@PkMn Trainer Vayne By saying that, you're the same type of comments as "well you see Wolfe 297/2 is 148.5". That's what we learnt, that's why we have always EV in such a way, etc. And now People just drop comments like "the game visually rounds, but actually calculates with decimals" ; without precising in which generation this is a case, what is rounded or not (and how : is it a floating point or a fixed number of decimals), or even more crazy : why Showdown doesn't do that. It's like, one morning we realizes the sky is green. And you're saying "see, the color of sky depends of the gas is in the atmosphere, and because there is X gas in it, it looks green", thinking we should be happy with that explanation. You're not seeing the huge problem : if so, how and when did the gas of atmosphere change ?!?
@PkMn Trainer Vayne All of our experimentation and datamining leads us to believe that Pokemon uses integer rounding in all cases. This is why, for example, you might give your Pokemon 159 HP instead of 160 HP; Sandstorm hurts you for 1/16 HP per turn, but 1/16 of 159 is 9.9375. The game truncates the decimal and you lose 9 HP, leaving you with 15 HP after 16 turns. If there were separate counters for HP display and HP storage (which, I should mention, is not unheard of in RPGs), you would lose 15 HP on the first turn and 16 on the remaining 15 turns. What we have found is that this is not the case-that HP display shares a counter with HP storage-and it is possible to take advantage of integer rounding to manipulate the way in which you receive damage/healing. This is why @LDA - Kennard compares it to waking up and seeing the sky is green. Even if there is a sensible explanation, the existence of the situation is already very anomalous. All the evidence points towards Charizard surviving two hits of Stealth Rocks, so if we're wrong that means there may be bigger problems to worry about. Is this case special? How did we not notice this? Is it unique to Gen 4, to D/P or Pt, does it happen in Battle Revolution? It carries all sorts of mechanical implications and could potentially undermine a lot of what we thought we knew about the game.
Have not seen any comments of this yet, so thought I would explain the Stealth Rock situation at 6:50. I can understand the confusion and the problem is because of HP being shown in whole numbers and not percentages. The first time Charizard came in, the rocks did 148.5 HP but since ya can't see them decimals, it just rounded it up to the higher whole number ( that is how it is usually done in Maths too) being 149. Once it came back in, it did 148.5 HP again and hence, we have a ded fire dragon lizard boi.
The confusion isn't because people don't understand basic math rounding, it's because people know how damage works in this game. In Pokemon games, the final damage calculation uses truncated integer division, it always has. The game isn't supposed to have a hidden 0.5 damage that's not showing. Each time damage is calculated it uses a 4 step damage calculation based on stats, move power, rng, multipliers etc. and the damage done in most cases would be irrational decimals. To compensate, the game always rounds down to the nearest whole integer. So once the damage is done, what you see is supposed to be the damage that is done it doesn't keep hidden decimals or percentages, that's why people are questioning it.
Commenting on Wolfey’s wideo for it to get into RUclips’s circulation algorithm! I love False swipe gaming’s content. It’s very informative while also being entertaining!
Charizard was actually at 148.5 hp but the game rounded it up to show as 149. 148.5 is 50% of 297 so after the -148.5 it took another -148.5 even though it showed 149.

Charizard takes 148.5 damage from stealth rocks, the game registers that even if it doesn't displays it and when it enters again it takes the remaining 148.5 and faints.
It's not that it was inconsistent it does (and always has) done exactly 50% of total hp to a flying fire typing which in this case was 148.5 hp. The game keeps the .5 hp in mind and then uses it to do 148.5 again which in game is 149 since we don't see the decimals
@@Alexcoman51 that is true but I think what the devs did was making two separate life systems that affect each other. While the player sees a non-decimal life bar, the game "sees" the actual calculation on what the move did.
@@nicolala7132 I’m pretty sure all Pokémon calculations are from rounded down integers. The game tosses out anything after the decimal and things like rocks leftovers or sand damage is always the same amount.
