Don't feel ashamed. Some people know how to do this at a young age and some people don't. Just depends on how you were raised. I've never been taught any of this stuff which is why I'm teaching myself it now.

Sorry to break it to you but if you really care about the environment, doing cold wash and dry or washing less often is the least of your worries. A single car trip to work is worth thousands of wash cycles, or even just a few days of running the heater or ac.

Wool shrinks/felts with heat and friction. The spin on a machine is perfect to getting all the water out since wool holds 80% of its weight in water. An easy way to wash wool is to place in a large bowl of lukewarm water, add about a nickel size amount of a conditioning shampoo (wool is hair) and squeeze gently, then let soak for about 10 mins - more if stinky, squeeze out or place on a spin only load in wash, rinse in fresh water until water is clear and squeeze again. Roll in a towel as another option to remove excess water, lay flat and reshape on towel or rack to dry. For ironing wool use a damp, same color tee/towel/pillowcase, make sure it is re-dampened and not dried out. This is a type of steaming that won't leave the wool shiny, especially at the seams and pockets. Hope this helps and thanks for letting me add my 2 cents :)
The most comprehensive laundry video on RUclips! Many items I partially dry in a machine dryer and then finish drying on a rack. The fastest way to damage or destryo clothing is to 'bake it' in a dryer.
Finally someone as neurotic about properly washing my clothes as me! I have to do all the laundry because otherwise my wife will just mix everything without regard for material or color, and refuses to turn them inside out.

One thing I would recommend is to invest in a decent garment steamer. Great for removing wrinkles on all types of fabrics whether it be cotton, synthetic, or silk. I also use it to give my clothing a quick refresh between washes.
i always have a spray bottle with clear water at hand whilst ironing, sometimes tap water can have a lot of chalc in it and can ruin your iron, as well as your washing machine 😶@@TimDessaint

I'm gonna share some things my mom has taught me... Liquid soap can be expensive so typically I use mexican powder soap like Foca, Ariel, and Roma. They sell in big 11 pound sacks and not a lot is needed for laundry and my clothes still smell good :) not sure if it sells everywhere, but I'm guessing they should be available in mexican stores? Oh and the good ol' bar of Zote, and it's safe for delicate skin too! My mom showed me that with clothes that are covered in grime or grease it's best to use Dawn platinum dish soap (ofc assuming the clothes aren't delicate) and put the machine on heavy duty and warm/hot water and it cleans it all out. Not sure if anyone needs this advice but I'm just sharing my knowledge 😊

Nicely done Tim! I'm fanatical about my laundry! My wife is always like, "I can't believe you're doing a separate load for just that one item..." Also, the laundry bags, like you showed, are a lifesaver! I use them for lots of things, especially shirts that have mother of pearl buttons, as it keeps them from getting chipped.
I've been air-drying (after spin drying) my clothes for years, my family always attacks me for doing this calling me poor, but I still have cardigans, t-shirts, sweaters and scarves from 12 years ago in excellent condition. However, I never considered the weight induced stretching before! I will definitely make sure to lay out heavier clothes like sweaters on a flatter surface. I also use a more eco-friendly detergent with oxy clean booster, i add vinegar to detergent if needed (never mix vinegar and oxyclean!) I recently started to wash my precious clothes inside out and fold my knits/sweaters, it has been a game-changer! I bought a fuzzy remover recently as well, I only used it on my sofa but I can't wait to use it on sweater fuzzies! this was very informative!
Omg yess!! The only upside to having a rare heart condition was losing 100 lbs with in a year and some change but I now have to replace my entire wardrobe with appropriate fitting clothes. But this is also the first time I’m shopping and finally have endless options and not feel insecure. I want to add on some info between detergent types: *Powder* - better for hard water because softening additives are more stable in powder form. Use warm or hot water washes with powder detergent if you have very hard water. Great at removing carbon based stains. *Liquid* - required for "speed" cycles, better at removing greasy stains. Softening additives are often omitted from liquid detergents because these loose efficacy quickly in liquid form. Usable at all water temps and easily usable to pretreat laundry. *Tablets* - just don't...horrible in front loaders, cannot control dosing and 9/10 times you'll overdose your load. Take forever to dissolve so you end up with continued dosing during rinses. Most expensive and wasteful option. *Fabric Softener* - Fabric softener was created back in the day specifically for clothing made from synthetic fibers. It will build up on your clothing, is considered the most toxic laundering product since it isn't washed from clothing and has direct contact with your skin. As long as you're properly laundering your clothing it isn't needed. Save yourself, your clothing and the environment by skipping this all together.

