I caught that stream of Kantonian Articuno being used in gen 9 VGC and this video didn't give enough credit to what a truly evil pokemon that thing was. It wasn't just the evasion boost that made it infuriating. Between the support from Aurora Veil, the new defence boost ice types get from snow, and Articuno's already incredible special defence, combined with roost, meant it survived forever. The true cherry on top was that it used all those extra turns to spam Blizzard, which with its spread move and perfect accuracy in snow, meant it had an alarming tendency to freeze at least one opponent per game. The player who used it said in the interview after his win that this was probably his last VGC event ever and just wanted to use his old favourite pokemon. Truly living up to that infamous Karen quote.
I'll still probably play again at some point, but not the full grind of the circuit, which means I probably won't make Worlds again. Playing almost every weekend can be tough at times. But if that's my final chapter, I'm more than content to end it like that. Articuno still has what you wrote above going for it, but I wonder if it can handle Regulation F. I guess time will tell.
You can use your favorites to win AS LONG AS YOU BUILD YOUR TEAM AROUND A SINGLE POKEMON and not just, build a monotype with no regard, ev training and thinking that Swords Dance is just a fun animation because it deals no damage on something like a regional Event is way harder, but strategies like this actually can take many players off guard and win because, lets be honest you dont really do calcs for EVERY pokemon, you mainly make the important ones, and something like Honchkrow... to live a Icycle Crash From Chieng-Pao and K.O. Hmmm I never really thought about it. Articuno was probably most of our (people who were young during RBY) first legendary. Zapdos and Mewtwo were out of the way. Articuno and Moltres were there in your face.

Even more shocking was that the person Nikhil beat in the finals had a clean 16-0-0 record in the tournament (Aurélien Soula [FR])
Moltres's chance of inflicting a burn in gen 1 is a double-edged sword. While it's good against the likes of Tauros, it's actually incredibly bad against the likes of Chansey, Alakazam and especially Starmie, who can all recover the burn damage, do not care about the attack reduction, and become permanently immune against worse statuses like freeze and sleep. Oh, and attacks that can inflict burn will also thaw out a frozen opponent. Imagine essentially resurrecting a frozen (basically dead) Snorlax or Rhydon.
Nobody would switch Tauros or Lax into Moltres. Burning Chansey is not as bad as you think. You can just spam Fire Spin afterwards and put it to down to Hyper Beam range
Funnily enough, the Articuno stall in Gen 7 UU had its roots in Gen 6 UU. There was a few months where there was a commonly used dual-bird pressure stall of Articuno (roost defog haze freeze dry) and Moltres (roost defog will-o-wisp hurricane) due to how they matched up against all the tier's rock setters--either Moltres or Articuno could 1v1 every rock setter, so you could keep the field clear. It was common to also run a spinner, in addition to both birds having defog. Very interesting style of play, abusing pressure as much as possible. Some variants also brought Suicune, to have triple pressure.

A good bird in the lower tiers where it's fighting Pokemon like Crocalor and Clefairy yes haha. It's a bit funny that FSG these days does genuinely try to uplift Pokemon that have solid places in lower tiers, even putting GREAT in their video titles (though that might just be the "remake video" indicator) and not just dunking on them for not being OU viable. But a little bit of that creeped into this Articuno video with the part about Galarian Articuno being used in Gen 9 OU, until people realized it was "actually still bad" lol. They do followup by saying it was good in NU, but yeah it was a slight pulling the curtains back moment haha. Regular Articuno is still pretty bad even with the buff to Ice types, and Galarian is better but not by too much.
Buff both forms by replacing Freeze with Frostbite from Legends Arceus. Also implement the mechanic that boosts frostbite chance when in snow, and buff the frostbite chance on Freezing Glare to 30%, making it a slightly stronger frostbite variant of Scald (which seems fair for a legendary's signature move). That way both forms gain a lot of defensive utility as well as offensive.
personally I thing the easiest buff you can give is the ability snow warning, especially now that snow increases special defense and gives it 100% blizzards.
My favorite memory of this Pokémon involves this cool rug that some of the main characters in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs have in their house. As it turns out, this rug has some plot relevance to it in that it eventually leads to Articuno’s location in the region being discovered.
