Please don't ever think you are boring. It's a joy just to sit, watch you videos. It's almost like keeping you company while your sewing, so don't be afraid to chatter on, it's lovely, and no flipping music, horay ❤ 👋🏼🏴
Thank your for a great tutorial! I bought some crushed walnuts on Amazon and on the container it says, “Walnut Shell blast and tumble media”. It’s a 12-20 grit. I’m very happy with it. I loved your story about trying to crush them!😊
Katherine, you're bloody great!! Its 6.30 am here in New Zealand. Im parked up in bed with my dog's and coffee watching your channel. Your relaxed chat and humour making me smile often. And your stitched thingies are glorious! Cheers muchly . Zig, Berty and Bear❤
Hi Katherine, Thank you so much for inspiring me to have a go & relax & do some hand stitching as I always use my machine. I sat & sewed along with you & loved the finished result. Shame I don't have any friends that sew as they'd make such a sweet gift! (perhaps it's time to widen my friend circle!!)😄🥰
Loved this tutorial. I made my biscornu pin cushion this weekend. I added a circle decoration on the top, which is for me to put my needles in that section to keep them separate from the pins. Works really well.
I made pin cushions one year for holiday gifts. I bought a small bag of crushed walnut shells at the pet store. I guess it's used as bedding for some pets.
Wow, I’m over 60 years old and I have never seen a pin cushion sewn like that before - I love it! Later today I plan on making one a bit larger for my long quilting pins. Tfs
Lovely ! At least here in the US crushed walnut shells are available very inexpensively at any pet store. They are used as reptile bedding .Can't wait to try this project !
This is such a clear and inviting how-to video visit; I was able to make two very satisfying biscornu (s? Biscorni?). Many thanks for sharing your experience and passion for Making beautiful and useful items.
I purchased a 2lb bag of crushed walnut shells at a pet supply store in the canary aisle. They are used in the bottom of the cage for birds to scratch in. I filled my pin cushions by spooning the crushed shells through a small funnel.
Just discovered your videos, and I can't get off them. I am in awe of everything you do,as well as your very lovely calming voice, which is a pleasure to listen too..........Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.🙂
Wow! Google Biscornu ( a french word meaning quirky, skewed) and look at the images. The embroidery designs are just beautiful. Thanks for showing me this pincushion pattern. 😊
I just discovered your channel about two weeks ago. At the end of October I started to crochet, and not that I'm bored, but I'm diving into the slow stick world. I just finished the pin cushion and I'm ready for a few more projects. I'm so glad you popped on my feed.
I have so enjoyed watching and listening to you today! I have been hand sewing on a gift for my sister. I am now a new subscriber and thankful to have you come up on my feed. Oh, I see you are about to reach 40,000 subscribers, that's great. Sure you'll be getting plenty more you don't have that annoying music, you are interesting and explain things clearly. Thank you I look forward to watching many more videos of yours! Blessings.
Great use of a few items - your tutorials are ALWAYS a pleasure to watch!! You give great tips/advice!! Thank you for taking the time to create your wonderful videos👍🏻🙌🏻💕🤗🤗👏🏻!!
