Another Aussie here and I’ve spent the better part of 20 years living in China. Let’s put it this way. Whatever is shown in Australian media about China is very twisted and skewed. Dare I say - in many instances bordering on blatant lies.
Western media (inc. Australia) has been propagating negative news about China for a long time. Unfortunately, many people solely depend on such news for info as they have not travelled to see for themselves. Some are shackled by financial reasons, while others due to ignorance.
Mate, I'm an Aussie as well, and I went to China a few years ago. You are 100% correct. China is NOT like we've been told back home. People really need to visit China to see the true China. I was pleasantly surprise at how advanced and futuristic China is. I also went to USA. USA does NOT compare to China. I felt safe in China (and I'm a White Aussie male). I did NOT feel safe in USA.
@@User-mf3pe I learnt a few Mandarin words ... not much (gratuities, salutes, 'destination' words, and 'want' words). But I got around with English. Many of the younger generation spoke English, so it was easy to find help. Plus you've got Bing (Microsoft) Translator. Google is banned in Government building due to their Data Storages being housed all over the world in different countries. Microsoft is used, because Microsoft build Data Storages ... in China only, for China. Actually, Microsoft does the same thing for our Australia Government. However, outside of Government buildings (like in Australia) people use what they want, even Google. The most popular Search Site in China is Baidu, and you can use Baidu Translate (they have their own Internet Satellite Constellation, all over the world, faster and better). But, you can get around China with English. Everywhere I went, they had the Mandarin Signages coupled with English, and in specific Provinces, they had the signages in Mandarin, Local Province Language and English. In China, everybody I met were extremely friendly and accommodating. You must go to China (oh, I believe you can buy from Amazon, a dedicated Translator device ... but you'll have to sync it with their Satellite Constellation. Buy the device in China (I never got one, because I didn't think of it at the time ... but next time, I'll get one).
@@User-mf3pemost chinese people from 18 to 30 have learned english for 10 years .As long as u use some simple words to communicate, they can understand and reply. for daily issues like order food and ask for direction, english is enough for you
China isn't our enemy, our enemy is ignorance. Exploring their culture is a way for us to understand what our commonalities are instead of focusing on our differences. This issue won't be resolved overnight but it is actions like this that bring it closer to becoming reality. We share the planet and we need to learn how to do it peacefully as co-citizens.
China is a great country, it has a long history and delicious food."You will definitely feel extremely shocked when you go to China."If you could ever go to China, please make sure to visit there. It's truly wonderful.""I have been living in China for ten years."
My first trip to China was 17 years ago. A total culture shock. I’ve been brainwashed in the states thru media and government propaganda. Chinese people are the best. They’re so helpful and just plain nice. Almost exact opposite of what I have been coached to believe regarding China.
Maybe you haven't deeply integrated into Chinese society. How to be locked at home during COVID-19 and unable to express your opinion. If you make negative remarks about the Chinese government, it will affect whether future generations can enter government agencies and state-owned units. In addition, China itself is very good at surface engineering. The good side of Chinese people does not mean that they have not received patriotic education to hate other countries. Reduce online speech attacks on the West.
@@elfin1601 didnt really understand what you are trying to say here but there are always two sides to things. quarantine might have caused inconveniences but it did effectively and efficiently stop the spread of the virus. and EVERY country literally has this so called patriotic education - simply put: why would you not like you own country? - and there's always the freedom to move or immigrate.
@@elfin1601 tf are you even saying? Most Chinese people are busy living their own lives, not every person has the time to hate another country like you lmao
Glad that someone pushed out of Western propaganda and visited China. I am from Indonesia and have been going to China for business or leisure since 2004, every single time I visit, China has grown, there is a new building, a new line on the subway, etc., and it's the safest place I've been to in my travels to about 300 cities in 30 countries.

@@josieliftsthings Well, for ur own sake, things should always go this well ala u do not question or mention politics or history as a tourist in China, and don't expect the land-locked areas being even as good-moraled as Shanghai (in fact many Chinese people from land-locked areas openly post hate speech towards Shanghaiers even on Twitter, some even going as extreme as demanding of massacre and human trafficking & enslavement...partly for some Shanghaiers discrimminate against them, but partly just because they view the Shanghaish civillizedness and open-mindedness as abnormal, if not traitous) ... Chinese people usually tend to nicely treat foreign tourists as "guests" though they are just passer-bys to them, but the majority of them would show their sensitive super both imperial and national inner side if triggered by "the alien", just as what "western media" says, if not worse.
I've visited China four times and saw different regions. Every time I've visited... I've seen big improvements. I would even be bold enough to say that the major cities in China are now overall cleaner looking than the major cities in the US.For one example, I've visited public parks in Shanghai and was amazed at how clean they look. No litter or graffiti anywhere... even the skateboard rink looks clean. And there are lots of people out there enjoying the parks... but seem to have respect for the facilities there. The greening of the city is very good, and there are many electric cars on the street, which proves that the Chinese government attaches great importance to environmental protection. What impresses me the most is that life is very convenient, a cashless society, the subway system is very new and clean, and the people are very friendly.Other than some culture shock, I feel China is very safe. You can also go out late at night. China's technological level is beyond my imagination. I feel that the future is in China..But In the US, I dare not go out at night, for fear that black people will shoot me. have fun in China and God bless you.🤲🤝❤

