permission to never wash my pants and more importantly wear the same pants everyday. I've been wanting to do this for my whole life 😂
I get that it makes your pants last longer, but personally, especially during the pandemic but even before that, I just feel like if my clothes have touched anything outside of my home, I want to wash them. I don't wanna put worn clothes back in drawers with clean clothes, I don't wanna sit on surfaces in my home in clothes that have been on surfaces outside. I read this thing a few years ago about "no outside clothes in bed" and I think I kinda took that rule and applied it to my entire home in general. So if I come from outside, the first thing I always do is change into fresh clothes for inside. And if I've only worn the pants once and they're still fresh, I leave them in a separate pile to wear again soon instead of putting them back in the drawer with the other clothes.

Thanks, I always thought I was a weirdo

I do this but I have OCD, I didn't know other people did. As long as it's not a bother, being clean is good!
this feels so strange but i appreciate you talking about topics like this.
I don’t care how many people tell me I’m not supposed to wash my jeans. I’ve been forced to do it before on trips and they feel disgusting pretty quickly as the dead skin cells and sweat collect in them. Deodorizing them or putting them in the freezer doesn’t fix how nasty it feels.

literally breathing makes me sweat. and this video triggered me to no end XD
I started doing this last year, I think it depends on the type of jeans. I have a pair that's fairly elastic and they do seem to pick up crap over time. I threw them in the wash accidentally once and they did come out looking and feeling better, but I want to test this with a more "original" pair of jeans. Still, I don't think we need to wash as much as we do, and they last much longer if we don't.
Matt, Matt, Matt. I knew this day would come. You've finally lost me. 😂😂
It's worth mentioning that the material pants are made of can impact smell, comfort, and longevity. Fabrics with artificial fibers and blends may be more comfortable, but they get stinky faster (and the smell is far worse imo), and trap heat rather than allowing air to flow through. If you live in a hot climate, I highly recommend a cotton/linen wardrobe (outside of workout clothes).
Levi's still sells 100% cotton jeans, but they can be harder to find in stores (at least for women, in my experience). Be sure to check the label; many times I've come across pants with the same cut but different fabric blends.

Kind of the same except I like to wash raw denim after about a month and after two months, because fresh indigo has a pretty sour and nasty smell in itself and I feel like it gets worse when it's saturated with sweat. I also like to change jeans every day to make them wear slower, same as you do with shoes to let them dry out. I used to tear jeans up after 6 months because I sweat nitric acid and it's nice not to shred them as fast anymore.
would also recommend looking into mending (and maybe a bottle of black fabric dye for) your old pair as a backup for those times Nat is mad you're without pants
^
You aren’t a man who spills stuff on his jeans…
Yea as someone with a toddler, my jeans washing has defo gone up exponentially 😅
On the topic of only having one pair. I've always had a hard time seing the use of having more than one type of cloting for everyday use. Throughout my life I've from time to time asked people if it's wierd to just buy two pairs of the same jeans and the answer has always been a yes, haha. Which I've never understood. I was in heaven when I realized that at least with socks and underpants I can just buy the same model in bulk because no one will notice. And it's great! And now in this recent year I finally dared to take it to the t-shirts as well (maybe thanks to Matt here). I bought 10 white identical t-shirts and 10 identical long sleeved shirts. It feels great! I never have to choose the best one in the morning, or be sad that all my good shirts are dirty and I only have the bad ones left.
Anyway, I do have several copies of them though instead of only one. Same if I did this with Jeans. I've always only had 2 pairs of jeans, but it's been different models. I'll probably go with one from now on, but still 2. Not one. :)
Lovely message I appreciate your effort fam
When your clothes are soaked in grime or mud and sweat from doing manual labor, you'll change your tune. If you're literally a wall-flower with a pair of denims, then sure, I don't see why you'd need to wash your pants either...
Just what I was thinking. My husband comes home covered in sawdust and grime (teaches high school shop) and I wash his jeans weekly.
Absolutely. I hear people talking about how jeans don't get dirty and I look at mine -- covered in actual DIRT -- and think huh??? But between gardening, dogs, yardwork, horses, and farm chores, yeeeeaaaah my jeans are gonna get dirty.

Okay I’ve been trying this since this video came out. I wear a pair of black old navy jeans about 5 times a week and probably wash them about every month and they still look brand new. I usually get holes in the upper thigh/crotch area after a few months but these are still holding strong. It’s a bit harder to keep light colored jeans clean looking for as long but I highly recommend it with black jeans.

Thank you, Matt, for bringing up this topic!!
Just at the end of last year I realized, that I rarely wash my pants, too!
First I thought: Oh, oh. What am I doing? :D
But watching your video makes me feel smart ;)
I've a kind of secod hamd experience with unwashed pants. They smell like a wet dog or a wet dirty rag for cleaning the floor... (they were dry). Maybe the owner doesn't smell that because he's used to it!! It is a neurogical adaptation mechanism in our brain. We adapt to constant smell around. I was not adapted and the unwashed pants were really smelly! :)
The same experience that made me stay away from not washing my pants
You have to be extremely dirty not to wash any of your cloths especially what you wear around your groin area 🤮 Jeans always smell under.
Yh
I think that depends on the person. My everyday clothes don't smell unless I leave them on the floor, I hang them when I'm not wearing them. When I smell my trousers that I haven't washed for months and compare them to a clean pair, the difference in smell is hardly noticeable. Did just make couple friends try and tell which trousers were clean just from smell, and they couldn't.
My exercise clothes smell, there is no going around that, and I wash them weekly. I think my everyday clothes don't smell because I don't really sweat unless I'm exercising.
@@-Anjel it is proven that people stop feeling the smell they are used to. There was a woman who had 15 cats and everybody said her house is deadly stinky - and she could smell flowers but not her cats and kept telling there is no bad smell in her home... I assure you homeless people also don't smell themselves.
For people who has already watched the video : I don't remember correctly whether it was the Levi's CEO or if it was a promotion from the brand, the message was about not to wash your jeans but to freeze them by putting it in a refrigerator. Well whoever said that was scientifically wrong anyway. They say freezing the jeans would kill the harmful bacteria. But what they didn't knew was that the same bacteria comes back to the jeans after it's taken out of the refrigerator and when it reaches room temperature. Another thing about this practice of not washing jeans will not be applicable to everyone. It depends on your skin type, how much you sweat, the weather around you or where you live. These factors will determine if you can follow this practice in anyway. Also take into consideration about the profession like whether you are someone who works from home all the time or you have to go out everyday; this no wash routine might not be a problem for the work from home person granted if all the previously mentioned conditions are also in favor.
The oghjkkur

Woah! Matt, you really look younger :D
About this hole in your previous pants - you can repair them at the tailor. I did that with my secondhand black pants and tightening the waist at first so overall I didn't spend that much money on them, there's an easy way to repair these types of holes cause I did that once and it's great but another hole showed up (almost same spot as yours :D) recently, so they will visit tailor again and I will probably have to loose some weight :P
This video will definitely change the world 😂 haha you're the best