My favorite mon...became a part of my team instantly when I found it in seafoam back in pokemon yellow. Really wish it kept some of its power and that ice could be buffed in general
Odd that this came out just after a Scott’s Thoughts video featuring all the birds. Also, anyone notice this is the first video to cover all 9 generations?
Finally one of my favorite legendary pokemon, Articuno I just love his desing i wish it had some better stats And the Galarian form is pretty solid too but the same problem unfortunately Thanks Mr. False Swipe the remake I wanted for this Christmas 🎄🎁😊
Simple fix for Atricuno would be to take some base stats from attack and put them into speed and special attack. Then its somewhat fast somewhat strong and tanky but is balanced out by its bad typing. And give it heat wave too. I dont care if heat wave doesnt make sense for Ice type. It also doesn't make sense pidgey can learn heat wave so just let artiucno have it
Is so unfortunately sad or hilarious (if you're cruel) that ArticUNO is the least viable of the trio Moltres is surprisingly solid and can work on mid thiers and Fire is amazing for offense And Zapdos is a monster on Rain and a VGC staple because has the best typing of them on Electric/Flying
How to buff Articuno: *Snow Warning* Crank it's bulk to even higher levels, boost Blizzard's accuracy and power, and its even thematically appropriate. Instant rocket back into OU.
Articuno's Yellow sprite looks so nice. It made me love the Pokemon immediately. I also had a fun ice team in mono-type ADV. Since this was so long ago, OHKO clause wasn't a thing and Mind Reader/Sheer Cold is a great way to finish off an attempted last Pokemon sweep. It's such a shame gamefreak decided to give it 125 base special defense. 90/100/95 would still be quite reasonable bulk and Ice STAB off 125 sp atk is good in any generation. They could have at least given it Snow Warning instead of the useless Snow Cloak as a hidden ability. With the new snow weather condition, it would be quite the tank.
Its one of the things that I can never work out about the Gen 1 designs... Articuno looks timelessly classic, but its just a blue pigeon. But its the best blue pigeon.
Funny thing is that it's stat distribution is what helped it get usage in VGC 2023, which between that and Jamie's recent placement I imagine prompted this remake. With Snow Cloak, it's natural Sp. Def, and it's Def boost in snow Articuno can take most any attack when it hits and spams blizzard which isn't super powerful but is spread and threatens freezes.
The fact that people called for Articuno to be banned to ubers is hilarious. To think that Articuno could have been banned while Kingambit was running around.
Love the newly-updated Articuno video. 👍🏻 **Game Freak simply has to recognize that they screwed the Ice Type from the game’s inception.** Give Ice Types immunity to Ice, with resistances to Flying, Water, Bug & Dragon. Also, make Fire and Ice neutral to each other & you will see Articuno easily overcome its original poor-defensive stats. If the goal is to make Articuno a wall for many teams, increasing its speed by 15 points would also allow it set up its defensive plays before Rock or Steel threats can surface early in games.
We really just need to buff the ice type's defensive matchups. There are lore justifications for it resisting Dragon, Electric, Flying, Fairy, and Water. Giving it any of those resistances would give ice types more switch in opportunities, giving them more chances to hit the field. Rock weakness would obviously still be an issue, of course, but this should even things out a bit.
from its design all the way down to it's cry, Articuno has been my all time favorite pokemon. may be simple, but articuno always had this beauty and regal-ness that made me love this pokemon. never seen galarian articuno's shiny before, but got to agree with you on it being that fantastic. Just wish that Gamefreak didn't give it the short end of the stick with the transition between gen 1 to 2, and then crushed its hopes and dreams with a bunch of rocks.

I'd buff both Articuno variations with Magic Guard. Articuno is one of my favourite Ice types, but being a legendary, I feel that it's too weak, and both variations have abilities that, while fitting, don't imply mystical or enchanting.
Being a pokemon thats lore says it bringd blizzards. I think to help balance Articuno it should habe a hidden ability smimiar to mega rays, where it removes ice weakness while on the field. To help cover rocks, and fire/rock weakness
I'm not surprised some players saw fit to include Kantonian Articuno on Doubles Snow teams, as the new Snow mechanics would buff it's already impressive Defense and allow it to function as a pesky mixed wall, especially if you got an Aurora Veil up. You could run supporting moves like Icy Wind for speed control, Helping Hand to buff ally damage and some combination of Protect/Roost/Blizzard/Tera Blast in the final move spots.
