DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Tentacruel is like, the perfect example of a tech choice pokemon. No super high stats, no insane ability, no special signature move, just a collection of traits that are in the right place at the right time sometimes.
His special defence is quite nutty tho
@natedawg1114 It's quite good, but I usually wouldn't say "nutty" until the stat in quest is at least base 130.
@@FaceD0wnDagonTrue but for Gen 1-5 it would have been considered “nutty”. It’s just the continuous power creep that makes us think it isn’t that great

Hey you guys should do a mini-series where you go through each generations' meta and give an overall breakdown of what each meta was about and different popular team comps. It would help newer players get a better understanding of each meta at large before talking about specific pokemon's places in the meta. It could be called "Meta Snapshot" or something.
bump bump This would be a great idea
They did that with Gen I (Though the last episode came about 1 year after)
How GOOD was Kangaskhan ACTUALLY? #howgoodwaskangaskhanactually???
garbage until it got a mega
Until it got Mega, pretty bad. Once it got Mega, straight to Uber. Parental Bond+Power Up Punch is pretty broken
No it was pretty good without a mega
For the first 4 gens it wasn't so bad, but after gen V its well rounded stats started to become useless. Its mega saved it though.
Its more on if you could set kangaskhan up it could be pretty good but there were just other pokemon that could do the same but slightly better
I love how Tentacruel is one of the few pokemon that never fell from UU since RBY.
FINALLY.
Now EXEGGUTOR & DUGTRIO are some of the last of the successful gen 1 mons in later gens that hasn't had a video yet.
They definately deserve a video.
CRimZ I agree! Dugtrio and Exeggutor definitely deserve to be the next two along with Jynx! Then the rest of the Gen 1 Pokemon that did okay in other gens should be next like Persian.
Jaiden Carvalho the difference is im listing pokemon that weren't just 1 trick ponies in gen 1. Dugtrio and Exeggutor were important pokemon in multiple gens. Persian and Jynx were good in gen 1, but absolute garbage in gen 2 and onward.
But yes, after eggy and duggy, those are good pokemon too to teach people how insanely different pokemon used to be.
Don't forget Mew, Tangela(Tangrowth) and I guess Kangaskhan.
Other gen 1 mons worth talking about are:
-Magmar(Magmortar)
-Electabuzz (Electivire)
-Ditto
-Ninetales
And maybe:
-Omastar/Kabutops
-Hitmonlee/chan
-Venomoth
-Weezing/Muk
Jynx was also good in other Gens. It was just not nearly as good.
You forgott Persian.
I WILL KEEP POSTING ON EVERY VIDEO, I'M NOT READY FOR THE GEN 4 STARTERS THEY GIVE KELLEN TOO LITTLE WORK

MafiousBJ yeah, imo pretty much the best gen 1 sprite, both in Quality and style. Though I think fearow also looks great.
HOW GOOD WERE DUSKLOPS AND DUSKNOIR ACTUALLY
They're trash unfortunately because of Knock Off, even if I still love them
dusclops***
As my first shiny ever in Ruby(full odds, not that it's hard in Hoenn lol), Tentacruel will always hold a special place in my heart. I've also always found it to be incredibly reliable in maingame, it's a great example of common Pokémon being incredible to use if you give em the chance, without astoundingly broken moves or abilities. I wish Game Freak knew how to offset powercreep so this could be true for competitive as well.
How good was Tangela/Tangrowth actually?
Tangela was always bad.Tangrowth was only really good after it got regenerator. Currently it's one of the most used pokemon in defensive regenerator cores behind Toxipex.
If Tangrowth was only really good after regenerator, then how come Tangrowth is UU (with OU sets as well) in gen IV where it doesn't have access to regenerator?
The bane of my existence. Tangrowth and Ferrothorn drive me absolutely crazy.
Antonio Morales Tangrowth can never die I swear.
smaragdchaos "Really good"= Able to make OU. It was outshined in almost every aspect by other pokemon until it was able to become a godly tank with regenerator and assault vest.
How good was Flygon Actually
good till gen 4 came in and got completely outclassed by garchomp. I think we all know how that video's gonna end up.
Safety Flygon A poor man’s garchomp.
If Flygon ever gets a mega, there's a good chance it will destroy Garchomp since Garchomp's mega is absolute crap, but I doubt they will release more megas at this point
@@smaragdchaoswell well well
This video really needs a remake with some of the more modern developments on the channel. Tentacruel makes a genuine argument for being one of the best UU Pokémon in history, if not THE best.

Amnesia
AT LAST! But how good was Dugtrio ACTUALLY!?
At the time of this writing, Tentacruel is 100% unviable in OU because of the sheer power creep that has dominated the tier and the rampancy of not just Landorus-T, but Zygarde as well, which Tentacruel has no way of handling without trying a set it is 100% outclassed in. In UU, it shares a far more favorable A- in this viability, alongside its rival water types Swampert and Starmie.
Tapu Lele
It's also entirely outclassed by Toxapex.
Yeah Toxapex really put the nail in the coffin for this guy.
Mark Welch Only Zygarde-Complete is
Eventually some pokemon are so good at filling the niche of another, that the question why use X when you can use Y will pop up. Move changes, strategy mixups and hidden abilities help somewhat, but eventually you are just playing a weaker version of a top pick.
Minor note: Tentacruel usually ran Black Sludge over Leftovers after its introduction, because it was better against TrickScarfers (and in formats with an Item clause it let you use Leftovers on another Pokemon).