Hi Kathryn, I have decided I do need to make a biscornu pin cushion after all. Getting the squares the same size will be the biggest challenge I think.😉Lol Thanks for sharing. love Bella ❤❤
😁 I read your previous comment before I went to bed and woke up this morning to read this. Wonderful to think of you beavering away on your pin cushion while I slept over here on the other side of the planet 🤣🥰❤️
Oh, we had a great time. We decided to use the same cloth for each cushion so they would be sister cushions. I watched your twine making EXTRA video to day and darn! I got! Yay Me!!! I made the most beautiful blue and yellow twine ( only about a foot long) I pretty much got only half the length of my original cloth strips. I’m looking for cloth that will work for my purple bottom of the cushion and the printed top to make the cushion ‘s basket. Sister and I went to a thrift store yesterday. We scored! Got several pieces of cloth, I got one silk scarf witch I cut four different pieces I stitched together for or third week project. We stopped at a quilting shop and I found little appliqué pins for $7.00. Everything in that shop was ridiculously priced. Well, if there is something one must have I’m certain they have it. I so appreciate you spending time and labor for all of us. As a child I sewed with my mother and grandmothers. The projects you make for us bring back wonderful memories. THANK YOU!❤
That was fun, I posted mine on Facebook. Now I want to make a pillow that way...or cushion as you say across the pond. I'm a quilter and stuff my things with thread and fabric bits, I always have a basket full. Thanks, Gloria
Thank you for sharing this with us. I have been wanting to make some of these. I love how you call them " good Lad ." I found it reassuring, I'm not the only one that talks to my projects. You explain and demonstrate very well. I appreciate the simplicity of the design. Thank you again. Have a blessed holiday season. 😊❤❤
Hi ,thoroughly enjoyed this video and in fact I quickly grabbed my fabrics and got everything ready to sew along with you. I now have a beautiful Biscornu Pin Cushion in two glorious christmas fabrics to remind me when I made it. I have two wooden heart buttons in the centre. I love it and will definitely make more. Your instructions were perfect. Thank you so much from Karen xx
Just discovered you. Subscribed immediately! I make embroidered pin cushions for friends. I got to thrift stores a collect candy dishes or decorative bowls to use as stands. I will try your pattern next time. Seems much easier to size match. And thanks to the comments I now know where to get walnut shells!!
Hi k3n. I love long 'boring' stories on youtube. I watch videos while knitting 'boring' easy knitting patterns (just because I want to have that all stocking stitch sweater ...). I do like them to be on an intersting subject, like nature/wildlife or some hand craft technique. I don't like them to be only a quick tutorial, because then I have to click some buttons to go on with the next video ... 😉
This excellent tutorial came up early on our Thanksgiving Day 2023 here in Washington State USA….it made me so happy as a newbie to slow stitching…..I want to jump right in…..but unfortunately I have 10 for dinner and “busy hands are happy hand”…..so I will return again to watch as You have done such a great job taking away a bit of the mystery……Blessings
Aww ❤ You said "good lad" while you were sewing the button on and it was cooperating, just like I talk to my horses, and I love that you used the stuffing from the pad. This would be my favorite pin cushion. Going to make one. Thank you.
I really, really enjoyed your video - you speak English, with an English accent! Much, much better than American accents! You also talk to yourself - I felt quite at home! I have fine sand in my pin/needle cushion - stolen from my granddaughters sand pit! - make sure it’s well dried out before you stick sewing accoutrements in!
What s lovely and simple idea. I am inspired to have a go at making one for myself! Just need to get some stuffing and like the idea of the steel wool to help keep needles and pins sharp! 😊
I love pin cushions. This one did not jump out at me at first, but it started to grow on me and when I saw the little saucer made from hand made rope I thought I am going try to make one. Starting with small projects may help to practice my hand sewing. x Blessings x Mariana UK xx
You can use Garnet Sand, (Crushed Garnet Crystals) as pin cushion filler. It sharpens pins and needles when you push them in and the weight is really nice to have for a work surface pin cushion. I’ve made a few of the large strawberries with garnet sand. I can’t wait to make a Biscornu Pin Cushion, maybe a garnet ‘button’ in the center will work for sharpening. The Garnet Sand is easy to find online, eBay etc.
I have made pin cushions stuffed with crushed walnut shells, it came from a pet shop, I think it’s used in fish tanks? It comes in rather large bags so I have enough to make as many pin cushions as I could ever want and still some to bequeath after I’m gone! But it does make great pincushions, it’s very fine so you need tight seams to keep it all in or I make a little pouch for it and stitch it on the machine, then put it in the pin cushion and fill any gaps with normal stuffing! ❤
Here in the us we use lizard litter which is I believe walnut shells. It is pretty cheap and you get it from a pet store or online. Works great for pincushions. Hope this helps.❤
I have noticed those pin cushions on your table or desk. I think that they are so unusual and beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial! I do plan on making one. I watch your videos and just subscribed. I am a crafty person also. I love knitting and crocheting. I am so interested in quilting. Both of my grandmothers quilted. I have considered making a quilt in the slow stitching. Such beautiful items that you make. Happy stitching!❤
Oui!
