Thanks Russ By the way my hometown is here in mayfield ky where the F4 tornado came thru I’m fine but my grandson was trapped in the candle factory for 3 hrs 15ft beneath rubble , when he was dug out he was un injured Thank God
If you can get the scenery in the shot when using POI or Spotlight, then use those modes for that. Active Track for humans is usually recorded fairly close, and this is similar with skydio which also jumps all over the place in active track mode. Yes refinement is needed and should come and I think it will get better .thanks for the video.
I can see the huge potential of the Mavic 3 to be one with a superb tracking ability, though from what I'm guessing DJI's still refining this feature. I can't wait to experience the tracking feature at it's most optimal state!
A great improvement for a DJI *CONSUMER* drone- for far too much money. *The $3000 price point should have included the smart controller, for sure.* You can now buy the Air2s fly more with the Smart controller for $1700... only $400 more!!!! So why does DJI have to charge *$1200* more for an ala carte and not include it in the $3000 package? But no. They for $3k they give you the Mini 2 controller. The Mavic 2 came with a deluxe controller with a data screen and the same buttons as on a smart controller. They could have sold the M3 flymore +SC for $2600 using the same model as the Air2s+smart controller. Am I missing something????
To work well, DJI needs something like the Skydio beacon, as well as more than just the short range ultrasonic distance sensors. The DJI runs quite blind compared to the skydio. I would hope that Skydio ALSO uses ultrasonic sensors combined with their current visual AI.
I believe that the only way for the aircraft to know which one is your left or right, front or back is only while you are moving (you are a vector). If you are standing still you are just a dot, and the GPS inaccuracy may confuse the drone and it will act awkward. Nice experiments!
Nicely focused on the focus track options. There is one more which is parallel tracking You haven't tested Yet. Maybe it's interesting too. I think DJI will fix focus track and maybe improve it in the next one or two firmware updates.
Thank you for another great video production. Learned a few things and gives me some confirmation that some of the odd behaviors are shared by other M3 owners.
Thank you for the great video.🤩 You know I believe you are unable to adjust the altitude when return to home has been initiated and in progress unlike the air2. Seems they should allow an individual more control in some of these features, especially for the price of this drone.✌️
hi, thanx for the good overview about active track. Where did you find the information which kind of „objects“ you can track? I tried to track my dog with the Mavic3 and it told me, that only persons and vehicles could be tracked. I was very surprised of that. Do you think they will open it up with a later firmware for Animals like dogs or horses?
I think the limiting factor is the obstacle avoidance. It will need time to process everything. I don't know whether you can turn it off, but maybe that should be an option.
I had the exact same thing happen to me using "Active Track". When it was in front of me flying backward while I was walking it seemed to develop a mind of its own and was jumping all over the place to the point I had to stop the process and get it under control. In addition, I could not set the desired distance away from me as well. I am sure they will get it fixed but until then I am leaving "Active Track" alone until they do.
Hopefully DJI can make the Mavic 3 Active Track like the Skydio 2. I really like how aggressive and fast it changes orientation when using the phone or beacon. I've been wanting to get a Skydio 2 for some time so I can take it on hikes...but my heart it with dji
Thanks for sharing, especially as I have been testing out the tracking features with mediocre success. Yesterday was at the waterfront and had a jet skier performing some turns, but the M3 just would not recognise him as an object. Spotlight did work great on a larger boat. It was a very cloudy day, so I wondered if it was because of a lack on contrast with the smaller objects but maybe a jet ski is not in the algorithm! Today on a job and it was also having problems with people as well! Definitely need to see some significant improvements in the next upgrade.
Great video Russ. I was getting ready to order me a lume cube for my air 2s. So glad I watched this video first. I ordered it through your channel so you get the credit.
Wow Russ. Your insight is on par with every one else. These things are not behaving right “a mind of its own” is something I’ve heard on many channels. I would not trust any of these beta auto features YIKES. Twigs take out $20 drones and $5000 drones. Not enough contrast and lack of leaves in winter for active track through scraggle branches. Thanks for keeping my money safe and convincing me not to buy this drone. Air2S with RC pro is my happy spot. Can we get metal props to cut small branches? Haha kidding(not really) Again thanks for your time Russ.
Good info. I’ve found especially when tracking from the front it is far too close. Other bummer is that dlog doesn’t work with the active track modes. Even with the m3c. Maybe coming? But who knows with DJI.
Using POI. You should wear brighter colors , snow background wearing a light gray hoodie. . Not enough contrast colors. Good video Russs but that drone is over my price range for toys
I think DJI are feeling the pressure from the community about their odd choices with this drone, that and Christmas sales no doubt made them drop this update early. Let's hope the actual update we're waiting for fixes all these odd quirks and turns this drone into the drone we all thought we were going to get.
Wow, I experienced the exact same "seizure" moment yesterday.. I set active track on me and was slowly walking on a football field, I changed the orientation from left to right and the M3 started jerking and even gained altitude, almost like it was freaking out, I hit the pause button. I love the M3 but the latest firmware update needs work!
This drone definitely is an improvement to the Mavic series; I had the chance to fly one recently and I was impressed. For my drone business I still am holding off until we get some more solid info on remote ID from the FAA
How does it tackle this when the subject is changing elevation? I tried to get the Air to follow me downhill while skiing, but that was not easy. It just sayed at the starting elevation and lost me after couple of seconds. Same going uphill. The Air would just fly sideways into the ground after a short climb.
Excellent video….with such an expensive drone why not ask for recall “solution” as in cars … if a drone isn’t ready we should get more options to get satisfaction if the drone fail because it is malfunction .
I'm not going to jump on the Mavic 3 just yet. I bought my Mavic 2 Zoom just over a year after release. The best drone purchase I have ever made. You mention the 3 will not track a quad, my Mavic 2 Zoom is nearly flawless in it's ability to track me on my quad, more than a few times up to 30 mph. Hopefully, DJI will get all these shortfalls figured out in the future. Until then, I'll stick with my Zoom, short battery life not withstanding.
I'm returning mine. They're allowing me to after 36 days because i've had 5 support cases. I want to love the Mavic 3 sooooo freakin bad but it's just not reliable at this point. I'll look into it again in 4-6 months, but for now... $5k back in my wallet.
As always, thanks for all your vids. Your superb product is what drove you to 166k subscribers - for sure!!! Do you know whether there are plans to support planned and stored way point routes on the M3?
