I looked at one video, it was replacing something up top with the control board. I was so upset thinking about costs of a new washer, giving up and ready to turn off the tv, then the next video came on “hey guys Chris fix here” I perked up so fast, seen a similar model washer and the noise sound was the same sound I was hearing, then he said it was a pretty cheap part 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽🎊🥳🎉🍾 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽once again, Chris fix saved the day! The farther back you can lay over the machine, the easier it will be w/o having to remove the cabinet. Beyond 45º worked well. The weight of the motor will assist in re-seating the motor to the transmission. I used a dab of dishwashing liquid on the plastic tabs of the coupler to make it easier to slide the motor onto the seated coupler in the transmission. A rubber mallet is a must. Not quite the "5-minute job" Chris billed it to be, but still HUGE cudos to him for providing this video and enabling me to avaoid a call to the Maytag [in this case, Kenmore] repair man! Thanks, Chris!
yes, but then you'd want to remove the H and C supply hoses and the drain hose. So instead put a bucket or paint can BEHIND the machine when tilting it back so you don't have to take off the hoses etc.
Another important reason NOT to lay the washer entirely down on the floor-there’s a vent hole on the top surface of the gear case and it can leak oil. It is nearly impossible to refill this oil and a new gear case is big bucks$.
Thank you for posting this! I watched this excellent friendly, low-key, straight-forward presentation, ordered the part, and got my machine back in operation in about a half hour (took my time). The jack-stand idea is genius!
I was about to buy a new washer when I found your video. I'm not a mechanic or a regular handyman, but your video was clear and my wife is now washing laundry again with our 20-year-old Roper washing machine. Thank You.
Thanks for the vid, Chris. This is why it's awesome to have a back-catalog of your old stuff -- there are still a TON of these old Kenmore washers around, and they're increasingly likely to need this type of simple repair. This is why I've watched your channel go from barely 5 digits, to nearly 5 million subs.
I want to say thank you so much.. I am a single female that will try anything. My washer was going and heard the exact noise that was on the video.. I went and bought the part and fixed it myself.. I was so excited.. my kids call me superwoman 😊
Ok so I followed your video exactly. you explained everything so well. I can officially say I fixed my washer by myself..with some great directions from you of course lol. thanks!!!
Can't thank you enough. I know nothing about washing machines, but was able to fix my 19 year old machine. Working like new! It didn't however, take 10 minutes, but was well worth the time and effort.
@ChrisFix - You taught me car repair and gave me the confidence to do so much more than I ever thought I'd be able to do on my own in my very own driveway, but I must admit - I never ever would've thought you'd show me how to fix my washing machine as well. From the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU!!
This happens when you overload the washing machine..Ive replaced 4 couplers.. on the same washing machine, still working after 11 years..this is now 2021 and the couplers cost $7.00 on amazon.. this is the best video i have seen on youtube for this fix..thanks for sharing
I’m stuck at home with pneumonia and my washing machine won’t spin. I watched your video and ordered the part from Amazon. Even though I’m dazed and short of breath from the pneumonia, I was able to prop the machine up, pull the motor off, and successfully change out the part. I still feel like crap, but at least I don’t have to smell bad, too. Your video is the best. Thank you very much!
Hey Chris! I forgot to thank you for this one, saved me tons of money instead of trashing my old washing machine I found your vid and knew it would be a good fix. Mine had the exact same problem, just my motor was in a different location but it turned out to be such a simple fix, and I can keep my washer longer now! Thanks so much man!
OMG! I know this video was published years ago, I just happened to come across it. This was the exact issue my Washing machine was having. I was ready to just scrap it and spend hundreds of dollars on a new one. My part cost a little more ($30), but I was able to get it today and swap it out thanks to this video. Chris, you are the man!!!! I'm now a subscriber.