Finally made one of these … the shape looks so cool, but it’s really quite simple …. I have some ground walnut shells I bought on Etsy years ago, it seems. Just in time, too. I’ve had one of those Chinese circles with the characters all around holding hands, and the satin on the top is finally wearing through, so I can’t tip it over. I may go up to a 6 or even 7” square and make it two tone like you did, because I keep tons of needles and pins in my little Chinese cushion. Maybe time to make a needle case with specific page for the different sizes I use, because the two flap one I have won’t hold much, and I like loading up my needles, say 10 at a time so I’m not fiddling with it. Thank you again, for sharing this beautifully shaped pin cushion
I think I will prep a couple of these and use them as the next craft for my grandchildren and myself at our next visit. I have a sofa covered in that red floral fabric lol
Great to pass it on to the next generation. I think it's a Moda French General, the scrap I had had some selvedge on it... 😉 Wonderful to have a whole sofa of it. 😁❤️
This is the perfect pincushion size and shape for me, I absolutely love it and a joy to make. I’ve made two already and I see many more to come. Thank you.
This afternoon it was too hot to be in the garden so I sat and hemmed a dress I had made. I thoroughly enjoy handstitching it’s soothing and your mind can wander. Then this evening I found your channel and now guess what I’m going to make tomorrow. I did enjoy watching you stitch and thank you for sharing your art even way down in New Zealand x
Oh, I've just found your video, how wonderful. I'm going to try to make some Biscornu pin cushions for family. Thank you for the idea and I'm looking forward to the saucer video.
Maybe baking the walnut shells to dry them out a bit, it may make them more brittle, and that might help with the crushing. I've never tried it but just an idea 😊 love your channel btw, I have been working my way through your videos and love them ❤️
Thank you, I did bake them but still tough as old boots 😜 I have given up on the idea, I will just use them for dyeing instead. And welcome, lovely to have you here ❤️
@k3n.clothtales Ahh cool 😄 you have to wonder how they grind them down then 😄 thank you for the welcome and I've just finished making my little Biscornu Pin Cushion and have now started making the twine for the saucer part 😀. I honestly have no idea how I stumbled on your channel but it's an absolute treasure 🥰 thank you for taking the time to teach others you are very refreshing. I really appreciate you 🥰
Well I don’t know really. I’m just hopeless at sewing buttons on so this is how I do it if need to “cinch” something in. I’m definitely going to make one. Thank you for such clear instructions ❤
I am so sorry, my comment was incorrect because I thought I was responding on another recent video where I made an envelope pouch with a button closure! 😂 I need to pay more attention. Yes, you are absolutely right, for the pin cushion, what you describe makes perfect sense. 😁❤️
I’ve just made mine, and the twine with which I’m going to make the adorable little basket. Everybody I know is going to get one of these for Christmas. Is there an easy way to cut out a square of cloth? I ended up cutting around a cocktail napkin 😂
I have made a cross stitch biscornu pin cushion in the past but I love the look of this one and I think it would make a great little Christmas present. Thank you for sharing
Wow ! Katherine what a simply but very beautiful pin cushion ❤, I was so intrigued how it was put together x I have not got a pin cushion yet so here one comes !and thank you for the warning I am new to sewing so I do that what I am not to do with the needle but I will NOT anymore xx I do not realise I have done it sometimes but then I talk , I have no excuse so Thank you I will say to my self this whilst I am sewing xx I absolutely love you chatting and love your stories you tell us has you sew so lovely , just like been in a cosy room with a lovely friend having a lovely cuppa tea x ❤ I m going to make one this afternoon x What lucky friends you have with your beautiful gifts of Biscornu pin cushions & your other beautiful sewing x❤❤ Thank you again Katherine I really love your channel xx ❤❤❤
thank you for your lovely message, I am still guilty of putting needles (and pins) in my mouth from time to time but I really shouldn't! My name is spelled Kathryn, one of the reasons why my husband came up with k3n years ago, to avoid confusions with the spelling. 😁 But I answer to any or all variations. 🥰
Thank you for such a fun. easy craft to make both for yourself and your sewing friends! I have had a bag if crushed walnuts I have saved for years. I feel the need to ue them now. from a fellow Kathryn.
