08:02 At the time i visited Shanghai (1998) the Pearl Tower was already there, but not the around 600m tall building, But even then the skyline looks very familiar to me. I personalöly like Shanghai a lot more than Beijing, even it has more places of interest, but the atmosphere (young paople may call it: vibe) in Shanghai is better

China is a vast and diverse country, and there are imperceptible differences in culture, food, language, climate, etc. in various places. They have fast-moving, buzzing modern cities like Shanghai, but also places full of natural beauties like Guilin, or ancient imperial capitals with numerous historical relics like Xi-An. It's impossible to get a sense of what China is really like from a 20-minute clip.

China has already surpassed Singapore with their own technology and development. They are very clever to nurture their own people and not give their IT industry away. China is a great nation with plenty of resources and ability to develop far far greater in terms of their own technology than little SG.

The reason why Shanghai doesn't feel like a megacity is because it's built under a different philosophy than NYC or Tokyo. In Shanghai we have very high density residential complexes, which in terms allows the non-residential areas to be more open. Also, a big signature of Chinese cities is that we do our best to make sure every street has trees, no matter how downtown it is. As a Shanghainess myself I'm a bit sad how underrepresented our kind of megacities are in pop cultures, since, in my humble opinion, it's a better kind of cities.

I find Hong Kong, Tokyo, Taipei and Chongqing more interesting and charming, with the narrow streets, old buildings and streets designed for people, not for cars.

Shanghai metro is a way bigger than Tokyo or NYC in term of area. If you talk about population, 1/3 of Japanese population lives in Tokyo metro, is that a good thing for a country........ Tokyo and NYC are more famous than Shanghai to Westerners is simply because what happened in last 100 years and because the dominance of the US, and its allies in term of economy, military, and overall influence......As someone who lived in NYC and moved to TX, I can say the NYC is a mess, really messy.....

It is quiet in Chinese cities compared to SEA cities because first of all China uses a lot of electric vehicles already, like e-bikes on every block, and secondly people use the subway and high-speed trains, so traffic is diversified while in SEA cities, vehicles are still using gasoline (noisy) and usually no sophisticated subway system like China.

That drink is called coconut milk(ye zhi in Chinese), which is a very popular drink in China. Children's favourite. Recently, I heard that the Chinese government has opened a 30-day visa-free entry policy for Germany. I hope you can visit more attractions and cities next time. China has a long cultural and abundant historical heritage, as well as beautiful mountains and plateaus, which are definitely worth exploring more. I recommend Suzhou and Xi'an. In Suzhou, you can see the ancient graceful southern Chinese towns and gardens. Xi'an is the ancient capital of 13 dynasties in China, with a history of 3,000 years. There are many historical sites there. You will feel as if you have travelled back to ancient times, and the nearby Huashan Mountain is also worth visiting, with beautiful mountain scenery and dangerous cliffs. In addition, China's high-speed rail system is very developed. You can use Ctrips to book train tickets and get to any city in China.Anyway welcome you Ken😊

I remember Joseph from your travels and having him as your guide in Shanghai is a big plus. It does make things easier, isn't it as it gives a better (and quicker) "insight" to a new destination before you start venturing on your own.
It's fun hearing your "first impressions" as you get around and I'm looking forward to the continuation of your experiences.

Why does China prohibit the construction of buildings over 500 meters? Firstly, China already has too many tall buildings, with 51 out of the top 100 skyscrapers worldwide located in China. Secondly, there are safety concerns associated with such tall structures, posing significant challenges for firefighting and requiring substantial maintenance investments as they age. Thirdly, some buildings lack architectural design and can disrupt the city's skyline and aesthetic appeal.
