I'm 42 and only last week did I consider the possibility that I might have ADHD. Never came up once growing up. I felt like this guy made a video specifically about me. I'm getting evaluated by my doctor next week.
it took me 4 breaks to reach the end xD + 10-12 times going 10sec backwards the video bcs i got triggerd to some of his words and start thinking vividly my thoughts/expiriences about it xD
Lmao me 🤣, its 5 mins later you realize that you zoned out or took 15 mins to write a comment while you forgot to pay attention on the video. And you never want to read about ADHD, its videos or maybe small reddit posts
MY brother failed high school. He was ADHD. Expelled from 4schools. He is 34 now, he’s doing his first year as an orthopedic surgeon . Proud sister ...
not me reading the comment and being distracted from watching the video lmao. And the whole "cant do my work until its an emergency" is my biggest struggle with adhd and the reason why i often times stay up late finishing things. CANT FOCUS
@@kluxklean7679 I'm 100% sure it's generalization because I was born with ADHD but didn't get diagnosed with it till I was in 2nd grade, if it was I'm sure there would be a cure to it but there is none. Yes there's medicine for it but it won't get rid of it, it'll just help you do daily things for only a couple of hours
This man almost made me cry. I have been struggling with these experiences my whole life and people have always brushed them off as just a lack of discipline and motivation. Hearing him perfectly describe everything that I have gone through just makes me emotional. Thank you.
I teared up too, I had a lot of trouble in school when I really wanted to succeed. I’d disappoint my dad and he’d brush my thoughts of maybe having ADD/ADHD as me making excuses. Being out of high school now it’s become a goal of mine to be sophisticated and a lot of the people I look up too have that and a great memory to go along with it, I’m just so hesitant on taking aderral because for one I don’t want to have to depend on medication and what if you become addicted? It’s a weird spot to be in but nice to be validated on what I think is wrong upstairs 😂
I feel you. I have the same issues. I actually switched to audiobooks because it takes me so long to read a book due to reading the same paragraph multiple times, or having to go back several pages to read something again to get context for something later because I either forgot what happened, or...... shit.... oh yeah, completely missed something. Even with audio books, I find myself rewinding upwards of a half hour because I zoned out and missed a bunch of shit. I have been independent of my medication for 5 years now. I am a full time student and working full time. For the first time in my life I have maintained a 3.8 GPA and am set to graduate next year. Just wish I hadn't waited so long to return to school sometimes. My biggest issue that I am dealing with while being unmedicated is like he said, putting things off until it's more of an emergency. My procrastination has gotten so bad, but I am able to complete all of my coursework in about 12 hours and submit within an hour of the deadline no problem. My biggest fear is if I continue staying off my medication, that I will not be able to enter my career field and be successful (computer programming). Programming deals with deadlines, and I am incapable of completing things prior to a deadline in my current form. Perhaps I should find a doc and get back on my medication, but I have gone so far and proven so many doctors wrong who told me I would never be able to function without it. The doctors were simultaneously correct, and incorrect. I can function fine, I just have a hard time with time management. In fact, I have no sense of time. 5 minutes can pass, and it will feel like 5 hours. 3 hours will pass, and it will feel like only seconds has passed. I only know the days of the week by whether or not I work, or whether something is due and I need to knock it out in an hour......... It's frustrating, but sometimes I feel like a superhero at the same time. Now that I've finished this comment, I need to rewind about 5 minutes.... I think. [edited to make the comment less word vomit] [edit again, I completely forgot that months will pass without me realizing it as well... But I think that may have to do with aging.... Though I'm only 30, so time shouldn't be moving that fast yet...]
Yea either depression or anxiety there. You have to figure that out first. Learn to love yourself again and don't take life to seriously. when I start feeling that way I remind myself that we are all just bits of matter and none of it really matters. So just enjoy this life while you've got it cuz u aint gonna get it again
Hi Falk Oomikami and Juan Doradea we're sorry to hear you may not have a place to live. While we don't know what state you may be in, consider checking out the resources from HUD: www.hud.gov/topics We hope this helps.
"He's smart but just needs to apply himself more", "He just needs to prioritize better", "He just needs to work harder", "Why can't you just listen?", "Stop fidgeting!". These are the most commonly heard phrases of my life...
So smart could be top of his class if he just focused !always disruptive doesn't concentrate !smart when he applies himself which isn't often was every report card. Why didn't anyone notice instead I was ostricized put outside class Nd eventually expelled !very sad
Really annoys me when people say I’m smart but just need to apply myself. I’m trying - Well, feel like I am but struggling. In school I was put in side rooms away from the rest of the class; called a distraction to others. I fail at all things academic and feel stuck in a world where I want to be ‘something’ but can’t “apply myself enough” to get there.
It's literally 11pm, my roomate's already asleep, I still stayed awake to finish this video because the first time I watched I found another interesting video so I clicked off • _ •
Yes bro I got goosebumps listening to all the symptoms he just called off like the one biut watching countless videos on the internet till u just pass out and not focusing on stuff ur not interested in the list gos on been an everyday battle since I was a kid I hate it
a mental disorder can be your greatest strength. people seem to assume that anything other than the norm is a deficiency or a harmful attribute while we can actively make it the opposite.
Some people think I'm extremely intelligent because of adhd causing me to over analyze things and when my mind is working properly I perform very well and enjoy talking about complex topics. Most people though usually think I'm lazy or a bit slow because I forget so much and I'm as organized as a small child at recess.
I have ADHD and I've got goosebumps from watching this as this sounds as an accurate description of my life, as if someone just stalked me and described it. Thank you for spreading awareness! And thank you for the reminder that it is not the matter of willpower and people with ADHD are not just "lazy" or "care free" (or whatever people around them label them with). I might mistaking because I am not a professional but I have an assumption or a hypothesis that neorotypical people are more linear in their development, meaning that if they can do a "hard" thing they also can automatically do something that is considered "easier" on the scale, whereas for ADHD people the complexity levels system is rather nonlinear, which is why e.g. people can't understand why I speak 4 languages, play music instruments and study a technical study field but can't remember or can't make myself doing laundry/dishes or do a lot of accident mistakes while filling the bureaucratic forms or can't concentrate on something very "simple". That's why it's considered to be laziness, because the level of complexity of the task is not linear anymore, so other people who know what you achieved *assume you should not have problem* with the tasks that are "simpler" compared to your previous achievements (without taking into consideration such parameters as boredom, the level of emergency, if the task is monotonous, if it's something you can hyperfocus one day vs. something you have to remember to do everyday etc.). However, please correct me if I am wrong because I am not sure with about this "linear/ not linear complexity" hypothesis P.s. I just got out of depressive episode caused by ADHD related everyday struggles and trying to get an ADHD diagnosis appointment but it is hard to find one for state insurance in Germany
I think your linear hypothesis is really good! I only just got told I have ADHD on Monday so I'm just starting to learn about it but it's helping make sense of a lot of things in my life.
Me too. To be able to complete something, and not get distracted. I actually feel guilty to continue doing what I'm doing when somebody interrupts me, I feel I ha e to stop and look at them and act as if I'm interested... It sucks
@@harrycontos3847 literally me I dont know what to say, instead i mentally say to myself when will this person piss off im trying to do something here and then before i know it i've completely sidetracked. Currently I have a plan for today that im barely following because each task makes me feel heavy and uninterested. i should be reviewing what i learnt today prepare my materials for tomorrow do my homework and ready for tommorrow but im here in the comments because learning about ADHD is more interesting and this video was easy to focus on. I went to the bathroom and came straight back and continued watching. That speaks volumes to myself because normally I dont want to continue and start doing something else right away.
Find the thing you can do that allows you to focus. It's going to take a lot of experimentation. Try exercise. Try tai chi. Try singing. Try art. Try gaming. Try reading out loud. Try all the things until something clicks.
funny thing is , that i unconsciously have to imagine how other deal with the situation at hand just so i can deal with it too , so you know the drill make a long an intricate scenario when me isn't me but normal me and run throw it fast and with this way i can deal with stuff better i think , because on the normal circumstance if i had to deal with it exactly natively it will end in disaster or a super confusion to every one else
ikr when he was talking about the woman imagining the worst-case scenario with the truck I'm like...yes that's me, I do that for almost everything and my mother keeps telling me to stop thinking so much but like I can't stop
holy cow no kidding, when i was in grade one they sent me to some collage because i would do that watching the pencil hit the floor thing for five minutes. i guess back in the early 70's they did really have a handle on what this was..im sending this video to my mom and taking back all my apologies to her for parent teacher day that she had to sit through..lol..
THISSS. The more time I have to do something, the worst it is... I know myself and say stuff like ''ok, we're gonna do little by little each day and so you don't have to do it all in one at the last minute!'' yet still.... the next day, and the next, and the next one. Only when the day is looming over is when I feel pressured enough to DO SOMETHING with the stuff I'm not really interested in doing.
i've been late for multiple assignments from my boss and she hasn't fired me/yelled at me so it doesn't feel like enough of an emergency to get started and i hate it