Thanks for the great instructional video. Took mine apart in less than 3 minutes with your instructions, ordered part now $7, waiting for part to arrive tomorrow to install. Thanks again. Can’t believe it was that easy.
My washer has been dead for a year. Ive had to go to the dreaded laundry mat since then. After watching this video I fixed my washer in less than ten minutes. Thank you so much.
I just fixed my old Whirlpool washer with this video as my guide. Took me about 2 hours rather than 10 minutes. My laundry room was so cramped, I could not lean the washer back very far; I had to rest my arms and feel blindly to detach and attach the top clips But your video helped me visualize the tasks. And now the washer works. Thank you! P.S. In 2020, the price of the coupler is $5.89, but that's peanuts compared to the repair person (who is unavailable anyway due to covid-19.)
Thank you for this video, it was awesome!!! My Dad and I just fixed our machine. Not sure where you are but here in Ontario Canada our part cost us $ 27.58 😬 but hey better that than a $900 on a new machine!
Thank you Chris for sharing. My wife said our Whirlpool wash machine did not spin. I watched your video and dicovered exactly as you decribed - the plastic coupler was broken. Thank you once again Chris!
Thank you!! I've got to see if I can find the part but this sound exactly like my issue. Whether this does or does not fix my issue, wanted you to know that I think you did a great job with making this video. It's very clear, understandable and you make sure we get a good look at the parts on the machine.
I have an older whirlpool top load washer from the early 90's that recently stopped working. It filled and drained the drum like normal but neither the agitator nor the drum would spin. The clothes basically just sat in still water for 15 minutes. Thankfully my washer design is almost exactly like the Kenmore in this video, so every step that Chris does matches with my washer too. I checked under the washer and found lots of shredded plastic and broken prongs from the old coupler. I knew immediately that I had the same issue from the video. Every step was the same as Chris described, except the coupler I used was really hard to get on the motor and transmission shafts. that caused a 15 minute job to turn into 2 hours. I had to use a hammer to get them on, and it still took well over an hour to get them both on. After that everything else just fell into place. I'm so thankful for this video, this video and an $8 coupler saved me from having to spend several hundreds of dollars to replace my washer. It works just like before! I'm glad there's a channel likes Chris' that encourages regular people to perform their own repairs.
"It's a 2 dollar part!" "It's a 5 minute job!" "Let me show you how to replace it now that we've identified the problem" Great video bro! It's quick and to the point.
Well done sir! Worked just like you demonstrated and saved me a bundle! I’m not that handy and yet, your video gave me enough confidence to get the job done. Thank you.
I know you did this video tutorial 6 years ago but I just found it because I have the exact same model number washer & dryer as you do. Should I ever have this problem in the future, I have this to reference how to fix it. So far, the only thing I had to fix was the broken auger (the top part of the agitator) which was not spinning. That was one of the fastest and easiest fixes I've ever done on a washer. Like in this video, my repair only costed me $6.00. What needed replacing were the four dogs inside the auger. Only tool needed was a ratchet with a 7/16 socket on an extender. Thanks Chris for doing this fix.
On the one hand you made that look way easier than it was! 😅 On the other hand, and more importantly, this video was a life saver! Well shot with clear closeups - nicely done!
Thank you so much for this video!! I fixed it all by myself and saved hundreds! I really like how you went through it step by step and even put a link to the part I needed. Thank you!!!
Ok, I havent repaired my washer yet, BUT, I tilted it back, put my car jack stand underneath and mine looks exactly like yours. I can see the couple is broken, so I'll be ordering a new part. You are the man Chris! Thank you!