@@Alexcoman51 Basically the question is does it REALLY round down. Or does it visually round down which keeping the decimals store in it's memory, like a lot of games did and probably still do. this is super fascinating to compare this to a more modern FalseSwipe video, its fun to see how far the production, research, and delivery has gone in a few short years
The only conclusion I can think of the stealth rock conundrum is that stealth rock is like other moves where it can have a low role doing half the hip and then a high role doing more than half
6:49 Since Charizard has 297 HP, it takes 148.5 HP of damage from Stealth Rock. That decimal value is then approximated to 149, though upon a second switch, the remaining HP will act as if it were a decimal value
7:55 I think the reason the damage rounded up may be because 297/2= 148.5 so the health value rounded up to display 149 but after taking the other stealth rocks it KO’d because the true value of Charizard’s health was only 148.5
The only explanations I can think of for Charizard taking 148 on its first switch and 149 on its next from stealth rocks are: A) the game keeps track of the 1/2 damage it should take non visually B) the game chooses to round up or down at random C) the game rounds differently depending on the color of its life bar. i.e. if the bar is green it rounds down, if its yellow/red it rounds up

Okay, I'll explain. 297 can't be divided evenly by 2, so it splits into a slightly larger part, 149, and a slightly smaller part, 148, and deals the smaller part first.

hope you see this but to answer you question at 7:46 its because in gen 4 the dmg is based on a high or low roll within a certain range of base dmg. lowest being the least obious ect. so moves somtimes would do 1-5 dmg more or less somtimes like what happened
About the rounding up part, don't pay attention to the hit points. It does 50% damage and it'll round up if you have taken 50% already from say belly drum or another switch in to stealth rock. Idk if someone answered it but that was always my take on it.
Since it reduces Charizard’s health by half 297/2 = 148.5. Since decimals aren’t expressed it round to 149. Stealth Rock deals constant damage therefore it will deal another 50% to charizard finishing him off and doing another 148.5
You should totally react to one of Jrose11's wideos. He makes Pokémon challenges (solo runs, minimum battles, stuff like that), mostly in early generations, and he REALLY goes in depth on strategy and optimization in order to get the best possible runs. It's definitely not your average challenge channel. You should check it out, I believe you'll be surprised, as a vgc player, by how much you can accomplish when you test the limits of a game like he does. I especially recommend the minimum battles challenge that he did a while ago, it's long but worth it.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the pre-evolution solo runs he's done, where he attempts to make every one a minimum battles run. He actually made me wanna get back into gen 1 with those.
Please please please watch the Ledian one, its such an in depth analysis on the little niches he had at the lowest of tiers. Its so interesting how dominate he was and would've been if he was in Gen 8.
You can mess around with Charizard's EVs in order to make it take 49% from Stealth Rock instead of 50%, but if you don't account for this in your EVs then Charizard will always take 50% from Stealth Rock.
I kind of want him to react to the Tyranitar video or something weird like Jumpluff who thought would be terrible, but turned out to be surprisingly viable.
7:52 297/2=148.5 Since the hp is not shown in decimals it's rounded off to 149(just to show on screen) I believe The second time it took damage it was still 148.5 because its still 50% of 297.
I would assume that the reason stealth rock took 148 the first turn and 149 the second is because 50% takes it down to 148.5 whereby it cannot be a decimal so the code rounds up to the next whole number. As 149 is a whole number it can just take that as the remaining 50% thereafter
Stealth rocks do 50% damage to Charizard, so the first switch it did 50% of 297 or 148.5 with the health bar rounding up, and then on the second switch in rocks did another 148.5.
Wolfey I wanna see you react to FSG videos on low tier VGC or singles pokemon. Something like a Ttar vid or Togekiss wouldn't be as interesting since you would know most of the info already. Maybe start with something like Clefairy/Clefable (to compare them in each format), Vaporeon (for your mention in that wideo), or a random bad pokemon like Meganium or Aggron or something. It would be interesting to hear your take on why they were/are never good. You could also brainstorm scenarios in which they would be good, like certain formats or buffs they could receive. Of course, I won't stop you from just choosing your favorites either. You do you and we all will enjoy it all the same.
