Chalk me up as another happy MDR .308 owner. And frankly, I think the vast majority of negative "reviews" on this rifle are from people who adopted extremely early - GarandThumb and Inrange both had issues and InRange stuck around and actually helped improve the gun. They had early-rollout problems, which is really common. Props to the company for seeing it through and making the 2 parts they changed free retro-fits to existing customers. I've got the updated version with the wider extractor and the 6-position gas system (which you can adjust without removing the handguard, it's got a little cut-out in the end. Just put a long flathead screwdriver down from the muzzle-end and slot it in, adjust as needed, the window in the handguard is just to make it easier to see what setting you're on) - I have never had a malfunction. The closest thing to a malfunction I've had was when manually ejecting a live round - you have to charge the thing aggressively to get it to nudge the round into the ejection shute. So I baby-handed it and got a round lodged in the shute - simply re-racking it harder solved that. Definitely user error and has not happened again. I agree, it's a fantastic hunting rifle. I've taken several coyotes, at least a dozen porcupines, and 1 deer with mine. It's easy to walk through the woods with, store in a car, and lug around in general. It doesn't seem to care about cold weather either - I've hunted in snow and ~15 degrees with it and it didn't care. That's more down to intelligent lube selection though - I'm a big fan of Ballistol, it just never gums up. It's on the heavy side for a hunting rifle but with a good 2 point sling you dont notice it hiking around because it's just so compact. In addition to hunting there's another role I think the rifle fills really well - but only if outfitted with a longer barrel. It's a hell of a DMR, or a shorter range urban-type sniper. With my 20-inch (ES-Tactical, check them out, they do 6.5 creed barrels for it too!) barrel installed, plus the can, and a 1-8x PA Platinum Griffin optic, it's still under 10.5lbs, and at least a foot shorter than a comparable silenced .308 non-bullpup. Plus it balances exactly on the pistol grip. I'm getting phenominal accuracy with that aftermarket barrel and the compactness lets me carry a full length barrel, silenced semi-auto through the woods no problem at all. The 20 inch barrel makes the gun easily an 800m capable point target shooter, and not nearly as punishing without a can on the end. I think it fits that role a lot better than the role of battle rifle - mostly because I'm not sure a battle rifle has a place in modern combat. The M4 and its derivatives work just fine for close to mid range stuff with the 77gr pills, and longer range engagements are handled by the DM or an attached sniper team. Nobody seems to need a compact battle rifle. A compact DMR/SASS though....that idea has legs. I'm just some shmoe though, what do I know :) It's definitely my favorite semi-auto .308 - twice as accurate as any M1A I've shot (they all seem to be 2MOA guns no matter what you do to them), same weight, shorter, doesn't destroy brass like an AR-10, cleans like a big piston AR. And it puts all my brass in a nice little pile right in front of me for hand-loading. I did a trigger job on mine and it responded extremely well to that - it was the only part of the rifle I wasn't happy with out of the box. I'm sure any competent gunsmith could massage yours with even better results - I'm just some dude with a garage. Last note in case anyone actually reads this far - you can run the rifle without the ejection shute, if you got it gummed up with mud or sand or something. It pops off with a fingernail and with that removed, the rifle ejects at a 90 degree angle, just like any rifle, and you can still swap which side it ejects from. Very well designed system, IMO.
Grandthumb treated the gun like they advertised. The marketed the gun poorly And that’s gonna haunt them for a While. I don’t hunt and only use stuff for “tactical” mall ninja shooting.
I agree, the gun was marketed incorrectly or designed incorrectly for their intended application. This isn't going to be a military service rifle. It's accurate enough to be a great hunting rifle or range rifle. But even for a SHTF rifle, I would choose something else.
Garand Thumb is also an AR guy. I just don't see him (or MAC) promoting any bullpup as go-to-war rifles. With exception of the FAMAS (which are nearly impossible to get, all bullpups on the market now share the same flaw of being a closed system and are more difficult (than conventional military rifles) to clear when malfunctions occur. For civilian use, however, it's not that big of a deal.
Military Arms Channel and this is why I come to your channel. Never an ounce of bs. I’ve actually been using your content to push 300blk for the meth houses in my departments area so thanks for that video
Glad to see DT has “fixed” the rifle. I had 1 that would never fired more than 3 rounds without getting a stuck case. I eventually sold it because DT refused to fix the rifle. DT blamed all my malfunctions on the ammo even though that same ammo ran fine in all my other 308 rifles. I sold my rifle before a lot of other RUclips channels posted videos of their rifles doing the same thing. Once that happened DT had to do something and could not blame everything else for their rifles issues.
