It’s a satelite positioning system and “locks it in….MEMORIZES IT Ross. Part of the GNSS built-in to the drone. It takes a ‘position reading’ and just comes back to THAT place. COOL tests. Edited to add: My A2S is almost perfect in RTH positioning/landing every time..within 2-3 inches. 16-18 satellitesMIGHT make a difference, the more the better certainly.
It would be interesting to change the return to home from the take-off location , to the controller having moved to a different location.
i thought RTH only used GPS and then only visual to determine safe to land no obstacle. Is that wrong? it uses the visual to? because my drones never land in the same place. Close but not the same. I usually take off from the driveway where 4 pieces of concrete come together with a black seam so when it returns it should be able to distinguish that but it's off by a couple feet every landing.
The concrete may be the issue!
It did lift both for a few inches anyway, impressive. $4000.00 +- in the air at the same time lol
great tests Russ luv my one r camera but insta 360 screwed me with smo 4k camera on first use power plug on camera came out never even get to use they charge me 37 canadian $ ship back then 21usd fix and 21usd ship back then had pay 25 canadian for duty this was a new 300 dollar camera this was couple months ago and its now sitting in its box brand new never used so customer service is not good and left a bad taste in my mouth

I like the impromptu, informal style over a scripted format. Real world, real time videos is one of the things that drew me to your channel long ago and why I'm still here. Great review. I was actually surprised the M3 was able to lift the MP2. It can probably handle about 2 pounds (similar to a P3). As always, thanks for sharing another great video.

Nice tests. About precision landing You need to take off and stand for two seconds at 7 meter above home point.
Set her (Air 2S) down camera first, nice, not just once, but twice. I think I would put all gimbal guards on first. You should lift the M3 with the Air 2S. Maybe it uses Lat Lon coordinates.
I know this comment comes 2.5 years late, but you can buy USB cables that had a digital display on them that shows how much wattage is being pulled thru the cable. On my Air 3, I can charge the battery on the drone or on the 3-battery charger at the exact same speed cause they both pull 99 watts (presumably 100 watts cause the digital display only has 2 digit readout).
Lifting that much isn’t bad for a Mavic. I have a drone that will lift two of each of those. I bet my 6s 10,000mah battery alone weighs more than both of those Mavics. 😂

I know you probably know by now but there are USB 65w Mavic 3 battery chargers that charge at the exact same rate as the hub but are individual which means with a 240w charger that I purchased for laptops and iPads can charge all 3 batteries at the same time in 90 mins from dead flat, the beauty of that is I have a field charger with 3x 24V DC 100watt to PD / QC3 power supplies that go into each USB Charger and while I am out and about I get to fly non stop if I choose to do so. In actual fact my setup is a lot more elaborate than that but I don’t want to scare everyone with the size of things like my 6S 20AH lipo etc. I don’t like sequential charging because I use the drones for work too, not just recreational, so I can’t afford to be at a clients site saying I just need another hour to charge. I have the same for the air 2S and the mini 3 pro 3 chargers each all maximum rate all usb c / pd.
I guess it comes down to do you need that ability or not, 90% of the users will not because it’s costly to set it up.

Marvellous video - So I bought a custom mount - installed it - mounted my insta 360 x2 - just like you - a little wobble when it took off - 200 metres away all sats gone and then Atti mode - which is cool because I like atti mode and miss it 😃- landed - took the contraption off - boom 24 sats - moral of the story - don’t put it on if you can’t fly in atti mode

In order to have the fast charging times, you have to charge the battery inside the drone with the USB-C cable and your 100W fast charger.

