Life happens… I got the driveway redone so I couldn’t film for a few weeks and then I went looking for houses in another state and got sick so I had to quarantine for another 3 weeks until I got a negative result. Hi Chris. Driveway looks good. Been doing asphalt for 30yrs so this will sound picky. But the reason why there’s rock pockets near the garage and by the concrete walkway they cut is because they too too long to compact the asphalt right away. When you spread by hand or rake and shovel by hand you end up separating the sand and rock in the mix and end up with segregation. So you have to compact that area right away before it loses heat. In this case they should have had the plate compactor ready to go and start once there was room. Anyhow some future advice would be to seal your driveway, doing that will prolong the life but also hide any imperfections on the driveway. I just stumbled on to your channel and I’m really enjoying your content. It’s really helped me out a lot. Thanks for the Tips !!
What are you even talking about, the concrete walkway was cut because it got damaged when they were removing the old asphalt. They weren't anywhere near the compacting stage...
I’m convinced Chris’s style of recording, editing, and constant voiceover is why his videos are always so fun to watch. I couldn’t care less about laying down asphalt but I still watched the entire video without ever feeling bored or uninterested!

It doesn't matter what you do for work as long as you take pride in doing it. These guys made this look easy because they are so experienced and really take pride in it. Like you said the results speak for themselves.
Asphalt contractor here. Was just going to add that the price depends on difficulty. Your driveway was pretty simple: Straight passes, no subgrade for new sub base exc. Looks nice! They did a good job
I remember doing this job for summer work with my father as he was the driver of the dump truck and I would stay with the crew on site. These types of work is not easy and very demanding, also very interesting to get to know how its done imo. Amazing for letting people actually see how its done and explaining for people who might not have know or ever wondered how its done.
@@bigbuck807 over here in north Texas you won’t see any of these . They did re pave streets in Highland Park , which is where wealthy people live, and I don’t know why they chose that material instead of concrete
@@bigbuck807 I think it’s because it looks good and it’s way faster than concrete as it sets fast and cars can drive on it sooner. I remember it wasn’t really that inconvenient because they only blocked half the street and it was done quickly
Those guys did a brilliant job! I love it when tradesmen/builders keep their equipment clean like that. Shows a true commitment to the craft and job at hand, and any equipment works better when it's clean anyway!
I used to work with asphault specifically for 3 years and by watching this, it brought me back to that time. It’s very hot stuff and they guys def knew what they were doing! Great job Chris, looks awesome!

As someone who helped the family paving business from age 11 to 26, I was prepared to judge hard. But these guys did an amazing job! Excellent work and service. Another tip for anyone interested, is to avoid turning your steering wheel on fresh asphalt when your car is not moving. My dad called them "power steering marks." He'd receive calls all the time saying the asphalt is tearing up. But it was simply due to the steering wheels being turned while the vehicles were stationary. Nothing major to worry about. The marks will iron out over time. But if you're picky about your finish, make it a habit to have the car moving before turning the wheel.
@Billy William it's ok every now and again, it's more for people who park in the same place everyday and do it everyday and also I'd wait like a week. Just a guess
@Billy William still wouldn't suggest that because that is hard on your power steering pump and can tear that up faster always try to be moving a little to help
Only time will tell how great the asphalt job was. I paid $8000 for a complete replacement 4" thick asphalt driveway this large in Philly in 2022. You got a very good deal. I will say this, because they reuse asphalt, the new material is grainy and can accumulate weed growth and in some places even flakes off. My contractor admitted this up front. Get the best grade asphalt they have.
I do this with all my tools. It keeps them in good working order. Plus I didn’t have much growing up so I learned to take care of the things I had, and it carried over to the things I own now. Take care of your tools and they will take care of you.
I actually do asphalt work and these guys are very professional and really know what they’re doing, I’m glad they could get the finish on that so nice, perfect!!
I've been in asphalt for going on 20 years. Good quality job done by the paving crew and credit to you Chris for actually using the correct terminology as far as the asphalt goes.
For 6k that was definately worth it! They did a high quality job. And you got video content to make up for the down time. I'm glad our views and support helped pay for maybe part of those expenses. Keep on giving!
Like people have stated, it's crazy you can get this precise work for 6,000$ and completed in just 4 hours. This is unheard of in most parts of the world. Usually where I live the same process is never completed this quickly, On average such things take DAYS yep DAYS not hours. These guys did a stellar job and this coming from someone who used to prep ground for asphalting and sometimes involved in asphalting as well.
These guys had the works though compared to other companies, that is for sure. Quite a few staff plus the big machinery to speed up the process. The guys I hired to do my driveway definitely took longer but they also didn't have a giant asphalt rig.
Likely should have let the base dry before laying the Asphalt. I'd have given it at least a warm afternoon to cure before vapor locking the hmac. Also spraying down the fresh lay is not best practice. Other than that the end product looks good and a great price. Would not recommend putting that screed on the base either but hey the owner was ok with it! Great video, impressive commentary
Aye man, I have a quick question. If asphalt is fresh, less than a day fresh, is it safe to let traffic through? It was done in front of my house and I would like to know if letting traffic onto fresh asphalt is going to cause it to warp or degrade faster. There are concrete curbs btw.
@@burneracc2567 yes, most of the time the asphalt is below 100 degrees within 1.5-2 hours and it is safe to put traffic on that day. Just don’t twist and turn your tires on it while it’s still fairly fresh and you’ll be fine!! Sometimes we put highway traffic on the asphalt right after we finish paving to open the road for the day then come back and finish at night. You’ll be fine!