I'm sure someone pointed this out by now but I think that because it had 297 HP, it had to have taken away 148.5 HP even though the HP bar displayed 149 HP. So when it switched in again it took another 50% so it rounded up
Hi Wolfey! Just wanted to say I love your content and think it's super interesting. I had played pokemon since I was a child, but you inspired me to try out VGC for the first time, and you've helped me improve a tremendous amount! Thank you! :)
This is just my assumption. On 7:26, where Charizard is suppose to take only 148 damage from stealth rock is most likely because of “hidden” decimals. While on the screen, it took 148 damage. But in reality, behind that screen, it took 148.5 damage. Because decimals don’t show up on the screen, it makes it look like it only took 148 damage. Hope this might solve your question!

About the rounding up part, don't pay attention to the hit points. It does 50% damage and it'll round up if you have taken 50% already from say belly drum or another switch in to stealth rock. Idk if someone answered it but that was always my take on it.
I would love to see you react to “How Good Was Exeggutor Actually” personally
It's hard to realized False Swipe's vids were way diff
About time! We need a series on reviewing these!
Charizard? Is this a new pokemon? I've never heard of it. Most not be very popular
its almost as irrelevant as pikachu
Yeah I’ve never heard of it either, must be a new Pokémon,I think it would be a really good resist for rocks tho.
It and Greninja Are the most unpopular Pokémon in existence
@@eclipseok1217 stealth rock? never heard of it
The most irrelevant Mon has to be Garchomp.
I would love to see more reactions to false swipe vids
Since it reduces Charizard’s health by half 297/2 = 148.5. Since decimals aren’t expressed it round to 149. Stealth Rock deals constant damage therefore it will deal another 50% to charizard finishing him off and doing another 148.5
I've always hoped for these, especially since you come up a fair bit, being world champ and all
0:45 smooth Wolfe... smooth indeed
A video on Battle of legends comp would be really best to see before it happens!
Wolf looks like the top of his hair is having a fire effect.
Say it with me: "badge boost glitch".
The best crossover in history.
I kind of want him to react to the Tyranitar video or something weird like Jumpluff who thought would be terrible, but turned out to be surprisingly viable.
I’m taking this as confirmation that they’re working on a charizard remake video
7:52
297/2=148.5 Since the hp is not shown in decimals it's rounded off to 149(just to show on screen) I believe
The second time it took damage it was still 148.5 because its still 50% of 297.
Btw this was the first video from their channel and their content’s evolved a lot since
I would assume that the reason stealth rock took 148 the first turn and 149 the second is because 50% takes it down to 148.5 whereby it cannot be a decimal so the code rounds up to the next whole number. As 149 is a whole number it can just take that as the remaining 50% thereafter
Had to stop the wideo just to say I agree so much about gen4 battle visuals. My favourite out of any gen so far!
Stealth rocks do 50% damage to Charizard, so the first switch it did 50% of 297 or 148.5 with the health bar rounding up, and then on the second switch in rocks did another 148.5.
Damn Wolfey really lives in the charred gingerbread house now huh
Man would I love to see more of the reactionary videos, that was sick!!!
Good point
Can't wait for Kellan to remake the Gen 1 Starters.
I like how he just skipped gen 5
Would love another FSG wideo from one of the newer ones
the reason is that there is no half of 297 because it is an odd number and instead of displaying 148 it is rounding up to 149 on visual
GO CHARIZARD, USE CHARIZARD BLAST!!
still waiting for "how good was weakness policy shedinja ACTUALLY"
I'm sure someone pointed this out by now but I think that because it had 297 HP, it had to have taken away 148.5 HP even though the HP bar displayed 149 HP. So when it switched in again it took another 50% so it rounded up
Hi Wolfey! Just wanted to say I love your content and think it's super interesting. I had played pokemon since I was a child, but you inspired me to try out VGC for the first time, and you've helped me improve a tremendous amount! Thank you! :)
Emboar or Riachu would both be fun to see since you have a personal connection to them in competitive.
Quality content about quality content. Well done Wolfey.
I would much rather Wolfe react to the more recent videos since the quality and information has improved immensely since this vid
Hope this might solve your question!
definitely should check out some of the updated ones, or just your favorite pokémon :P
I would love to see Wolfey react to FSG's Exeggutor video especially since they mention his harvest sitrus berry Exeggutor he used back in the day
can you make a tier list about the games of each gen?
I love false swipe gaming, you should definitely react to more. Is personally like to see the Tyranitar episode, it being my favorite Pokémon and one of the strongest mons in both VGC and singles