The core difference between China and Western countries actually lies in the relationship between the individual and the collective. Western countries place more emphasis on individual interests, while China is the opposite. A typical example is the street cameras. In the eyes of Western media, this is the best evidence of China's invasion of personal privacy, but for the majority of Chinese people, it represents public safety. The fact is that China is almost the safest country in the world, not only in Shanghai and Beijing these metropolises, but almost the entire China, even in remote rural areas. You don't need to worry about personal safety or property safety. So no Chinese person would object to street cameras. Compared with privacy, ordinary people care more that you and your children can travel safely at midnight, and your car parked on the side of the road will not be stolen. Another extreme example on the contrary is the issue of guns in the United States, so no one would say that the United States is a safe country. The scariest day of my life was at 9 p.m. on February 2019, when I was walking with my wife in the downtown of San Diego. It could only be described as a real-life "The Walking Dead".
@@story-time-j6k There are There are pros and cons, but this is actually very subjective. If you are used to it, this is actually a way to protect security. If you are very personal, then this will also be an invasion of personal privacy.
@@1C12YANCHIQIU1C1殷子翹 Another reson why Chinese people don't think street cameras as a threat is: most of them have witness the improvement of social security since the TianWang System launched. For example, one of my friend lost his bicycle recently, and he came to the police station to ask for moniter video, and within 3 hours he got his bicycle back. By the way, almost all people in Chine believe that the government especially the police could protect their personal privacy.
when I was a child I had always wanted to go to China. Maybe it was the Pandas or clothing I dont really remember why I was so fascinated, but as I got older I guess politics started to cloud my judgment but this video has once again made me have the feeling of wanting to visit.
Mate as another Aussie it's amazing to see how misleading Western media has been. We've been completely brainwashed into thinking China is some backwards cheap toy manufacturing country that abuses anything and everything. I remember touching down in Shanghai and being absolutely blown away by how advanced China is. Same couldn't be said about New York and San Francisco when I visited. I was blown away by how dirty those cities were and the shocking amount of homeless people. Keep up the good work!
Western media reports on China are full of lies and mislead Western readers, especially lies to smear the Chinese government for committing genocide in Xinjiang. In fact, the Chinese government has actually given preferential policies to ethnic minorities beyond the national level, and has a policy of extra points in the college entrance examination for ethnic minorities. People with lower scores than Han people can get into top universities. Even if they commit crimes, ethnic minorities receive lighter sentences than Han people. The Chinese government also allocates funds to support minority areas every year. Xinjiang's population growth rate is the fastest in the country.
im a chinese and now studying in Melbourne, Australia. When I watched this video I was shocked. Maybe we are all lost in this Internet-developed world and cannot see the true face of things, but I am glad that someone is willing to come China and experience Chinese culture : )
I am a Chinese who has lived in Australia for 11 years. My hometown is Shanghai. I am very happy to see more and more Aussie coming to China. For me, Melbourne and Shanghai are both my home now.
Living in China has opened my eyes to the beauty of its culture and the warmth of its people. It's important to not judge a country based on stereotypes, but to embrace the diversity and unique experiences it offers.
By having a variety of sources, including personal experiences, we can gain a deeper understanding of China and its people. This helps to challenge our preconceived notions and allows us to see the country in a more balanced light. It's crucial to approach information with an open mind and seek out diverse perspectives to form a more informed opinion.
Experiencing China firsthand has given me a more nuanced and multi-faceted view of the country that goes beyond the stereotypes often perpetuated by the media. It's important to approach cultural understanding with an open mind and a willingness to learn from diverse perspectives.
America's perception of China makes it seem so scary and like the people there are sad and have no freedom. I'm so happy to see this video. Thank you very much for sharing the real side of China to the world.
I just visited Venice Beach, walked the Walk of Fame, saw a Basketball game at Crypto and walked away thinking I know America. Kind of arrogant and stupid isn't it. Do study the CCP history a bit, undestand what houkou is and go visit a few places, especially inland villages and most importantly do understand that people if they have grivances aren't allowed to assembled for long before they are either threaten or squashed like Tianamen Square massecre, or if you practice religion they don't like, they harvest your organs for CCP officials,or teenagers disappear with organs missing.......

Americans think that the Chinese use bicycles and still do as they did in the 90s. Westerners laughed and small talked over the coffee and tea table that the Chinese don't have enough money for cars, so they only have bicycles. The BBC was always active the channel that broadcast Beijing's mass cycling to Western audiences in the 90s and 2000s.