What though?
I stopped following Pokémon after gen 2 (still my favorite gen) because at that point the bullying you'd recieve for still playing this game was immense. I already had enough of it as it was.
But later in life I got a new friend who had been playing nonstop and knows his stuff and helped me get into it again just in time for X&Y. He asked me what's my favorite pokemon just as I was getting into it again... Honestly I couldn't remember many names anymore... But the first one that came to mind, which I remembered by name and design was Tentacruel. I could still remember the impression the tv show gave me of this raid boss of a mon and to this day Tentacruel is a signature pokémon of mine.
Next to that, in gen 2 I really loved Gligar and always had it on my team in playthroughs. When my friend showed me it finally got an evolution in gen 4 I lost my shit... Not only is the design of Gliscor perfect but the way it plays goes right up my alley. I love the synergetic feel it has with itself. My friend later got me a shiny Gliscor as a present. I lost it and everything else when my Omega Ruby corrupted
You shouldn't be ashamed of liking Pokemon if ppl don't like it fuck them be yourself

How good was Kaputops Actually?
Remember that one episode where a giant Tentacruel destroyed an entire building?
DBZMacky hmmm, so you're into pokemon?
It literally aired, like, once in the States. The whole destroying a city bit and the attack of 9/11 didn't jive well together and it was removed from subsequent airing because of sensitivity to the parallels.
That makes three episodes that got the hammer I'm aware of, but at least it got screen time here, unlike the porygon and safari episodes.
Yeah....I memeba....memba when their weren't so many mehsicans...dat was great....memba?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Yes, it was referenced in this video.
Tentacruel is one of my favrouites, its criminally underrated with a great movepool, bulk, speed and offence its good in game as I've used one in R/S/E then in D/P/P and it was really good.
Ah yes, Tenetacruel... the Zubat of the seas.
While I apprieciate this addition, I must insist...
DO KABUTOPS DAMN YOU.

Kabutops is one of my favourite Pokemon.
Kabutops... the Scyther of the (ancient) seas.
Actually, one of my favorites here, too... still wishing I had been luckier with that shiny I got on White2 while merely breeding for better stats. Mild nature with average stats isn't the best thing that could happen, oh well. At least I got a regular one with the right numbers/nature :|
Kabutops and Scyther are a couple of my favorites alongside Gyarados and Lapras.
I have been asking for Kabutops since the Poliwrath video. I will not die.

How good was lucario actually?
But not next weekend because they'll pick a random one

How GOOD was Exeggutor
There are two reasons to use offensive Tentacruel: Giga Drain and the surprise factor. Giga Drain obliterates Swampert, Quagsire and Gastrodon, and can take around 60% from Rotom-W, Manaphy and Greninja. The first four wall Starmie to hell and back, and the latter two can also easily win 1v1 against the star, but it's the other way around with Tentacruel, and the best part is that since they all are good answers to the stantard defensive sets, the chances of a crucial surprise KO is there.

How good was MISDREAVUS actually?? I finally want to see one of my fovourite pokemon here!
Tentacruel has always been one of those pokemon that made me wonder what their reasoning was for the stat changes pokemon got in the special split. It feels like if Tentacruel had gotten another 20 special attack after the split it would've been a consistently top tier pokemon every generation (granted it was often OU, but rarely truly at the top). It was never even that good in gen1 but lost more stats than most of the really good gen1 pokemon in the split.
How good was the NORMAL type actually?
Ethan X normal is fairly good actually... hyperbeam, quick attack, returm, stomp, hyperfang, etc...
Edit: actually, fighting aside, there's not much agaisnt normal... true it doesn't particularly do wells against anything but Normal is underrated IMO
In each generation, there are several normal 'mons with sweeping potential, and on top of that, chansey and blissey are constants. With a lot of normons having wide type coverage and only one weakness, it's easy to switch in to almost anything and pressure it out.
I do too want a full analysis of it, but it's obvious that Normal is one of the most busted types.
Jason Skywalker
Eh I would not say busted, normal has 1 weakness and immunity but doesn't resist anything making it a good defensive choice but offensively it is kinda of lackluster with most rock and steel tanking normal moves and ghost being completely immune
Normal types can generally be anything, as they are supposed to be the "jack of all trades, and master of none." So it comes down to how you decide to use a normal type pokemon and moves.
Normal-types were fucking amazing in early gens, like for example Tauros, Snorlax, Miltank, Persian and Kangaskhan (regular of course), but has begun to struggle in newer gens. Sure, Chansey is still prevalent in the meta, but it is clear that Normal-types have had a steep dicline.
How good were Piloswine and Mamoswine Actually?
Amnesia wasn't the only Special boosting move in Gen 1 iirc. I think Growth also did that, but was usually limited to Grass-types.
How NOT-SO-GOOD Were Misdreavus and Mismagius ACTUALLY?
Borf the Dog yeah, back in Gen2 Misdreavus was really good. But now, when most Dark moves are Physical, she can't even set up the Perish Song, before she faints.
Fucking fantastic actually... against AI. Chuggaaconroy actually started a "It doesn't affect Misdreavus" counter in his Coll Let's Play, it had ticked up way too high by the end.
duddude321 yeah, I remember, it was fuckin hilarious... One of the few reasons why I still love Misdreavus despite being a bit weak.
