DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

2020: How HATED was clefable actually?
annoyeeeng
I hate it so much. I've only ever used an offensive calm mind set and I refuse to use any other set because it's so annoying.
Moonlight + Moonblast = *LITERAL HELL*
Muahahaha
Drama Spontan Well, on simulator.
Man, Clefable is like the opposite of all those gen 1 veterans who have fallen through the tiers with each gen. Started off fairly mediocre, but just kept getting better and better until it finally became the king of OU in gen 8.
Or queen. 75% chance to be female
For sure, Clefable is a huge pain in ass right now.
"it finally became the king of OU"
Landorus-T: Am I a joke to you?
@@zeteq6766 Clef definitely been at the top more often then Lando T in Gen8 (Huge part due to the Natdex cut) but still.
@@Arl-es two words:
WISH + TELEPORT
Hey there everyone. We missed some important information about Gen 4 OU Clefable. We apologize for this oversight.
Clefable in the modern Gen 4 OU meta would be OU in terms of usage, similar to Nidoqueen nowadays. This is because it utilizes moves like thunder wave, knock off, seismic toss, and softboiled while also having the benefit of magic guard to be immune to full paralysis and sand damage. It checks all special attackers in the tier.
Calm mind Clefable is also great against other defensive Pokemon who's main strategy is to wear other Pokemon down with status.
Thank you for reading, thank you to im a blisy ._. for pointing it out and thank you to Pokeaim for the quick run down on Clefable.
:]
Hi
I wonder when are you guys going to include the competitive changes in gen 7 in your videos. It's been almost three years since it came out, I believe that by now things might have mature enough for you to at least include it in your videos.
pokeaimMD yea the boi is here now
False Swipe Gaming I feel like this was incited by my comment but did believe it so you asked Pokeaim.
TENTACRUEL & DUGTRIO are 1 of the only gen 1 pokemon that were very successful in later gens that hasn't had a video yet.
We need a video of them.
CRimZ gogo tenta-squad 🦑🦑
Love how this post has been made on several past videos without mentioning Clefable...
and Golem
I've been requesting a Dugtrio video for a while now :(
Steven Chong - Creative Corner I have, just not in the main post because then it cuts off. Clefable obviously needed one, but others were already voting it so I didn't list it in my comment. Exeggutor also needs a video, infact it's almost blasphemous that eggy hasn't.
"If there's a gap on your team, there's a moderately high chance that it's Clefable-shaped" My favorite description of anything in the recent videos here XD
Certainly worked for me
I guess that’s means it’s Gengar shaped too since they look the same
Fits even better in gen 8 ou
It fits in the square hole
in gen 8 clefable is a square peg that can fit into a round hole
Imagine if this ever gets remade, Clefable will have a 20 minute long gen 8 talk...
What's happening in gen 8?
@@Demian_Garcia in singles OU theres a notorious set called Wish Pass- basically the clef runs Teleport Wish Protect and Moonblast. Tp+ Wish allows healing to be freeely passed around and Wish+ Protect allows it to heal itself. Its super annoying to go against and you pretty much have to run it. (As well as the LO sets being viable too)
Lets not even mention its usage, almost 50% usage on the ladder and around 60% tournament usage, yet they decide to suspect test the fish instead...
@@orshteinbok7762 I love mr fish, but he do be kinda overhyped
@@Demian_Garcia im not exactly mad hes suspect tested, Im mad that Clefable isnt..

Hydreigon: Nopenopenopenopenopenopenopenopenope *goes into Underused*
Lol
all the pseudos except from Metagross
Kommo-o: Oh no!
Metagross: OH YEAH!!!
Diagia doesn't mind lol
All the Pseudo's are screaming in fear and hiding behind metagross. Except Hydreigon. He left the whole scene.
It's kinda funny that gengar has been such a consistent clefable counter. Considering how their designs mirror eachother so much
Gengar is supposed to be the shadow right? I mean that’s what I hear.
teleport cleffable is so meta rn, FSG had to remake this video someday.
@person person Wasn't the whole point behind Teleport to be another method of warp out if you didn't have Escape Ropes or Dig though?
I realize this is competitive, but was it actually less favored in mainstream play too?
How to annoy people with Clefable:
Minimize
Cosmic Power
Moonlight
*_Stored Power_*
Ben Campbell I use metronome instead of Minimize because that set gets completely walked by dark types
Pretty sure this is illegal under the Geneva Convention
Rainbow Fairy i have sigiliph for dark types
Dark types: allow us to introduce ourselves
@@WaltzSunshine Just pp stall it. They won't crit cause they'll just miss. Also play unaware and rest.
it is now gen 8 clefable has now taken over the meta. wish protect teleport moonblast max spDef and HP is so versatile on literally any team to heal up mons. practically any team can use clefable as support bc it can take a hit then wish teleport out, or just heal itself
god help us this thing is everywhere and its so not fun to play against gen 8 sucks goodnight gamers
Yeah. In the hands of an experienced player, Clefable is annoying. You have to predict when she is coming and kill it with a supereffective physical attack, or taunt her.
And you know that’s one of the reasons I like it so much. So versatile. Can fit any team. Its fun to use. It lets me flex my creative muscles
Blunder's discovery of teleport clefable was the decline of the meta until DLC
Oh wow we have the same pfp! I even thought your comment was Mine for a second
and now it runs physical defense due to urshifu
Oh man this is one of those videos that would be muuuchh longer if made today between clef being like 40% usage for half of gen 8, and becoming a legit part of the gen 4 ou meta