Thank you , this was the best video I’ve seen to fix this. I am a single mom and your video help me fix my own washer. No man wanted to fix it for me or they wanted to charge me $100 to fix, when the part was only $8 bucks on Amazon. Your easy step video was the truth!!! Thank you! ❤

I looked up videos and figured out it was the coupler, but they had me thinking I had to take the control panel off and remove the outer shell or whatever. Soon as I got the coupler, I went back to RUclips to follow the steps, and I found your video. You saved me alot of time, and I now have clean underwear. Many thanks.
As described! What an excellent and informative tutorial. EVERYTHING was exactly the deal.... right down to vacuuming around the dust around the bottom of the appliance. Thank you so much for bothering to do this. From Manitoba, Canada! :)
Just wanted to thank you! Made my job easier with the car jack method. The coupler is now $18 ... but much cheaper and quicker than calling a mechanic! I also enjoy your other videos for years...Thank you again!
Hey Chris - Great quick fix and a step by step to repair the washing machine coupling - always like watching your videos as all the other you tube people will agree .
I owe you at least one case of beer. I couldn't get a repair company to come out to fix our washer. We have three adults and one newborn baby in the house, we needed our washing machine. Your diagnosis was spot on. The Amazon part number was right. Your step-by-step instructions where also spot on. The only difference in my machine was that there were only clips and not bolts holding everything together. 10 minutes start to finish. Thanks Again!
Order a couple extra, it will happen again, replaced mine probably 6 times in 24 years and still going!!! Order on Ebay Part Number 285753A Ebay Item Number 371483231859 $6.37 ea
Great guide. My old school whirlpool's rubber bit in the coupler shaved itsself a bit so i cleaned it an aligned it back up. It's still working but not for long so I ordered my part and just looked this up to see what I was doing. Straight forward and because of ChrisFix I may use AC Delco stands to hold it up XD
Saved my washing machine thanks to you!! I thought it was done after 20 yrs. The part was $16 at a local shop. I didn't want to wait for the $8 coupler on Amazon ( side note- the part sizing was off, and used the old part for side that didn't level out). Took me longer 30-40 min because of lack of tools and space. Glad I was able to diagnose and repair it because of your video!
I LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU GO TO THE SIMPLE REASON FOR NOT SPINNING OUT FIRST INSTEAD OF MOTORS, TRANSMISSIONS AND THE LIKE. SOME OTHER PEOPLE ARE CHECKING MOTORS OR PUMPS ETC. MOST OF THE TIME THE MOTOR COUPLER BREAKS & THE WASHER WILL NOT SPIN, AND IT WILL DO IT FOR THE REASONS YOU SAID. THANK YOU.
Thanks! I am going to order the part right now. I have a jack stand in the basement because my son left it there many years ago. Thanks again. I am a 69 year old female. You make it look not too difficult. I love the way you explain as if you are talking to a novice. Some people know their stuff but don't know how to teach it to others. Great work. I hope this works for me. I will update when I am done.
@@SwagJaws It works fine now. I used the jackstand and but I didn't have to purchase the part. I removed both hoses from the motor/filter. I couldn't see any obstruction so I blew on the hoses. The one that goes to the outside drain hose, had some resistance and I blew until there was none. I reassembled the unit and it works great. Thanks.
Chris you legit just saved me hundreds… i was about to go buy a new washing machine bc honestly it is time for one but thought “let me see if there’s any quick fix to this” Watched your video , ordered the $7 part on Amazon and fixed it in 10 mins the next day! Thank you!! Great step by step

This worked great for me too and was a huge help. The tip to leave the cabinet on and just tip the washer saved me from having to empty out my 6 shelf storage rack blocking full access to the washer in my narrow laundry room. Here a few more tips. 1. Obvious in hind sight, but don't wear anything you care about. Motor grease seems to spread like poison ivy. You touch the motor then the floor, then your shirt rubs in it and it's ruined. 2. Part costs $25 online and I waited 5 days. I did not realize its a common part that even Home Depot stocks, $8 these days. 3. In my case the plastic wasn't broken when I took it out, so I worried this part was not the problem. What I did see though was that on one side of the coupler, the metal insert was slightly rounded out on the two straight sides. This was all it took to produce no spin on a large load.
Thanks man! One video had me trying to take the shell off first. I was like, What a pain in the ass. Has to be an easier way... Found your vid. Jack stand and a straight screedriver, DONE! Lol, I didn't need the 1/4. Apparently this machine was worked on before because they didn't put those back in! Hah Keep creating brotha!

I was so excited.. my kids call me superwoman 😊
haha, only chrisfix uses jackstands on his washing machine

He didn’t give us torque specifications?
This is how a car mechanic fixes his washing machine.
Ok so I followed your video exactly. you explained everything so well. I can officially say I fixed my washer by myself..with some great directions from you of course lol. thanks!!!
Awesome!!! Glad the video was helpful and nice work!

briana vega i like your surname, it reminds me of AMDs Vega GPU
briana vega you think I should get a Vega 64 or wait for Volta/navi?
Can't thank you enough. I know nothing about washing machines, but was able to fix my 19 year old machine. Working like new! It didn't however, take 10 minutes, but was well worth the time and effort.
@ChrisFix - You taught me car repair and gave me the confidence to do so much more than I ever thought I'd be able to do on my own in my very own driveway, but I must admit - I never ever would've thought you'd show me how to fix my washing machine as well. From the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU!!
Yay I fixed it myself! The trick is making sure it's pushed back far enough so you have easy access to the bottom side.
This happens when you overload the washing machine..Ive replaced 4 couplers.. on the same washing machine, still working after 11 years..this is now 2021 and the couplers cost $7.00 on amazon.. this is the best video i have seen on youtube for this fix..thanks for sharing
Just had this exact issue with our kenmore. Thanks to your video, problem solved. Thank you Chris
Glad it helped
I wish I had seen this before I gave away a 1200 dollar washer lol
If it was a front load washer then it’s different.
Don’t kick yourself. Doesn’t always work. Sometimes machines are just crap.
This was a pleasant surprise. I am so used to you working on cars Chris. Nice video.
I bet that can hold a whole bunch of soapy wooder.

Thanks!! Best video I could find for fixing my washing machine. Instructions worked perfectly. Very detailed. Excellent instructional video!
I like how you don’t only work on cars but other things too
Thanks Saul! Anything to help people!

