  • Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreter | Alaska Summit 2021
Zhang Jing stole the show at the high-level talks between the US and Chinese delegates on Mar 18, where she interpreted Yang Jiechi’s 17-minute opening speech into English exceptionally well. Chinese media reports referred to her as “China’s Most Beautiful Interpreter”. Her name has become one of the most popular searches on the social media platform Weibo.
Although the US and China officials had exchanged criticisms and accusations during the opening speeches, the 2-day Summit ended with agreements on combating climate change as well as regional stability. But according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the two countries still "have fundamental conflicts" over Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Tibet, Taiwan, and cyberspace.

This interpreter is a class of her own. Fluent, precise and clear. Every word delivered was exactly what was said in Chinese by Yang. And for 17 minutes. That is fantastic. Keep up the good word. I never envisage the day a Chinese interpreter took the show to show the world what its people are made of, same like the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing summer Olympic.

Did the interpreter tone down the bit about blacks dying in America? Apparently Yang used the Chinese word for "slaughtered" when referring to the killings of black people in the U.S. but I didn't hear the interpreter use that word.

I checked the video footage: Yang Jiechi spoke for 16:22 min. without break, at the end of which he turned to Wang Yi for a few seconds, then said to interpreter not to interpret it as it was too long to do it, and Blinken said to give her a raise causing a bit of laughter. Then Zhang Jing the interpreter said she would give it a go, and she started at 16:47 min. and finished at 30:47 min. - exactly 14 minutes in perfect, clear English - an absolutely stunning performance! It was an accurate interpretation because she wrote down her own notes as she listened to Yang's opening remarks.

    Let's do this way:
    What is
the percentage of American speak Chinese in their population Vs
the percentage of Chinese speak English in China ------------------- >
Chinese people much understand Americans than Americans understand Chinese.
So you can tell, Americans must try to learn about Chinese to improve our relationship.

America's interpreter didn't have any accent when she spoke chinese. So she should be a native chinese language speaker. Her problem is that she couldn't translate precisely and smoothly.

    • @dsun1263

Seriously? Her speech is not smooth, which is a big NO NO as a professional translator. Besides she could not translate accurately. She should take public speech lesson first. Then a course on translation, not interpretation. I gave her an F. BTW I majored in languages and speak Chinese, English and German.

Looking at the social scenarios in both US and China, one must just wonder as to why US leaders bother to criticize the social fabrics of China when so many people in the greatest society suffer without basic shelter and a decent meal. Just because you do not agree with the way their political leadership is being promoted/elected? With US resources and a correct approach, we all agree US can progress but with the current approach, there is doubt this could be achieved. Conflicts always waste plenty of energy of all nations with their peoples trapped in the consequences of such conflicts. Why?