The Riddler this was a smart move. I had too much hope in mine and held it for way too long. Stuck cases were only 1/5th of the issues I had, so I feel your frustration. 3 trips back and DT refused to refund me after all of it...
I mean they pretty much did set the rifle on the right track, albeit it may take a bit longer for the rifle to get where it needs to be (which is a disappointment and a half). @@toddk1377 That was my hunting rifle for about 4 years+ I will say, I have my M1A set up for hunting suppressed, and it does kinda suck if you need to walk very far. Mine weighs 14.6 pounds with a loaded 10 round mag.
In my case the MDR was mostly reliable with commercial 308, but I never got through a single mag with anything 7.62 NATO without a failure. I just got mine back after sending it in (~3 months) for all the updates, and after 300 rounds of various military ammy, it's been flawless. And you can adjust the gas through the little window, you just need a small screwdriver ir stick, a flashlight, and a good set of eyes (or for me, reading glasses).
You had the port cover w/ scissor mechanism fly off too, just like mine did once! LOL Good stuff. Mine, however, did not feed another live round- it just left the spent brass hanging locked into the extractor. Thanks for your great vids! Love that you're honest with your experiences.

I had the chance to shoot one the other day (.308)....damn cool ass rifle. The owner was a leftie and had it left-side eject....crazy fast to switch it to right-side eject for me to shoot right handed.

I mean, it's pretty good. The malfunction in this video is pretty easy to explain though and makes a lot of sense. Just seems like the ejection arm plate didn't hold on to the upper securely.
I think it’s cool that they recognize that you have fans. Doesn’t surprise me that they bent over backwards for you. Then again most of these companies really care about their customers experience. Just not usually at the president of the company level lol. Nice long shot! Worse malfunction I ever had was a bolt shear during a looong firefight in Mosul in 2004. First and last time I ever saw it. Sometimes weird things happen. Then again I’ve also had a pop no kick in my long career as a shooter. Maybe it’s just me lmao.
that actually happened to me with an ar15 and an cheap surplus mag. as the spent case was ejecting, a round popped out of the mag and slammed the spent case up, stopped the ejection and threw the live round floating in the receiver
The only one I would consider is the Tavor 7. I have a pre-production one I'm testing but it has accuracy issues. They are resolving the accuracy issues. If they accomplish that, it will be the 308 bullpup to beat.
I have been asking this question for a while and have never been given an answer. Could you just leave the ejection port cover off the rifle, so that there wouldn't be an possible issue with brass hanging up and prevention ejection?
Yes, it works with the port cover off but it leave the rifle with a gapping hole. It works fine, but as you can see when I remove the port cover in the video to clear the malfunction there's a huge opening left.
@@Militaryarmschannel I know that you said that you've not experienced hardly any issues with the MDR as GarandThumb or others have had in their experiences, but do you think the port cover creates any liability in inducing an extraction malfunction?
MAC...have you tried or looked at DT’s new MDRX improvements? I’ve held off purchasing one of these for a while...but it looks like DT is making an honest and (hopefully) solid attempt to correct all of the problems that you and others have brought front and center. Thanks for the work you do in this forum.
Had the same type malfunction repeatedly on my old (A1) Styer AUG when I tried a new, longer barrel (20"). Had to do with the gassing. When I put the factory barrel (16" w detachable suppressor) back on it went back to normal, reliable operation. Though both barrels have the gas port in the same place, for some reason the non-suppressed 20" had the problem but the suppressed 16" did not. My guess- This type malfunction is basically a failure to eject because the bolt group doesn't go back far enough to fling the spend case out. It begins loading a new cartridge before the spent one is actually ejected. Take the suppressor off and it certainly will not happen; or just adjust the gas port to send more gas back to cycle the action. I guess it could be the opposite (is over-gassed) but that doesn't seem to make sense to me.
Some of the accuracy issues you are having may be because of it being a bullpup. Since the weight is more centralize it has a smaller moment of inertia, this means it is more sensitive to small movements. It is also rotating around an axis closer to your shoulder. Try resting the front of the gun closer to the end of the barrel and being extra careful to hold your shoulder still.
Steven there’s about 4-5 RUclips content creators who’ve used this rifle - all have demonstrated major failures in the 308. I’m eager to see how the 556 fairs.
