    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

    Hey you guys should do a mini-series where you go through each generations' meta and give an overall breakdown of what each meta was about and different popular team comps. It would help newer players get a better understanding of each meta at large before talking about specific pokemon's places in the meta. It could be called "Meta Snapshot" or something.

I've also always found it to be incredibly reliable in maingame, it's a great example of common Pokémon being incredible to use if you give em the chance, without astoundingly broken moves or abilities. I wish Game Freak knew how to offset powercreep so this could be true for competitive as well.

    At the time of this writing, Tentacruel is 100% unviable in OU because of the sheer power creep that has dominated the tier and the rampancy of not just Landorus-T, but Zygarde as well, which Tentacruel has no way of handling without trying a set it is 100% outclassed in. In UU, it shares a far more favorable A- in this viability, alongside its rival water types Swampert and Starmie.

    I stopped following Pokémon after gen 2 (still my favorite gen) because at that point the bullying you'd recieve for still playing this game was immense. I already had enough of it as it was.
    But later in life I got a new friend who had been playing nonstop and knows his stuff and helped me get into it again just in time for X&Y. He asked me what's my favorite pokemon just as I was getting into it again... Honestly I couldn't remember many names anymore... But the first one that came to mind, which I remembered by name and design was Tentacruel. I could still remember the impression the tv show gave me of this raid boss of a mon and to this day Tentacruel is a signature pokémon of mine.
    Next to that, in gen 2 I really loved Gligar and always had it on my team in playthroughs. When my friend showed me it finally got an evolution in gen 4 I lost my shit... Not only is the design of Gliscor perfect but the way it plays goes right up my alley. I love the synergetic feel it has with itself. My friend later got me a shiny Gliscor as a present. I lost it and everything else when my Omega Ruby corrupted

      It literally aired, like, once in the States. The whole destroying a city bit and the attack of 9/11 didn't jive well together and it was removed from subsequent airing because of sensitivity to the parallels.
      That makes three episodes that got the hammer I'm aware of, but at least it got screen time here, unlike the porygon and safari episodes.

    There are two reasons to use offensive Tentacruel: Giga Drain and the surprise factor. Giga Drain obliterates Swampert, Quagsire and Gastrodon, and can take around 60% from Rotom-W, Manaphy and Greninja. The first four wall Starmie to hell and back, and the latter two can also easily win 1v1 against the star, but it's the other way around with Tentacruel, and the best part is that since they all are good answers to the stantard defensive sets, the chances of a crucial surprise KO is there.

    Tentacruel has always been one of those pokemon that made me wonder what their reasoning was for the stat changes pokemon got in the special split. It feels like if Tentacruel had gotten another 20 special attack after the split it would've been a consistently top tier pokemon every generation (granted it was often OU, but rarely truly at the top). It was never even that good in gen1 but lost more stats than most of the really good gen1 pokemon in the split.

      Ethan X normal is fairly good actually... hyperbeam, quick attack, returm, stomp, hyperfang, etc...
      Edit: actually, fighting aside, there's not much agaisnt normal... true it doesn't particularly do wells against anything but Normal is underrated IMO

    • @imaginaryboy2000
      @imaginaryboy2000 6 лет назад +8

      In each generation, there are several normal 'mons with sweeping potential, and on top of that, chansey and blissey are constants. With a lot of normons having wide type coverage and only one weakness, it's easy to switch in to almost anything and pressure it out.
      I do too want a full analysis of it, but it's obvious that Normal is one of the most busted types.

    • @dj.h8374
      @dj.h8374 6 лет назад +8

      Jason Skywalker
      Eh I would not say busted, normal has 1 weakness and immunity but doesn't resist anything making it a good defensive choice but offensively it is kinda of lackluster with most rock and steel tanking normal moves and ghost being completely immune

    • @alucard2076
      @alucard2076 6 лет назад +8

      Normal types can generally be anything, as they are supposed to be the "jack of all trades, and master of none." So it comes down to how you decide to use a normal type pokemon and moves.

    • @bn7ilceh3i
      @bn7ilceh3i 4 года назад +1

      Normal-types were fucking amazing in early gens, like for example Tauros, Snorlax, Miltank, Persian and Kangaskhan (regular of course), but has begun to struggle in newer gens. Sure, Chansey is still prevalent in the meta, but it is clear that Normal-types have had a steep dicline.
