You commented, "I'm only worrying about the next inch or so. I'm not worrying about the rest of it. I'm not there yet." Yesterday my therapist (who I talk with by phone once a month) and I were discussing the healing powers of creativity. I was telling her about our beautiful group and how, when I am stitching, everything else falls away. We talked about stitching as a way to manage anxiety and how when we are focused on the needle, thread, and cloth, we are fully engaged in the present moment. Later I was thinking about how, when we get around to healing ourselves, we are actually healing the world...our little cloth is a corner of the greater tapestry. Creativity is empowering.

Kathryn… your wittering is always good. In the early days there may have been a few more whimsical stories… things were a bit more carefree perhaps. Then you went through your sad voice period where we agonized with you as you went through your transition. The sad, unconfident voice has moved on but you are changed. Your wittering is deeper, more thoughtful, more big picture, more important. You help us to see the art and meaning in things and uncover truth. I’m so proud of you and have loved all your periods and will continue to cheer you on and benefit from your wisdom. ❤

I just came back from the kitchen with a cereal bowl. The TOH raised his eyebrows slightly and said, “Have you just turned your bowl upside down?” He’s being marvellously accepting of all the weird things (like collage!) that I have never done before, but some things just need checking out, just to be on the safe side! This time I needed to draw a circle of course.

Yes, you are different. You’re grieving and healing… your process.
I check in on you and check out what you’re doing. But, full candor, if you are too melancholy or withdrawn (sometimes rambling all over) I fast forward.
I’m not doing a comfort clothe, I just spent a year mourning the loss of my only brother. I am an orphan, the oldest one left in my immediate family . No grandparents, no Aunts, no Uncles, cousins-7 on maternal side and 8 on paternal- none live close anymore like when we were kids playing together everyday or week.
I’m in the moment and I’m caring for self all the time.
I’m only 73 and it’s a harsh reality- I know myself quite well.
I do my ‘thing’ and focus on looking forward while absorbing all of the present- whatever each new day brings.
I am fortunate to have my companion, friend and lover of 53 years by my side everyday. I am rooted in my community and childhood home- actually family home for over 200 years.
Hang in there, you’ve got a loyal following.

I was just fascinated by the top and trousers, you were wearing today, I love clothes which are "different". Perhaps you could wear it on Friday's Q&A????
If anyone doesn't wish to be stitching a comfort cloth, they could stitch a comfort scroll and stitch a comfort journal on Mondays.
I think your story telling will come back when you are more settled, it is very early days yet.

Thanks so much for sharing your process here. I adore the ‘band of gold’ sari silk circle and the heart. It feels like you’re telling a story through stitch and cloth…I have made a start on my comfort cloth, after agonising about it for a couple of weeks! However, it’s on the back burner as I go on holiday to Madeira in three weeks and I have to finish off two patchwork hobo-style bags for friends’ birthdays before I leave 😱. My fingers are worn away to stumps. I’m going to take my comfort cloth on holiday and I shall thoroughly enjoy catching up with it all and stitching some happy holiday memories into it…
Yes, I too have realised that you haven’t been story telling in your videos for a while now. This last year has been brutal to you and I think that your personality and confidence can’t help but change to adapt to all the challenges. You will find your mojo again, and it might be different to your ‘old mojo’ but I pray that you find peace and happiness soon. Sending love always ❤

Good morning Kathryn . I was imaginative and creative as a child 🥸; however parents discouraged it and then life demanded logical reasoning for my family life and career 🤓. Now retired and struggle to initiate creativity … looking at my collected cloths, tiddly bits and paper that I’ve been collecting (following your example as a creative); I just can’t imagine what to create. Your withering about your thought process, encouragement to do you and each creative idea you put into the journals and comfort cloth have been extremely helpful to spark the sleeping creative back to life. I wait excitedly for M, W, F videos and then do my stitching and collaging following your creative lead. I do have a question which I’ll post on the community page but just wanted to share how positively impactful your time and your self that you share has been and is for me. I find it very healing and comforting in ways I can’t express. Thank you Kathryn .

All kinds of Kathryn wittering is wonderful: stories or telling us what you are doing or telling us how you are feeling. It's all good. It is totally normal that your thinking and feeling and wittering is going through a roller coaster ride after the events of the past year. Having been through a very similar situation myself in my past, I can assure you that your brain and your emotions will find their natural level as time goes on. I predict that by the end of this year, you will be back to telling stories. We shall see if I am right..... 🙂 and.... the brain fog will eventually disappear. It just takes time.........

I find that with any creativity that the more you go with the flow and listen to what is needed, the more you use your intuition and the more it grows the more you can trust it and eventually you become less concerned about the outcome and more focused on the process ..... Yes you are different. The life changing events are changing you. Your voice is softer, your thoughts and witterings are inward looking at the moment. It is all interesting, the stitching is fascinating as are the thought processes you share. Thank you for all of it!

Our histories and life stories are not made up of whole cloth, as this comfort cloth can attest. If you are telling fewer stories right now, it might be because a major life change can sometimes cast our memories in a very different light, causing us to rethink the significance of this or that experience... It's ok if this contemplative stitching is quieter right now. A whole new tapestry of memories and interpretations may be coming to light.

