Early 70's, not only been to Pilot Rock, but on top of the rock. Weather permitting, you can see Catalina Island. I've read, early pioneers and Mormon wagon trains used the Rock as a guide to find the way to San Bernardino.
Thanks for commenting Lynn. Yes, I should have added the history of the Mormon pioneers using the rock for navigation, hence its name. I also stood on top once enjoying the view as you did, looked down, and saw the words "I know" etched in the rock, like someone was saying "yes, I know, it's a great view".
We were up there hunting when I was a kid.. we talked to a man on a boat sitting in the bay at Catalina..

When I was a kid my dad and friend would bear hunt that road... I had some fantastic memories of pilot rock..

I did that route back in the early 1990s, but I went past the exit and continued, which was a mistake.
The road had rocks, which the further I drove, the bigger they got. Unfortunately, i couldn't turn around and had to continue until I reached a clear open area. Then I was able to turn around and go back to the exit. Fortunately, my 1986 4 Runner had high clearance , 36 inch tires, and skid plates. And yet the 4 Runner was still hitting the rocks (they were good sized rocks).

Thank you! You should be fine. Just don't try it when you know it will be muddy or snowy, which probably won't be anytime over the next few weeks.
I’ve done this trail a few times, and have never had to put my truck in 4wd, when staying on the main trail. There are a couple offshoots, which require 4wd. High clearance is a must though, but it isn’t extreme.

I really like the way you record your channel good stuff have you ever been to deep creek I hear that's a tough trail in some places. I look forward to more vids of San Bernardino mountains but all your videos are Great than you for your channel.
Thanks for commenting. Yes, I've hiked, even mtn biked, to Deep Creek hot springs. It's really not a drivable road, but I'm sure you know that. We have several other tours of places in the S.B. Mtns - Holcomb Valley, Cactus Flats, etc. Surf thru our video offerings or check out our blog: www.backroadswest.com/blog. We moved from the Victor Valley to Utah about 5 years ago, so our focus on tours will be more in this area than So Cal now.
How many miles and whats the level of this trail.? I just bought a 4x4 and looking to hit beginner trails
Hmm I took this on a rental Jeep, not sure why but maybe a mile into it I got a sign that said no vehicles. But smaller ATVs were ok

Just road this on my adventure bike yesterday- the problem with this trail is that it’s a two-way road dune buggy’s etc. come around blind spots -it could be quite dangerous. Did you feel the same? It really is a gorgeous trail though
I'm not usually going more than 20, but the vehicles you're talking about sometime go way too fast. No problem, I'm bigger!
Do you know if there is any free camping on this route? Usually there is free camping, boon-docking, in National Forests.
Don't know. I'd recommend contacting the Forestry Service office in San Bernardino or Big Bear.
Did you run the entire trail in trail in 2 wheel drive or did you need 4 wheel drive in some areas? I'm new to this and I want to hit some easy trails with my kids...
Depending on recent weather conditions, the trail changes. 4WD to be save, 2WD is probably fine if road is in good condition (not ruined by weather events).