The reason the Unown video seemed non-existent is because it was unlisted
Aggron!!
"So it wasn't the Roy to Chansey's Marth anymore"
What a burn lmao
"burn"
Hah, "burn", like Roy's fire-based attacks. Basically, every 90's kid that played Melee had this mindset: Oh wow! This "Roy" guy has a fire-sword! Think I'll switch from Marth to Roy; what could possibly go wrong?
And now this mon is the king of OU

See guys, versatility doesn't solve everything.
That's why Shuckle is the undisputed, best pokemon in the game.
Yeah, you don't fuckle with Shuckle
Noriken, can confirm
And then shuckle turned out to suck on this series
Dudhobo DONT FUCKLE WITH SHUCKLE
@@MrtheFckface which is surprising because if you do contrary shell smash with full hp and split defense the only thing that can really kill you is toxic which rest is for and even crits might not help an insane amount granted a super effective stab strong crit will beat it over but thats 4 requirements for one attacking move to fulfill very unlikely if you run toxic and infestation with that nothing can wall that since only steel and other poison types it wont work on outside of abilites and such and in those cases infestation fills the same job also being a attack so you dont have to worry about status stoppers since it doesnt count as one
How *Underated* was Tentacruel *ACTUALLY* ?
1997Mr Game and Watch gogo tenta-squad 🦑🦑🦑
1997Mr Game and Watch in gen 2 it was an underrated OU threat, but in gen 5 it was one of the most dominant walls in the format. Tentacruel deserves a video.
CRimZ Most definitely. If I made it into the Ampharos video then I'll make it into Tentacruel's as well.
Chuggaaconroy emerald let's play, Acooltent

I thought most gen 1 pokemon were horrible, they barely get any moves.
I've been asking for Clefable regularly. Thanks for this
I realize this video is not about animations but look how lively and fun this Pokémon looked during the Stadium eras.... so sad to see it’s rigid animations now

Well, clefable is cool and all but how good was Tentacruel actually?
They need to remake this and cover how absolutely amazing Clef is in Gens 4 and 8.
It’s hilarious how the mascot is trash while clefable can stand against the meta
Well they kinda messed up with the decision
the anime and game isnt the same about power level (beedril is a powerful fast bug type in the anime)
Funny enough, Clefairy was originally going to be the mascot of Pokemon and Ash's starter, but Pikachu was chosen instead. If Clefairy was the mascot, it would at least be justifiable as Clefable is actually viable in OU, unlike Pikachu and its evolution line.
Hyper well yeah that’s what my post is referencing too
El Joshi De Peluche the show is a mess. He lost to a trainer with his newly picked Pokémon
Cosmic power with unaware was actually really good in low tiers. Covered your defenses more than calm mind thus making it much better
How good was exeggutor actually? i`ll never give up on this damn palm tree!
You mean me?
Top tier in Gen 1 then terrible afterwards.

How good was TENTACRUEL actually!?
It's interesting how Clefable, despite being around for so long has found only recent success. Just goes to show how a little change can make a huge difference! I'm also glad that the tides seem to be shifting for Tentacruel, a Pokémon I've been wanting for a while.
How good was Exeggutor next please. I would love to see it.
How good was suicune? I feel like you say "countered by suicune" in like 90% of gen 1-2 pokemon
*Gen 2-4
Clefable in Gen 8: "UNLIMITED POWER!"
Gen 1 Pokemon are good for this series because they have had a longer history. No one cares about Sylveon or Greninja's competitive history because it would be so short.
FACTS

Yet 80% of Gen 1 Pokémon are garbage compared to the later Gen Kappa
IDM4 ya gen 1 pokes a trash compared to my favorite ceklief
They've done 1 Gen 4 Pokemon analysis and 0 for Gens 5 & 6... not sure what the problem is
How good was Rapidash ACTUALLY? Never giving up!
Gengar was always clefable's worst nightmare, was it? Wow, guess clefable was literally afraid of its own shadow...
Clefable's got a special place with me. It was the only member of my original Red team that was actually good, starter notwithstanding. Mainly due to my being Mister Sentimental, and hanging on to early pokémon and forms which were hard to use late-game.
As for who's next, why not stay in Kanto to talk about everyone's favourite tropical tree monster, exeggutor?
Gengar is a dead human, not Clefable's shadow.
If we're doing a legendary trio, WE NEED THE LEGENDARY WHATEVERS
So anyway, how good was Raikou actually?
i have never understod why that legendary trio is called for dogs. entei is a Lion and Raikou is a tiger/sabertooth tiger and Suicune is looking a little Catlike to.
baldrian22 its the legendary beast and i assume snarl
If you look the database from the Pokémon G/S demo you will see their demo sprites and they look horrible, but actually like dogs.
I've heard some say cat and some say dog, but they're really not similar enough to either. Suicune especially. Beast is the best term, because its ambiguity is more all-encompassing.
baldrian22 Entei and Suicune aren't like felines at all imo
Tentacruel!
I'm really happy that your channel's doing amazing. been following you for a while (since how good was Ice Type)
Congrats and love your stuff

Tentacruel please :3
I had a friend who once made a team of six Clefable, each filling a different role. Mr. False Swipe is not joking when he says that this thing is versatile.
Also, being moved from the second-worst type to the second-best does no end of favors for it.
Exeggutor please and thank you.
How Good was Kangaskhan Acutally?
Gen 1 : Ok but outclassed
Gens 2-5 : Kept going down in tiers rapidly,
Gen 6 : Borderline broken mega
Well, it wasn't just borderline broken - it was actually broken according to Smogon. Mons that are banned to ubers are banned because they are unhealthy for the meta, and that means either simply being too powerful (see: blaziken) or uncompetetive and infuriating to play against (see: shadow tag/arena trap, baton pass). M-Kanga was the former, while also taking zero skill to spam powerup punch and fake out.
To good