Yet another great, satisfying video! A few more do-it-yourself tips for maintenance: After a year or two the new asphalt will slightly shrink and may pull away from the driveway door, leaving a large gap. Driveway filler is readily available from the hardware store and you can easily fix that yourself. If weeds take root inside some cracks, the best solution is to use a blowtorch to burn the weeds and kill the roots, then apply a sealer. Aside from causing needless pollution, weed killer just doesn't work well.
I didn't think I was gonna enjoy this at all but it was actually incredibly satisfying. I just got into my first home and I am watching all these kind of maintenance and care videos and I am like this is nice, I'd like that. Woah 4 hours and they did it that nicely :O I thought it was a lot longer process. That is totally worth the money! 5 bucks and a quarter per square foot isn't bad :O it looks amazing!

Almost all contracting companies are required to fix those kinds of mistakes under penalty of being sued or worse. Just a bunch of legal bs but if you’re a cool customer, it usually goes about like it did in the video.
As a Civil Engineer I approve of that company's work, they did a dang good job, I was happy to see them take the time to actually get all the small details instead of just ignoring it like alot of contractors do
If I had to take a guess as an E1 for a state DOT, namely snapping string lines for the edge of the driveway and for the concrete sawcut. Remembering to use water when compacting the quarry processed rock (in my state we call it crushed surfacing top course), taking care to preserve the original subgrade, taking the extra step to use the paver as a grader for the quarry processed rock and even running the plate compactor over the finished asphalt

As a road worker from the Netherlands, it is very interesting to see how people in other countries work. They did a great job and it is definitly a strong construction. But in the Netherlands this would not be accepted due to little details like they did not apply an adhesive layer between the sides of the garage/sidewalk and the asphalt. This layer ensures that the asphalt wont let loose/crack over time. Nevertheless a great video and i hope you will be happy with your new driveway!
Dont quote me on this but im pretty sure with our Harsh winters in certain regions in America the adhesive isnt required... The concrete will crack anyways due to the changes in temperatures..
@@CarpaccioSalad Concrete should not crack due to the changes in temperatures. If this happens the weather conditions weren't taken in account. This should be avoided by adding porosity into the mixture of concrete. Porosity in concrete avoids cracks caused by water freezing in concrete (freezing water expands and causes the cracks if we are focusing on weather conditions).

@@deluxejay69 for the machinery and crew they had, they could have paved 100m of asphalt in 4 hours. this would be a very quick job for those guys. the stuff they did doesn't take long when you have the right tools, especially a tiny driveway.