Ok I have a questions… did you notice if the cold temperatures had any part to play. The reason I ask is with my mavic2 pro when I go the my location ski area the active track kinda does the same thing… hunting…. So it makes me wonder if the sensors fog up and it can’t see?
Great review! Thank you. With the elevated price premium of a M3, a product that’s not finished, I expect way better performance than this. The disappointed M2 Pro owner.
I know everyone says the Skydio-2 is the best in the business for tracking but always mention that it lacks other features. I'm curius to see if the Mavic can fill all those roles or can the Skydio really be end all be all of drones. At least for hobbiest alike.
I would like to see a test when you are driving down the road and there are telephone / power lines to the side of the road. If the drone is at or below the elevation of those does the obstacle avoidance work in avoiding the poles and the lines themselves?
Hey Russ, as usual great report, testing, analysis, and narrative. But I have a question: what's that white stuff all over the ground? Here in Florida if it's white and falls outta the sky we know better than to go play in it!
I’ve noticed a change with my mavic 2, I can not make the gimbal go up while flying forward. I figured it was a safety update not sure though. I can have the gimbal set at 10 and as I move forward it goes back to 3
The reason it tracts very sporadically sometimes is because when its set to track from front it will search for your face. So, when you turn your head it will spin around to keep your face in view.
I really see no use for active track. I think DJI have done a great job with active track as it is, but no one post any videos of a use for active track. Realistically tracking a fast object would be impossible, look at movies with a car race in it, it’s normally taken from a high altitude to capture vehicle’s , or a camera strapped to a second race car behind, front or from the side. I like that you mentioned “gives us something to complain about” Imagine the cost if all the complaints were answered, people are crying now yet want more. This drone is just the best ever.
Honestly when I saw the low quality small sensor camera above the high quality large sensor. I knew this drone just wasn't going to be for me and so far it's proven to be the case. I will wait until the release an updated version with a little more common sense features and a little less book smarts. I honestly am so glad I didn't making this purchase. My air 2s and soon to be Nano+ .. I think fill all the right gaps as I wait for DJI to create updated version of mavic pro 3 and I will probably wait to see what the mini 3 does before buying it. I think DJI is just missing some direction right now from the top. It's easy to be number one when you don't have much competition, we are starting to see that change now and seems like DJI is starting to show some of their weaknesses.
Great video Russ. Do you think the wandering on active track is due to snow? Possibility of lack of overall point to reference with snow blindness or reflection...may be the same on vast amounts of sand/beach area.
With the Mavic 2 Pro, using any of the tracking features in the DJI Go app also disabled the ability to record HDR (HLG 10 bit) video while that tracking feature was in use. HDR (HLG) video recording is only available on the M2 Pro when flying manually. Has this been addressed in the Mavic 3?
I wish this aircraft was more polished from the release. I returned mine. It simply isn't worth the money and I was having too many issues. Thanks for sharing the video though.
Please please please make a video about waypoint hyper lapse. I have issues with it where I set both of my waypoint. Let’s say for example 1,2,3 and when I hit go it goes to the first point. And then it just stays there. It doesn’t proceed to the second point. And this makes me so angry.
I think DJI should have waypoint on the Mavic 3. It's totally required and essential for image creators. Why? To shoot a clip properly, you really need to shoot it more than one flight. Waypoint is required here to be constant. Waypoint is a flight plan. Nobody should fly anything without a flight plan, right? Please talk to DJI. Please.
“Nothing can see those twigs the size of a spaghetti noodle”. Yup i have a $350 repair on my M3 to prove you are right. But what about ARTH (advanced return to home).? isn’t it going to hunt those little spaghetti noodle twigs every time? I just can’t wrap my head around how this is suppose to work. My confidence is shaking enough right now I don’t plan on flying anything other than stick mode as APAS can’t be trusted unless one lives in a treeless world which i don’t as Sacramento, CA is coined “the city of trees!”
Thank you so much. Very good review and you make me want to buy this drone. Expensive for me. But I really want and I may be able to buy some days soon. Can you please do me a favor and make a test like send the drone over the mountain and take photo instead of hiking a long way. Thank you so much.
What are you talking about? Cold air doesn't have to be thin at all. Cold air is denser and heavier than warm air at the same location. That's how weather physics works. I don't see him in the mountains high above sea level, getting into thin air.
I’m just not seeing the value of having a drone follow me through a thicket of branches at eye level. It’s an aerial device.. Also, Active Track behaves differently depending on the subject. Also, DJI never gave specs for how fast the drone will follow in Active Track. In fact, I’m still trying to figure out what exactly should be fixed. My only complaint for DJI is where’s the SDK for mapping developers?
Thanks for the info Russ, but I have a question. I was flying over the Christmas lights on our town square last night and wanted to do a POI of the central tree, and it would not lock on or form the box around it. Is that because it wasn't a person? My question is whether it should even work at night. That was my only time to try and use it, and we have bad weather today, but I will try it again during the day. Some are having issues with the updates. I have the RC Pro and if I can't get it to work, can I delete the Fly App and download it again?
Russ - I don't have a Mavic 3, but I do have a Mavic 2 Pro in cold weather I would have issues, whereas, in the summer I would not. Question: Is the cold weather effecting your drone?
Colonel Obvious says: POI and Active Track Directional control can only determine what "Front", "Left" "Back" is when the subject is MOVING. Further, Really SLOW MOVEMENT causes really SLOW DETERMINATION of position for the drone, incredible as that sounds. I'm finding some quirks, some complete fails, and some amazing successes along the way. Does anyone know the preferred way to report issues to DJI for their development team?
Really strange that people are having inconsistent experiences. I can change horizontal and/or vertical distance, and it stays exactly where I put it. And I can do that while moving or while still.
Thanks Russ
By the way my hometown is here in mayfield ky where the F4 tornado came thru
I’m fine but my grandson was trapped in the candle factory for 3 hrs 15ft beneath rubble , when he was dug out he was un injured Thank God
Sorry to hear. Glad you are ok. Long recovery ahead. We’ve been through a flood, so I know the feeling.
Hi Russ I went through something similar, 100% agree, still a ton of work to do.
Thank you for sharing.
I can see the huge potential of the Mavic 3 to be one with a superb tracking ability, though from what I'm guessing DJI's still refining this feature. I can't wait to experience the tracking feature at it's most optimal state!