I love that a video about ADHD is 28 minutes long Edit: I have no idea what to say, but I cannot thank this video enough. I'm not even kidding, it is responsible for my diagnosis. There was a night in August last year where I listened to this video in the background and just listened in awe, realising that practically everything this doctor said, was something relatable. I had suspected it was ADHD well before but we didn't have absolute proof. In September I got my actual diagnosis and was provided with medication (But this is not the only solution to ADHD! Some people find that alternate methods work just as well, everyone is different), and ever since, it has been life changing. I've been getting the support and arrangements needed in school, I can finally relax a little bit and not be so hard on myself for who I am, it's just incredible, and it wouldn't've happened if not for this video. So huge thanks to Understood for uploading, and to Dr Thomas E. Brown!
It was so relatable that I ended up driving in BeamNG while listening to it and I ended up listening to the entire thing. It's so weird hearing everything about you be described in perfect accuracy
yeah, people think that some are just comepletely helpless people, and the rest are perfectly fine. the thing is, we’re inbetween, where we can do things ourself and we’re just considered as bad people in general
"Sleep like a dead person, I have a hard time resurrecting myself" I'm blessed with the company I work for and my boss. He personally calls me every single morning 7am Without him I would have lost this job a long time ago, like I did with all other jobs I had before
@@HoloScope both me (diagnosed) and my father (undiagnosed but probable gene giver) use like 5 alarms because we cannot trust ourselves, and even then sometimes we end up sleeping through it all, meanwhile my mother wants to smack our phones againdt the wall because of how obnoxious the sound gets and yet we just don't get up, even of we're slightly conscious/awake. And don't get me started on how that, sleeping late and being chronically late to everywhere works like a charm to get chronic fatigue and being fired lol
Besides being amazingly accurate, this man's perfect pauses in his speech gave me the time to process what he's saying and a goal to shoot for. He knows his audience.
100% agreed, EVERYTHING he’s talking about is something I relate to, it’s completely accurate, and it doesn’t help when all we have is people telling us to focus, that doesn’t help
Same. I just broke down right now because he’s describing me. I’m 30 and never knew I had this. Always knew something wasn’t right. But really had no idea. It’s been so debilitating for me.
Even at 62, I'll NEVER forget the first time I took a stimulant. It was as if my brain re-booted for the first time. It wasn't a prescribed medicine & the use of illegal stimulants in an effort to stay "booted" certainly didn't do me any favors. It was after an honest talk with a good Dr that I finally had a legal & fairly safe way of treating this. I believe the rise in stimulant use may be caused by folks self-medicating as I did & the addiction is more to the feeling of thinking clearly than the actual drug, at least at first. Anyone else relate?
Thank you for making this video. I am a 74 year old woman who grew up “orbiting another planet” and hearing my mother tell every teacher that I was lazy. I have learned how to manage time better and am mostly as organized as I need to be but many ADHD traits live on. And, we have 3 sons diagnosed with it. Dr. you are right on with every aspect. Thank you again for making this video.
Yes, it does help a lot. Also, I've always struggled with either reading books or listening to audiobooks, but If I do both simultaneously I can focus very easily. Another sort of hack I use for audiobooks is to play any simple game on my phone like 2048 and I can go for hours without any random thoughts disrrupting me.
I’m right there with you, I’ve been dealing with these symptoms ever since I can remember. Now being an adult and on my own has made everything that much more apparent. Wishing you the best
I always felt so wrong for not being able to concentrate in college and dropping out but most subject I just could sit through and my disorganization didn’t help at all
I see you 🥺 I also have severe depression which is robbing me of all of my energy. A friend helped me understand that I have a problem and that I need to go see a psychologist. The most damaging thing to me as a teenager was being seen as lazy and undisciplined. Ugh. I want to hug this comments section 🥺❤️
It’s so overwhelming to hear him explain this so accurately. I’ve spent years getting yelled at, losing jobs and being disappointed In myself. Knowing I’m trying as hard as I can and not getting results. I’ve never heard someone get it dead right like this.
for reals like my parents just think i’m lazy or it’s my will like i was born like this and likely thing is it’s one of yours fault. like they’ll never understand that i just can’t focus same way a person who’s paralyzed can’t run like no matter how hard they try they’ll never run it impossible.
ADHD.... God bless those that have it. Educators never understood us. They always told me to just focus and not try doing multiple tasks at the same time. Now I'm 70. I love reading books and watching movies at the same time. I work in chemistry and material science. I love working on several projects at the same time. I develop other products during the down time, while waiting for my current projects to finish mixing and or running thermal or aging tests and or adhesion testing. Thats my ADHD. I drove my co-workers,parents,step parents, teachers, and my wonderful German, highly organize, and virtually perfect wife crazy all my life. But I love being ADHD. I learned everything from how to... water purification, explosives, armor, horse shampoo, pie baking, nuclear radiation shielding, industrial coatings, and a dozen other interests that no one would believe or understand. When you are so called diagnosed with ADHD celebrate! You are going to drive so called normal people crazy all your life, but you are a rare and really cool person, with very few friends if any. Live with it.
Jim Henry your story is amazing, thanks for sharing! It's lovely to hear how you've made it although there was no understanding of the condition back in the days. I feel familiar! 🌷 Love the internet bc of this peer support.
Dear Jim Henry....you have made me feel alot better after watching this this morning and beating myself up all day at how ineffective I am.... but in retrospect...you are right. I am amazing at being multi teaching/ tasking little ol me. Cheers!
jim henry thank you for speaking out as an achiever. I was all for this video right up until the ending. Suppose I was on the fence all the way through about the speaker wondering if he was trying to help or condescending, which his closing identified unfortunately. He did get a lot of views so congratulations for his success. Thank you for proving people with ADD are capable of being good hearted, hard working, very valuable members of our society. God bless you Sir, from a retired 60 year old Automotive worker. Thank you. 🙏 😊
@@UnderstoodOrgfor me did not only find this helpful but also made me feel belonging. I can’t believe that so many things I do everyday were caused by my ADHD I have been living with it my hole life and did not even know all my own symptoms that were a cause of it and you helped clear some of that up for me!
When you have ADD/ADHD and you literally just smile and clap when you realize it's totally describing you but after you're like: I don't think I should be happy about this
'it makes it look like it's a problem with willpower' I CRIED when he said that. My mother used to tell me 'you just lack willpower, try developing it'. I still don't know if I have ADHD and probably won't be even diagnosed, 'cause I live in a country where it's not considered a disease. I lived my whole life in a cage of my own mind, feeling like I am an incomplete human with this defective brain. Always tried to 'just focus' and push myself, thinking maybe it's all in my head, but it never worked. Man I am so tired
You are not alone and there's nothing 'wrong' with you. ADHD can be maddening but it can be managed. Your brain is not defective it just functions differently than other's. Medication has helped me considerably. I understand that may be hard for you to get where you are but don't lose hope. I know exactly what you mean when you say "I'm so tired", I could never count the number of times in my life that I've said out loud to myself "Please just shut the f*** up!" when my mind seems to be filled with noise that I can't make stop. It can be exhausting but don't give up man. Do the things that you are good at and do your best at the things you're not and keep looking for help. The fact that you are here means that you are working to improve your situation and that matters.
I don’t think ADHD is actually a disease but rather just a difference in how we as human beings are created. You may find a place to just be yourself without expectations in the virtual world of Second Life. I usually don’t comment here but your comment touched my heart.
@@alex_poly1147 What you're saying certainly leads to more comfort and relaxation. But unfortunately, ADHD isn't a problem with someone's thoughts. It's more of a motivational disorder where most of what you set your mind into doesn't give you the energy to get up and execute it. I hope that makes sense to you.
I actually almost cried watching this video. Never in my entire life have I ever heard someone explain this so well. I felt cared for and that this man held sympathy for me and what goes on. I dont know why this is such a big deal for me but I love this video so much. Thank you.
I'm begging you to add Arabic translation so I can show this to my parents..really hope you can do that Edit: can this comment get attention please so my parents would actually believe that it's a real thing, thank you!
Important you find other ways to express your emotions about ADHD to them. It may be difficult to talk to them about it. But perhaps if you started the translation, you'd find saying it in his words, in arabic, would help you to cross the bridge with them. Good luck! I also have ADHD and relationships are the hardest thing in the world for me. Hope you find strength to run that marathon !
For all those lovely people that replied, mental health is rarely recognized as a real thing in the Middle East, his parents reaction is unfortunately the typical norm. Only if the disability (psychiatric be it) is visible like someone having hallucinations, then they deem it mental health but in most cases label the person as crazy.
I agree completely! It’s so hard to describe what ADHD is like to someone who doesn’t have it. My wife and I both work in mental health and even when she knows everything about it from the textbooks and working with her patients at, she doesn’t know what it’s like to live with it. I also think the fact that we can’t describe what ADHD is really like makes it harder for the ones who need the medication‘s to talk with their providers about it because a lot of us know that people like to abuse and amphetamines and Ritalin and will pretty much describe everything that we know from experience and it’s hard for the clinicians to tell the difference.
EXACTLY, i actually never thought i had ADHD, because i thought a person with ADHD is the typical hyperactive kid at the back of class always cracking jokes and can't shut up, but after seeing this video I can relate so much to it, it's unbelievable
Bruh Ive been sitting here for 28 minutes being like wait that's my adhd? I thought that was normal?? I literally thought everyone paid attention to the pencil dropping thing. Sending this to all my friends lmao