This is why i love your videos, you will do dumb things with expensive equipment that I would never dream of putting my drones into a situation that may cause undue harm to them.
Could the 360 work better if it were hung on a wire from below? this might remove the drone movement from the 360 footage, and GPS loss.
Your experiment on the fast charger was based on incorrect information.
Mavic 3 battery support USB PD protocol for up to 65W, and PPS fast charging protocol up to 88W.
DJI's stock charger charges Mavic 3 battery at 65W, via USB PD protocol. And it takes 96 minutes to fully charge one battery.
Most of the 100W chargers on the market are based on USB PD protocol, that's why you don't see a reduced charging time with those 100W charger.
To enable the fast charging, you need to find a charger supporting 88W PPS fast charging protocol, and there are relatively few options available right now.
This is a (short) list of chargers verified to fast charge Mavic 3 battery, and where you can find them for purchase:
Wall charger:
- Wotobeus 130W USB-C GaN wall charger (Amazon)
- Baseus 100W GaN II Fast Charger (Amazon)
- Baseus 120W GaN charger (aliexpress)
Car charger:
- Wotobeus 120W USB-C charger (Amazon)
- Baseus 160W car charger (aliexpress)
Scripted or not it's unique content that makes your channel appealing to me. I like both formats. Interesting thing about strapping stuff on top of your drone, I've had compass errors and gps signal loss just from putting a strobe atop my Air 2s with the velcro near the front. Also, something a bit alarming the sticky side of the velcro where it attaches to the drone fell off very easily. Losing a strobe might not be the end of the world but if the strobe somehow hit a propeller that could be real bad. I recently got the 3d printed clip that mounts the strobe above the battery and clips over the release buttons (had to file it a bit) and haven't had problems since. I'm really surprised DJI hasn't built in strobes or provisioned for them in a way and sold something as an accessory. Relying on home made parts seems crazy for such a high tech item.
Agreed. The ‘tech’ is coming. With ALL the Regs we’re looking at now..something tells me we’ve JUST met “the iceberg”. It can (WILL) only get ‘worse’ from here. Edited: Of course I’m meaning the tech AVAILABLE. In comparison, the FAA is JUST getting started in this drone field and there’s bound to be more Regs as they never ‘loosen’ them once they get a foothold (I’m NOT saying all Regs are bad either though..there’s a fine line between TOO MANY vs enough).

@@m118lr i agree that regs aren't always a bad thing but part of the problem much like guns regs is you simply can't' stop stupid people from doing dangerous things. Here's an example, I went to a jazz festival over the summer, someone was flying their drone right over the heads of 1000's of people attending, no prop guards either. On the other hand I get aggravated when I'm unlucky enough to encounter a DJI geofenced zone where I can legally and safely fly my drone but have to go through the unlocking process because DJI is trying to make the hobby safer by marking off areas with potential hazards. I would be in favor of mandatory classroom and a test for ALL drone pilots, similar to what I did for hunting and also boating.

Have not flown a Mavic, since the original one, which was stolen(long story).
I love flying drones and the only one I have now is my original Spark.....lol! Now, being a retiree, definitely can't afford any of these great new drones, but would love to have one or two.

That’s pretty cool. Can you upload the 360 video also? I’d like to see the actual 360 video so I can play it in my oculus. We’ve done this a couple times with my cousin’s One X on my Mavic 2 pro. Though, when we mounted it on top like you did the drone had not satellite signal at all so I couldn’t fly more than 20’ high.
We had to tether the camera under the drone with a rope.
I liked that style of video. It was kind of off-the-wall and fun.

Thank you! I’ve been wondering if a drone can lift another for the soul purpose of Rescuing another drone that may have crashed or forced landed. Maybe you could figure out a gaffing hook that can safely catch on to the drone and lift it without dropping it till it lands safely? Thanks 😊
If there was some way to mount the 360 camera underneath the drone, then you'd get the view you want without seeing the drone, unless you want to look up of course. But how would you take off or land in that configuration? I'm sure some creative pilots out there can figure that out. :)

I kinda like the unscripted content, but that's just me. After your last weight lifting video I decided to try out my mavic 2, but with my nephew flying. He wasn't aware of me doing it so double the fun.
That thing has some pull! I just grabbed it with my hand and it wanted to take off.
He really didn't like the second time, I flipped it over and he thought he crashed it. The look on his face was priceless.