Agree! POI is my favorite these days! Even while you're just testing out and playing with the POI settings, the video already look beautiful to me!
To work well, DJI needs something like the Skydio beacon, as well as more than just the short range ultrasonic distance sensors. The DJI runs quite blind compared to the skydio. I would hope that Skydio ALSO uses ultrasonic sensors combined with their current visual AI.
Your reviews are the most honest and fair on YT.
Excellent Test Review Russ, On The Firmware Update For DJI Mavic 3. Thank You Sharing It With Us, and For Taking The Time To Do It.
I believe that the only way for the aircraft to know which one is your left or right, front or back is only while you are moving (you are a vector). If you are standing still you are just a dot, and the GPS inaccuracy may confuse the drone and it will act awkward. Nice experiments!
Love the videos man! My wife and I love sitting in front of the fire and watching your channel. You’re just a good dude to watch. Cheers!
Appreciate that!
I’m glad it’s not just me, it’s far too close when tracking you. Great video Russ and wow that weather is looking nice 👌
Not today! That was our last nice day for at least 2 weeks. 😫
@@51Drones it’s rained here so much recently! I hope we get a break soon but gives DJI more time to fix this update! Have a great Christmas buddy
Thanks for the info, some of these issues coupled with the price - I'll be sticking with my Air 2S for a while!
Great video I took mine to an exposed area and active track exactly as you said, this seriously needs attention, keep up the good work 👍
I need to get out and mess with mine more! In the meantime, these videos are appreciated!
Thank you for the great video.🤩 You know I believe you are unable to adjust the altitude when return to home has been initiated and in progress unlike the air2. Seems they should allow an individual more control in some of these features, especially for the price of this drone.✌️