The same way your affirmation is somehow funny and totally true, family, and specially my wife have great difficulty to help me out... congratulations 👏👏👏
I'm 35, diagnosed ADHD at 33. I've been reading and learning as much as possible about ADHD but this man still casually talking about things that slap home and I never even realised.
That's sad, i hope you have someone eho will listen and help you get the tools you need. It can be a blessing or a curse if not handled. It's like your eye color always with you. At least you know, get the help you need and move past your dad's opinion. I'm greatful I got treatment.
I’m sorry. I’m a mom and both my sons 17&19 both have ADHD and it’s pretty bad. As a parent I can tell you it’s hard. It’s a fine line. I want to be understanding but also hold them accountable for their behavior. I’ve seen parents blame all on adhd because it’s easy and others who just “no excuse” because they want to teach kids to learn not to “blame the adhd” It’s just so hard for a parent. I try my best to understand my sons and love them and show lots of mercy. It’s a view from a parent. Try to (if you can) send educational videos to your dad. That helps a lot.....
My parents understood but society in general is pretty shitty about it. My best friend got me a job as a fiber splicer and he's a quick learner and a judgmental person, lets just say it put a strain on our friendship.
I grew up with this. All I can advise is to do your best to get through and talk to anyone who will hear you out. You know and understand how you operate, so you have to adjust your surroundings as best you can and adapt to what you can't change as best you can.
“Was all about little boys” I felt that. I didn’t get diagnosed until I was 23. I was smart but stupid. Funny but shy. Fatigued but full of energy. I’ve never been able to fall asleep to silence.
Your comment, like this video, resonates so deeply with me. There’s such a dichotomy with having ADHD, and that could be why many people who have it are prone to getting easily frustrated. Internally, they are saying to themselves, “Get it together already!”
I can't stop crying as I watch this...Everything he is saying is spot on with what I go through every day and I'm almost 30. I've always just been labeled depressed, bi polar...lazy...I'm going to try and get help, I hope someone will help me...
Sara's Simply Sweet Reborns hello me too and I'm 41.would u like to be friends, I'm on fb jemma Lewis. My cover pic says 'I have so much left to say to u'. X
Yea I know the feeling. I am 30 as well, my father pretty much disowned me after realizing I am not doing so well in school. My mother constantly thinks I am lazy and won't amount to much. Worst of all, I am actually tryign to change but unable to sit long enough in one place to achieve my goals.
Sara's Simply Sweet Reborns I agree this was very insightful I have been diagnosed bipolar but always felt like I had some attention deficit disorder after watching this I know for sure I do I'm going to ask to be reevaluated
Man ill be in my lecture listening and ill think about something, then all of a sudden i realise I havent heard a word he said. And then ill try focus. Then without realising ill be thinking about something else
I don’t comment online, I don’t feel the need to share my opinions. Believe it or not this is the first time I’ve ever made a post. The reason being is that this is the first time in my life that someone has effectively and clearly explained the issues I have dealt with living with ADHD, and for that reason, for the first time I have felt strongly enough to make an online post to voice my support for everyone who doesn’t ADHD to watch so they can understand. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS VIDEO
thats also ADHD we always feel wrong... or hard to explain.... but for me if i do something in an order & say like wake up. brush teeth, take shower eat snack n jump on bus BUT if something screws up that order i usually dont end up finishing up the rest.... of w/e i had to do.... its hard too explain why but ive had to tell my dad that listen if im in my mode lemme finish what iwas doing before i do anything else n sometimes he would be like just do this 1 thing for me quick n it would screw everything else up n its like idk why my ADHD does that to me
This is the best explanation of ADHD that I’ve ever heard. I can’t believe I couldn’t get a diagnosis until I was 40 and that I had to advocate so hard. All of this is my experience. Wow!
I did too. It seems like it's one thing to recognize our symptoms ourselves, and sometimes that's recognizing a couple of symptoms in one situation and a couple of other symptoms in a different situation. It was really interesting to hear all of these things I struggle with described at once; plus, he describes them in such a way that doesn't make our symptoms sound like deficiencies or failings but like they're just differences -- though it seemed subtle, I think that meant a lot to me.
Same here. I'm a 35 year old male with atrocious sleep. It feels liberating to hear an educated person describing all those things I've always struggled with, but always having blamed it on my really bad sleep. Maybe there is still hope!
Try being in the shower about to wash your hair - putting shampoo in your hands, then rubbing it into your face. You realise, wash it off, put shampoo in your hands again....then put it on your face again....
the way he keeps reassureing that it's not something under voluntary control makes me want to cry, that's more emotional comfort than my own parents have ever given me combined lol
I (29y.o) recently started doing therapy, and my therapist brought this, i went home did a little research and find this video, this man is literally describing me, I stopped at the 15th minutes because its night time and am afraid the more he talk about it the more I am going to overthink it and ruin my sleep even more. But the "chocking moment" i get with every phrase he say is something that i cannot describe, if am being honest i am not sure if am scared or relieved now.
This... I'm 26 and have always known something wasn't the same with me as everyone else and almost every thing he said is me. I'm simultaneously relieved because nobody has ever understood me like this and frustrated because it's possible that things could have been so much easier for me if someone had caught it when I was younger and I received a formal diagnosis and treatment. I've been reading about inattentive ADHD and I have all of the signs/symptoms. So it's time I seek a formal diagnosis and treatment.
“easy, if it's something I'm interested in I can pay attention, if not - I can't.” Whenever I have given this answer 99,99% of people have replied “No! You are just lazy!” Frustrating!
Like the guy said, anyone is going to pay attention better to something they’re interested in. So when people without ADHD hear what you just said, they’ll probably roll their eyes. Those of us with adhd though cannot force ourselves to pay attention when we don’t want to. I’ve had a lot of people not believe me as well and call it laziness.
This man describes adult ADHD in manner clearer and more relatable than I've ever heard before in any video. He says it EXACTLY like I experience it! Especially the drifting attention part (the trouble "staying tuned").
I asked a psychiatrist once if he thought I might have ADHD. He replied, "Were you diagnosed with it before you were twelve? No? Then you don't have ADHD." and that was the end of that discussion. Pretty cool to see someone recognize it as something that might not be obvious until a little later in life... Update: I got a new psychiatrist who seems about just as interested in listening to me as the last one did. Told her that basically everything psychiatrists say about ADHD lines up very well with my experience and my struggles. Her response to that pretty much boiled down to neither me nor any other doctor I've heard from has any idea what we're talking about. And no single piece of information about mental health that exists on the internet can possibly be correct. How much do you have to pay to get a doctor who will at least pretend to respect you?
That doctor is really bad at his job if he says that you need to be diagnosed before you are 12. The official criteria states that you only need some symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsiveness before 12, not that you need to be diagnosed before 12. You should get a second opinion.
Idk 2 Doctors told you that you don't have ADHD... Then you probably don't have ADHD and it's probably something else or you should definitely look into border personality disorder.
ADHD is the ultimate COMBO to destroying your grades. Can't maintain a consistent study schedule. Only studies when a sense of emergency awakes, usually it being the night before the exam or any actual task. Then you can't get the answers right because you have awful short term memory and forgot everything that you studied the night before. Knowing that if you studied bits for 1-2 weeks you would probably have done better, but couldn't do it because of ADHD. nice
I’m literally crying, sobbing out loud from relief seeing this man explain how i’m not broken; that other people aren’t ‘better’ than me because they don’t have this condition. I am 34 years old, diagnosed 6mo ago. Top student at school but life fell apart when I had to start ‘adulting’. This is me. Thank you, THANK YOU for this video 🙏 Best of luck to everyone else here with ADD/ADHD…please share it to everyone you know who has it too - it’ll make their day ☺️ x
ADHD: Getting distracted watching a video about ADHD, which you were watching at work, in stead of working, realising this, and stopping the video (again) to write this comment.
ADHD is so misunderstood and people stereotype it as like a hyper kid on a sugar rush. It hurts so much when you’re told “just do it “ and you say you can’t help it. They will never understand that we really try and want to do it or whatever it is, but it’s literally against our conscious will. I appreciate how real this video explained ADHD in ways I don’t think I could ever describe. Remember to be patient with your fellow neurodivergent humans, they are honestly doing their possible best.
Living with ADHD from childhood (I’m almost 40 now) and this is the FIRST TIME EVER that I’ve heard a professional get it right. I’m mean-Get it SO RIGHT. Thank you so much for posting this video….thank you for your words of compassion and understanding….thank you for advocating. Thank you.
Dr Thomas Brown is the ONLY one I've seen who really understood my brain, or lack thereof. ADHD is a silent career-killer, a hidden relationship killer. I'm 64. My IQ is gifted, my experiences worldwide, my schooling from all over, and I love reading the encyclopedia. But I barely passed any class I ever took throughout all of primary school, HS, and college. Tell me something is super-important, and I'll try but fail to listen to you. However, in a real emergency, when everyone around is screaming and running and stunned, I will be the one who is unperturbed, has analyzed the emergency, come up with three backup plans, and probably will have solved the problem before anyone else has calmed down enough to know what's going on. ADHD has killed one marriage and one engagement, put me in jail and in a boys home, and got me busted in the military. I also earned more medals than anyone I know. Because of ADHD, my life gyrates from "going to prison soon" to "our greatest success story" several times a week. And I wouldn't trade it for "normal," ever.
I need help. Where can I go, who can I talk to because I've been lost a long time now. I just saw the video that explained my circumstances at times and I need to know more. Please help me.