I was going to talk about using a plate under jackstands, but he mentioned that! One thing that’s important to be careful with is gas or diesel getting onto pavement, they eat away at asphalt. Enjoyed watching this and really related to how satisfying paving is. I do paving work with my dump truck, I work on a lot of parking lots, streets, and highways. Never seen a driveway done so it was fun to watch and I’m glad to see that they still take all the same precautions on a smaller scale.

edging should have been done better ngl, shouldnt of just used the loot but a tamper to get the edges tighter and more compact to make a nice 45 degree. for roads it doesnt matter but on a driveway it changes how good it looks by a ton
@@sonofagun5305 it looks good no doubt however proper edging of the asphalt makes straighter lines so the edge wont look wiggly after the edge is covered with dirt

@@Tha-mountain grading and placement were good. Can't be sure of of temp which, if it's too high will result in his paved driveway looking like a gravel driveway lol. I would have used s9.5 instead of an intermediate mix but other than that, looks pretty damn good.
For a guy that works on a lot of cars he didn't make a oil Bay any drainage he should have made it out of concrete... Oil and gas fun fact eats through asphalt because gas can eat through tar I've laid hundreds of thousands of tons of asphalt for the government... And the number one scary thing is that guy cutting that concrete with the saw no mask man the silica that creates from that dust gets in his lungs not smart I know he put water on after I watch the video but at first he dusted all those workers and himself....The whole driveway should have been plate tamped with water for a higher compaction rate he'll have sinkholes.. we used to have to get our roads at 99% compaction rating and they would be tested with this guy he had this yellow box he would set it on the ground had a radiation badge because it uses some type of device to tell the compaction of the dirt... So I think he's missed a lot and I think he really wasted his money put in asphalt .. But these are my opinions take them as you will....
@@cleanearth6238 I'm that guy with the "yellow box" aka troxler nuclear density test lol. Now the standard is 98% across 5 tests with none of the scores being lower than 95% for that test section unless overruled by the resident engineer. At least in NC.

At 0:40 I call those "caster canyons." In my new house the relief cuts were substituted with HUGE edging corners. I'd about dump the drawers out of my cart, box, or whatever every time I'd creeper over them. In the new garage I have legit relief cuts done by a concrete saw like you had trim your sidewalk. SO MUCH better!

Looks great! I remember in 1993 my dad had our 75 foot driveway paved, such a big job but so worth it. Easier to work in my truck, and easier to clear snow off.

Heck, for the first few years of making videos, RUclips didnt even have a partner program or pay people haha. I used to just watch your videos and just appreciate the information given. After making a couple videos of my own I really understand just how much work and love you’ve really put into every single video you’ve made. The editing process for a video like this has got to be so hard. I really have a newfound appreciation for your videos and everything you do for your viewers.
Being mindful of that is huge, not everybody really thinks about that side of things until they get into it themselves, recording and editing and being so consistent with your content is a ton of work!

Thank you for telling us the price of the driveway. Most of these drive way repairs vids never say the cost, only the time it took/steps. Now I know it's something that's not too extreme to pay for.
Driveway looks great. You hit on the 2 things I was looking for. Pressure from the jack stands and oil. Both are driveway killers. Glad you have a solution for both.
Damn, I feel bad then. All the money I save working on my own car, probably caused thousands in damage to my driveway that has a ton of cracks on it now probably from oil and transmission fluids. Wish I knew, maybe I would have done a better job of washing that stuff away.
our road that was like 20yrs old and the neighboring road (street) were done like a few months ago before the snow and it was so nice and smooth my bike tires just went along it and stiked to it and best feeling ever. now its not as good but so SMOOTH i love it

hey Chris, the drive looks great, i would suggest using Bitumen tape (dunno if its still called that across the pond) on the edges to the garage and side walk this will prevent any water from freezing and causing chunks to peel away. also it will give a smoother transition for moving your tool box which will eventually chip at the small lip joining the garage
This channel has taught me a lot about cars, ive done engine crap all the way up to an entire gas tank now. im doing a transmission and u-joints soon. then you inspired me to redo the faucets and clean all our sinks out. Thank you Chris
You’d be surprised how much you can knock out in a day. I do asphalt milling for a living, and between us and the paving crew we can knock out a fairly large neighborhood with multiple cudlesacs in a single work day.
That was amazing. When Chris said "and that means the job is finished, it took 4 hours" I legitimately was taken aback. I'm not sure if it's just a southern thing, but the fact he said this job took 4 hours and not 2 days is astounding to me. Here in Georgia due to immense heats and humidity construction and especially roadwork takes days even for small jobs. Road work in New Jersey seems amazing and super quick! Can't believe they did all of this before lunchtime was done WOW!
@@bigpatty823 I understand that but our road infrastructure down here is actually abysmal. Driveways and what not. We usually use grey tarmac over black tarmac though due to the heat as well, don't know if that makes any difference