Garand Thumb also had some issues but that's been well before the MDR came out with fixes. That being said, the new MDRs in .308 are pretty decent. InRangeTV's Karl ran it fine in 3-gun competitions
Okay I got Idea for fixing Gas adjust on this MDR Rifles. Need connect cabal all way trigger somewhere near trigger flick 6 direction 6 setting Gas pressure adjust.
The Golf Life ACSS. Primaryarms.com offers it on their scopes. Amazing reticle for shooting man-sizes targets. Ranges quickly, and includes hold offs for moving targets of wind values. They really make shooting at range almost point-and-click. They have a few different patterns based on the same concept. Reticles for 5.56/7.62, 7.62x39/blackout, and .22lr. Great scopes for the price.
Have any thoughts or interest in acquiring the 5.56 conversion for the rifle? Also, the issue with the original line of rifles was that it didn't handle a wide variety of different ammunition well. Milsurp ammunition in particular seemed to have issues(as pointed out by InRange), but the updated rifle appears to work flawlessly.
I will never bet my life on a bullpup rifle period. The couple I've owned both had feeding issues over several brands of ammo. Sold them both within 3 months of ownership. They do look cool however 🍻🇺🇸
I will keep my RFB thank you very much, I know that some malfunctions can be a pain to clear due how the RFB is designed, but the MDR is way too over engineered. I believe that IWI got it right with keeping the bolt/action as simple a possible. I know that concept is not as left hand friendly as the MDR tries to be, but it keeps everything reliable. I know that everyone is different, but as someone who is left handed and left eye dominate; prescription glasses and ergonomics have allowed me to shoot quite well right handed.
That Tactacam is really cool. Being able to see what you see through the scope makes the videos much more entertaining. Can you make a video explainig how it works?
Did you guys figure out what happened with that failure? I've never fired one of these guns but knowing how the ejection system works from your previous video, I wonder if this issue wasn't that the left side port cover wasn't seated properly or fixed tightly enough. If you think about how it workes, the bolt hooks against the lever mechanism on the inside of the left cover and causes the scissor action to push the spent round through to the right-side port. If the left side port cover is loose at all, could the scissor action could just push it's self back against the spend casing hard enough to pop the cover right off instead of pushing it through? Just curious what conclusion you guys came up with?
San Diego California just passed a bill you have to have a proved DOJ lock box and have your weapons in it at all times you're not allowed to leave any weapon outside of the box in your house if a cop sees that you get 6 months in jail
.308 Winchester is a far better hunting round than 6.5 Creedmoor. More flexibility and more energy at responsible hunting ranges, not to mention far better bullet choices. Unless one is too sensitive for the mild recoil of .308 Winchester.
falprepped sorry to hear that. Mine is like Tim’s works pretty much flawlessly. I’ve only had two light primer strikes and four torn rims. Which were with tulammo. Mine has had at least a thousand rounds or more through it. Still love it like the first day.
Can you do a RDB comparison? I have heard the Kel tec RDB will be getting an update, and also be availible in 308 and 6.5 Creedmore. I love the ACSS reticle I recommend them to everyone, they are just so easy to use
I plan to buy the new MDRX in 308. A 20-inch barrel is available but I am wondering if I can get a custom longer barrel. Possibly a 26 or 28 inch. I have not hunted in over 20 years and now I would like to. I plan to hunt hogs in TX, I'm not sure if it's necessary but if I hunt larger game like moose or elk in the western US and Canada I might need to shoot 600 or 800 yards. Any thoughts. Thank you. Dave
I have one of the early mdrs like yours. It’s ran well with a couple of malfunctions. They’ve been a bound up case that gets halfway caught in the ejection shoot. I’d really like for a 3rd party to make an ejection cover that’s a more traditional brass deflector.
Less than 200rds and my July 18 built rifle is going back. Rear pin broke out out both sides of frame. Federal and PMC factory ammo. Pretty disappointing. Hoping to get all the updates I requested. Mine always ran suppressed....ripped off plenty of rims not suppressed. New gas regulator fixed that. Still want this rifle to work....nice layout but needs stronger steel parts.
The window cuts in the handguard are just so you can see what gas setting you're on. It's nearly impossible to adjust the gas system through the handguard.

First and last time I ever saw it. Sometimes weird things happen. Then again I’ve also had a pop no kick in my long career as a shooter. Maybe it’s just me lmao.
I'm looking forward to the Texas hunt you mentioned.