Please don't ever think you are boring. It's a joy just to sit, watch you videos. It's almost like keeping you company while your sewing, so don't be afraid to chatter on, it's lovely, and no flipping music, horay ❤ 👋🏼🏴
Thank you so much, yes it truly does feel like you are keeping me company while I am sewing 🥰
My mother always put steel wool in the middle and wrapped it with cotton stuffing. She said the steel wool help to keep the needle sharp.
Yes this is what I was taught as well 😊
That's a good idea, maybe for this one, shape the steel wool into a ring so it's easier to sew the button through the middle 😉😊
What a great pin cushion..yes I've got walnut crushed ( which I bought) ..thankyou Kath
Your mother’s idea is brilliant!
Thank your for a great tutorial!
I bought some crushed walnuts on Amazon and on the container it says, “Walnut Shell blast and tumble media”. It’s a 12-20 grit.

My grandfather used to crush walnuts by placing them in a bag and driving over them several times on the hard paved driveway!
Hi Katherine, Thank you so much for inspiring me to have a go & relax & do some hand stitching as I always use my machine. I sat & sewed along with you & loved the finished result. Very nice!! I've never heard of biscornu.
Wow! Google Biscornu ( a french word meaning quirky, skewed) and look at the images. The embroidery designs are just beautiful. Thanks for showing me this pincushion pattern. 😊
You're welcome just answered your question but see you have googled. 😁 Yes they can be really elaborate and beautiful ❤️

Fabulous! I'd love to make a larger one as a pillow for a young girl. Thank you

I've done two pouches and a book cover inspired by your videos. Now I have to go and make a biscornu. 😊
happy I am keeping you busy 😉
Oh, I've just found your video, how wonderful. I'm going to try to make some Biscornu pin cushions for family. Thank you for the idea and I'm looking forward to the saucer video.
Have fun! ❤
Love this 💓
Very nice! I will try!
Very nice. I’ll try one your way. My daughter made me one she cross-stitched in blue. I love it.
Thank you Darlene ♥️
Loved the video thank you
Maybe baking the walnut shells to dry them out a bit, it may make them more brittle, and that might help with the crushing.
I really appreciate you 🥰
Another good Word is. Tarabiscote !
That was smashing. Such a good idea for Christmas presents. It was like sitting and sewing with a friend. Thank you.
such a lovely thing to say, thank YOU ♥️
So enjoyed yr video ❤❤❤
thank you ♥️
Will do the biscornu later though I did some a few years back. For now still working on my rice bag. Love your videos.
No rush, enjoy the rice bag, the biscornu will wait patiently 😁🥰
What fun. Thank you Katherine.🙋🏼♀️🇦🇺
It's my pleasure ☺️
If you run the stitches through before you add the button it helps to hold it tight and then you only have to go through the button once or twice
Thank you, at first I thought I didn't want the stitches showing inside, then I changed my mind 😂 but you are absolutely right ❤️
Well I don’t know really.
Great idea!
I’ve just made mine, and the twine with which I’m going to make the adorable little basket. Everybody I know is going to get one of these for Christmas. Is there an easy way to cut out a square of cloth? I ended up cutting around a cocktail napkin 😂
Adorable pincushion. Thanks for the great video
Thank you too! ❤
I have made a cross stitch biscornu pin cushion in the past but I love the look of this one and I think it would make a great little Christmas present. Thank you for sharing

Just lovely…btw cat hair is part of my diet .🤣
Great source of fibre 🤣❤️

Thank you again Katherine I really love your channel xx ❤❤❤
Hope I have your name correct please let me know if you would like me to use your channel name only xx❤
thank you for your lovely message, I am still guilty of putting needles (and pins) in my mouth from time to time but I really shouldn't!
Hello fellow Kathryn! You're welcome ♥️
Walnut shells are great for dyeing so they are still useful! ;)
yes, I use them for dyeing, along with the husks ♥️