Albert Einstein had ADHD I have always wanted to be a scientist but I thought I couldn't because of my ADHD but after hearing Albert Einstein had ADHA I felt a lot better and now I'm about to graduate at 16 and I have been accepted into Harvard University
Yeah, agreed. I really relate to the whole thing about parents pointing out, well they can do this perfectly fine, so why can't they do that? Like okay, mom, it's not that frickin easy
I'm currently at 16:50, with both hands on top of my head. Realized I need to pause the video to make this comment: How does this guy know so damn much about me? My girlfriend has ADHD. I sometimes get irritated or mad at her because she forgets things, she’s easily distracted, or when we’re walking our dogs, she can’t just enjoy the silence but has to say something about everything she sees. This video helps me understand her better. I feel bad for getting upset at her. I understand it’s hard for her but it’s also hard for me too. I hope I’ll learn to accept and deal with it.
I have ADHD I'm 41 I've only just been diagnosed. I got that diagnosis as a result of getting my 11 year old son diagnosed. My poor husband has to manage both me and my son's disordered behaviours. We are good fun us ADHDers! Hard work but worth it!x
i recently learned that i have adhd and i was broken up with by my ex girlfriend maybe a year ago now. i realize now that she was probably sick of my adhd symptoms that i didn’t know about at the time. and i felt like an asshole the whole relationship for forgetting things, not being able to make time for her, or getting super irritated with her because of serious sensory issues.
Mister Brown, you are the only human being that has ever been able to understand and put in words what happens in my brain. The sheer fact that someone understands makes me a little happier. Thank you!