It can get a bit more expensive if you have to do it from scratch and or remove a really bad driveway + root. In this case, tho the OG contractor was a pooch and skimmed it, the base was good, well compacted. Note how little they upset it when they were doing the old asphalt removal. So half the work was already in place. Also, the right sized crew for the right sized job. I've seen a lot of people screw themselves royally by hiring companies that do far bigger volume work. These guys were clearly set for work in small quantities from the equipment to the size of their crew. This should last him good years.

Great video Chris, you did a great job showing and explaining the process of replacing your driveway. Im a fourth generation paving contractor. You used correct terminology on nearly everything and explained it cleaner than I've ever heard! $6k was a solid deal.
A great video! Thank you, Chris! I have a horseshoe driveway and I always wondered how much approx to dig up my 1978 4" driveway. I just fixed a few pot holes with Perma Patch, then I seal coated with Black Jack Drivemax 1000. My driveway looks a lot better. Hopefully, I am good for at least 5 years.
If it's roughly the same size as his driveway, throw a few thousand dollars more and do concrete. It will add value to the property and save LOTS of $$$ in maintenance. Blacktop needs to be resealed about every 1-2 years, which can quickly add up to the cost to just do it in concrete, which should last 25+ years without maintenance.
Being a Paver Operator, with all around experience on different equipment such as the skid steer, rollers, and other equipment, along with a good old rake and shovel, it’s always satisfying seeing a good finished job!
Chris. Forever I have been looking at that poor ole crumbling driveway and wondering if ever it would be fixed. Low and behold you uploaded a video covering that very topic. Beautifully done Chris and thanks for showing us how it is done and the costs involved. Now I'm totally jealous as my cracked-in-many-places driveway that I've been talking to my wife about now needs to be done. The company that did your driveway did a terrific job. It's also a good idea to mention about getting estimates from at least three different paving companies before hiring the right guys to do it.

I'm on a paving crew and lay asphalt every day. I can tell you that you picked a solid outfit to do your driveway. They did a great job
You should see some of the work they do in south Texas by a year or two there back to just gravel driveways

As someone who helped the family paving business from age 11 to 26, I was prepared to judge hard. But these guys did an amazing job! Excellent work and service.
Another tip for anyone interested, is to avoid turning your steering wheel on fresh asphalt when your car is not moving. My dad called them "power steering marks." He'd receive calls all the time saying the asphalt is tearing up. But it was simply due to the steering wheels being turned while the vehicles were stationary. Nothing major to worry about. The marks will iron out over time. But if you're picky about your finish, make it a habit to have the car moving before turning the wheel.

Only time will tell how great the asphalt job was. I paid $8000 for a complete replacement 4" thick asphalt driveway this large in Philly in 2022. You got a very good deal. I will say this, because they reuse asphalt, the new material is grainy and can accumulate weed growth and in some places even flakes off. My contractor admitted this up front. Get the best grade asphalt they have.
The cost was less than I thought. I thought it would’ve been at least $10k. Definitely worth the $6k! And it’ll last at least 20 years. Looks great!

It keeps them in good working order. Plus I didn’t have much growing up so I learned to take care of the things I had, and it carried over to the things I own now.

