Since 15th century China already trade With Melaka. They never conquered us, only trade. BUT the west Portuguese, English and Dutch came with cannons to conquer us and said we belong to them. They each stayed for years.

Actually China has been trading with this region for thousands of years. If you are a history buff you will have to refer to the chinese records to know about this region historic past. Since Melaka was founded only in 1402, a chinese admiral, a trade envoy started to visit Melaka in 1403, a year after its establishment.
Once the Europeans managed to find their way to this region, they started to invade the kingdoms. Except for Siam, all kingdoms in south east asia were conquered by the Europeans.. portuguese, spanish, dutch, french, english, american for more than 400 hundred years.

Orville Schell is completely condescending when he speaks of China and Asia overall. He thinks with a 20th century mindset and is ill prepared for dealing with China in the 21st century. He is a caricature of the hot-headed American who acts before he thinks. A complete neocon who is overly confident of America's capabilities because our last wars have been victories against Iraq and Afghanistan. He should review America's massive failures in Asia during the Vietnam and Korean conflicts. I'm heartened to hear diplomats like Mr. Mahbubani who are much calmer and thoughtful in their speech. Thanks Kishore for telling the truth. However, you are still too polite towards the China haters. Most western people did not really understand why Taiwan became the most dangerous place on earth. They blamed Xi on the tension between Mainland and Taiwan. The fact is that Xi and President Ma met around 2015 when the two sides were really very friendly because both sides agreed to adopt the ambiguity of the 1992 one China Consensus. Unfortunately, when the pro-independent DPP got the power, DDP tore this agreement and started to change the textbook trying to remove any histories of Taiwan related to Mainland China. This is indeed the first move of chinging the Status Quo. The people in Mainland watched DPP using the huge surplus (U$150B/year) with Mainland China to buy weapons from USA. Is it a surprise that Chinese would be angry? In fact, if China holds a referendum about if they want to use force to bring Taiwan back, the overwhelming majority would vote for using the military force. If Chinese people elects the next leader. He will have no chice but starting the reunification by force immediately. So, Xi is actually trying to calm down the angry of his people. In fact, Xi and former president Ma of Taiwan may meet again in Beijing this coming week to promote the friendly gesture. The western media purposely ingored all these because they are trying to demonize China and Xi. In fact, the ruling party ,DPP, in Taiwan and the USA are to be blamed for causing the tension. This is similar to what the troublemaker USA is pushing the NATO expansion and Ukrainians to fight to death for the hegemony of the USA. USA would like Taiwan to become the 2nd Ukraine. As far as the tension in the South China Sea, the troublemaker of the newly elected philipine president Marcos is provoking China as he has been encouraged by the USA (Phillipine is the 3rd Ukraine). Marcus obeys the order from USA because his huge family fund (US$5-10b per Wikipedia) has been frozen by the USA. Japan is another watchdog for the USA. Japanese soldiers killed over 20 million chinese in WWII and they still tries to wipe the criminal hehavors from their history books. Japan is a criminal nation as they just release the contaminated water from the nuclear reactor accident to the pacific ocean. The USA has been silent because the USA wants Japan (4th Ukraine) to contain China. So, be very careful about what the Western media are trying to protray about China and Xi because 95% are lies.

@@TheVafa95 The analogy he shared about the planet being a ship and we being all passengers in different cabins is from his book, I think "The Great convergence" where he goes deeper into the great dilemmas humanity now face. The idea of putting our differences aside and ignoring our selfish tendencies as if we don't learn to work together we will end together. His other titles: "Has China Won" and the very short but profound and in my opinion prophetic "Has the West Lost it" are extremely good as they basically predicted the issues that we face today and his suggestions on how these issues could have been avoided. His books will be more interesting for people from the global south as we are better able to relate, but more difficult to accept by Westerners who hold on to a sense of entitlement and superiority.

@@Orwellian-Purple-Grapes-1984Marcos Sr died & Marcos Junior (current Philippines president) takes over.
When US court asked Marcos Jr to appear in court, somebody helped Marcos to return to Philippines, without appearing in court. Hence, US court issued a contempt order of US$353 million.
how much is Marcos Senior's estate
In Oct 2012, a US Court of Appeals upheld the judgment against Marcos for violating an injunction that barred Marcos Jr to dissipate the assets of the estate. USA has frozen US$2 billion.
Marcos Jr is selfish. For his own interest, he damages Philippines’ economy by losing trade with China. He put his country at risk in a China-USA war where Philippines will become a ruin like Ukraine.
They let the US bribe money fill their bellies and exchange of hell.

@@user-wi7it2mx6z If you listen intelligently, Kishore is putting the isolated or individual incidents given by the American professor as examples in context. You can then understand that he is putting things in perspective, or see the big picture. The American professor sees only the swallow and wonders, but the Singapore professor tells him spring is approaching. Kishore gave an excellent example of how democratic anti-communism American is cosying up with another communist country which violates American cardinal principles of individual freedom and human right. Hypocrisy? Orville is obviously trying to usurp the moderator's role instead of giving his own thoughts and analysis. That's not ethical or polite. The moderator did a good job, prompting Orville to come up with some ideas of his own instead of questions. May be he thought it was a debate which Kishore cleverly parried.