@@robertmurphy2960 a.. its always a... autism, adhd, add, asperger, all starts with an A... I think our O has tricked our A to believe all this exists. 109% UNSURE but im suspecting it.. im my own enemy and friend.
@@robertmurphy2960 You were mis-diagnosed then; that has been a real problem. If you just taught yourself to "pay attention when it mattered", then it is unlikely you had ADHD. ADHD is treated with stimulants because the ADHD brain has an insufficient number of dopamine transporters in the reward pathways of the brain (Volkow, et. al., 2009) meaning that ADHD individuals require more stimulus for the same amount of reward. This is why people with ADHD are overrepresented among "thrill-seekers" and "adrenaline junkies" and generally more likely to engage in high risk activities for an "endorphin rush" - which is why life insurance premiums for them can easily be triple that of a neurotypical person. You can't teach yourself to produce more dopamine transporters. Secondly, methamphetamine is different from amphetamines. Methamphetamine is not a first line treatment for ADHD. That methyl group makes methamphetamine lipophilic which is crucially important when we're discussing how well it moves into an organ that is 60% lipids. That methyl group also means it isn't broken down much by enzymes in the brain and must be processed in the liver making methamphetamine vastly more hepatotoxic than plain amphetamines. Thirdly, racemic amphetamines salts have been out of patent for decades and manufacturing is closely regulated by the FDA since it is a schedule II drug. There are several manufacturers of generic Adderall and doctors don't get to choose which manufacturer supplies their patients. Which drug company is paying these doctors? The one about to go out of business I would imagine because that is a significant expense the non-kickback manufacturers don't have to shoulder. People with ADHD have enough to deal with without uninformed judgmental troglodytes on the internet calling them "fragile".
The whole intelligence bit at the beginning really was important. I've been diagnosed with adhd since I was 7 and ,in school, teachers always just assumed I was a troubled idiot. Jokes on you, I'm smart, just in things that don't matter
@@nerad1994 I think she was making a joke about how someone with add/adhd watching this probably couldn’t sit through it lol. But yeah it’s a really interesting topic. It’s crazy and we’re so focused on space exploration when there’s still so much we don’t know about our own brains.