@@chrisfix You are a great guy
Who would've thought I would be watching ChrisFix on how to fix my washer. lol
Chrisfix only not fix cars but fix washing machines as well

"It's a 2 dollar part!"
"It's a 5 minute job!"
"Let me show you how to replace it now that we've identified the problem"
Great video bro! It's quick and to the point.
On these days with 2 dollars you only can get a bolt and small size nut,
It took more than 15minutes to raise up the washer, by yourself along.
I so much agree! Even though I paid $7 for the piece, your instructions were great! I know I saved!
Over 7 years later and you are still helping people. I followed your video and with just $20 on the part I was able to save hundreds. Thanks so much!
Instructions unclear, removed the engine from my car.

Everybody: Hell yeah
I know its been about 5 years since you made this video. I want to thank you. Mine broke down last week. And your video solved the problem. Thank you.
Thanks Chris, changed out the coupler on my 22yr old Whirlpool washer.
This guy not only fixes your cars, he fixes your appliances too. What a champ.
Ok, I havent repaired my washer yet, BUT, I tilted it back, put my car jack stand underneath and mine looks exactly like yours. I can see the couple is broken, so I'll be ordering a new part. You are the man Chris! Thank you!
Ahhhhh finally. Most mechanics fix all kinds of things around the house and we finally get a video. Love it hahaha!
Excellent video! Clear instructions, nice camera work, and a complete job A-Z. Thanks!
OK, This guy drives and fixes cool cars, once gave amazing automotive career advice to my son, teaches automotive repair and maintenance AND just taught me how to fix my washer. We LOVE this guy!

Thank you , this was the best video I’ve seen to fix this. I am a single mom and your video help me fix my own washer. No man wanted to fix it for me or they wanted to charge me $100 to fix, when the part was only $8 bucks on Amazon. Your easy step video was the truth!!! Thank you! ❤
Excellent video Chris. Just the information I needed. These old machines are built like tanks - ours has been going for over 34 years! :-)
Excellent tutorial, much appreciated!! You have every detailed covered and thank you for not having any music or fowl language!!!
Hey man, my washing machine took a crap a few days ago.
Not only ChrisFix is a Car Mechanic, but he is also a household mechanic. 🙂
Just wanted to thank you! Made my job easier with the car jack method. The coupler is now $18 ... but much cheaper and quicker than calling a mechanic!
I also enjoy your other videos for years...Thank you again!
Hey Chris -
Great quick fix and a step by step to repair the washing machine coupling -

I owe you at least one case of beer. I couldn't get a repair company to come out to fix our washer. We have three adults and one newborn baby in the house, we needed our washing machine. Your diagnosis was spot on. The Amazon part number was right. Your step-by-step instructions where also spot on. The only difference in my machine was that there were only clips and not bolts holding everything together. 10 minutes start to finish. Thanks Again!
Thank you for this video ChrisFix! I am going to attempt to fix my washer now! This is the best video EVER!!
Order a couple extra, it will happen again, replaced mine probably 6 times in 24 years and still going!!! Order on Ebay Part Number 285753A Ebay Item Number 371483231859 $6.37 ea

2020 anyone?
Broke in 2019 but finally getting to it now 2020.
Ha! Pretty much. My spare finally broke so I fixed my good one 2 years later

Same spare broke fix original today. It broke 2 years ago lol
Just visiting from LTT’s RUclips charging for 4K video 😛
Saved my washing machine thanks to you!! I thought it was done after 20 yrs. The part was $16 at a local shop. I didn't want to wait for the $8 coupler on Amazon ( side note- the part sizing was off, and used the old part for side that didn't level out). Took me longer 30-40 min because of lack of tools and space. Glad I was able to diagnose and repair it because of your video!
Whoa whoa whoa hold on, where's the jack ? Where's the torque wrench ?
And the thread locker

Omg, thank you thank you, this is a Great video i fix my own washer, im so happy i didn’t have to buy a new washer
THANK YOU.
“Does your washer not spin and sound like this?”
Me: OH MY GOD 😱
Yes
Literally!!

@@rippygirl423 Hey how did the repair go?
@@SwagJaws It works fine now. I used the jackstand and but I didn't have to purchase the part. I removed both hoses from the motor/filter. I couldn't see any obstruction so I blew on the hoses. The one that goes to the outside drain hose, had some resistance and I blew until there was none. I reassembled the unit and it works great. Thanks.
Chris you legit just saved me hundreds… i was about to go buy a new washing machine bc honestly it is time for one but thought “let me see if there’s any quick fix to this”
Watched your video , ordered the $7 part on Amazon and fixed it in 10 mins the next day!

Great job of explaining this for non-mechanics! We're going to try it! :-)
