After seeing the RIDICULOUS penetration from that crazy fast twist, I really want to see this put through a battery of tests for barrier penetration. I'm talking sheet metal, windshields, solid wood door, plywood, exterior walls, even concrete block. Hell, toss in level 3a and level 3 body armor to the mix too. That would really drive home and give a great understanding of the real world penetration capabilities of this fascinating newer round.
I absolutely agree with this, I would love to see that test. I mean in all honesty, when in an urban scenario, you will be penetrating wood, concrete, cinderblock filled and empty, car doors, windows, windshields, armored glass, plate carriers, and drywall. I think this is a brilliant urban sniper, especially if it has massive penetration power! I’m sure once you break certain substances the round will be slowed and slightly pancaked making it a more damaging round after barrier break.
@chrisviviano3271 For sure. I think the applications in an urban setting for this round would be near limitless. I'm dying to see it tested lol.
Add to that how it penetrates ballistic helmets, thick metal, and vehicles. I suspect this cartridge will be proven in combat on the streets of Amerika during the coming civil war.

It won't be a factor. The time til' full breakdown is just too short. It's not even in the hands of 1% of all US shooters.

My Father was DAV from Viet Nam and the state of the local VA hospital was awful. The first time I went in there I was stunned.

@@spaceman624Thanks!

All that in addition to the "facilities" that were at least 20 years behind on average. absolutely despicable how little they actually care.

@@jh5131What do you mean by fully run? Because living in a country with a socialized healthcare, it's not like that at all (Japan), although private hospitals do exist (and you can use the national health insurance system with them anyway).
@@Keepone974 That is your government, and your culture. Japan still believes in things like dedication to one's work and integrity. Perhaps to a fault in some cases.

Never heard of Ree but I want to just say I appreciate what they're doing. My grandpa was drafted into the Navy in Vietnam and has fought with the VA tirelessly for benefits. Appreciate you guys.
My uncle was drafted into the army for Vietnam, later died of complications likely caused by agent orange exposure. The VA was less than useless. And of course they never would admit that AO had anything to do with it. F the VA.
My son is an RN at the local VA. He also is a Vet himself. Even he has problems getting appointments and cooperation. (You would think he would have some inside pull) The major problems are: 1-Manditory Paperwork, 2-No sense of urgency, 3-Dealing with secure seated civilian staff members who don't care. 4- Heavy layers of Federal Bureaucracy.
It is even worse when you get drafted and they don't pay up. Like, hello, I literally did not sign up for this crap.
I just got a call from the VA last Saturday. They didn't leave a voice mail...on a Saturday. Want to bet my record says "tried to contact, patient never returned call."?

I'd like to see it hit plates or a sheet of plywood or something else hard b4 the gel and see what happens.
I really want one of these! The 300 BKO had the same overpenetration issues when it came out, as most bullets are designed to penetrate and expand properly at fast supersonic velocities. A few years ago we were shooting 6.5 Creedmoor at muzzle velocities of around 3000 fps. At 100-200 yards they were penetrating and expanding to about 16-18 inches in ballistic gelatin. At 1000+ yards, they were not expanding and penetrating more than 36 inches.
With the 300 BKO, it performed much better at closer ranges once bullets were developed that were designed to penetrate and expand at subsonic velocities. So this round will be better once those bullets become available to perform at subsonic.
I am impressed at how rounds and guns themselves are getting quieter and quieter as time goes on. Fascinating stuff
the limiting factor is they have to keep the round subsonic
It's the expensive Can & sub-sonic loads.

Precise in their range applies to every round. 300 blackout started as a subsonic hunting cartridge. Considering nost assassinations performed with a firearm are performed at close quarters with non suppressed guns, the whole statement just seems a little poorly thought out.

That round literally drills through, like there was nothing there Wow! What an amazing round so far!
Also we have grizzly bear, cougar around here. Already have a 300 Winchester magnum but it's not going to punch near as deep as this guy will. And all you guys thinking passed through is too far think about bones or skull you might have to punch through. It's not gel.
And that penetration makes it a terrible round for hunting and self defense. Pass through is energy wasted. The objective should always be to dissipate 100% of the energy in the target.
@@ElementofKindnessonly good for big game hunting at that point, but would have to see the energy delivered at the stop. Penetration is absolutely crazy, would like to some vests take a few rounds

Currently building an 8.6BLK AR. Getting ahold of the barrel and finding the ammo, if you don't reload, are the hardest things to get. Faxon is the only one currently making barrels, they made the ones for Q for this rifle. Everything else is pretty much standard for a .308 build though, even the bcg.
Just a heads up to anyone reading this - I am also at near completion of an 8" 8.6blk LR-308 build. Currently, the barrel is back at Faxon for testing since 300gr SMKs are getting jammed into the lands of the barrel (I believe the freebore in the barrel was not cut long enough) and cannot be extracted manually without the bullet separating from the case. I found that setting the bullet into the case a few hundredths deeper resolves the issue. Will update with Faxon's response if I can remember lol
Finished mine, it's so awesome to shoot other than the price of ammo. Everyone I've let try it loves it, the bullet smacking the railroad tie backstop at 100 yards is louder than the gunshot when suppressed.