I just watched to stair at his interesting head.
It’s a weird spot to be in but nice to be validated on what I think is wrong upstairs 😂
as a person with ADHD the amount of times i had to rewind is embarrassing
No need to be embarrassed for who we are. Everyone is different and that's ok
I can’t watch tv for too long, I totally start thinking about something else, very random thoughts 😬
I think.
[edited to make the comment less word vomit]
[edit again, I completely forgot that months will pass without me realizing it as well... But I think that may have to do with aging.... Though I'm only 30, so time shouldn't be moving that fast yet...]
But it is worthy, ain’t it?

It was a shock to me to learn that people who don’t have ADHD don’t need to find something interesting to be able to concentrate on it.

“ADHD has nothing to do with how smart you are.” I really felt this one. The stigma is very real.
YES!!! To the point that one loses self-esteem and confidence!
a mental disorder can be your greatest strength. people seem to assume that anything other than the norm is a deficiency or a harmful attribute while we can actively make it the opposite.
Some people think I'm extremely intelligent because of adhd causing me to over analyze things and when my mind is working properly I perform very well and enjoy talking about complex topics. Most people though usually think I'm lazy or a bit slow because I forget so much and I'm as organized as a small child at recess.
My adult brother has ADHD and that comment was emotional for me, I know how smart he is!
@@casey8533 I m like that and my mom and I get in to problem due to my problem
However, please correct me if I am wrong because I am not sure with about this "linear/ not linear complexity" hypothesis