Do not use fabric softener on towels. It makes them less absorbant. That's why rough hotel towels, washed at high temp and never with softener, are so absorbant

After watching this video (months ago) I bought a metal framed drying rack from Amazon. It folds up flat when not in use (which itʻs mostly always in use). I never really knew about these before watching your video. My mom always dried clothes on an outside line, and on a wooden rack over the bathtub in the winter, for a few big heavy items that she couldnʻt dry outside. I love using my new metal drying rack! Iʻve put it in the garage where itʻs handy and drips donʻt matter. I mostly bought it so I could dry several hand-washed cashmere sweaters at the same time over winter, but I use it all the time for everything else too. Thank you for the tip! I think my electric bill has gone down since buying this.

Do not use fabric softener on towels! They absorb moisture much less effectively if you wash them with it. Also, if a piece of clothing stinks a lot (smoke, starting mold, etc), put white vinegar (or normal 8% vinegar will also do) in the fabric softener bin. This is a very effective way to remove smell. If something smells a lot, put in more vinegar than you would fabric softener and use the "extra water" setting to make sure your clothes don't smell of vinegar afterwards)
Hey Tim, thanks for the video but can i ask a question, so when I separated the clothes into different piles, do I run the washer 6-7 times in a row? And what if i dont have many clothes and when I separate it they become small piles?

Tim these past couple weeks iv'e washed ALL my clothes again & again because I think there not clean or my t shirts are way too wrinkly and I think this really helped my mom has taught me not to put a huge load in the wash or dryer because they don't get properly cleaned or dried probably because theirs no air from way top much material in the machine so thxs

I want to add on some info between detergent types:
*Powder* - better for hard water because softening additives are more stable in powder form. Use warm or hot water washes with powder detergent if you have very hard water. Great at removing carbon based stains.
*Liquid* - required for "speed" cycles, better at removing greasy stains. Softening additives are often omitted from liquid detergents because these loose efficacy quickly in liquid form. Usable at all water temps and easily usable to pretreat laundry.
*Tablets* - just don't...horrible in front loaders, cannot control dosing and 9/10 times you'll overdose your load. Take forever to dissolve so you end up with continued dosing during rinses. Most expensive and wasteful option.
*Fabric Softener* - Fabric softener was created back in the day specifically for clothing made from synthetic fibers. It will build up on your clothing, is considered the most toxic laundering product since it isn't washed from clothing and has direct contact with your skin. As long as you're properly laundering your clothing it isn't needed. Save yourself, your clothing and the environment by skipping this all together.

Do not use fabric softener on towels. It makes them less absorbant. That's why rough hotel towels, washed at high temp and never with softener, are so absorbant

After watching this video (months ago) I bought a metal framed drying rack from Amazon. It folds up flat when not in use (which itʻs mostly always in use). I never really knew about these before watching your video. My mom always dried clothes on an outside line, and on a wooden rack over the bathtub in the winter, for a few big heavy items that she couldnʻt dry outside. I love using my new metal drying rack! Iʻve put it in the garage where itʻs handy and drips donʻt matter. I mostly bought it so I could dry several hand-washed cashmere sweaters at the same time over winter, but I use it all the time for everything else too. Thank you for the tip! I think my electric bill has gone down since buying this.
I actually use a protective cloth when ironing my cotton shirts - and I iron them on the inside.

Do not use fabric softener on towels! They absorb moisture much less effectively if you wash them with it.
Also, if a piece of clothing stinks a lot (smoke, starting mold, etc), put white vinegar (or normal 8% vinegar will also do) in the fabric softener bin. This is a very effective way to remove smell. If something smells a lot, put in more vinegar than you would fabric softener and use the "extra water" setting to make sure your clothes don't smell of vinegar afterwards)

Hey Tim, thanks for the video but can i ask a question, so when I separated the clothes into different piles, do I run the washer 6-7 times in a row? And what if i dont have many clothes and when I separate it they become small piles?

Tim these past couple weeks iv'e washed ALL my clothes again & again because I think there not clean or my t shirts are way too wrinkly and I think this really helped my mom has taught me not to put a huge load in the wash or dryer because they don't get properly cleaned or dried probably because theirs no air from way top much material in the machine so thxs
This is doable if you only have such tiny amounts of wash.

for the ironing: i use a piece of thin cotton/linnen between my iron and delicate clothes, works fine
Great vid, thanks for the tips! I actually stopped using fabric softener, and all my clothes are dark/black to avoid the headache of sorting by color (I also don't have delicates, so not headache there either.)