I was impressed with the Fix when Ian first reviewed it, and now I’m even more impressed - both from the absurd penetration perspective (although how practical it is can be open to question) and how much fun it appears to be to shoot.
I think it has the potential to be a very good scout rifle, certainly as a backup or secondary weapon in conjunction with something more general purpose.
But then, I have odd ideas about what a practical use case for such weapons in a conflict scenario I - or someone else - might be involved in.
And - perhaps more realistically in current usage - it seems to be intensely good fun.
The 8.6 caught my attention the first time I saw it for hunting applications. I settled on a 450 BM running subsonic/suppressed.
Why did you choose that over 458 Socom?
@machinesandthings7121
Ease of finding ammo and bullet selection either manufactured or what I reload for myself.
The 450BM can sling a 200gr over 2600fps or simply sling a 395gr at 1050fps for subsonic use.
I do have a 458Socom and 50 beo to also play with, and both are great rounds and effective depending on your needs. The 450BM is just way more popular cartridge and feeding it easier than most other big bores.
Never seen 458 in any store, seen 50beo twice in the last 5 or 6 years, 450 is everywhere, basically.
@@davidl416black butterfly makes some insane hunting loads for 450bm and 458socom
I absolutely get what they're doing with the super-fast twist-- rotational energy doesn't bleed off NEARLY as fast as linear energy-- but I'd had ZERO idea that that would translate to this kind of penetration. I'd really like to see what it does on meat and bone, or at least stacked layers of wet newsprint and 1/4" plywood.
Literally the greatest intros of all of youtube history. Fcking love this guy. See you at the MAP festival guys. Well like not in the crowd but like on a roof top looking down at it with a scope 😉
That's literally your opinion. Which means nothing lol
Great video. Check out 375 Raptor. Same concept but bigger bullets.
we 100% will!
So a bolt action 300 BO is pretty darn quiet ---much quieter than in an AR platform. But...this is a very impressive round with some unique roles ahead.
The 8.6 Blackout literally drills through those blocks!
It would be cool to see the effects of this 8.6 and load through different levels of armor into ballistic blocks.
Gel blocks are likely highly compromised by the outside temps. THAT SAID, still pretty impressive. Another great vid.
Animal based gel would fail quickly. Some of the Clear Ballistics stuff is a lot more stable.
@@exothermal.sprocketexcept it had visibly melted to the table.
@@ravissary79 Yeah it will eventually. I bet the temps were pretty hot there.
I would like to see what that round does to 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 AR500 plates at 25 or 50yrds. Impressive, love the vid👌
I wonder if there's like an air pocket effect along with that twist rate helping that one subsonic round sail through like that that is crazy
My suspicion is that the spin rate combined with the velocity and large diameter hollow point creates a “cutting” type condition. It would be interesting to see what a similar bullet would do in a supersonic condition.
I don’t think it actually expanded….
Imagine replicating a metal milling bit operation in a 285gr slug at 100yds.
You haven't been shot. You have been remotely machined.
I think it also helps that its subsonic so it dumps less energy into the target.
I built a 338 spectre years ago after falling in love with it's specs. It's based on the 41 Mag pistol case and cases are available for purchase. The itch spread and I ended up building a 510 whisper off an old 338 Lapua Mag setup. The 510 Whisper is subsonic only and at 500 meters, it only looses about 90 fps with a 760 gn high BC projectile. Here piggy piggy piggy, THUMP!!! I digress, the beauty of the 338 spectre is, it feeds and runs the ar15 action! Yup, full bolt carry through and rechambering every time with a stock gas system and buffer and mags. Just a barrel and bolt and you're in business with a 338 thumper thats tried and tested.
Best cartridge that will never be less then 2$ Pr round.
Shipping not included.
@Grand Thumb
need a follow up on this with ballistics from different types of ammo
Great dad advice, I'm trying to instill that upon my kid who is looking at fancy universities to get their associates degree.
Debt sucks.
Garand Thumb should DEFINITELY be in films. Absolutely no question. He could star in ANY action film and sell out the theater no problem
"Training Films"
We definitely need to see the outcome of a ballistic dummy with level IV body armor
Very nice and informative video.
The 8.6 Blackout seems to be a very interesting round.
I wander if the bullet rotation at half a million turns per minute would create a cavitation effect if the gun was fired under water, thus allowing the round to travel straight and be effective for 50 or 60 yards.
Maybe Dr. Garand Thumb is interested to test the 8.6 Blackout underwater.
Reminds me of the Ruski 9x39mm, and the rifle almost reminds me of a AS-VAL, minus the automatic and integrated suppressor of course. I think this may be a good 9x39 sub for VSS & VAL clones... I like it. Thanks for sharing.
.350 Legend subsonic is available now.
The most satisfying 30 second intro ever
I've had an unreasonable fetish around heavy-for-caliber rounds recently. Something about smiting stuff with a kitchen sink speaks to me deeply.
You should see a 630gr pill going out of a 458 socom
Good gun stuff right here, also REE got me my 100% this past June after about two years of battling the VA.
I'd be interested in a comparison of the 8.6 to the .375 Raptor
Drooled on my phone a couple times watching this holy shit that thing is insane!
I think you can use this rifle like the VAL\ Vintorez. Like a close range sniper and it is just as quiet. I think thats a good role for this rifle. Awesome rifle.
Thats a very impressive round! Im curious to see it against armored targets as well.
SIGNATURE REDUCTION explanation was on point. He would make a good high school teacher.
*Cries in Californian*
Wish I lived in a different country...like the USA.
Love the dad advice, "if you don't have the money on hand don't spend it." I've thought that forever.
Would like to see that crazy round shot at some armor plates (ceramic, UHWMPE).
everyone i've seen that shoots this gun is blown away by it. i can't wait to get my hands on one.
From what I see I think the 8.6 may fit the brush gun category.
'Full disclosure' sounds better than 'to be clear'
If one could get that big 8.6mm bullet to expand in the 8-16 inch range, without flying apart while traveling to the target, it will become the next "must-get" gun of the year. I'm sure they are working hard to find the right recipe right now. This rig has great potential. I M pleased.