Like people have stated, it's crazy you can get this precise work for 6,000$ and completed in just 4 hours. This is unheard of in most parts of the world. Usually where I live the same process is never completed this quickly, On average such things take DAYS yep DAYS not hours. These guys did a stellar job and this coming from someone who used to prep ground for asphalting and sometimes involved in asphalting as well.
The right tool for the job is what makes it quick as well as their experience
These guys had the works though compared to other companies, that is for sure. Quite a few staff plus the big machinery to speed up the process. The guys I hired to do my driveway definitely took longer but they also didn't have a giant asphalt rig.
Likely should have let the base dry before laying the Asphalt. I'd have given it at least a warm afternoon to cure before vapor locking the hmac. Also spraying down the fresh lay is not best practice. Other than that the end product looks good and a great price. Would not recommend putting that screed on the base either but hey the owner was ok with it! Great video, impressive commentary

If asphalt is fresh, less than a day fresh, is it safe to let traffic through? It was done in front of my house and I would like to know if letting traffic onto fresh asphalt is going to cause it to warp or degrade faster. There are concrete curbs btw.
@@burneracc2567 yes, most of the time the asphalt is below 100 degrees within 1.5-2 hours and it is safe to put traffic on that day. Just don’t twist and turn your tires on it while it’s still fairly fresh and you’ll be fine!! Sometimes we put highway traffic on the asphalt right after we finish paving to open the road for the day then come back and finish at night. You’ll be fine!

Yet another great, satisfying video! A few more do-it-yourself tips for maintenance:
After a year or two the new asphalt will slightly shrink and may pull away from the driveway door, leaving a large gap. Driveway filler is readily available from the hardware store and you can easily fix that yourself. If weeds take root inside some cracks, the best solution is to use a blowtorch to burn the weeds and kill the roots, then apply a sealer. Aside from causing needless pollution, weed killer just doesn't work well.

I didn't think I was gonna enjoy this at all but it was actually incredibly satisfying. I just got into my first home and I am watching all these kind of maintenance and care videos and I am like this is nice, I'd like that. Woah 4 hours and they did it that nicely :O I thought it was a lot longer process. That is totally worth the money! 5 bucks and a quarter per square foot isn't bad :O it looks amazing!

Almost all contracting companies are required to fix those kinds of mistakes under penalty of being sued or worse. Just a bunch of legal bs but if you’re a cool customer, it usually goes about like it did in the video.
As a Civil Engineer I approve of that company's work, they did a dang good job, I was happy to see them take the time to actually get all the small details instead of just ignoring it like alot of contractors do

If I had to take a guess as an E1 for a state DOT, namely snapping string lines for the edge of the driveway and for the concrete sawcut. Remembering to use water when compacting the quarry processed rock (in my state we call it crushed surfacing top course), taking care to preserve the original subgrade, taking the extra step to use the paver as a grader for the quarry processed rock and even running the plate compactor over the finished asphalt

As a road worker from the Netherlands, it is very interesting to see how people in other countries work. They did a great job and it is definitly a strong construction. But in the Netherlands this would not be accepted due to little details like they did not apply an adhesive layer between the sides of the garage/sidewalk and the asphalt. This layer ensures that the asphalt wont let loose/crack over time. Nevertheless a great video and i hope you will be happy with your new driveway!

Dont quote me on this but im pretty sure with our Harsh winters in certain regions in America the adhesive isnt required... The concrete will crack anyways due to the changes in temperatures..
Netherland avg temps are about 1->24C. New Jersey is like, -5C to 35C. It's gonna crack regardless

This should be avoided by adding porosity into the mixture of concrete. Porosity in concrete avoids cracks caused by water freezing in concrete (freezing water expands and causes the cracks if we are focusing on weather conditions).

I was going to talk about using a plate under jackstands, but he mentioned that! One thing that’s important to be careful with is gas or diesel getting onto pavement, they eat away at asphalt. Enjoyed watching this and really related to how satisfying paving is. I do paving work with my dump truck, I work on a lot of parking lots, streets, and highways. Never seen a driveway done so it was fun to watch and I’m glad to see that they still take all the same precautions on a smaller scale.

edging should have been done better ngl, shouldnt of just used the loot but a tamper to get the edges tighter and more compact to make a nice 45 degree. for roads it doesnt matter but on a driveway it changes how good it looks by a ton

@@Tha-mountain grading and placement were good. Can't be sure of of temp which, if it's too high will result in his paved driveway looking like a gravel driveway lol. I would have used s9.5 instead of an intermediate mix but other than that, looks pretty damn good.
For a guy that works on a lot of cars he didn't make a oil Bay any drainage he should have made it out of concrete... Oil and gas fun fact eats through asphalt because gas can eat through tar I've laid hundreds of thousands of tons of asphalt for the government... And the number one scary thing is that guy cutting that concrete with the saw no mask man the silica that creates from that dust gets in his lungs not smart I know he put water on after I watch the video but at first he dusted all those workers and himself....The whole driveway should have been plate tamped with water for a higher compaction rate he'll have sinkholes.. we used to have to get our roads at 99% compaction rating and they would be tested with this guy he had this yellow box he would set it on the ground had a radiation badge because it uses some type of device to tell the compaction of the dirt... So I think he's missed a lot and I think he really wasted his money put in asphalt .. But these are my opinions take them as you will....