Love this project. Started my coverlet using mostly new fabrics cuz that’s what I have. I did find some reclaimed cottons and some hand dyed ones also and using an old sheet for backing. Made the mistake of stitching all around the edge of my square, because I thought it would hold it together better and because I couldn’t wait😂, so now I will remove that stitching. It’s just running stitch so shouldn’t be too bad. I can cut the fabric back then and leave a border on the backing and a half inch unstitched edge on the front cloth. I was going to wait and see what kind of joining method you would advise but I’m just going to fix it now then can go forward with the easiest method. Thanks for sharing this Kathryn, I’m really enjoying it. ❤

Am greatly enjoying following your process, Kathryn, and really like both the front and the back of the comfort cloth you're making. That incomplete circle could be a hug... or the openness of your (woolly) heart to love from all those in your life who care about you.
Yes, I've noticed there are fewer anecdotes at the moment: there is much to adjust to after a challeging year, and the depth of winter is a good time to hunker down and realign your personal compass. I hope you'll continue to do things the way it suits your mood and your needs. Whatever form your creativity takes, everyone here is the richer for your inspiration and calming company.
May you continue to heal in all ways.
    Thank-you for another thought-provoking video. ❤

You were talking about your Granny’s shawl and it struck me that I have some of my Grandma’s embroidery pieces that my mom cut off of a worn pillow case. I need to find an add to my comfort cloth. To think that something she made with her hands and then laid her head down on will be precious to add. As for your quietness compared to earlier videos, I just want you to know that just as the Earth is blanketed in Winter to sleep and heal, so are you. Slowly healing and building strength for the next phase of your journey. Periods of quiet are healing. And I am sure next week you will have some fun story to share with us.

I, too, like to work intuitively. I start with a vague idea and allow whatever to unfold or arise happen. I do this with all my creating. It makes for some very individual and often quite enlightening processes. Did you know the symbol of the heart is actually two human hearts joined together? So it is a symbol of conunctio or unity. When we use broken hearts it is about separation of the two. So when we feel broken hearted it is usually about separation from a loved one by death, or living separately for whatever reason. Its recently been discovered that women, particularly , can have a heart attack caused by feeling broken hearted.
Have you read any of Clarissa Pinkola Estes books? I have a series of tapes of hers which I found so helpful during the height of my journey.
I did chuckle at your description of being out front singing an aria.😂 I am stitching my scrappy quilt pieces together now. What a big job. Its so satisfying.
    Lots of love.❤❤❤

I have noticed the change but I assumed it’s because it’s winter. Everything slows in winter. It’s not a chatty time of year, it’s more reflective imo
So, I didn’t want to cut my backing which is a soft full size sheet, so the first week, I stitched the nine patch to the middle of it, then stitched on top and added more patches around on the second week. When I saw the circle and heart in this video, I was struck by the coincidence because on week one, I stitched circles in the center and a heart on one of the corner patches. I’m really enjoying the process.

And you're both working with grief, Marion lost her husband a bit ago, and RUclips might have been a distraction, but now that novelty is wearing off. I don't know. We, your fans, are just following along. The difference between this and television is that you're a real person who has ups & downs, it's not a show you put on. The authenticity shows through. There are plenty of other channels I could go to for smiling, energetic, happy happy perfect presentation. You don't need to be one.
I added batting/wading to my piece and I'm liking it mainly because I can choose to sometimes hide my back stitching and sometimes let it come through as quilting the layers. We'll see. Cheers Kathryn, thanks.

I'm absolutely loving this project..... even though I haven't started mine yet..... LOL. I have two decisions to make before I can start...... just my own rule for this project 🙂 I want to use a backing layer that is the same for the whole coverlet..... so my first decision is what to use for my backing layer. I have 2 choices: a sheet that is not particularly old, but it is 100% cotton and the 2nd option is a lightweight flannel sheet that is soft and lovely to handle. So I am in the process of doing some experiments stitching various top layer pieces on to both the cotton sheet and the flannel sheet and make a final decision. My 2nd decision is which of my very very very limited pieces of fabric that belonged to my beloved late granny I want to use as the center for this first block. Once I have decided on my backing layer and which granny piece to use, I'll be ready to fly ahead full steam ahead !!!! P.S. I much prefer your way of couching. I was not familiar with that way of doing it. Thank you for teaching me that !!!

Made me laugh nearly sewing it to your trousers, me too. I tend to work on my knee on comfy settee. Not a good thing to do.

Is there a laundrette near you, Kathryn? Then you could get the quilt covers and sheets dry without waiting for a long dry and windy day - you might have a long wait. Going with the seasons might have its limits in a very small dwelling like yours.

About telling stories: I wonder if there is a time to listen to stories and a time to tell stories? When everything in a person’s life is made to swivel around to try and find a different perspective, for example after a bereavement, or another kind of loss, then maybe there isn’t a clear place in which to sit and tell a story? Meanwhile, here and in other places, like the Facebook group, others have stories for us to listen to.

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales  6 дней назад

Yes that's a very interesting idea. I was also wondering if that's why I asked you for questions. I filmed for over an hour this morning, wittering away, almost felt like my old self. The internet is being slow so it's still uploading 😞

    • @ninaindoorssinging4715

@ I had a funny but familiar reaction to the invitation to ask a question: my mind went blank. Reminded me that the girls grammar school I went to questions and discussion were not encouraged, until we got to the 6th form that is. By then we were conditioned to accept and learn rather than query things. However, I can’t really blame school now! Even the type of therapy I chose to train in operated without the therapist asking direct questions, and that suited me very well!

After watching all of your videos from the beginning, I am finally joining in and really enjoying it so far. I have even bought some appliqué pins, and now seem to spend my entire life picking them up from around the house! 😂 Yesterday I found one in the bathroom and picked up 11 from the floor under my work table. Thankfully I haven’t stood on one yet! ‘My little woolly heart is fragile’ sounds like the opening line for a poem. One question, how is overcast stitch different from whip stitch, or are they two different names for the same thing?