Hey MAC! Would be you be able or willing to do a comparison video between the Tavor 7 and MDR? 😁
that actually happened to me with an ar15 and an cheap surplus mag. as the spent case was ejecting, a round popped out of the mag and slammed the spent case up, stopped the ejection and threw the live round floating in the receiver
Nice package. Really like acss reticle. Is there a bullpup 7.62x51 that you could recommend that you would consider "combat ready"?
The only one I would consider is the Tavor 7. I have a pre-production one I'm testing but it has accuracy issues. They are resolving the accuracy issues. If they accomplish that, it will be the 308 bullpup to beat.
Cool. Thanks. What mags does it use? Or are they proprietary?
Thanks for all you do!
Mac makes it look easy.
It was InRange that had the issues. There 5.56 model is the one that has worked flawlessly.
8:40 what a cute looking scope reticle aha
Thank you.
been waiting for tavor 7 for possible deer rifle. might go with desert tech undecided
Okay I got Idea for fixing Gas adjust on this MDR Rifles. Need connect cabal all way trigger somewhere near trigger flick 6 direction 6 setting Gas pressure adjust.
I like the upside down smilie face reticle
I like this reticle. What kind is it?
The Golf Life
ACSS.
It looked like your mag was on your rest, maybe it caused the issue? Cocking the mag at a bad angle or something ?
Cocking mags is realistically only an issue with aluminum mags.
I had to put my shades on to watch the last part of this video. The glare was crazy 😜
I should have put a warning in the video.
Military Arms Channel you some James reeves tactical short shorts to get some sun on those legs😂
There's nothing more complex about how the MDR cycles versus the RFB, they're just different.
RedGoblin I’ve had an X95 for a few months now and it has been running all kinds of ammo absolutely flawlessly. Cannot recommend it enough.
Just curious what conclusion you guys came up with?
finger looks like its healing up well MAC
It’s doing good. A bit uglier than before but otherwise it’s fine. 👍
@@Militaryarmschannel good to hear
Liked n subscribed awesome videos love em
San Diego California just passed a bill you have to have a proved DOJ lock box and have your weapons in it at all times you're not allowed to leave any weapon outside of the box in your house if a cop sees that you get 6 months in jail
.308 Winchester is a far better hunting round than 6.5 Creedmoor. More flexibility and more energy at responsible hunting ranges, not to mention far better bullet choices.
Unless one is too sensitive for the mild recoil of .308 Winchester.
All nonsense.
12:52 When MAC uses his ultimate technique.
?
MDR vs Tavor 7. Which would you choose?
The Tavor 7 isn't on the market yet. I'll reserve my opinion until I get my hands on a production Tavor 7.
I chose a MDR🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
falprepped sorry to hear that. Mine is like Tim’s works pretty much flawlessly. I’ve only had two light primer strikes and four torn rims. Which were with tulammo. Mine has had at least a thousand rounds or more through it. Still love it like the first day.
Liked hearing about the optic, are you going to do a full video on that particular product line ?
That malfunction reminds me of one I had with my AR10, it was the extractor, Wich they replace the whole bolt for me. Never done it since, 10 years.
Damn, Tim! Leave it to you to break it in ways that no one has managed before.
Thank you. Dave
The failure of the 308 Desert Tech broke my heart
You know they've made changes to fix those starting issues right?
I remember when the original mdr video went up
I have had many many many issues like your 'failure to extract' with the original gas system. On the 2019 I have yet to have an issue
I have one of the early mdrs like yours. It’s ran well with a couple of malfunctions. They’ve been a bound up case that gets halfway caught in the ejection shoot. I’d really like for a 3rd party to make an ejection cover that’s a more traditional brass deflector.
Hey heard you on a talk show good job
Thanks man, it was the Sebastian Gorka show.
Looks like a cool rifle
Love the tacticam :)
Your Poor Left index finger Brother. Ouch!! Looks way better, but I know how bad that had to hurt.
It's good to go now, it's just a little uglier than before.
@@Militaryarmschannel LOL. Glad you still have it. Take care my friend.
I just saw that PA just put out a 2.5-10 gold line, that would a good match
Good video , Pale nein white leg near the end . Then you ask not to make fun of your legs . ? Did your legs turn pink or Red by the end of your day ?
Another rifle I womt be able to afford for years!
The window cuts in the handguard are just so you can see what gas setting you're on. It's nearly impossible to adjust the gas system through the handguard.
Yes, I know.
When you shoot upsidedown, you get a nice SMILING FACE in your optic!
you said it has an 18in barrel, is that a miss speak or is that just not available anymore? I only see 16in versions.