Driveway looks great. You hit on the 2 things I was looking for. Pressure from the jack stands and oil. Both are driveway killers. Glad you have a solution for both.
Damn, I feel bad then. All the money I save working on my own car, probably caused thousands in damage to my driveway that has a ton of cracks on it now probably from oil and transmission fluids. Wish I knew, maybe I would have done a better job of washing that stuff away.
our road that was like 20yrs old and the neighboring road (street) were done like a few months ago before the snow and it was so nice and smooth my bike tires just went along it and stiked to it and best feeling ever. now its not as good but so SMOOTH i love it

hey Chris, the drive looks great, i would suggest using Bitumen tape (dunno if its still called that across the pond) on the edges to the garage and side walk this will prevent any water from freezing and causing chunks to peel away. also it will give a smoother transition for moving your tool box which will eventually chip at the small lip joining the garage

You’d be surprised how much you can knock out in a day. I do asphalt milling for a living, and between us and the paving crew we can knock out a fairly large neighborhood with multiple cudlesacs in a single work day.
That was amazing. When Chris said "and that means the job is finished, it took 4 hours" I legitimately was taken aback. I'm not sure if it's just a southern thing, but the fact he said this job took 4 hours and not 2 days is astounding to me. Here in Georgia due to immense heats and humidity construction and especially roadwork takes days even for small jobs. Road work in New Jersey seems amazing and super quick! Can't believe they did all of this before lunchtime was done WOW!

Thats a pretty sweet rig setup they have at 11:35 ! Pretty much all the equipment you need in one go. $6k for the driveway is also way less than i imagined it would be.

Jesus, that was so much faster and less expensive than I anticipated. It looks great and you deserve that beautiful workspace for all the amazing work you do!
It can get a bit more expensive if you have to do it from scratch and or remove a really bad driveway + root. In this case, tho the OG contractor was a pooch and skimmed it, the base was good, well compacted. Note how little they upset it when they were doing the old asphalt removal. So half the work was already in place.
Also, the right sized crew for the right sized job. I've seen a lot of people screw themselves royally by hiring companies that do far bigger volume work. These guys were clearly set for work in small quantities from the equipment to the size of their crew. This should last him good years.

A great video! Thank you, Chris! I have a horseshoe driveway and I always wondered how much approx to dig up my 1978 4" driveway. I just fixed a few pot holes with Perma Patch, then I seal coated with Black Jack Drivemax 1000. My driveway looks a lot better. Hopefully, I am good for at least 5 years.
I did the same with mine years ago and it lasted a good 5yrs so hopefully same for you.
I just started putting videos out to help with anxiety and homework. Relaxing sights and noises. It helps me a lot. Hope it helps you too

If it's roughly the same size as his driveway, throw a few thousand dollars more and do concrete. It will add value to the property and save LOTS of $$$ in maintenance. Blacktop needs to be resealed about every 1-2 years, which can quickly add up to the cost to just do it in concrete, which should last 25+ years without maintenance.

Being a Paver Operator, with all around experience on different equipment such as the skid steer, rollers, and other equipment, along with a good old rake and shovel, it’s always satisfying seeing a good finished job!
Chris. Forever I have been looking at that poor ole crumbling driveway and wondering if ever it would be fixed. Low and behold you uploaded a video covering that very topic. Beautifully done Chris and thanks for showing us how it is done and the costs involved. Now I'm totally jealous as my cracked-in-many-places driveway that I've been talking to my wife about now needs to be done. The company that did your driveway did a terrific job. It's also a good idea to mention about getting estimates from at least three different paving companies before hiring the right guys to do it.