Only when the day is looming over is when I feel pressured enough to DO SOMETHING with the stuff I'm not really interested in doing.

I love that a video about ADHD is 28 minutes long
Edit: I have no idea what to say, but I cannot thank this video enough. Brown!

Tell me about it brother
Even at 62, I'll NEVER forget the first time I took a stimulant. It was as if my brain re-booted for the first time. It wasn't a prescribed medicine & the use of illegal stimulants in an effort to stay "booted" certainly didn't do me any favors. It was after an honest talk with a good Dr that I finally had a legal & fairly safe way of treating this. I believe the rise in stimulant use may be caused by folks self-medicating as I did & the addiction is more to the feeling of thinking clearly than the actual drug, at least at first. Anyone else relate?

I see you 🥺 I also have severe depression which is robbing me of all of my energy. A friend helped me understand that I have a problem and that I need to go see a psychologist. The most damaging thing to me as a teenager was being seen as lazy and undisciplined. Ugh. I want to hug this comments section 🥺❤️
I've never had someone explain my entire situation in such a detailed way that actually makes sense.
It’s so overwhelming to hear him explain this so accurately. I’ve spent years getting yelled at, losing jobs and being disappointed In myself. Knowing I’m trying as hard as I can and not getting results. I’ve never heard someone get it dead right like this.
It’s so incredibly validating. It’s listening to someone articulate what I’ve been trying to articulate my entire life.
for reals like my parents just think i’m lazy or it’s my will like i was born like this and likely thing is it’s one of yours fault. like they’ll never understand that i just can’t focus same way a person who’s paralyzed can’t run like no matter how hard they try they’ll never run it impossible.
I’m 20 and I never really bothered until they made all classes online.
Dear Jim Henry....you have made me feel alot better after watching this this morning and beating myself up all day at how ineffective I am.... but in retrospect...you are right.
I am amazing at being multi teaching/ tasking little ol me.
Cheers!
Thank you Henry
jim henry thank you for speaking out as an achiever. Thank you. 🙏 😊
I always go back to this video, this doctor describes ADHD so accurately
Hi ADHD Patrick - Live With ADHD & Conquer Anxiety - Thanks for your comment. We're happy to hear you have found this helpful.
I just sent to my husband so he can understand why I am the way I am as well as my therapist and my mom!! Oh and Facebook too of course! ❤️
@@UnderstoodOrgfor me did not only find this helpful but also made me feel belonging. I can’t believe that so many things I do everyday were caused by my ADHD I have been living with it my hole life and did not even know all my own symptoms that were a cause of it and you helped clear some of that up for me!
Holy crap! Well said... That's so me.
YES OMG THIS IS SO ACCURATE, THANKSSS
I need this man to be my doctor, counselor, psychologist, friend...whatever! I'm down
I never felt so understood in my life, it makes want to cry.