Very good Russ. Definitely one of the more strange releases by DJI. Hopefully they get everything straightened out.

Nice one Russ, I really hope dji adds these enhancements, much needed!
Thanks for your good info about active track.
Great testing of newly added Focus Track mode. I think it works pretty well, and is an improvement over Focus Track on the Air 2S. Thanks for sharing.
I’m going to stick my Magic 2 Pro for now. Thanks for another good video!

It appears when it was going all over the place on its own. It looks like it was using your remote for orientation.
Using POI. You should wear brighter colors , snow background wearing a light gray hoodie. . Not enough contrast colors. Good video Russs but that drone is over my price range for toys
Great review!
Thank you for sharing.
Excellent testing! Just curious what was the air temperature at the time of video??👍

I dont think it will work with DJI Fly app, but who knows.

100 percent agree
I really see no use for active track.
I think DJI have done a great job with active track as it is, but no one post any videos of a use for active track.
Realistically tracking a fast object would be impossible, look at movies with a car race in it, it’s normally taken from a high altitude to capture vehicle’s , or a camera strapped to a second race car behind, front or from the side.
I like that you mentioned “gives us something to complain about”
Imagine the cost if all the complaints were answered, people are crying now yet want more.
This drone is just the best ever.
I use a rubber tipped stylus for the smaller screen icons.
I think DJI is just missing some direction right now from the top. It's easy to be number one when you don't have much competition, we are starting to see that change now and seems like DJI is starting to show some of their weaknesses.
@2:30 I noticed the obstacle avoidance was not enabled during this activetrack. Was it due to the speed? Thx for the video Russ!
Love the "gives us something to make videos about."
Another good video Russ
Great video Russ. Do you think the wandering on active track is due to snow? Possibility of lack of overall point to reference with snow blindness or reflection...may be the same on vast amounts of sand/beach area.
I don’t think so, because I’ve received comments from others that have also experienced it.
Nice video. I assume it wont track a jet ski doing over 50mph???
I wish this aircraft was more polished from the release. I returned mine. It simply isn't worth the money and I was having too many issues. Thanks for sharing the video though.
Is this only in the Mavic 3 or is there a firmware update for the previous 2 models?
Still best drone for what it is, but could be improved with a few firmware updates hopefully. Come on DJI, Skydio-like performance would be nice.
Please please please make a video about waypoint hyper lapse. I have issues with it where I set both of my waypoint. Let’s say for example 1,2,3 and when I hit go it goes to the first point. And then it just stays there. It doesn’t proceed to the second point. And this makes me so angry.

How you get the App to show Imperial Measurement. Mine stuck in Metric
“Nothing can see those twigs the size of a spaghetti noodle”. Yup i have a $350 repair on my M3 to prove you are right. Looking forward to this Russ 👍
I still use my Mavic 2 pro for tracking
I would like to see active track in low light /night time
4:00 colder thinner air has fewer particles for the blades to contact. That might have caused lower top speed.
What are you talking about? Cold air doesn't have to be thin at all.
Cold air is denser and heavier than warm air at the same location. That's how weather physics works.
I don't see him in the mountains high above sea level, getting into thin air.
@@johnmcmurphy1007 I double checked, and you are right, I had my temps/density of air backwards.
Colder = More dense, and better lift effect
I’m just not seeing the value of having a drone follow me through a thicket of branches at eye level. It’s an aerial device.. Also, Active Track behaves differently depending on the subject. You could use a larger screen that should make the icons larger, or you could use a stylus
I was using with an iPad and it didn’t help with people or a jet skier
So is there no way to just wipe the system and re-install updated firmware?
They just need to replace active track with some other feature. This is the 5th integration of active track with very incremental progress at best.
is it neccessory to use with a wide angle lens or anamorphic Lens ?
as a hobbyist staying with Air2s proven tech from the Mavic air family.
I think they will fix issues with active track and other firmware updates
nice truck!
Thanks. Best truck I’ve ever owned!
It needs contrast to lock on, so it doesn’t work well in low light.
people have experience and reported gimbal wobble in mastershot..
Russ - I don't have a Mavic 3, but I do have a Mavic 2 Pro in cold weather I would have issues, whereas, in the summer I would not. Question: Is the cold weather effecting your drone?
No, I don’t believe so. People in warmer climates are having similar issues.
Appreciate your explanation regarding active track. On a sidenote current administration blacklisted DJI
Ross, you need Inspire 2. Write DJI for free sample, as always.
They always reply on Twitter
@@51Drones Thanks Russ.
Really strange that people are having inconsistent experiences. I can change horizontal and/or vertical distance, and it stays exactly where I put it. And I can do that while moving or while still.
🤔🤔🤔
Is this using the latest Dji Fly App that was released a few days ago?
Yes