No need to go to China to support the evil dictatorship. Can you live without free Internet, RUclips, Google etc. Can you live without any privacy under monitoring? If yes, welcome to China!
In my experience, you don’t need to be worried about safety in China - I lived there for some time and never felt unsafe at any hour of the day. Petty theft (like cameras, phones) does happen though, like anywhere else.
The most critical problem is that in China, a person may lose himself, but it is impossible to lose his mobile phone, because the mobile phone is needed at any time and there is no chance of being put down, including when going to the toilet.
I left my cell phone in a restaurant while traveling in Shanghai, and I got it back a day later because a restaurant customer found it and gave it to the waiter.

This is such a beautiful video. The main take-away from this is that one should go out of their comfort zone and visit the places and meet the people before forming an opinion about a country and its people. More Americans, especially, should do that.

Thank you so much Josie for sharing this video on RUclips. To be honest with everyone, I grown up in China before I moved to Australia. In our education in China there has always been good things in our study about foreign counties. We were told to learn the good things from foreign countries. Nothing bad. Until I came overseas I got so confused why the media advertised so much bad things of China. Especially on something that pretty much other countries did the same too but then only the same that was done by Chinese would get badly advertised. A lot of things were twisted and people believed the media that’s what frustrated Chinese. What’s worse is its very hard for Chinese to find a way at oversea that they could speak up for themselves as no one would believe how China is from outside of China. At the end people were wondering why Chinese people gets aggressive easily as they have been misunderstood for too long. I’m so touched when seeing posts and videos like this. Normal and real, nothing twisted. Thank you!

Thank you so much for coming to visit China. As a proud Chinese, I constantly saw biased reports about China, but plain persuasion seems so powerless. The only way to justify what China really feels like, is to come and visit! You will enjoy it =)

In minute 10:45, the men in the park were playing Chinese Chess: Xiangqi (pronounced “shiang-chee”) has been played for hundreds of years and is today still one of the most popular board games in the world, played in China and across Asia, and recently, in the West as well.
It's not hundreds of years old. It's actually over 2,000 years old. Chinese Chess has been played since the Warring States period and is older than Western Chess, which is around 1,500 years old.
@@josieliftsthings Yeah, I played this game as a kid and also played western chess as a kid. Both games are very similar, but there's a river on a Chinese chess board and a few pieces are animals that are either homonyms for officers are represents officers. For example, the piece elephant is similar sounding to minister in Chinese. The piece horse represents a knight. I've forgotten how to play Chinese chess and western chess for the most part now. Both have rules to follow for each piece. Anyways, your husband calling Chinese chess mahjong was kind of funny cause mahjong is a 4 player game and much more complicated (but way more fun) and way more gambling involved in that game whereas Chinese Chess is just to kill time/have fun just like Western Chess. Rather it be western chess or Chinese chess, it's 2 armies going at each other.

Hope you have a wonderful experience in China! Due to political interests, many Western media have always been biased against China. China does have many shortcomings, but these shortcomings are not as terrible as reported by the Western media. I have many foreign friends, some of whom really want to come to China, and I would love to lead them to have new experiences across China. Most Chinese people are very friendly, China is huge, China's culture and society are very diverse and interesting, in different places in China you can find a combination of tradition and modernity, different foods, languages, religions, lifestyles, China's Nature is also beautiful. I am very happy that more and more people want to come to China and learn Chinese. This is the best way to understand a country and gain experience. I hope more people can visit or live in China and become friends with Chinese people. There are many political prejudices not only in China, but also in the world. Another Aussie here and I’ve spent the better part of 20 years living in China. Let’s put it this way. Whatever is shown in Australian media about China is very twisted and skewed. Dare I say - in many instances bordering on blatant lies.
Being an Aussie, can you explain why the governments of Anglo Saxon countries, including Australia, hate China and keep spreading rumors about China?
I would remove "bordering on".
Western media (inc. Australia) has been propagating negative news about China for a long time. Unfortunately, many people solely depend on such news for info as they have not travelled to see for themselves. Some are shackled by financial reasons, while others due to ignorance.

As a Chinese person, it was so fun and endearing seeing you enjoy Chinese food! Thank you for approaching my country with an open mind.

I felt the same when I visited China nearly two decades ago. I was scared to go there even then but had to due to my studies as I was dying for first hand experience. My own Uni and the travel agent told me the same. My destination was ShenZhen, could have easily crossed from HK, but was scared as I was traveling alone, so I transited from Pudong, (hilarious) and the rest is history!!! You are not alone, hope you will enjoy very long stays there. You will be safe at ALL times, even in the middle of the night!!! During warmer days night is different as all the families and pets come out to stay out and enjoy life where we live in heavily locked houses almost all day.
The situation wasn't the same 20 years ago.

Thank you!

In minute 10:45, the men in the park were playing Chinese Chess: Xiangqi (pronounced “shiang-chee”) has been played for hundreds of years and is today still one of the most popular board games in the world, played in China and across Asia, and recently, in the West as well.
That’s so crazy I’ve literally never seen it before. How cool to learn and see something new 😁☺️☺️
It's not hundreds of years old.
