2WD Truck vs 4WD Trail - Pilot Rock Trail (Pt. 1)

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE MY TACOMA GOT STUCK! Well actually, given that i'm 2wd on a 4wd trail I can believe it.
Off of the 15 freeway and the 138 highway is a trail known as Pilot Rock. This trail was unknown territory after all of the rain we got this year. It created some ruts and trenches that we had to carefully navigate given that we are not 4wd.

two wheel drive with rear lockers is a lot more capable than some people think!

Honestly most the problems I got into on the trail cold have been solved with just locking the rear haha

Yup, best mod I did for my rwd Dakota was to put a locker in the diff. I've pulled my trailer through ohv parks in AZ on highway tires (aired down) just going slow and letting the tires conform to the ground and do the work.
Also went out to white pocket, nothing but sand, ruts, and about 6 inches of mud, and had no problems. Loved the signs posted everywhere about 4wd being mandatory.

It’s an easy trail up to a certain point depending on when you take the trail! Let me explain, if you take this after a good rain then 4x4 is the way to go but if you give it like 2 months after a storm you can do it I a high clearance 2 wheel drive but either way it’s fun getting out there and pushing the limits that’s what it’s about!!! But yes a win for the 4x4

Think about the old Baja Bugs. They could follow a wrangler 95% of the time. Tires, weight distribution, wheel base and ground clearance with the right driver sitting on brass balls and you can be the leader of the pack.

Great video! Cant wait to see how you guys beat up your bumpers 😆 No Auto LSD in your Tacoma? I have an '09 Tacoma 2wd with a similar suspension setup as yours and my Auto LSD has helped me get through Cleghorn on the other side of the mountain. It also allows my truck to do controlled drifts in the dirt, to an extent. You can also mod the TC harness to make your TC actually go completely off when you press the button 👌

What is squeaking in your suspension? Sounds like you need a good soaking in WD40.
Traction control and/or LSD or a locker on that rear axle would have made a huge difference.

UCAs probably just needed some good ol triflo. And yeah a locker would’ve come in clutch with this. I’m second guessing myself now wondering if I had my LSD turned off or not 👀😂

Not sure how much of a role they play on trails and over-landing since I don’t do it all that much, but I’d assume they don’t matter all that much. Where they really matter is in the desert, high speed stuff.

I put stiffer front coils, and made a bastard pack in the rear on my 03 RWD Dak. That gave me an extra 2“ frame clearance. I'd say for you, go to 16“ (32“?) tires and get a winch and a pulley and shackle set. Simple and cost effective suspension and accessory mods or upgrades since you've already got the locker.