I was all ready to buy the OneX2 and battery bundle when they released it on their site.
I balked when the resolution was NOT 4K (and they for months never had additional batteries)
As a contractor it would have / will fit right in for my work flow.

Hey Russ when I flew my M2P with gopro 7 black the it would not load satellite signal but with the osmo action from DJI it flew fine.
That is a worry, if you take off from a boat & easily that boat under influence of wind & currents can move. The drone could land in the water, Russ.
Interesting tests. Cool shots of a camera mounted on top but the snow at the end... brrrr. not ready for that yet. I am about an hour north of Pittsburgh. We have had a couple dustings of snow but nothing that lasted more than a day.
What mount are you using for the 360 cam on top? Looks like adhesive and plastic? Didn't see it on the Insta site.

Using a drone with a 360 cam on it is really interesting. Not something I considered doing. Definitely looking at 360 cams now to add on
For 360-video always mount the 360-cam under the drone and not above. Better to clone out the drone in the zenith (top) area.

Well done, Russ! I put the Insta360 on my Mavic Air 2 this last spring and though it struggled noticeably, it still worked and added a world of creative options.
Hanging the drone from below is best as it doesn't affect the GPS, with the proper attachment device.
It's a fascinating series of tests! Good thing the Mavic 3 did great because it's gonna be hard to see the M2P and Air 2S crashing down the concrete!

The amount of lift will vary with density altitude, which varies with temperature and altitude.

That was the dumbest thing I have ever seen! Now that I have fulfilled your prophecy, I will say that you are among my 3 favorite drone channels, with the Originaldobo, and Captain Drone being the other two as you are all unique but pros. (I consider Pilot Institute to be a different animal than the rest of you.)
If I get entertained while also being informed and educated, then I consider it a very good channel. I like that you are professional but also willing to try odd or unconventional things and willing to admit when you mess up so that we can try to avoid the error. I like the desk, however maybe the field operational demonstrations are the best.

Does the Insta360 x2 have the range to take photos while hovering 100 to 200 feet?
I saw another "Tuber" and he placed same Insta on his mavic2 pro, so I bought an insta for that purpose. I think he was placing camera below mavic instead of above to prevent interference. He found a 1/4 20 mount of some kind. Im guessing he is having to hand catch drone for landing. I cant wait to try it out.

Interesting test. Note that FPV drones have been doing 360 cameras for some time now. Nothing new except maybe for photography drones.

Couple of questions Russ, The M3 and RC Pro used up all my play money from last year and the coming year... I have a Hero 9, don't have a scale, do you think the M3 will lift it if I Velcro or tape it on? If not, do you know of a small camera that I can buy for cheap? I have seen other photos from a camera riding a drone and really like them, but don't require high quality as I fly for fun and to show off for my kids and grandkids who think a phone is a great camera.
It will lift it easily! Hard part is mounting it.

Also, picked up a strong rumor today, DJI will soon be offering a new Fly More Combo with the RC Pro included instead of the rerun controller. It will be available in early first quarter '22 for North America, with possibly some form of rebate for the ones of us who purchased the RC Pro separately...

Awesome tests Russ! I also tested the mavic air 2 to see if it would lift a 700 gram fpv drone for possible rescue. It barely would lift it without a gopro so I knew I would need another option so I'm building a 7 inch rescue drone for that otherwise seems the Mavic 3 is a great option if you have the money to spend 😉

hmm.. i do like the drone, but i don't buy lifting thing that much. i've seen other video doing this /same way you did it last time with weights tc) and it could not lift and sustain the height with lifting own weight. i would say around air 2 weight (700g or so) is max for that.
maybe that's why you add sponsored to the title. i know its clickbating thing for us suckers, bur still..

@@51Drones just observation from another test, as i mentioned. if your test is legit, than i guess other one was done in different conditions, have depleted battery or something. would help my scepticism if we can see all drones in the frame a bit, probably..