I usually don’t comment here but your comment touched my heart.
adhd is more of neurotype thing than will power
+
@@alex_poly1147 What you're saying certainly leads to more comfort and relaxation. But unfortunately, ADHD isn't a problem with someone's thoughts. It's more of a motivational disorder where most of what you set your mind into doesn't give you the energy to get up and execute it. I hope that makes sense to you.
Probably the most comprehensive and no nonsense video about ADHD on internet. Sir brown is really great speaker as well.
That’s what I thought and he kept my concentration throughout which is a miracle.
I actually almost cried watching this video. Never in my entire life have I ever heard someone explain this so well. I felt cared for and that this man held sympathy for me and what goes on. I dont know why this is such a big deal for me but I love this video so much. Thank you.

I'm begging you to add Arabic translation so I can show this to my parents..really hope you can do that
Edit: can this comment get attention please so my parents would actually believe that it's a real thing, thank you!
Do you have closed captions? It may not be perfect but it may translate the major ideas.
"Understood" doesn't allow adding translation to the video otherwise I would do the translation for you!
Omg I feel the same way 😭😭💔 my parents refuse to take me to the doctor
THIS GUY KNOWS ME BETTER THAN MY WHOLE FAMILY
Having adhd with a stubborn dad is the worst. He refuses to believe my disability exists. It's just an excuse to him
That's sad, i hope you have someone eho will listen and help you get the tools you need.
He probably has it as well
I grew up with this.
I'm 42, and this video has diagnosed me!, my son has it he's 12, and on medication.

@@finnegan728omg yes finally. Music is the only thing that can make me relax I have ADHD tics so I have an extremely hard time staying still
Your comment, like this video, resonates so deeply with me.

Thanks, Miles Hart, for your kind words. We're so glad this video has helped you.

thats also ADHD we always feel wrong... or hard to explain.... but for me if i do something in an order & say like wake up. brush teeth, take shower eat snack n jump on bus BUT if something screws up that order i usually dont end up finishing up the rest.... of w/e i had to do.... its hard too explain why but ive had to tell my dad that listen if im in my mode lemme finish what iwas doing before i do anything else n sometimes he would be like just do this 1 thing for me quick n it would screw everything else up
n its like idk why my ADHD does that to me
ur not alone bro :) guess we are special hehe
same, i cant give myself time for a break because 10 minutes on my phone will end up being 1h.
This is the best explanation of ADHD that I’ve ever heard. I can’t believe I couldn’t get a diagnosis until I was 40 and that I had to advocate so hard. All of this is my experience. Wow!
I honestly started to get a little emotional watching this. So much of my life makes sense to me now. Thank you.
I have the same experience right know. Oh man.

Same here...
"The problem is often short term memory" ... mostly by the time I have opened a new browser tab, I already forgot what i wanted to look for 😂

But the "chocking moment" i get with every phrase he say is something that i cannot describe, if am being honest i am not sure if am scared or relieved now.
Exactly the same for me. I always felt like something was wrong with me but I didn't know what it was. Diagnosed yesterday at 31 years old 🙃

@Star Trek Theory
Have you ever said that too anyone with ADHD. Only who's an, idiot would repeat to say something so stupid. As that🗣🥱
Star Trek Theory funny part is, I have it and I had that happen to me my whole childhood. Did it help? Absolutely not. You’re an idiot
@Star Trek Theory dont be mad
How dumb. Unbelievable leaves one dumb founded. Head in hands🧐🤯
Knowing that if you studied bits for 1-2 weeks you would probably have done better, but couldn't do it because of ADHD. nice
I thought that was normal and it was just procrastination...
Yep
Yeah this, but i sometimes havent started even 2 days after the deadline. kinda stops me from progressing in anything
And then you immediately find you have this great feeling that you are a failure and your grades drop even more
I’m literally crying, sobbing out loud from relief seeing this man explain how i’m not broken; that other people aren’t ‘better’ than me because they don’t have this condition.
I am 34 years old, diagnosed 6mo ago. Top student at school but life fell apart when I had to start ‘adulting’. This is me.

@@UGPVlogsLA i dont take adderal but one snarky pharmacost said i dont even know what heavy meds im on. ive tried wellbutrin and another med now on elavil..its been a life saver for me. i could have punched her. dont let it bother u , im sixty just diagnosed. ive been suffering my entire life. my dad use to beat me up over this issue. best of luck .
I have never felt so connected and validated from a video before. 😢

does anyone else just make entire movies in your head like every time you try to go to sleep
all the time ahah it's one of the few things that relax me enough to hep me sleep to be honest
Yeo bro that’s so funny lol I thought I was the only one 😂😂😂😂
way too many times,lol
Wait it isn't normal? Okay
That's called Maladaptive daydreaming, I also have it, look it up its actually pretty interesting
The whole intelligence bit at the beginning really was important. I've been diagnosed with adhd since I was 7 and ,in school, teachers always just assumed I was a troubled idiot. Jokes on you, I'm smart, just in things that don't matter
My Grammer really isn't helping my case but eh

my man really did a video about ADD/ADHD and made an almost 30 minute long explaining it
It’s a very in depth and intricate topic for sure
@@nerad1994 I think she was making a joke about how someone with add/adhd watching this probably couldn’t sit through it lol. But yeah it’s a really interesting topic. It’s crazy and we’re so focused on space exploration when there’s still so much we don’t know about our own brains.