I still don't get why entry hazards benefit from weakness/resistance. Stealth Rocks would be balanced and so many Pokemon would be relevant if they just did set damage to everything.
@@Loner098 He uses "great" for remakes now look at the typhlosion and feraligatr video for example, they both arent great pokemon but since it was a remake he put great inside the title But sometimes, if a pokemon is truly GREAT he uses that term in their first video, like heatran

Way back in 2000, I actually used Articuno as part of my team in a Pokemon Stadium official tournament. Because I figured out the basics of EVs before seemingly everyone else, mine was trained ridiculously high in HP and speed from killing Route 1 foes to go from 50 to 52. That Articuno got me to the finals match, and it ended up all coming down to my Boreas versus the other guy's Dugtrio. Everyone could tell that if it missed, it was getting destroyed, and if it hit, I might actually live Rock Slide anyway. It crit and I lost, but that wasn't the fault of best bird.
how to buff Articuno ? we could easily hyperoptimize the stats by lowering attack by 80 and adding 40 to both sp. attack and speed, as well as giving it a new ability that sets up Sleet, a new weather that slows down non-water & non-ice types, and makes hurricane & blizzard ignore accuracy checks
I remember being like 10 when the first pokemon games came out and every single kid ran the 3 birds, mew, mewtwo and usually their starter. Merry Christmas to you too those at FSG and to all watching !
Great vid.
Maybe one on Seismitoad? Flygon? Togekiss?
I'd buff both Articuno variations with Magic Guard. Articuno is one of my favourite Ice types, but being a legendary, I feel that it's too weak, and both variations have abilities that, while fitting, don't imply mystical or enchanting.
Articuno carried me thru the end of my firered playthru. Love that bird
Merry Christmas
My favourite way to use Galarian articuno is the iron ball set woth expandong force and trick room in a psyspam team. It's really fun to use
If only stealth rocks weren’t a thing
And it seems this video should've also used the word "GOOD" rather than "GREAT".
I still don't get why entry hazards benefit from weakness/resistance. Stealth Rocks would be balanced and so many Pokemon would be relevant if they just did set damage to everything.
@@Loner098 He uses "great" for remakes now
look at the typhlosion and feraligatr video for example, they both arent great pokemon but since it was a remake he put great inside the title
But sometimes, if a pokemon is truly GREAT he uses that term in their first video, like heatran
@@alimirza4608 I always thought the term "GREAT" was used for Pokemon that are relatively consistent in at least OU and fall victim to ban hammers if they drop one tier later.
@@Loner098 Same, just a few weeks ago after i saw typhlosion being labelled as "great" i was extremely confused.
But then soon i realized that NOW he uses the term great for remakes
But once again in rare occasions he uses the term "Great" for pokemon that are actually consistently good.
The most recent one being aegislash, which wasnt a remake, but since aegislash is an excellent pokemon, he bestowed the title of great upon it
A most joyous christmas day thank you FSG for this gift, how about sylveon for the new year hmmm
27:50 "Articuno has a good match up against Urshifu" *shows it dying to Urshifu*
FSG just casually reuploading how good was stealth rock actually and expecting us not to notice
Misty rn: Friendship ended with STARMIE
Now ARTICUNO is my best friend
Merry Christmas everyone. 🎁🎄
I saw that Shiny Simipour in the Gen 6 segment.
how to buff Articuno ? we could easily hyperoptimize the stats by lowering attack by 80 and adding 40 to both sp. attack and speed, as well as giving it a new ability that sets up Sleet, a new weather that slows down non-water & non-ice types, and makes hurricane & blizzard ignore accuracy checks
imagine when G-Articuno gets Esper Wing? it'll be my new favorite G-bird pokemon
Speaking of which, Braviary is so long overdue.
I remember being like 10 when the first pokemon games came out and every single kid ran the 3 birds, mew, mewtwo and usually their starter.
None of us had any understanding of the mechanics beyond type weakness and no one used buff/debuff skills or switched out. They seemed like wastes of a turn. Those were the days.
Oof, Articuno after Stealth Rock was basically from working in an important business to work in a McDonald's
