The cutscenes are easily the part of Reload that puts me off the most. The OG had such a distinct, bleak style to its anime cutscenes. While the movies lost that, they made up for it in the direction and execution of their scenes - the protagonist's awakening was so freaking good! Reload feels like it's trying to emulate the movies without understanding what made them work so well, and it can't even be bothered to 2D animate some of the important ones (like said awakening), so it comes off as a hollow imitation.
Took me a while to realized what you meant by "WiT" until I found out that they're the studio that did all the Anime Cutscenes in this Remake 😅 I wonder if they are still gonna be animating the Anime Cutscenes for the Aigis Expansion like they did with the Base game?
Im pretty sure they got the same studio that animated Spy X Family to do the cutscenes, so its kind of weird to see the shift on some cutscenes being pretty good and others being a little off.
It represents the danger of death. By fighting shadows in the Dark Hour you have to acknowledge that your life is in danger and that you could die. That's why the evoker is shaped like a pistol. You're accepting your fate
They even managed to fuck up the ending shot? In the original game, the "fin" screen comes up around Aigis, tearing her teary eyed gaze away from the now deceased Makoto and looking towards her friends with a bittersweet expression. The reason for this is because it symbolizes her finally being able to move on from her past, her obsession with Makoto and her agonizing over the mistake she made, which was hurting him as a child. She loved him and now he's gone. But his legacy is bringing together these people into a found family. The game ends with Aigis looking towards them because they are the future she is inheriting from Makoto. The games themes about Death being the opposite side of rebirth are perfectly encapsulated in this shot, and thats why it holds so much power. But of course, fading to white on Makoto's corpse while the most generic visual metaphor for serenity, cherry blossoms floating in the breeze, happens instead. Are we supposed to meditate on how calming death is? Are we supposed to understand it as a blissful release from the daily pain and fatigue of life? Somehow i doubt the scene director for this remake put that much thought into it, and probably thought it was "pretty" and "fitting". That demonstrates a lot of the logic driving creative decisions in this remake to me. Why would we bother with all this complicated artsy shit when we can just make the prettiest picture possible with the engine and spoon-feed the story to the audience who are probably half paying attention to the story while scrolling on Instagram anyways. Its not like anyone really cares about things like messages or themes when the graphics look nice right?
I feel that the remade ending still fits with the theme tho. I saw p3 as more of a story on how live is not worth living half assedly. We can see makoto rebirthing from a guy completely desensitized from life and death to someone willing to take risks and expose himself to the world. I think the last scene is less about the serenity of death than it is about the beauty of makoto’s life. The entire reason he died in the first place was because he chose to take a risk in fighting nyx over forsaking the relationships that gave him purpose. Him being at peace at the end reaffirms the decisions hes made. Makotos not peaceful because he was given the sweet release of death, he’s peaceful because he’s happy with the one year he spent with sees and his friends. Youre spot on w the aigis stuff tho
The one I will never forgive them for ruining is the destruction of Tartarus. This one had everyone talking, and Aigis's tears weren't even a part of the cutscene. They were just treated as regular in-game dialogue. In the original, the only thing we heard were the strokes of the clock, and Aigis silently spilled tears with the final stroke of midnight. The original was downright beautiful, and this was a steaming pile of shit.

It seems like a lot of inspiration for Reload was taken from the movie adaptation, including the art direction

I agree that the movies do look better than reload's cutscenes, they had such an aesthetic direction
Honestly I think I prefer the Tartarus introduction cutscene in reloaded over the original.
Coming here from p3p; my god its beautiful
