I shot her point blank in the back of the head and she screamed like i never heard a dog scream. I had to empty the magazine into her. It's one of the worst experiences of my life. After that i have used hyper ammo. If I had used it on her instead of the ball ammo she would have died instantly and not screamed. I bought a Taurus because I didn't want to spend $400-500 on my first pistol. Had I been willing to spend more, I would've bought an FN FNS 9. What a great presentation. I couldn't agree more with point 7. I've preached that for years. RIP, in particular, is horrible ammunition in more than one way. I would also like to mention that while you may be criminally absolved of any wrong doing, you still potentially face civil action. Look at OJ Simpson as an example. Try explaining to a jury in a civil case why you used RIP ammo. You can still be found guilty of wrongful death or even murder in a civil case and thus financially wrecked for life. I would argue civil cases are far worse to endure with the exception that if found guilty you're only facing financial ruin and not the death penalty or life behind bars being Bubb's girlfriend for 40 years.
    I've also witnessed, first hand, the "precious" syndrome many times. Please keep these videos coming. Your presentation style is so palatable that 30 minutes seems like 10.

    Been binge watching your videos since I discovered the channel. I really, really like how you present points. Eloquence and logic, you don't come across as talking down to people. You're a natural educator with a touch of humor to keep it fresh.
    Regarding fancy ammo, personally I just carry "basic AF" Remington green/white box .40 S&W 180gr JHP. It goes where I point it and puts holes in things, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg so I have no problems cycling out a magazine of it every time I go to the range; thus my carry ammo is always super fresh, too.

      It is funny but a valid point. Back when I only carried factory ammunition I would rarely fire up to a magazine of my carry ammunition to make sure it functioned and hit to the same POI as my practical ammunition. Well I got disappointed because I never did find that cartridge with that bullet weight in that specific load again and it became too precious to shoot up. By then my confidence in my own handloads had gone up and I switched to carrying my own, which in today’s artificially panic stricken society is the only ammunition I can get in any of 4 Pistol calibers I can carry. I do like a lead ball worked up to tightest group I can get from it.

    • @davidbrady1250
      @davidbrady1250 3 года назад +4

      @@308dad8 I never got into reloading. All the shooters in my area do, but all they care about is saving money on brass with no regard for any precision down range. I could see the appeal of learning to make match-grade precision ammo.
      As far as POI, agreed--when I started out a decade ago, I kept having instructors tell me "practice ammo has the same POI, don't waste your carry ammo at the range." For a novice shooter like me, Paul might have phrased it as "with the groups you're shooting, it won't make enough of a difference to make a difference." But I tend to think a lot like Paul about certain things, however, and I won't carry anything I haven't tested until I can trust it. Only after I went through a couple boxes of carry ammo side by side with my practice ammo was I comfortable believing the POI of my practice ammo. I still run a few carry rounds every range trip just to cycle through my storage about annually. (Well, I used to do that. Then 2020 arrived and now ALL bullets are buscadero ticawwwwwndas, and I don't wanna waste 'em. :-D )
      That said, my original comment was just that I could listen to Paul tell silly range stories all day. He could not, in fact, bore me--let alone to tears. :)

    I love these very types of videos from Paul. I'm slowly digging back through the older videos, and there is so much to learn from them. I know you apologize for just talking, but I don't mind. I love the way you present things, and from one teacher to another, you do a great job. I wish you didn't feel the need to apologize for the way you do things, but I understand the nature of RUclips and internet content. I have never been disappointed at the content you produce and always look forward to your videos.

      Shootingthebull410 does an entire series called “ammo quest” specifically covering this topic in exhaustive depth. The series is 7-8yrs old but still very relevant information and relevant types tested. All from a 3” barrel. I’ll spoil the ending and let you know that anything with HST was a rockstar performer. The final two were HST 124gr standard pressure and that was slightly edged out by a 147gr something something something. Can’t remember because none of my local stores carried it. I think it was the 147gr Winchester Defend PDX1 or something like that. I’m trying to recall what it was without going to watch the episode again. It’s in the “wrap up” video of the series. That said, I settled on the 124gr HST because it’s readily available at ALL of my local shops and big box outdoors shops so I can train with it and buy new rounds when it comes time to rotate my ammo out. It performs well through every test-medium I’ve seen it shot through. It always expands and hits 12-18” in the tests I’ve personally seen and watched here on RUclips.

    Just another excellent, well prepped and cogent presentation from this guy. I'm a Marine from back in the days of the Southeast Asian war games, plus a 20-year badge here on the east coast. I like to think that I know the difference between BS and the real thing, and Paul Harrell is the real thing. I've known how to shoot and handle firearms all my life. Then, a few years ago I went to Front Sight in the Nevada desert to really learn how to handle a firearm. These days, when I want to learn something regarding a particular or specific subject matter, such as this one about hyper ammo, I just look for Paul's presentation on it. He's well-learned, well-spoken, acknowledges counter-points while sticking to his point, and delivers the information in a manner that holds the listener's attention. All of those things about him will keep me coming back.

    Paul, you are correct. There are certain hyper ammo’s that I specifically buy for specific purposes, specifically gas checked hardcast flat nose ammo for woods carry in my .40 s&w due to superior penetration to a hollow point. But when it comes to standard HD ammo, I buy the standard 50 round Winchester white box 180 grain JHP’s, they expand just as good as any hyper hollow point and penetrate reliably, they never jam, and cost the same for 50 as the hyper ammo does for 20. And if I’m at the range practicing, I buy inexpensive FMJ’s.

  • @clv603
    @clv603 2 года назад +11

    6:47 most underrated point ever. If one thing can be said about run-of-the-mill FMJ/practice ammo, for the most part they all cycle pretty consistently. Even the "bottom shelf" stuff. I can't believe it took me this long to find Paul's content. Video from 2018, +1 subscriber.

    Hi Paul, I just wanted to thank you for all of your presentations. I love your no non sense approach to any subject you cover. One of my favorites is this hyper ammo presentation, All of your points are well taken. From the many videos I see where you have compared ammo, I find your baseline ammo others are tested against is the Remington green and white box 115 grain JHP and the results from accuracy and meat target are what I wanted. Plus I can target shoot and feel confident in a self defense situation more comfortably. They seem to shoot the best in my gun comparing to other hyper ammo and different weight bullets. Thank you for all you do for the gun and community!
    Jeff

    The only defensive ammo I will use in my carry gun is Hirtenberger Buscadero Ticondas. Though, since my carry gun is a Singer 1911, it’s really too valuable to carry. I prefer to keep it locked up in my safe. Of course, since my safe is an antique Mosler Firejacket Cannonball safe, I have it buried in the backyard. Under concrete.

Many of the points you raised could help us through a criminal action should we are forced, to defend ourselves or others, to draw our weapon, or worse yet, shoot someone. Stressing that we could train and practice with our carry ammo is spot on. Thanks again for being the voice of common sense and wisdom based on your experience and training.
