Wow … how many times have I discarded strips of fabric?! But never again. What a brilliant tutorial. Thank you. I often make thinner cord with a lucet (I’ve even made shoelaces) but the fabric cording opens up masses more options. ❤️
This is such a fun & useful idea! As a lifetime quilter/seamstress I have a room full of fabric, tools, machines, etc... In addition, i have inherited my mother's sewing things. She was a heirloom seamstress, making lovely baby dresses, wedding dresses, etc... all in silks, Swiss & French cottons and beautiful laces. Being a quilter I save the tiniest of scraps and have saved them for almost 50 years. I plan on spending the rest of my life using them up (in addition to my quilts and dresses). The way you've developed this slow stitching would make a wonderful way to teach youngsters to sew. I have a granddaughter who is 7 and anxious to learn. Of course I cant wait to teach her and put together a sewing basket for her. Currently Im hand piecing small quilt blocks. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea. Its amazing to see how many people are interested. I suppose, because sewing is usually a solitary activity, i forget there are others who do the same thing and do msny who want to learn. Thank you for doing this snd sharing your lovely creations.
My pleasure, your collection of cloth and laces sound scrumptious ❤️ yes I do believe the slowstitch ethos is great for children and in fact novices of all ages, because there are few rules, no emphasis on perfect results and it teaches respect for materials and to enjoy the process. I am truly overwhelmed with the response also, and of course delighted. It feels a little like a cyber sewing bee, community connection through the internet. 😁❤️
Oh wow this is so amazing I have raw silks and lace that I've gathered over the years. I love looking at them and feeling them they're just so precious 💞 Oh that's so awesome that you're teaching your granddaughter these things well it will be such a beautiful gift for her. To learn!Wow💗🤗💞
I have so many things to say. first, thank you for this video. second, your little sewing pouch is adorable that fabric is beautiful! third, I have scrap fabric strips I have been saving for years. just to keep my hands busy I used to make braids with the strips. today I was on Etsy looking for some rustic cord for a sewing project when I came across twine. it was what i was looking for, but a tad pricey. so, I decided to come to RUclips to find a vid on how to make it and here i am. you just saved me a lot of money and put my scraps to great use. i mostly use knit fabrics. wish me luck 😊
The things you make and demonstrate for others to make are so beautiful. I so enjoy your soft, soothing and clear voice. You are so inspiring❤. Thank you so much for your time in sharing all the ways you create new and repurposed cloth, twins, strings etc. I hope to begin a project or two soon! Again, many thanks!

Catherine, I had surgery on my hand about a month ago. I’m an avid stitcher and so I took that month and watched a lot of your videos. I’ve really enjoyed it and I’ve learned so much. Now that my hand is healing I will be back to stitching, and hopefully I will be able to use a lot of your techniques and information in the future. I so appreciate your making this so real. I love the memories you share, and the stories you tell while you’re teaching us.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you. I loved seeing the beautiful things you have made and am inspired to have a go myself. The colours and textures and the hand stitching are such a compelling combination.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your makes and your process. Your work is truly beautiful and I am genuinely inspired to get started on my own projects. Please keep your videos coming.
Thank you so much, Kathryn, for sharing this and all your other videos. I have always been someone who did things 'by the book', as that is how I was taught.....but your videos have opened up so many more possibilities for me, and made me accept the fact that there is really no 'wrong' way to do something, just 'another' way......and now i have so many ideas waiting to burst forth! Thank you again! X
I watched your meditation video and OMG I loved it. When I get stressed I now take the pieces of fabric, sew little lines, put it on the wooden thread spool and it is so mesmerizing and settles my mind. Little things in life have more meaning than something big. People have started asking me what my spools are since I have them in quilting room, on display…Love it.
Hello Lovely Kathryn, I wanted to comment to let you know how much I have enjoyed your videos. I feel as if I am right there in your studio with you. I’m so happy to have found your channel! Thank you for sharing all of your skills. Your voice and sense of humor make all of your videos so enjoyable! I look forward to seeing and learning more! Thank you for all that you do! ❤
Going to start working on these so that I have practice for the Japanese rice bag - so excited for that - and for a friend gift for her book making. Will also work great for finishing my needlework and crosstitch. Thank you!

Thank you , I enjoy watching and learning . I think making cloth twine should come with an addiction warning, it’s so quick and satisfying to make something from nothing . I made some twine , and then had to made a rice bag to use it, and now I’m on my way to making a bowl. I like that you say ‘ you do you’ , although I like to tear cloth and know I’m on the straight of grain , for my twine I don’t like all the strands of thread so now I cut it, a lot slower but that’s fine . Thanks again.
I still miss mine! They weighed a ton, full of beads and cloth wraps and stuff, but it was like having an ongoing art project attached to my head. And they patted me on the back as I walked, which was affirming 😂😊❤️
I have been periodically addicted to making twine from my fabric stash, so thanks for showing your baskets! And thank you for saying "funkayyyy" the way you do.
4:03 I learned this at school with wool. Another person takes one end and you both twist in opposite directions until tight. You can use one strand or 2 looped through each other to make 2 colours. One of you then grasps the middle with 2 fingers and shakes it rapidly. The 2 sides then rapidly twist together like magic. It may work with fabric too. Love all your creations!
I used my drop spindle to twist the fabric into 'thread''/cord and now I'm trying to figure out if I can spindle the 2 colors into a plied cord. It works with yarn when I re-ply it into new colors! lol Not sure how this is going to go. I like the bulk and strength of using cloth strips for shoulder pouch straps and can think of thousands of things to make now [exaggeration]! I want to make matching twist piping for a jacket I'm about to finish. Should work. lol Thanks so much for the inspiration and lesson! {I like your version of this project for road trips - no tools to poke my hands over lumpy roads, just a bag of cloth strips - the time will fly because I will be concentrating hard on this project!} ❄❄💚💚💚❄❄ 8:57 good advice! 18:26 It makes me want to make a hat out of the twine watching you squish it around like that! lol Future project...

The twining you demonstrate is essentially what happens when yarn is "plyed" together on a spinning wheel. So, with that being said and not having read all the comments here, I'm wondering if anyone has tried twining/plying fabric strips on their wheels? Oh dear....yet another project idea to warrant dusting off my wheel! ❤
Your twining is what some of us hairdressers call a rope braid. Its very beautiful.
Thank you, I also now twine my hair instead of braiding it 😁❤️
yes! ever since i started twining fabric a few years back, I end up doing my hair this way too, instead of a braid.

I love this so much. Thank you!
Excellent, Thank you lovely : )
The twining you demonstrate is essentially what happens when yarn is "plyed" together on a spinning wheel. So, with that being said and not having read all the comments here, I'm wondering if anyone has tried twining/plying fabric strips on their wheels? Oh dear....yet another project idea to warrant dusting off my wheel! ❤
I am not a spinner but do believe I read a comment somewhere from someone saying they had tried it and I think it worked but don't quote me 😁😁
Well that was interesting, thank you for sharing, I love learning new interesting things…I subscribed.
thank you and welcome ♥️
You sure have to have strong hands, I have RA, it’s not as easy as it looks.
@@tammywinter9268 I am sorry for your poor hands 😔❤️
